6561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it just me, or does this chart look too uniform? on: August 01, 2014, 10:00:07 PM
... mining pools block transactions.

Mining pools don't block transactions - they merely choose to include less than all the transactions available. All these transactions are still broadcast throughout the network.

Quote
some pools, due to the lying and stupid excuse of saying its to reduce orphaned blocks.

'Lying'? 'Stupid'? Can you cite such a lie? My understanding is that they are acting to maximize their profits, under the current rules of the system. In what way is this 'stupid'?

Perhaps you should get working on your alt that solves the bootstrapping problem in another manner - that satisfies your own personal sense of justice.

You can't avoid a currency (pessos) crisis by investing in another currency

A people cannot, but a person damn sure can.
6563  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Micronation that uses bitcoin and other cryptocurrency as its national currency. on: July 31, 2014, 04:15:07 PM
The Internet and Bitcoin are tools of direct P2P interactions, which bypass the intermediary of The State. There is a nonzero possibility that the use of these tools (and others) may bring about a vast change in the social order, perhaps leading to the demise of the nation-state.

These micronations may be good laboratories for experimenting with new social order. At this point in time, with various nation-states claiming dominion over every square millimeter of the planet, we have little choice in this endeavor than in creating overlapping jurisdictions.

The more experiments, the better.

I'll agree with franky1 on one point - if you are abiding by the dictates of another entity, then by definition you  not a sovereign nation. But demeaning this endeavor by calling the participants kids and such is merely hateful.

Incidentally, the American plan was that each and every individual was to be sovereign. This is encoded within our founding documents. That hasn't quite worked out in practice.
6564  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory Wallet Intro Message - Scares me on: July 31, 2014, 07:06:07 AM
Who would feel safe with that?

The former lead developer (i.e. the person with the most clout) for all of Bitcoin still repeats 'Bitcoin is an experiment. Don't invest any money that you cannot afford to lose' (paraphrased).

Perhaps you're not ready for Bitcoin.
6565  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Overstock’s Radical Plan to Reinvent the Stock Market With Bitcoin on: July 31, 2014, 05:10:51 AM
Byrne is a Rockstar.

Have you ever watched his tutorial series on Naked Short Selling? Highly recommended.

This made me laugh:

Quote
Angel agrees that a cryptosecurity could close certain market loopholes. But he also questions whether it would suit the high-speed world of Wall Street trading. “There’s some latency in settling a bitcoin trade. It can take anywhere from several seconds to hours to get a transactions completed,” he says. “In a world where people want to trade quickly, putting that kind of a delay into the system could make it a non-starter.”

The aberration that _allows_ for naked short selling is the fact that stocks are supposed to settle within a couple of days after the transaction is made. And sometimes they don't. A Naked Short Sale of several days is indistinguishable from a several day Failure To Settle. This is the very mechanism by which the pinstriped bandits steal the wealth of the populace.

This Angel guy is harping about an hour? What a shill.
6566  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: POLL: How do you think government regulation will effect bitcoin? on: July 31, 2014, 03:37:27 AM
if ANY new york resident (customer) uses ANY service ANYWHERE on the planet then that service will need to pay for a bitlicence, insurance, employe a compliance officer (or pay one to get trained).

Not quite - banks are exempt from all of the bitlicense requirements.
6567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin-Qt - "System error: Database corrupted" on: July 30, 2014, 07:50:06 PM
Well, things are going from bad to worse for me. For the backstory, see:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=714532.msg8071977#msg8071977

At this point, when I launch Bitcoin-Qt (v0.8.6.-beta on OS X 10.7.5), it starts 'Verifying Blocks...' then 'Loading wallet...', then I get a dialog with a red octagon with the white exclamation point, saying "System error: Database corrupted".

In trying to recover from a previous issue (see linked thread), I last night invoked 'Bitcoin-Qt -reindex', and went to bed with that operation running. This morning, Bitcoin-Qt had crashed. I get the above error dialog upon trying to run Bitcoin-Qt again.

Free space on my drive was down to 2.2 GB this morning. I am hoping this may be a relevant factor. I have since cleared 96 GB of space on the disk.

So with all that as background, are there suggested recovery instructions posted somewhere? I'd rather not blow everything away and reload the entire blockchain, but I of course will if necessary.
6568  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Andreas Antonopoulos on Bitcoin | Maker Faire 2014 on: July 30, 2014, 05:58:40 PM
I just watched this. Another excellent talk.

Here's an email I am sending out to many of my contacts:

----------------------

Are you concerned about America losing its economic edge? There are intelligent, industrious, and hungry people all over the world. In our connected society, any other area has the potential to displace the US as the center of innovation. Any regulatory overreach may thwart American innovation, allowing some other region to dominate in technology, innovation, and economic growth.

At the close of the 19th century, what mistakes did England make, which allowed the USA to capture its role as the leading center of industrial power?

Is taking coins which were indisputably mine in order to pay of WEEX's other debts legitimate, criminal, neither, or ambiguous?

Criminal - their part of the agreement was to hold your assets on _your_ behalf.

This is even worse than being goxxed over and over again! Even Mt. Gox payed back those 800 BTC one guy send them after they've gone insolvent.

In the interest of accuracy, Mt Gox did not return those funds. The court-appointed bankruptcy administrator returned those funds.
6570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: New Tor 3.6.3, no Vidalia, now Bitcoin-Qt can't connect on: July 30, 2014, 05:48:46 AM
EDIT: Here is the raw block, try "submitblock <hex>"

Like in the debug window console? It responds with "Safe mode: Warning: Displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade. (code -2)", and the information tab still lists 312933.

