6501  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica has paid out the first day's interest! on: February 18, 2012, 05:01:07 PM
lets take a look at current situation, the market is stupid seams ppl dont want to trade, orders are ridiculously low(no depth), i have low incentive to enter the market, you add on top of that the position fees, leverage restrictions, well guess what i better stay out of the market with my moneys and gain a nice interest, from your end can look different but from my end is like that 20% APY is awesome Smiley

Right, you need to strike a balance that doesn't excessively punish the people who give you 99% of your profits.  There should be little to no interest for a position unless the reserves are running low on that side.  I understand the need for consistent returns for depositors, but you don't need to consistently return over 5%.

Also, @myself, you don't earn the sell, you earn the buy, so it's only ~5.27 APY.

What do you guys think?

Both systems are shit.  Wink

All systems are shit. Wink

There are too many conflicting objectives.
6504  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Thread about GPU-mining and Litecoin on: February 17, 2012, 06:33:46 PM
I guess everyone is ignoring my math that it is currently more profitable to mine LTC on a gpu rig than it is to mine bitcoins on that same rig.

Admittedly this is with the gpu miner kept private. If the gpu miner is released to the public, the ltc difficulty will likely increase, making the profit margin smaller, or putting bitcoin back in the lead.
--- in the quote bold by me ---

that may be the truth...

you can post this the whole day long...

but who cares about a private software and the math with it, especially everyone...

Right, we can't verify your numbers without access to said miner.

The emails even violate our values because they interfere with the use of private property.

When I saw this I wondered if the Judge could possibly elaborate on it.

Computers (and possibly email software, but that's a separate debate) are property.  The can't use their email properly because their techs aren't smart enough to filter everything with the words "freedom watch".  Depending on the sheer volume, they may also need additional hardware.

You might argue that they left it open to receive and so it's their fault, but that's like blaming the homeowner who leaves his door unlocked when a thief steals his TV.
6506  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How can blockchain.info use the MtGox yubikey? on: February 17, 2012, 06:16:03 PM
https://blockchain.info/wallet/yubikey

How is this possible? Don't they need both the MtGox AES key and the user's AES key for the Yubikey in order to make this work?
Oh dear. If you use your MtGox Yubikey on there you're effectively giving them the ability to log in to your MtGox account and according to the MtGox TOS you'll be liable for any losses that result from this. (In fact, that's quite likely to be how they do it. The other possibility is that they only bother checking the static bits of the Yubikey authentication string, which they can do without knowing the secret embedded in it but which doesn't add any security.)

Not without your password.
6507  Economy / Speculation / Re: What if Bitcoinica requires identification for all customers? on: February 17, 2012, 06:08:02 PM
What if this is only required before you deposit or withdraw fiat?

Here's how I see it:
  • If you're depositing or withdrawing fiat, that money has to go through a traditional clearinghouse, where you can be identified by "someone with a warrant" already.
  • If you're not depositing or withdrawing fiat (e.g. using bitcoins as maintenance for going long), then your use of Bitcoinica isn't in any way touching the money to which regulation applies, until and unless BTC's legal status switches to being considered currency itself.
So, folks who really want to deal anonymously would still be able to use Bitcoinica for those purposes that make sense, and maybe whatever legal requirements Zhou is sweating about would still be fulfilled?

Just an idea.

Good compromise, but I'm concerned that since they are still taking out USD loans to go long, or purchasing USD with BTC to go short the government will require identification.  Perhaps not, but I'm almost certain my government would.
6508  Economy / Services / Re: Medical Consult for Bitcoins on: February 17, 2012, 05:55:43 PM
My google-fu is pretty strong, plus I've long had an interest in health (from an Ayeurvedic perspective, but a body is a body), so DrG really just confirmed my self-diagnosis.  That said, it's comforting to have a professional double check my thought process, and provide some extra detail.  He also cleared up one point I was unsure on (should I force eating, or wait for hunger).  Highly recommended.
6509  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] FPGA Mining Contract on: February 17, 2012, 04:30:24 PM
Then he was generous, but the testing should have been voted on (not that anyone in their right mind would vote against it).

Right, because a corporation should never take an action without asking shareholders.

"Should I answer the phone?"

"Hold on, let me put it to a vote."

i don't think that testing newer software is for personal benefit
newer software means better performance or stability

This... he was improving the mining setup.
6512  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: February 17, 2012, 03:08:08 PM

No, you'd be long from $0.50 to $15 ish, short from $15 to $2.5, then long again from $2.5 to $6 for a total profit of 132x (>10000%)...

RyNinDaCleM is correct in the context they are discussing, inau is correct if you do it right, but obviously didn't read.

Right now, there is so much unscientific BS going on with the AGW claims that you might as well declare it a state religion rather than hard science.

It should be obvious to everyone, but I think Jersey Shore and Justin Bieber have melted everyone's brains.

History will see our era as the lost era.  Imagine where we would be without video games and reality tv.
What's wrong with video games? Are you one of these? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMgyMh01DbA

Meh, it's just at this point I understand what a waste of time they are.  I've spent many a day's time in front of my computer without producing anything of value.  Sure, I got some nice neurotransmitters, and it insulated my young mind from the harsh realities of our world.  But, there as so much better things I could have spent my time doing, like learning or programming.
6514  Economy / Speculation / Re: automated trading on: February 17, 2012, 03:32:23 AM
its not going to work bud...these indicators are great and all until they fail, and when they fail, they will kill your account. Automated trading only works if you possess expensive and complicated algorithms which Goldman Sachs (as an example) had at one point along with having loads of money to actually manipulate the market. The trick to using all of these indicators is blending them...not taking any one by themselves. All those commercials you see on TV about these perfect trading systems that do the work for you are a load of crap. If everyone could do and afford it then everyone would be rich...think about it.

now join my charting service already  Wink

..just to disclose some information: me and some friends are currently working on a fully automated trading system.
we are at the moment evaluating proper indicators and setting up a environment to backtest the system.

it will probably not make use of 'complicated' indicators and stick to the common ones: MACD, SMA, EMA, Volatility

..what indicators do you trust in the most?

Trend following (MA crossovers) could work on a small scale.

Edit: But only until Bitcoin becomes less volatile.  Crossovers keep you on the correct side of the trend, and Bitcoin has big trends.

When I took Java, I made a program that emulated a magic 8 ball. Do you want me to PM you the code?

Here's some Ruby to do that:

class Array
  def random_element
    self[rand(self.length)]
  end
end

['Yes', 'No', 'Maybe So', 'Ask again'].random_element
6516  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 17, 2012, 03:19:52 AM
hi pirate

Question...

How do payouts work? I have been mining for about 24 hours now and sold a few bitcoins worth of public shares, how do I withdraw the money? I dont see any balance anywhere or anything? Its a little confusing, please explain ... thanks! Smiley

Your balance will be dumped to you withdrawal address once a day, usually around noon CST.

Manual withdrawal is not available yet.

6519  Economy / Speculation / Re: The fact that bitcoins are $4.25 US is amazing. on: February 17, 2012, 12:18:23 AM
Its not that amazing when you consider it used to be worth $32

This is fun. I can play too. 10,000 Bitcoins used to buy you a pizza.

Try TWO pizzas.
