6481  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Taproot proposal on: May 30, 2021, 09:47:47 AM
I like the recent change that is although not actually any change but just a way to make the result more accurate. The signalling blocks is already 90% but the lock-in is when 1815 signalling blocks are mined. I did the ratio and it is appropriately maximum of 90% signal block that could contain in 2016 blocks. So, it do does not necessarily mean when 2016 blocks are mined, it is when 1815 blocks are mined.

1815/2016 * 100 = 90.02976190476190%

Which is ~90%

Reaching 90% is not indicative of a softfork lock-in. 1815 blocks within a period have to signal for the Taproot softfork to lock in.

Is anyone really surprised to see that Marathon pool is the only one not signaling for Taproot activation?
I am not surprised at all, but problem is they are growing in hashrate with their new 73,000 miners starting to run in Texas with plan to have total of 103,000 miners with 10.36 EH/s hashrate.
It is still very possible MARA Pool will signal. Even if the pool does not signal, it will not affect the softfork lock-in, provided if other mining pools continuing signalling. Currently at 98.33% when 60 blocks have been mined, only one block did not signal which is from MARA Pool. MARA Pool mining hashes is insignificantly in relation the the lock-in if others Pools continuing signalling.

It's basically not possible for everything to be taught in schools, imo, it'll be absurd for a course such as 'scam' to spring up in colleges and other levels of education, reason being that there is what's called intuitive knowledge; and that's what people ought to apply in situations such as obvious scam attempts. People should learn to "be their own security" and not look to the government or any other institution to protect them, sometimes all that's needed to curb people getting scammed is if they can control their own avarice.
There must be scam awareness for scam rate to reduce, and people should be taught in practical ways using forums like Bitcointalk and real life scam examples. If not because of the awareness we have on this forum, many of us would be scammed. I still remembered a day I was using pay-to-click site to earn unprofitable amount of Bitcoin before joining this forum, there was a ad that I clicked on, the site displayed me Bitcoin mining in progress, the site mined me 0.005 BTC in less than 15 seconds, displayed to me to pay 0.002 BTC into one bitcoin address to claim the mined amount, thanks to the fact I had no money to pay at the time, I would have fallen victim. Posts on this forum really oriented, just because we are educating ourselves about scam and other related matters happening in the world. If this can be introduced in schools, this will also go a long way, not even only in college but starting from high schools. They best way to prevent scam is not about government depriving people of their privacy, it is about teaching people how to avoid it with practical examples, and schools are the best means for this in away those taught in school can also educate people at home and others.
6483  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are scammers getting dumber? Or is it people they aim for are so naïve? on: May 30, 2021, 08:41:38 AM
I received a call from my "bank support line" a while ago. Now these people were real con artists, they had all my data, used correct chat scripts etc. It all sounded so legit I almost missed the moment they asked me for SMS confirmation code, at which point I realized it's a scam. Not being sympathetic to these guys but at least they were highly professional and inventive scammers, unlike those I mentioned above.
There is one I heard of recently, the scammer will call you, telling you about the school of your child, the scammer will be posing like a worker from the school. It will tell you there is a parents teacher (PTA) meeting going on, that it is very important. He will tell you that you will receive a code that will be sent to your mobile phone number, that you should tell him the code so that he can be able to link you to the meeting going on online. I have seen people saying this has bee used to scam them in my country.

Somw people falled for this scam just because it doesn't want to look like scam until they are scammed, even if the call is from the school, the person need to use the official school number to call the school before proceeding doing anything.

Some of the victim said they later called the school, telling them if true about the meeting, but the school will tell them there is no ongoing meeting. But because the code has bee sent, they scam is already elicited and successful, this is done in a way money is withdrawn from the victim's bank account.

Although, this is not totally crypto related, but it is worth knowing, that we should not click on any of such message, not to talk of telling the caller the code received.
6484  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Protect your valuable personal information by avoiding tempting offers! on: May 29, 2021, 06:41:08 PM
This reminds me of more than 10 years ago when my friend got text message from a company manufacturing soft drinks, unknown to both of us that it was a scam, my friend did not participate in any contest or anything that can result to him wining $300 in my country's currency at the time. In the message my friend won $300 and a phone number was in the message that he can call to claim the $300.