EDIT: I don't know what I am looking for, but I see nothing in the log that would seem to correspond to the submitblock.
6571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: New Tor 3.6.3, no Vidalia, now Bitcoin-Qt can't connect on: July 30, 2014, 05:40:52 AM
Thanks for chiming in Challisto.

I'm over my depth here. But things continue to look funny. If you scrutinize your linked transaction, it indicates that 13MuqnHSqDX1KyCM4GKpT3ZkvqwxyiRor2 has been spent.

But if you look at https://blockchain.info/block/0000000000000000371fcf07810c3ac1b9c17daa5ddc9710dea32158d3f75665, it shows    13MuqnHSqDX1KyCM4GKpT3ZkvqwxyiRor2 as unspent.

That just seems weird to me.

Further, isn't it normal to receive invalid blocks? Should my client not just have discarded it, and grabbed another copy of height 312934?
6572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: New Tor 3.6.3, no Vidalia, now Bitcoin-Qt can't connect on: July 30, 2014, 04:23:20 AM
The message simply means you are not completely synced.  The db is fine.  Let me know if Bitcoin Core starts syncing once you let it run for a bit.

Nope - still stuck at block 312933. I've done some spelunking in the logs. Bearing in mind that I've not scrutinized bitcoind logs before, I think the problem is that nobody will send me block 312934, even though I tell them on connection that I've got 312933.

That host continues to send subsequent blocks 312935..313043 (highest he has, as listed in his version message?). Note the appearance of the additional message "InvalidChainFound: Warning: Displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade." at 312940 et seq.

It then seems to settle into a mode of receiving incoming transactions, most of which it cannot resolve:

Actually, AFAICT, none of these other connections sends any blocks whatsoever - why is that? Does the
Code:
them=0.0.0.0, peer=0.0.0.0

in the send version message mean 'send me blocks', and any other values mean 'don't send me blocks'? Seems kinda wonky.

But to cut to the chase - how do I get a copy of 312934?

Why the hell would Paypal accept Bitcoin? That would put them out of business!

I think you've misread the thread. The idea is not to advocate to PayPal that they accept Bitcoin, it is to advocate to a certain business that they accept Bitcoin rather than PayPal.

But to answer your tangential question - if Bitcoin does what we think it will do over the next several years, than PayPal's only chance for survival would be to accept Bitcoin. For if they are to not adopt Bitcoin, they will surely be put out of business.

Hmm. I seem to be going from bad to worse.

Shut down, restarted Bitcoin-Qt. New error message on dialog: "Warning: displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade."

Shutdown Bitcoin-Qt, shutdown TorBrowser, restarted TorBrowser, restarted Bitcoin-Qt. Same error.

Shutdown Bitcoin-Qt, reverted port=8333 to listen=1, restarted Bitcoin-Qt. Same error.

Shutdown Bitcoin-Qt, mv bitcoin.conf, restarted Bitcoin-Qt. Same error.

Shutdown Bitcoin-Qt, changed settings in GUI to not use proxy, restarted Bitcoin-Qt. Same error.

I'm guessing my database is corrupted? But...

Code:
2014-07-29 23:14:34 No coin database inconsistencies in last 74 blocks (38162 transactions)

Maybe the error is merely because it already knows that it is not caught up with the tip? If so, perhaps the db is OK? Should I just wait it out?

Enjoyed.

I literally lol'd (there's a term I don't use often) at the mention that GreenAddress is 'goxxing-proof'.

Not sure yet if your product is for me, but good luck.

Looks like your using my bitcoin.conf file from here (minus the update I just made):https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=623868.msg6917399#msg6917399

I thought your avatar looked familiar... yes, that's where I grabbed the bitcoin.conf contents.

Can I also assume that all other configuration is the same (besides Armory not being set to start Bitcoind on it own)?

Funny thing there... way back when, I set Armory to autostart bitcoind - but it never did. I still need to run it (well, Bitcoin-Qt) manually.

To answer the question, I guess so.

I am still somewhat confused by the interaction between bitcoin.conf, and the fields in Bitcoin-Qt>Preferences. I had already changed some of those through the GUI. I was puzzled that invoking 'touch bitcoin.conf' at the prompt did not revert all the settings in the GUI to defaults. Yes, I had terminated Bitcoin-Qt before creating the file.

Indeed, after creating a meaningful bitcoin.conf, all the settings are as I last set through the GUI, with the exception of the port 9150.

So the effective settings seem to be some inscrutable combination of GUI settings and bitcoin.conf? Fragile. Well, I probably just don't yet see the obvious relationship between the two.

port=8333 (Listen for connections on port 8333.  This allows Bitcoin Core to talk to Armory on port 8333 while talking to Tor on port 9150.)

None of the options should prevent you from syncin while your connected.  Try restarting your computer and see if that helps.

Hours later, still stuck at the same point. I'll give the above a try.

The manpage (or lack thereof) is kind of weak. The explanations of the options are rather ambiguous. Yeah I know - patch & pull request Smiley

... but I think a lot of companies are run by idiots  lazy people...

Some, but not many. The idiots and lazy people are quickly driven from the marketplace by more worthy competitors.

usually these paypal webservices use it for everything, stock control storing delivery addresses, their whole business revolves around paypal

Fortunately, they have a fully integrated alternative (even more full-featured than PayPal - by a long shot), with integrated Bitcoin payments, in QuickBooks online.

That's not 3% discount.  That's only $10 off if you spend more than $100.  It's not much of a discount if your buying a whole computer or laptop off Newegg.

Hate to break it to you, but you are absolutely, categorically, incorrect:
