6441  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Pet Project, Antminer U3 on: September 18, 2015, 08:54:55 PM
So I got a Antminer U3 and have been toying around with it.
Sure it doesn't make any ROI, but now for the question! What mining difficulty should I set it to? (Slush's pool)
I have it (currently) at 64, I've tried 512 and 256, but the hash rate on the dashboard/monitor has jumped very erratically.

Thanks for any input!

-Griffeh

A big question on this is are you wanting to mine where you are getting something in return PPS/other types of pools?  Or are you wanting to use it as a lotto miner?

I have some U3's as a lotto setup as I know they will not ROI.  I have them trying to solo a block.  Chances are it will never happen... but still a fun project.

I'm testing it out, learning all the settings that make it hum and buzz at full speed. I'm doing 244MhZ 800mV and it does a flat 60.0 Gh/s safely, once I iron out all the problems, I'll set it up on the magic lotto train to try and get 25 BTC in the sack, you never know! It's just sitting on my desk on some styrofoam. I do have some problems with it wanting brains every few days, just have to reconnect the bugger and it mines away perfectly.  Grin

Right now I'm having good luck with 225.  Getting around  55 Gh/s.   It seems to go up and down some but I'm very happy with it right now.

Still playing with my 3 to find best though.  I have found them fun to play with.
6442  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: September 18, 2015, 08:52:09 PM
Thank you sidehack I got my production unit to play with.  It is a beautiful little stick, and has worked great so far.   I am running a RPI with raspbian and it is working well on it.

The only thing I would warn before jumping into hub with RPI is reading compatibility.  In theory all usb 2 should work.  But I found this not to be the case and it was a pain to get one working.   I had to do a few mod's before I finally got it working.  If you get one that has been tested already and order that hub your life will be much easier.

I've had really good luck with the ORICO 10 port hub. I've got several and have used them with RPis with no issue.

Now I just need to find decent 4 port USB 2 powered hub. Unfortunately everything on the ORICO is USB 3 now. I've heard that USB 3 is problematic with RPi's.

If anyone can recommend a decent inexpensive 4 port USB 2 powered hub that has been known to work with the Pi, that would be great.

3 from all I read is worse then 2 on compatibility with RPI.  I know what you mean those ORICO/Anker hubs were solid hubs I sold all mine though in the block erupter days.

But if you can get one verified to work it is will be very simple with RPI and install.  I had no problem on software was all hardware with hub.  So that is not any fault off Gekko Science.  All RPI issues.
6443  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: How do I buy a block to my address ? on: September 18, 2015, 08:31:17 PM
Once again I'm not sure what you mean by "owning" a block as it makes no sense.

If you open blockchain.info now, you'll find something like this...

374990 - AntPool
374989 - KnCMiner
374988 - F2Pool

This is what I mean by owning a block. For the block I'll buy/find, my name will be written instead of AntPool, KnCMiner or F2Pool.

I would be pretty surprised if any of the pools would mess around with this even if you paid multiple BTC over the regular block fee.   I think you would have to pay much more then you are thinking how you were talking about .5 BTC.

If you are serious and make your own pool, and rent hash it could be done.  But again it is pricey and not guaranteed.

6445  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should i sign a message after changing my bitcoin talk password ? on: September 18, 2015, 08:15:06 PM
I want to change my password and i don't want people to think that i am a hacker (which will degrese my reputation)
should i say that i am the owner of my bitcoin wallet address (now) and then change the password and sign a message from the wallet address that i shared here ?
and what should i type in the signed message ?

You could go to meta on the signed staked address'es.   If you have one staked there write after you change it write a message that can be verified by staked address.

But if you don't have one staked it would not prove much if you staked today and changed password today.
6446  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Keep your system updated and stay secure. Tips to avoid viruses trojans on: September 18, 2015, 08:05:58 PM
I would avoid torrents like the plague if storing hotwallet on it.  I'm really surprised you are using a cracked OS.

I suggest people look into cold wallets.  Also really do not torrent or go to torrent sites.   You are asking to get coins stolen.

yeah i know but i hadn't money at that time for a windows 7 and anyway before anything i started with a very low amount of bitcoin on this system(0.0X) and since then nothing was ever robbed(the old wallet) from me, so i simply continued to add more coins via mining, because i knew it was safe

keep in mind that i never bought any bitcoin, all acquired via mining, i would say instamining, i have nothing to lose  Grin

well maybe 1k of electricity bills...

That is the thing some months if they would have just taken my electricity amount it would have hurt.   I guess I could be considered over protective.  I just think if you holding on a wallet that is not cold, make sure you are safe.

I like having a computer specifically for hot wallet.  It does not have a ton but enough for a purchase or two.  And most are cold.
6447  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: "Miners" looks simple. If You're so smart why not start a company??? on: September 18, 2015, 08:01:08 PM
One word : Risk

Well its a lot of work. Basically monitoring and maintenance is kind of a 24/7 job. I only have a few miners and thats how it is to me. Of course i just minimize the risk change and if something happen during the night i just eat the loss, but if it was a bigger mining operation i'd need staff and such.

