641  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why is bitcoin going for more than $20 on eBay? on: October 14, 2012, 11:29:42 PM
Can someone explain the risk of selling BTC on ebay? How is disputing a transaction on ebay different for bitcoins than for other items?
Also, it seems to me that if you send something in the mail (one of those print-your-own notes or a casascius coin, even) so that you can verify receipt, it should be fine.
It's always a risk that someone will abuse the system and chargeback even after receiving a physical item.
If a chargeback happens, paypal freezes the funds until the issue is worked out.
Main reason for chargebacks... stolen account. Also the easiest thing to spot/avoid.

Thanks for that explanation. I'm interest in knowing why bitcoin is more susceptible to this abuse, especially if there is a physical item involved. How would this differ from other items? Is it because ebay or paypal can require a seller to accept a return?

To be frank, bitcoin on eBay is often drug money.
Drugs make honest people do bad things and are a magnet for dishonest people.

Did something change with the pool around 8am EST? BFGMiner suddenly stopped working and I have had to switch to cgminer. I get no error, it just causes the app to lock up and become unkillable. It is listed as defunct in the ps listing after trying to kill or press ctrl+c.

Bit-Pay's in Orlando, probably too far.

Reached out to BitPay today. Congrats to them, they have grown too busy for in-person cash sales of bit coins. This is great news for them.

So.. I'm still looking for someone to sell me coins on a regular basis for cash.

Willing to travel 50 miles.
648  Economy / Currency exchange / [WTB] Cash for bitcoins - Daytona Beach, FL - Ongoing relationship sought. on: October 12, 2012, 12:53:28 AM
One way or another, mining is coming to an end for me very soon.
I want to keep selling coins though. I have a small customer base that I resell coins to.

I seek an ongoing relationship with a person who still plans to be mining come reward halving and who lives in the daytona beach area that I can buy coins for cash from. I will pay the days avg sell price listed on MtGox. We can meet at your house, or mine, or the dunkin donuts down the road.

Looking to buy in quantities of $100-$300. Currently seeking $250 worth.

Please PM me if you are a local.

649  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Thai Baht (฿) has always been the most frequently used Bitcoin symbol right? on: October 11, 2012, 08:01:55 PM

With no offece to Thais, who cares about Thailand? That country is so insignificant in global scale, that I don't think adopting their currency symbol would cause any harm or confusion,

I care about Thais, they have good hookers and food. It would cause me considerable harm and confusion when paying for said food and hookers.

While I realize the following statement is a troll... and perhaps your comment was also a troll.... Allow me to change a couple words...

Lets use the cross † as the bitcoin symbol. Who cares about christians? That religion is so insignificant on a global scale that I don't think adopting their symbol of faith would cause any harm or confusion.

650  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why is bitcoin going for more than $20 on eBay? on: October 11, 2012, 12:50:45 PM
Someone new to the bitcoin community doesn't know about bit instant but obviously they know about ebay.  That's the majority of the problem there.

Someone who stumbles upon bitcoin will do the following.

www.google.com
(bitcoin)

And this is what pops up

Bitcoin - P2P digital currency
Bitcoin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mt.Gox - Bitcoin Exchange
https://mtgox.com/
Exchange which allows users to trade US Dollars for Bitcoins and vice versa.
I doubt they cant figure it out.

No... I don't believe it goes like that at all.

People buy bitcoins for $20 on eBay cause they want them now and they don't want to give their bank account information to MtGox for 1 goddamn bitcoin so they can buy stuff they want. (WTF does MtGox even mean).

I sell $20 coins on eBay too all day every day. Scammers abound though. The price is $20 because checking out buyers is a hassle. Thats the tax you pay for me having to email you and call you and weed out the scumbags.

If you meet me in person at the dunkin donuts, i'll sell you coins for $15.

If you want the going rate, you gotta go through an exchange and wait and wait and wait for transfers from your bank to theirs and you probably didn't want to use your real bank so you had to go open a new bank and they want a minimum balance and OH FUCK IT, i'll spend $20 on eBay. DONE.

651  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: October 11, 2012, 11:28:53 AM
You guys are still calculating math on current time prices. You're not adding to the table if there are 10x more coins for sale the price will drop, today you can get 11k for 1k bitcoins, after this launches, you might get 2k for 1k bitcoins.

If thats what actually happens I'll be buying up those cheap coins like a madman.