He called the number, he was instructed to send $30 worth of recharge card in order to claim the $300, he sent it and he was scammed. If I remind him of the day, he'd remember there was a day he was foolish. Although, we were quite young at the time.

So, the scam can be as a result of phishing text message, or phishing email, few can also be through call. But the best way to avoid this type of scam is to avoid pay 2 to get 4 or more.

For scam awareness, I wonder why governments have never had scam as a subject in schools. People should have been learning how to avoid scam even in the basic schools, all what the governments are doing is to deprive people of privacy and yet scam never ceased.

Nigerian government go legalize Bitcoin soon?

Emefiele no directly mention a decision to reverse the CBN’s February ban of institutions from buying and selling crypto but noted that the bank dey investigating the industry:

See waiting CBN governor talk recently:

“We are committed in the CBN, and I can assure everybody that digital currency will come to life even in Nigeria [...] Under cryptocurrency and Bitcoin, Nigeria comes 2nd, while on the global side of the economy, Nigeria comes 27th. We are still conducting our investigation, and we will make our data available.”

Waiting you people think go happen? I dey see this in a direction CBN go legalize cryptocurrencies in Nigeria soon. Waiting una think?
6486  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware Wallet protection on a online computer on: May 29, 2021, 10:15:21 AM
[AFAIK, CoolWallet has a secure element which makes it that much harder to extract the seeds in the first place.
I did not mean secure element or not. I meant how uncommon wallets can have unkown vulnerabilities, unlike the common ones like Trezor, Ledger Nano and Cold Card wallet that have been researched more about by experts. The vulnerability that was found in Coolwallet is not about the secure wallet, it is about having access to the hardware wallet and the phone used to access the wallet. The attack can even be through malware or physical theft of both the phone and the hardware wallet which will make the seed phrase to be know.

We recently discovered the CoolWallet S Android application stores the wallet’s PIN, pairing password, and hardware seed in plaintext. This vulnerability means that if the phone becomes compromised, either by physical theft or with malware, the attacker can easily obtain everything they need to empty the paired hardware wallet.

Additionally, the hardware wallet is reliant on the security protections of the paired phone. If the attacker gets both your phone and wallet, they can unlock your wallet and either pair it to another phone or send funds directly from the device with the push of a button.

Although, there was a report from Coolwallet company that the vulnerability has been fixed. But I am talking generally about wallets that are not common, not about secure element. Also Coolwallet suffer some other vulnerability which not yet mention here.
6487  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware Wallet protection on a online computer on: May 29, 2021, 07:57:32 AM
So hackers can't execute hacking online and extract your private key, unless if a hacker will physically access to steals your hardware wallet.
You are right but not totally true.

Like if using hardware wallet like Ledger Nano, it has a secure element but which is close source, the secure element makes it impossible for hackers that steal Ledger Nano wallet to get access to the seed phrase, if the seed phrase can no be accessed, then no access to the private key. So the thieves will only steal the device for nothing.

It is very possible hackers can steal Trezor and able to access the seed phrase, this vulnerability has been discovered by Krakn like two or three years ago. But the use of passphrase to extent the seed will help for such hackers not to be able to access the cryptocurrencies because salting process in which additional words (passphrase) are used lead to generation of different keys entirely which will make it impossible for hakerd to get through to steal your funds.

There are some uncommon hardware wallets, example is the Coolwallet S that do not support passphrase and yet such physical attack can lead to access to its passphrase seed phrase, this will only make hackers to steal such wallet to get through by knowing the wallet seed phrase and have access to the keys generated by the wallet. That is why it is good not to use uncommon hardware wallet.
6488  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin double spend on: May 28, 2021, 10:40:24 PM
Stay away on that services. If you want boost your unconfirmed transaction. Its better to use TX accelerator services like viabtc. https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator
Any Bitcoin transaction with less than 10 sat/byte (not sat/vbyte) can not be freely accelerated by ViaBTC acceleratator, the paid one may become the only choice at times, and of which not also recommended because of high fee that will be demanded by the paid accelerator.