Personally i prefer just keeping it private.

Even hosting could get risky like you mention it not being private.  It is one thing to fry your own gear but another thing to hurt someone elses.

It would be horrible to go to people who trusted you and say "Oops it got to hot now half of everything is fried".   Sure that is a kinda worst case.  But it could happen and I don't think to many insurance companies will want to have a hosting operation under them.

I see getting insurance to be kinda hard when they send someone out and see the sheer amount of electricity a commercial center hosting asics would need.  Seems like it would be considered high risk with a pretty high premium if they take you as a client.
6448  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread sept 17th. to sept 30th Picks are closed. on: September 18, 2015, 07:57:17 PM
I really hope the "(+2.90%) for now" is close to get back to the 2 percent norm would be nice.  I'm still not sure though I think there are still a lot of S7's to be made.  Hashnest specifically I think would be a batch itself.

I think that's wishful thinking, I feel another >5% shift this round, but we shall see.  A lot is dependent on the S7s getting out, as has been stated.  Let the fun begin!

I think there will be a batch made for hashnest that has not been made yet on S7's.  So I am being wishful.  Likely we will see another greater then what our norm was.

I really want to be wrong though.
6449  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Project Assistance] Have Access To Free Electricity, but... on: September 18, 2015, 07:51:30 PM
As an EE major I'm sure you are aware of how electricity works.  A lot of those old dorms have outlets that are daisy chained together.  So if lots of people try to copy you you could start tripping breakers or burn the building down.  I would look into the electrical system of your dorm and make sure you're not going to run any risks of fire etc.  If your project is successful everyone is going to want to do what you do and the dorm probably doesn't have the power for it.

Reread up on his second post it is not dorm mining it will be in " it will be in basically a glorified closet with a display window that's used for nothing more than showing off the engineering department's projects.".   So it's to show off projects of engineering students.

I personally would never dorm mine with the sound. (One could make a argument for the avalon 4.1's)  I don't think it is something that will catch on and bunch of students in dorm do.

Yes OP explained that the project would run in an engineering section, on some sort of display case/closet. The place is cooled and maintained. He is not going to sleep next to a 75dB miner. Of this we made certain.

As such we are merely waiting for OP to clarify/consolidate his plan.

If he sticks with one pool, depending on the pool it could show a lot of the data.  Anything from total BTC earned to hashrate with nice graphs over X days.

So showing data I think is easy.  It's just just getting the permission to put a miner in it.  I could see a little trouble with it as not developed by a student they might not really care about it.  So might take something extra to get them to add it to room.

Nothing to spectacular.  Just a few starting me off in my new found hobby of lotto mining.

In it:
3x Bitmain U3's
3x Gekko Science Compac's (each a different stage)
1x Avalon nano

you just need to handshake with the top 3 or 4 builders to increase as a team.

I'll go ahead and stop you right there Phillip  Wink  Have you ever seen anything that has lead you to believe there is even professional courtesy for one another among the big dogs, let alone actual collusion?

They can work together when they need to.  Look at the 51 percent day's with ghash.  Do you honestly believe the companies were not talking to each other for a fix and trying to decide what to do?

Chances are they did not do this on the S7 as far as making it.  I doubt they told other companies they would keep 28 NM and let other companies spend much more time and money on lower nm.   So they are also able to keep secrets to.

I suggest trying a live usb of Debian - https://www.debian.org/.   With live usb you can run off a usb stick and not even have to do a install on HD.
So your suggestion is for me to run another OS?  Hmm, that seems like quite a reach just to get a couple stick miners hashing.  My XP machine is my main computer, I use it for a lot of stuff including my bitcoin node, not sure I want to go messing with additional operating systems...

Be sure to run zadig as administrator.  I plugged in 1 stick at a time and made sure zadig used the correct driver.  Is you batch file specifying a frequency ...
cgminer -o stratum+tcp://stratum.mining.eligius.st:3334 -u 1BURGERAXHH6Yi6LRybRJK7ybEm5m5HwTr --compac-freq 150
I understand how to use zadig, that is not an issue here.  As shown in my post I am specifying a frequency.

It honestly is not a lot of work to try it on live usb then you know if it works.  Zadig just is a pain and seems not to be perfect.  Debian no zadig to mess around with.

I suggest at least trying it once see what it does.
6454  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Hands On] Bitmain AntMiner S5+ - Notlist3d on: September 18, 2015, 05:55:42 PM

I'm disappointed with the heatsink falling off.  I was hoping they would treat them like gold with RMA and get you perfect boards.

Was one heatsink all that fell off? Or did others seem loose?

I put with a akasa thermal adhesive tape  a second radiator from BFL Single 25GH/s , and it seems that everything is working.

