Don't mine on a laptop.  They weren't designed for the thermal stress of 24/7 operation.  They aren't servers and they aren't rigs.

Even with open frames, lots of airflow, and high rpm fans full desktop cards take a pounding of 24/7 mining operation.   You WILL kill your laptop guaranteed.  It is only a matter of time and given the cost of a top of the line Alienware laptop the coins you make before you kill it probably won't even cover the shipping for a repair.

+1 hes right
+2. Don't do it. Even desktop cards burn out regularly fairly quickly after 24/7 mining (burnt a couple after 4 months).
6422  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: just got my 6990 cards ^__^ on: March 09, 2012, 04:41:21 AM

Admin confirmed DI's IP address originates from the UK. No response to email to personal address. Sending to work address tonight. Tomorrow, phone call, possibly letter.
That's a relief to hear as we can be more assured that he is probably not using any proxies; hence he might be the same person under the username quite possibly.
What's his email provider? Is it one of those free email providers?
6424  Economy / Services / Re: not another fpga mining contract on glbse on: March 08, 2012, 02:48:06 PM
Your electricity rates wouldn't much do you good as compared to someone who has lower rates and uses gpus to mine.

Sorry but I'm not seeing this.

8320gh/s for both as a comparison

10 BitForce single  @ 800W  with $0.3 kwh
Power cost per 24h: 5.76 USD
Revenue per day: 26.55 USD
... less power costs: 20.79 USD
System efficiency: 10.00 MH/s/W

33,28 6850 (each 250mh/s) @ 6656W with $0.1 kwh
Power cost per 24h: 15.97 USD
Revenue per day: 27.62 USD
... less power costs: 11.64 USD
System efficiency: 1.25 MH/s/W

Feel free to calculate this for other cards too.

calculated with: http://bitcoinx.com/profit/index.php

As what D&T said, it's possible to have higher efficiencies with 5xxx series cards, particularly the 58xx and 5970 series. And the hardware would have a longer life expectancy  when running more efficently. If it fails though (just happened to me recently with a 5870 and a 5850 dead), you could RMA em and have them back in 2-3 weeks. And there's the inherent problem of one of those bitforces suddenly dying as there's no mention of warranty (I could be wrong, so correct me).

Where's your country? I find it astonishing to have power rates at $0.30 per kWh as your rates are beating even industrial power rates in my country. For domestic use, my power rates go like $0.06 - 0.12 and its already quite high as compared to other countries.
6425  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Astana used stolen cedit cards? Maged can you back this up? on: March 08, 2012, 01:52:59 PM
Yay. Now I for one know you're really a clown. Fancy talking about sueing over the interwebzz LOL. Now we have Atlas no. 2, albeit one with something even more wrong in the head. and "40 lawyers" too ftw!  Grin
6426  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Astana used stolen cedit cards? Maged can you back this up? on: March 08, 2012, 05:29:46 AM
Great! That matches what I have. In that case, I retract my statement about you using a stolen credit card.

Oh good you saved yourself for the moment i'll decide on you later. But not so fast. Those who snitched on me, who are hacking me i.e you absolute fucking  cowards & dogs are not forgiven. louscalet, gigavps, jackrabbit, & psy I want you to write full apoligies in a thread. Or I pull the trigger. 40 lawyers just licked their lips. Don't worry it's not about money, I could give two shits about money now. But what happened was dirty and downright disgusting.
I think this is that attitude that made people 'snitched on you'. Seriously, if you tried to sue based on what they said about you, you'll get counter-claimed till no end as you have made even more derogatory comments with them.
6427  Economy / Lending / Re: DoubleIcaras/Alexander Adams Collections Thread on: March 07, 2012, 07:30:27 PM
Well, just as I've thought so... I've did some google-scraping of my own, and if he uses the same username then we should get him fairly easily. However, there is a chance that someone could impersonate him by taking a well-known username and scamming here, thus leaving all leads closed. He has the signs of a scammer when he borrowed and repaid a small amount, and immediately borrowed a large sum of money after that. Also, the persons that he said would be helping him during the London event are present on the internet too. (Ahles - Photographer) No leads on the Alexis gal as alexis's are fairly common. Can you ask the mods to verify that his IP originates from UK at least?
6428  Economy / Lending / Re: DoubleIcaras/Alexander Adams Collections Thread on: March 07, 2012, 07:21:35 PM
Kluge, are you sure the person you're contacting is his dad? If he were wanting to scam from day one, wouldn't he try hide such information? Note that I'm fully in support of going after those goddamn scammers like DI  Smiley

Seriously, just http://lmgtfy.com/?q=setting+up+p2pool&l=1 would do.

p.s.:that's seriously twice in a row
6431  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Make money out of bitcoins on: March 07, 2012, 07:06:16 PM
Seriously, if you're not with the know-how of setting up a pool, just go with what deathandtaxes said on the other post - run p2pool and set a fee to your own instance, and get your people to mine on it.

Setting a pool up would involve you having a VPS or dedicated server running bitcoind. That's a lot of effing work, especially when it's not documented well and most pools use their own customized version of it.
6432  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 1st bitcoin transaction=scammed-- fire sale on: March 07, 2012, 07:01:20 PM
Since you're, in your own words, "not very smart about this type of crap," you could paste your address here to have its balance independently verified.