It is better to use electrum, making sure the transaction support replace-by-fee, even if the transaction has a very low fee, it can easily be pumped to any higher fee amount. Pumping the fee is the best choice, but a transaction that does not support replace-by-fee can not be easily pumped, the sender may not even have choice than to wait for it to be confirmed which might take days or weeks or even more months.
6489  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin double spend on: May 28, 2021, 10:28:54 PM
The mistake of most people is that they are not using Bitcoin wallet that can double-spend. If you want to be able to double-spend unconfirmed Bitcoin in a transaction, all you need to do is to make use of electrum wallet. You can use this guild to know how you can download electrum from https://electrum.org and verify its signature.

On electrum wallet, you can create a transaction that support replace-by-fee, if you send Bitcoin to an address, and not yet confirmed, if the transaction support replace-by-fee, you can double-spend the Bitcoin into another address with high fee. But know that if the Bitcoin transaction has been confirmed, it can not be double-spent again, only unconfirmed Bitcoin transaction can be double-spent with higher fee into another address or cancelled in a way it will be sent back into another address on your elecrum wallet.

Moderators are not concerned about this, it is the person that created the thread that deleted all the posts there. It is better not to post in a self-moderated thread created by a newbie. At least, let the person that created self-moderated thread to be a reputed member before you post under such thread.
6491  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What about Litecoin? on: May 28, 2021, 08:35:45 PM
Litecoin wasn't stagnant, I remembered there was a time in 2020 its price was $40, it increased to over $300 this year, which means it is not stagnant, but it is not increasing to the extent you expected, but it actually increased. Litecoin was part of the first seven cryptocurrencies in marketcap but now fourteenth. One of the reason I think litecoin lack behind is that it does not have tokens, just like DeFi projects that also will increase its price, if its blockchain supports many tokens like ethereum, its price would have increased more. I think litecoin is worth holding as it will not be the only coin your are holding, it is possible there will be one time its price will increase than expected.
6492  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Who can stop Bounty Campaign Scam? on: May 28, 2021, 06:19:57 PM
Ultimately it's the fault of bounty managers - they shouldn't take on shitty projects (at least not without escrow), and they should enforce quality controls. But if you're blindly signing up for campaigns that have none of that, you shouldn't be complaining.
Bounties scam at times may not be the fault of the bounty manager, the problem do comes from the fact that the bounty hunters are paid in bounty coin or token. Just like the recent student coin, participants were expecting over $2000 (I am not 100% sure) worth of the the coin given, but later resulted to scam. There are some that resulted to pump and dump in the past, which result to abrupt and significant drop of the bounty coin when listed in which the bounty hunters will also lose. But, the reality is that one bounty hunters can participate in many bounty projects, some are profitable but many are not profitable and some result to pure scam. The best are just the signature campaign that its campaign manager is reputed an the payment is Bitcoin or coins that can not be manipulated, if the certain amount is with campaign manager already, participants will not have doubt and they will all be paid accordingly.

The bounty coin or token can be escrowed but yet lead to exit scam after successful ICO
Also the bounty coin or token can be escrowed and yet significant fall in price of the coin or token that will not make the escrowed amount profitable.

The scam is as a result of the bounty coin or token which will become shit coin immediately after listing it on exchanges with significant price drop, or that will not even later exist after exit scam of an ICO.
6493  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Will old Electrum versions work after taproot ? on: May 28, 2021, 05:15:04 PM
I understand why you're reluctant to update your system, and since you don't make a lot of transactions you'll likely find yourself in this situation again and again.  It might be better for you to use a hardware wallet, which effectively gives you the security you're looking for.
The main advantage of hardware wallet over electrum cold wallet is that hardware wallet support multiple currencies, if someone has a device he can use as an electrum cold wallet, and if the person only want to hold/use bitcoin, I do not see the point of getting a hardware wallet when the electrum cold wallet can do the same while the private key was also generated offline and remain offline and not connected to the online or to the watch-only wallet. What we can tell adaseb is that updating the wallet is safe, but updating it safely, following security and safety precautions.
6494  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Who can stop Bounty Campaign Scam? on: May 28, 2021, 04:41:11 PM
Bounties can result to scam, bounty hunters are paid in coins or tokens that is being promoted. This makes it difficult or impossible for the bounty manager to have escrowed amount. The promoted coin or token can be manipulated and it might not even later exist.

If you want a campaign that will not lead to scam, go for signature campaigns in which certain amount would have been escrowed to a reputed campaign manager before the start of the campaign, else good luck.