But I'm also disappointed. I noticed the missing radiator only when I started to put blades in the place .

I found the missing radiator in bubble wrap.
It seems that this time it is used thermal adhesive tape, not glue.

But I'm sure it's not a good design. Poor material for bonding the radiators, and more are not needed. Radiators fall like  apples from the apple tree.  Chinese autumn. Radiators  were ready for picking.

I'm happy they decided to use them though.  On the regular S5 they went back and forth on if units had heatsinks.   So I think loose is better then none.

But it does seem they need to choose another adhesive for shipment to customers.
6455  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best Bitcoin Mining hardware ? on: September 18, 2015, 05:19:22 PM
There is no one size fit's all in so much on bitcoin.  I think it varies greatly on what could be considered best hardware.  With high to normal electricity only option is really newest gear out there to stand a chance.   S5-S7ish gear currently.

If you have cheap electricity some still make a killing off S3's.  They are lucky but they are better off with used miners as they can ROI quicker in some cases since they pay much less.

Some are so high they will never ROI.  Also think of import/vat some that kills any deal.   So really need to know more about OP's situation.

But I found windows to be a pain with drivers I used 7 and 8.  Went to debian and no issues.   Then I went to RPI and raspbian (which is built off debian) and still working great.

With linux just no messing with the drivers and very very nice.
6457  Economy / Goods / Re: Selling gems and jewels from Peru on: September 18, 2015, 05:03:05 PM
I understand that escrow is a money warranty.
Maybe I must explain.
I have a period of monetary liquidity unavailability.
I have credit sources in banks, but I do not want to use credit bank support.
Peru is a dificult market for my merchandise.
That is why I want to make business worldwide.
I have top quality merchandise but most people in Peru still have doubts except when the deal involves citrines, topazes and amethysts, because Brazil that is close neighbor of Peru is well known supplier.
In Peru most people use to make jewel business with silver and crysocolla.
I am an engineer, I have verified the quality of my gemstones.
But only other engineer could understand easily if for example the subject is cryptography and maybe not many engineers.
About "Handle my terms", I am not english native.
What I ment is customize an agreement with an escrow business partner.

I don't think there is a lot of customizing to do.  Most likely the escrow will be based on the gem being real.   Possibly size not being off.   But the biggest thing that they are real and the one's pictured and real.

All products will likely have the same escrow.  You might want to find a good escrow and show everyone what a "handle my terms" escrow looks like.  If you get it in writing and a good escrow then likely you will be able to sell here.
6458  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is my Avalon trashed? on: September 18, 2015, 04:21:00 PM
Guess wot? Just made the fuck up of the century. Roll Eyes
Mate of mine is moving house, and since the BT has collapsed big time, he decided to give 2 of them cunts to me, 1 200G, and 1 1T...
But I assumed that the biggest case was the 1T, how wrong was I (goes to show that assumption is the mother of all fuck ups Grin), also because the web page of the 1T is proper wank, while the other one looks pretty slick.
To cut a long story short, just fired up the right one, and the cunt is mining away with 1T, so the future looks bright and prosperous! Tongue

I still suggest doing some ROI math.  A lot can depend on electricity price.  Free is a nice price for a miner.

What is your electricity price?  And how many watts is the 1T taking?
6459  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining Profitable? on: September 18, 2015, 04:18:22 PM
Assuming you don't have a current rig to set up, is it still possible to make money mining?  I am thinking not because of electricity cost/etc.  But I just wanted to come ask the question that has been asked numerous time since the start,

Can you actual profit by purchasing rigs and mining?

There is so many varibles not a one size fits all anwser.  For example electricity is very important.  What is your electricity?  Does your country have a vat/import tax? If so how much?

You really have to do your own ROI math as just to many varibles for it to be as I call one size fit's all.

Thanks for the response, my electricity is actually rather expensive roughly I use 11.6KwH per day for about $1.72 at the moment, I believe its about .15 cents per KWH.

(I think that is expensive anyway)

I know that back when I was looking to getting into mining the block and difficulty was going up so fast it was next to impossible to gain anything from it, just seeing if times have changed.

At .15 cents I would not recommend getting into mining.  You might find a place to host and stand a better chance to ROI.

Just that electricity price kills most ROI chances.  It is sad but electricity makes a huge difference in this game.
6460  Economy / Goods / Re: Selling gems and jewels from Peru on: September 18, 2015, 04:14:18 PM
I am ok with the 1% payment for escrow service.
Let's work out the issue escrow together.
I can send one item 004 or 005 world wide considering its prize as warranty and anticipated payment for escrow service for my escrow business partner.
I wonder if a BIG5 could handle my terms.

I think you will find a problem only letting certain items being escrowed.  I'm not saying you are a bad seller, but one who was a bad seller would select real gems and allow escrow on them.  And fake gems would want to "handle my terms."

So I suggest letting all items be escrowed.  And if for some reason you cant let a certain gem go through escrow I would not list it on this site.
