641  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Charlie Shrem is scammer, watch out on: December 19, 2014, 10:47:13 PM
He just got sentenced to 2 years in prison..

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-12-19/ex-bitcoin-foundation-s-shrem-gets-2-year-term-in-silk-road-case

I assume that is why he has been sort of distracted...might make that repayment date a tad longer  Undecided

Well attending a court case and getting some time in jail will certainly keep you distracted from checking the forum for IOUs you have.

644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcion holiday gift ideas on: December 15, 2014, 09:00:48 AM

Shirts, Phyiscal coins , Stickers, Pins and old USB miners
These type of things pretty much sums it up as to what bitcoin related items you really can give others.

I would also disagree that a sliver wallet is a physical bitcoin as it does not come preloaded with any inputs (you need to generate your own private key and print out a QR code)

Fair enough, its not a Causcius since it didn't come with a preloaded value so your right, anyways if the OP meant bitcoin items only pretty much wrote the whole list there unless I'm missing something ah thought of one custom wood products from the Woodcollector with a Bitcoin symbol on it.

But other than possible handmade goods think it makes more sense to mention things you can purchase with Bitcoin to give to others than just Bitcoin items.

(Until someone creates a marketplace with Bitcoin styled swag)
645  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin mentioned in Horrible Bosses 2 movie on: December 15, 2014, 08:52:26 AM

646  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WHAT IS YOUR OTHER CHOICE FOR INVESTMENT AFTER BITCOINS? on: December 15, 2014, 08:49:08 AM
what is your other choice for investment for a virtual currency after bitcoins?which virtual currency could gain value in the coming months?dogecoins?ethercoins?litecoins?

Maidsafecoins for on chain aka related to Bitcoin stuff
Clams for off chains but because of the way they are distributed they have potential

I like doge lite etc as well but the above two are my picks
647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcion holiday gift ideas on: December 15, 2014, 08:32:12 AM

A silver wallet would probably be the only thing (apart from a physical bitcoin) that is actually bitcoin related.

While I would encourage people to use their bitcoin at merchants that accept bitcoin, doing so would not really educate the gift receiver the benefits about bitcoin

What would you have in mind Willisius
A silver wallet is a physical bitcoin but the only other things I can think of would be a Bitcoin T-shirt or a Trezor

Bitcoin stickers and pins seem more like novelty items.
Other than that an old usb mining stick tops the list of Bitcoin items per se, but items you can purchase with Bitcoin to give to others seems like a convo starter.

(cannot think of many directly related bitcoin items)
648  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How would world politics change if everyone on earth became immortal? on: December 15, 2014, 08:23:29 AM
Quote from: oprahwindfury

Thanks for your input. I enjoyed the read. Let's say for the sake of discussion that everyone becomes biologically immortal. No one dies of old age anymore. (Technically nobody dies of old age at the moment, but from other factors like disease taking advantage of a weakened immune system)

Thanks for the clarification, true immortality is a greater unknown that biological immortality, since people can still die one way or the other. (Eventually everyone would die from an accident since time is infinite)

In the case of Biological immortality we may be able to develop technology similar to a nerve gear (Can't think of a reference for it directly sort of like Occultus rift meets sword art online) Where we would not need to have our phyiscal bodies do much just connect it to a system and carry on from there when you want to disconnect from reality.

Of course that's only temporary shift which might last for a long time (by mortal terms), while humanity figures out how to make Faster than light travel to colonize galaxies, immersed virtual reality would also work as a passtime instead of cryogenetics to kill some transit time, they can hang out in VR with other people in real time while heading to their new destination in the physical world.

In terms of politics assuming that we have Li-Fi (current fastest communication network) and use it to turn our technology into the Internet of things where everyone can communicate directly and jump into the network instantly, one outcome would be a decentralized governmental system, assuming we have enough automated processes going a theoreticial outcome is that due to society having a sufficient processing of resources Politics itself is not a needed instiution in its present form because everyone can get things done through mechatronics.