Are you mocking me, or making a serious request?
I think he means it. Post your address here and we could take a look exactly what happened. Include any information you have on that person or entity so we can see if what can be done.
6433  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Make money out of bitcoins on: March 07, 2012, 06:55:39 PM
To get to the stage where you have a "large" pool, you'll have to be really knowledgeable in bitcoind and the stuff. And you must have to get people mine on your pool to make it "large". That's the hard part  Wink. Go take a look at the mining pools subforums and see for yourself.

not really something, and is it safe? but can't i make more money by setting up my own mining pool?
As for this, unless you have extremely high hashing speeds in your pool (50 Gh++), you'll be better off mining at one of those 0% fee pools. You'll take an eternity to find a block below those speeds.
6434  Economy / Gambling / Re: New in Dragon's Tale: Cow Tipping on: March 07, 2012, 02:04:54 PM

With higher bets, there's a greater chance of performing more exotic techniques including pile drivers, complex flips and backward falls.

That is the funniest thing I have read in ages.  Cheesy
LOL +1!
Imagine paying for exotic techniques involving a cow. Holy mama!

Atlas I can assure you that your mind is not the only thing in existence. I know it can feel like that sometimes, with trolls hounding you 24/7 over all the dumb naive shit you say, but trust me thats not the case.

If you ever want to stop talking to Internet trolls for a change how about you message me.

I feel for you buddy. You need a mentor not a bully.

No, he needs bullies. We've already tried the mentoring stuff and his response was "I don't need people to guide me. I am perfect and have no flaws. I do not need anyone's approval. I am me." or some bullshit.

He also said something like "I demand respect". He's not looking for a mentor Brian. He's looking for fanboys.

And it looks like he just found one! haha. Sucker.

For the record, he's been on this forum for more than a year now whining and threatening to kill himself.

I think it's time we gut him from the community.
No! I need my daily LULZ!

Still arguing over this? You know that I can ban your new account for ban evasion, right?

I think the question is legitimate, given shakaru's recent problems.
Hmmm..... Good point! That being said, Astana received the original amount and then some back already. There really isn't anything that still needs to be done.

I meant more in terms of determining things about shakaru by re-examining how the astana business went down, in light of what we know now about shakaru. I found it a lot easier to side with shakaru before it turned out he owed >8500 btc to half the community and was avoiding questions about the whole deal until recently. You can only get screwed/scammed so much before one starts wondering if there's an underlying cause.

I have no doubt that astana is hot-headed and is making himself no friends by posting so desperately on this thread. However, if we can look past the confrontational attitude and distorted view of how things work around here, I think there could be some interesting information to be gathered. If he really was a scammer that scammed shakaru out of loads of money, what would be the advantage in creating a new account and then linking it to your old identity? You can scam way more people by not picking up the shit reputation you'd already developed.

The way I see it (and from what he said on IRC between fights with random people), he's hot-headed and even admits to being a bit crazy. But I don't think it's entirely unlikely that there was a massive misunderstanding (to put it diplomatically) that led to the astana/shakaru fiasco we all know so well at this point. Astana has nothing to gain, as a scammer, by trying to clear his name, at this point. Even if he could somehow prove shakaru to be 100% in the wrong, he'd still have a shit reputation around here for being hot-headed. On the other hand, his obvious impulsiveness also means that he's less likely to be plotting devious and nefarious deals to scam more people, and if this was just a ploy to "get back" at shakaru, it isn't working very well, given his current approach.

So as I said, I think we should give him a chance to explain his side of what happened, and do our best not to call him a thief, scammer, or whatever else people seem to enjoy calling him here and on IRC. The benefit of doing this is that, assuming he's not lying, the whole debacle would have been extremely unpleasant for him, so it's just a nice thing to do. But even for purely utilitarian reasons, he does have potentially interesting information on shakaru, which is important now that so many people are starting to doubt his actions were in good faith. So if you want to view not pissing astana off (given his obvious uncontrollable temper) as a way to step through the threats/cockiness and get to the interesting stuff, you can also do that.

Either way, I think there's something to be learned here. I know that several people on IRC have mentioned re-examining the astana/shakaru deal over the past few months, so it could be helpful to finally get as much as possible from the other side of the story.
Said in a fair and informative way. It seems we do need a through review of the whole matter, given shakaru's recent problems. Now if astana was a bit more sociable so to say, he'll have his problems sorted out a lot more easier.

$%^^%$%#!!   Angry Angry Angry

If you fix my name in your OP then I might consider loaning to you again.

How many times do I have to go through this.  I am not that guy and I am not even related to that guy.  For crying out loud!

Bruce = possible scammer

Burt = nice guy and banker

See the difference now  Wink

LOL - had to reread twice to see the point  Grin

From what I hear, 5970's are being replaced by 6990s when there is a warranty claim.

Oh god.  Sad

At this point I am not sure I can even warranty it.  It runs perfectly stable at stock clock and I doubt any warranty guarantees stability at > than stock clock.
Oh no. I just rma'ed a 5870 and a 5850 this week - would they give me a 6xxx card instead?  Cry