<...>
In addition, some bounty projects are pump and dump. Also, like you commented, many will result to exit scam.
6495  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and value comparsion with fiat Currency on: May 28, 2021, 02:21:07 PM
The existence of the inferior makes people to follow the superior, that is the reason fiat is very important. Because fiat always in long term devalue as a result of governmental (central) control, that is why one of the reasons the price of bitcoin do increase, but also the price increases most especially because people are buying it and its design like limited supply, but comparing it to fiat makes people to know how deflationary Bitcoin can be as the price increases. If we do not compare it to fiat, then how will people even like Bitcoin.
6496  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Blood Pressure, I donīt understand it. But I want to. on: May 28, 2021, 02:11:58 PM
<...>
You are right, fat accoumlation in the body can lead to high blood pressure, someone's lifestyle generally can have effect, that is why it is good to exercises to burn fat (Generally exercise do good to the body), eating healthy foods and fruits and sleeping early (not sleeping late at night). But also we should avoid too much stress, it can also result to hypertension, both physical or emotional stress.

About the type of food to eat, we should avoid fatty foods, scientists research that eating cholesterol directly in diet is not responsible for high bad cholesterol level in the body (low density lipoprotein), but what is most responsible for the bad cholesterol in the body are fatty foods, most of this are directly eating from diets. Reducing fat intake will really help in the body not accoumlating bad cholesterol.
6497  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Has anyone used the CoolWallet S? on: May 28, 2021, 08:05:12 AM
Ah, thank you for that--I wasn't even aware that there was such a tool to analyze ratings.  Assuming it's true that there's minimal deception (that kind of makes me chuckle), it seems like the wallet isn't a total dud.
There is another site trustpilot that I was using for review before I joined Bitcointalk. But what I noticed about these kind of review is that only little information can be gotten from the reviewers as they do not know much about full wallet function like while using Trezor or Ledger Nano on desktop computer. In such review like on Amazon I noticed some reviewer were condemning Ledger Nano, some reviewers might be from the wallet company reviewing it themselves after buying the wallet from Amazon, although I may be wrong.

The wallet is just a phone (iOS and Android) compatible wallet that may not support computer, but it is water proof according to a YouTube video I saw on their official site.

Most hardwallet nowadays are only supporting mobile phones to operate, what a bad idea to me, using hardware on desktop wallet like electrum is far better than the phones which most of these people prefer for convenience reason. I have not seen any of these mobile compatible wallets to support coin control and some other features that desktop electrum can provide.
6498  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Shorting Crypto – Beginner’s How-to Guide on: May 28, 2021, 07:14:00 AM
Short is different than sell. Newbies misunderstand short and sell. Short (Short position). Short positions are for short term. If you open a short position, you have to know how long you can let it opens and be safe.
Short is not necessary for a short or long term, also long position is not necessary for a short or long term, it depends on what you analyzed and speculated, it also depends on the leverage used, you may decide to trade future and not use leverage to minimize risk to a greater extent. In margin trading, short simply means sell while long simply means buy.
6499  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Will old Electrum versions work after taproot ? on: May 28, 2021, 06:57:04 AM
Backward compatibility should not be what to worry about as taproot is just like segwit soft fork, as wallets that supported legacy before they begin to support segwit, this does not result to disuse of legacy addresses. Also because of taproot soft fork, if wallets started to support taproot, it will not make the wallet not backward compatible, you will still be able to make transactions with your legacy addresses. But, it is better to make use of new version of a software or app, because the old versions can be vulnerable by attackers. Also, though you do not make frequent transactions, but making use of segwit still comes with low transaction fee in a way 42% to about 52% fee can be reduced depending on your transaction input and output if compared with legacy. At least, upgrade to the latest version will not do you anything than good and better experience while using the wallet, then why no go for it.
6500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: There are not even 21M BTCs, I'd say max.17M BTCs available at a given time on: May 27, 2021, 08:50:24 PM
You mean when all Bitcoin are already mined? Yes, there can not be 21 million Bitcoin, some are lost already truly. And any Bitcoin lost forever is a gain for those having the one not lost, because the reduction in circulatory supply, the higher the price. Although the limited supply (and lost Bitcoin) will help in the price valuation, but also increasing demand will be the another major factor to increase the price. As more people know more about bitcoin, they will buy and the price will increase.