653  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you want to know why I hate the dev team and how they treat Bitcoin... on: October 10, 2012, 07:37:21 PM
I do believe that paper wallets are a viable solution that is totally underrepresented in the materials one's likely to find in a cursory web search for bitcoin.

Interesting. I'd say start an initiative to get something like this going.

Did he really just say this to Casascius? Wink

654  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: October 10, 2012, 06:38:46 PM
I know for a fact they were contacted by the Dept of Justice, they are going to have to start giving up info soon.

Please provide references to back this up. This is bigger accusation than any forum member's post.

655  Economy / Speculation / Re: If Butterfly Labs never delivers Bitcoin ASIC how this will afect Bitcoin price? on: October 10, 2012, 05:18:49 PM
I'm morally torn between being nice because I want the friends who I have met while mining to not get ripped off.. and wanting to be right about seeing too many red flags and not participating with ASIC pre-orders.

When I upgraded my 1 GPU dedicated miner 2 a 3 GPU miner 7 months ago, I didn't (pre)order FPGA for the same reasons.

When GPU mining ends, I may have to step away from the bit coin hobby.. And thats OK. I'll leave well fed as sales of Bitcoin has paid for my lunch for a year and some handful of months now. I will be able to sell my GPUs online even if there is a glut of GPUs online. It's estimated that bit coin mining is 1% of AMDs business and I have 3 very high end AMD cards. so I've got nothing to lose really, those cards come with a 3 year warranty and if ASIC does hit the scene, there will be more than 2 years left on that warranty... plus the boxes, and all accompanying hardware software.

What is wrong with Intersango? I used it several times without any problems.
Only thing I know about is some banks in some countrys won't process payments to and from them for whatever strange reason.

Intersago announced that it will be stopping BTC/USD trading on 10/14/2012.

657  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Selling Bitcoin on Amazon on: October 10, 2012, 12:03:57 PM
I am happy to report that I got my BTC.  The transaction went as follows:

Holy crap, he's doing digital delivery? I missed that part.

Yeah, you shouldn't do that.

There are some beautiful paper coin designs you can print yourself. And you can buy copper coin blanks and sell those too. Physical goods are the best way to limit the scams.

658  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Selling Bitcoins on eBay analysis on: October 10, 2012, 11:53:30 AM
I made a ton selling coins on eBay, and got the money for them as well.

What I did was say "NO REFUNDS WHATSOEVER" in the description and in the Paypal info, and said the user needed to put their wallet address in the paypal comments.  I also stated that there would be no refunds in any case, and there will be video proof of the transaction taking place, to prove the coins were sent to the address in the paypal checkout.  I sold like thousands of dollars worth of coins, listed at $20-25+ each (back in july 2011) and scammers would buy them up like $500 at a time.

The scammers would do a reversal on the transaction in a systematic fashion, and since I used Freez Screen Video Capture to make videos of myself transferring the coins to the person's wallet that they entered in the paypal reciept (which was open and evident in the video), it served as solid proof.  Paypal returned 100% of the money to me, with the exception of one small transaction where the person did a reversal on their credit card.. Paypal couldn't help that.

When you do a transaction dispute, and they look at the video, there is no denying it.

I paid for ALL my mining equipment with the coins that I sold to would-be scammers on eBay last summer! Smiley

eBay has since changed its policies quite a bit, I don't think it's safe to sell coins there anymore unless they were casascius, a "bitcoin cheque", or a private key on a piece of paper that you can physically mail to them and get a tracking number, since that is allowed.

I'm sure you believe this and perhaps you've had really good luck but I think it's important to people who are new to selling coins on eBay to know that this entire post is utter bullshit.

Unless you have a tracking number from the shipping forms used on PayPal you're fucked. And then you still might be fucked. I've been selling on eBay for well over a year now. My mistakes and the mistakes made by others have shown me that you need to ship a physical product, you need to use the paypal shipping interface, and you need to be very very very very wary...

If you come to a ebay/paypal dispute with a screenshot or a video, they're going to laugh at you.

Ship paper coins, or metal coins. You'll still get scammed but less often.

Interesting.  How long did you do this test?

M

About an hour in each configuration.

I don't think an hour is a fair test.  Maybe a week would shake out the inherent sine curve that tends to haunt mining.

M

OOf... I keep expecting next week to be the end of gpu mining :/ I'm running on borrowed time  and every day brings less BTC Smiley
I think I'm just going to leave it where it is and just forget about it.
