644  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Testers wanted for a micro-jobbing bitcoin site on: October 25, 2014, 07:13:56 PM
I am just wondering how many recruiters will use it. One of my site workforbitcoin.com was built a few years ago. Still there are not many job posters.
645  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BTC Volatility contracts on: October 25, 2014, 07:09:58 PM
Develop some sort of volatility hedge using the BTCVol.info API and use the decentralized ledger of Counterparty to distribute ownership.

Contracts would have have intrinsic value but liquidity for the market would have to come from independent market makers.

btcvol.info's volatility calculation methods is quite basic. You can use R to get a much better calculator: http://www.inside-r.org/packages/cran/TTR/docs/volatility
BTW, to trade volatility, you can also try bitcoin options https://coinut.com

It seems a bit cumbersome to me. I guess I just keep posting.
647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Script for checking the balance of a bunch of addresses on: October 25, 2014, 06:44:18 PM
Is there any python script for checking the balance of a bunch of addresses? I need to audit my site weekly. It's quite cumbersome to use blockchain.info's API to check.
648  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin or Gold? What would you pick? on: October 25, 2014, 06:40:39 PM
I would pick gold. Reason. Everybody knows and accept gold value but not everybody acknowledges bitcoin. Is as simple as that.

Three years ago, I picked 20 oz gold and 100 Bitcoins at the price of $6. I still own all of them.

So I am considering moving a bit of my BTC investments into bitfinex. Part for day trading, part for offering liquidity swaps.

Obviously I'm concerned about a sudden closure (and for the liquidity swaps a rapid fall resulting in losses against my loaned funds); however, I am finding it relatively difficult to evaluate that risk.

Based on their volume and fee structure, do you think its likely that they are generating enough money to not be tempted to cut and run? Are there developers/admins here/in the community that are well respected? How long have they been in business?

They should be making considerable amount of money. But if they are hacked, it's possible that they will run away with the money. Who knows. I still think that they should manually check all withdrawals.
650  Other / Meta / Uncollected activity points on: October 25, 2014, 06:16:03 PM
Seniority in this forum seems quite important. I finally become a Sr. Member. I just want to know how many activity points I have not yet collected and can be collected quickly.
651  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stupidity is the reason on: October 25, 2014, 05:36:39 PM
At least, there is an options exchange now https://coinut.com

Nice that you started an options exchange, I hope it becomes liquid enough for me to trade there eventually. I played a bit with Atlas ATS but it doesn't support margin, will your exchange?

Yeah, it supports margin trading. Right now it has only cash-or-nothing binary options. Vanilla options are very risky because the volatility could change extremely rapidly and thus the seller's lose could be huge. That's also why MPOE failed, so we don't support vanilla options at this moment.

653  Economy / Economics / Re: Risk free interest rate of Bitcoin on: October 25, 2014, 05:16:59 PM
It is interesting that U.S. treasury bonds are considered "risk-free" when real interest rates are negative. Anyway, I don't believe that there exists debt denominated in Bitcoin that has negligible risk, so the risk-free rate must be 0.

So the the positive rate in Bitfinex is totally due to the risk?
654  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stupidity is the reason on: October 25, 2014, 04:43:32 PM
The "greater fool" works both ways, up and down. It helps with the price discovery, but induces large distortions.

Maybe we have just run out of greater fools?

No, in an efficient market the price would have slowly risen to about 100$ by now. Bitcoin price is bubble after bubble, no chance to change that.

Speculating on the direction seems quite difficult now. Trade volatility instead.

Why trust me? Don't!!! This is about reducing risk maybe you should ask your regular escrow provider to offer multisig escrow it's safer...

MultiSig MicroTrust Escrow/Arbitration

EDIT: I wish I could take credit for this but all I did was host it. OutCast3k wrote the source. I have reached out to him to let him know what I did but have heard nothing. Full Credit goes to him.

When the transaction ends well and the buyer is satisfied, the buyer and the seller can sign a transaction together that releases the payment from the multisig address to the seller.
In case of a dispute, both parties can contact the 3rd party, explain their side of the story and ask him to approve a transaction that releases the payment in the manner they find fair.
The 3rd party can only approve a transaction that is signed by either the buyer or the seller, and cannot control the funds otherwise.

This is all done with the bitcoin-QT client as well.

404 error
659  Economy / Economics / Re: Risk free interest rate of Bitcoin on: October 25, 2014, 02:07:05 PM
Bitfinex has an interest rate of Bitcoin, but that's obviously not risk free. The true risk free interest rate should be lower than that. Anybody knows better sources?

Interest rate is an extremely important economic metric. It is also useful if you want to trade Bitcoin volatility using Bitcoin options.