(In a short run scale, this is just everyone participating in society using the internet and virtual conferences in immersed reality)

In that outcome humanity would have a lot of free time to create and innovate and live a life of Philosophy and Science as the ancients like Socrates/Plato and others liked to proclaim.

It would be a field for a lot of innovative ideas, humans as a whole would not be very innovative at all times, but the accumulation of knowledge and information may lead to greater inventions.

Related Side questions

New births and human reproduction would probally involve cloning, or are ovaries preserved and then utilized over time (aka no more periods).

The extension into areas such as entertainment would be interesting as well as how money in the sense works, if its developed to the point where most things can be created with a replicator (Star Trek) then credits would be used rarely. (Pure energy) converted into matter is convinient enough that money would rarely be needed for anything.

By then we would be nearing a Tier 4 to Tier 5 civilization so that's a bit far out. Might need to define a timeline in the OP as to how far out into the future you were thinking.

Too far in the future and we get into a whole new set of fun

Headline:
Humanity discovers Alien races on other planets and were entering into a Holy War with them  Grin
Subheading
Politics is needed again we had a good run

As far as I can see it, where we are now in human evolution is envisioning the futures we cannot create yet at this point in time but in essence developing a framework of goals we can achieve in time for future generations.
(Hence Sci Fi etc get created)

If we become immortal and can make that science fiction a reality ourselves given enough time then things get much more interesting.

Also my Apologies if that one got a bit technical feel free to ask if you want additional referencing points.

In the midst of the holiday season, trying to find the right gifts for the right people, I started thinking about my interest in Bitcoin and how I can share that with others in my family.

What Bitcoin-related gifts are you all buying your friends and family?

Let this be the single thread for sharing BTC gifts and ideas.

Happy holidays!

You could try some honey from the Bees Brothers
Get something off newegg
Or purchase a silver wallet (Silver Bitcoin)

Of those three probally doing the honey and the Silver bitcoin, newegg stuff is cool though.
650  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Education Programming 101: Destroy Logic on: December 15, 2014, 07:50:59 AM
This is exactly what Common Core is. It is designed to confuse children's ability for critical thought and logic by teaching them nonsense is ok "as long as you can explain it". This is extremely apparent in the common core math program. It is bringing children to tears all over this country trying to make sense of something that CAN NOT MAKE SENSE. This is just conditioning our children to regurgitate what they are told without a thought EVEN MORE than they already do. This is about the destruction of individual logic and will to transform it into a form of nonsensical groupthink. I am terrified for this country's future generations, they don't have a chance.

I'm not a fan of the common core myself the argument for it is that it helps them become computer programmers which makes me go ... well I didn't need it and my tech level is high lol.

Besides i'm a personal fan of the little orange building blocks to learn math because when I'm in the store and I want to divide costs by gram i'm not going to go  1 + 2 is 5 etc when solving the problem.

Anyways I'm with the article that more critical thinking and applications need to be put into the cirruculum question is what to take out or upgrade in its place.

That and Finance ... to many people don't know how to budget / invest lol.
651  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How would world politics change if everyone on earth became immortal? on: December 15, 2014, 07:41:17 AM
That is an interesting question but total immortality or biologicial immortalty.
The biggest crime would not be murder but confinement because their immortal.

I'm sure that science would progress at exponential rates since people would not die off, so we would send off all the crazys to colonize the solar system (just like Australia and its criminals)

Politicans would be immortal so not sure how the heck that would work old blood or new blood  George Bush in the same room as a Barack Obama, might get some interesting discussion if we had a 100 presidents a ways into the future all discussing politics.

And no politican assinations so my answer is Crazy things would happen, the monarchy if it was 200 years ago may be strong still and we would have wars but it couldn't be conclusive.
Infinite ISIS soldiers spawing vs immortal soldiers from the US in Iraq.

(Think I just thought up a hollywood movie lol)

(Ross shouldn't be able to arrange assinations through his cell without an internet connection)
(And theres always the chance he gets another FBI agent lol)
653  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 2 to Dec 15 diff thread. ( +0.15%) to (+0.92%) on: December 15, 2014, 07:26:43 AM
Well, at 1.8 days to go, the estimate is -0.95%. Mining activity has stopped growing for now.

Difficulty, last 9 months.

Well even if it does stop growing for a while
IT was A DAMN good run the difficulty is so much higher than it was a year ago when USB sticks were all the rage lol.

]If you are paying interest and it will likely take a long time sell the two coins why don't you just send one of the 25 BTC coins back to braek to cover the majority of the rest of the debt?

It won't take a long time. I've already sent most of the physicals for grading or sold them. I can send them back to him, but by that time the debt will likely be paid.

The interest works in everyones favor. I am incentivized to pay him faster, and I've started the interest from 6 weeks ago to be fair.

Thanks

Charlie

Approaching a month since this statement was posted
Hope that the OP gets their coins back or the interest on the principal
655  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: New York State Continues Its Path To Regulating Virtual Currency on: December 14, 2014, 11:16:06 PM
New York is trying to protect consumers and prevent illegal activity by regulating cryptocurrency.

http://www.ibtimes.com/bitcoin-new-york-state-continues-its-path-regulating-virtual-currency-1721103

An example of over regulation and oversight in an emerging industry

The current proposal includes a stipulation that people must be able to identify the exact source of any funds they receive. Anonymous transfers would then need to be rejected by the recipient, according to the suggested rules.

“Which is kind of fascinating, because the way bitcoin works, you can’t stop someone from sending funds to you,” said David Ripley, chief executive of Glidera, a bitcoin marketplace and digital wallet service. “And you can’t always identify them.”

Made by people who just didn't get it...
656  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] BitTourist - The open source tourist platfom on: December 14, 2014, 11:12:01 PM
So if I read this correctly the idea is to have a virtual tour guide inside an apartment that recommends local area products and services when a person books a hotel.

Sort of interesting, but the internet is there this only provides a bit of convinience of putting it all in one place.

658  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOW are bitcoins stored? on: December 13, 2014, 11:48:52 PM
Excuse me, Iīm new to bitcoin. I have tried to read many explanations for beginners for the last days, but there are some basic things that I still canīt understand, although I consider them essential to know before I buy my first BTC.

I read all the time about storing BTC in wallets (software, hardware and paper wallets) and I canīt understand what is meant by that. First of all, how can a virtual "thing" be stored? I can see how physical coins, gold, etc. could be stored in a box or safe, but how can a virtual coin be stored in a software, hardware, and even... a piece of paper? I still canīt grasp the logic of it. For example, if itīs just a computer file, then why canīt it be copy-pasted and turned into many files?

The reason for my question is specifically that Iīve read about many cases of stolen bitcoins, and I want to understand what makes it possible or impossible for a bitcoin to be stolen? How Can I buy a BTC and transfer it directly to a piece of paper (supposing I understand how thatīs done) with zero chance of it being stolen?

Thank you very much for the help.

Bitcoins are stored in a ledger, people run nodes which record these transactions.
In simple words

Think of it as a book some people keep copies of these books on their computers.
Whenever someone adds a page to the book they all recieve it at the same time and add it to their copies.

Since everyone has the same book and is in agreement on the number of pages and of what is written in the book their is a consensus.
Bitcoins are stored as a history of transactions over time.
659  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will the difficulty go down again ? on: December 13, 2014, 11:41:30 PM
According to https://alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator...

Next difficulty retarget occurs at block 334655.0 (eta 3.2 days): 39547782382.4 / -1.1% [est.]

What is your opinion ?

I think it will go down a second time, originally I was expecting a marginal increase but it looks like more units are powering down
So at least for now the hashrate will drop
(That said I'm curious if its at a peak bubble and will collapse a bit more soon)

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/financier-falls-death-long-divorce-110125442.html

Somehow ANOTHER high level banker died, again from a high fall off a building.  How are these being labeled not suspicious??!!??

The article claimed he was hiding huge assets in one of Britain's most lengthy and public divorce cases, so I'm guessing its either he was deadbeat broke and just living a rich life on debts and natural suicde or the wife ordered his death.

Well he's dead now one way or the other the truth of his finances will be revealed.
