Ok, not sure where to post this so for lack of a better place I will put it here for discussion:

KNC is now specifying a MINIMUM of 250 Mh/s for 10K or $40 per 1 Mh/s! Compare that price to performance cost to the Gridseed 5 chip miners (360 Kh/s) and they should be selling for $14.40 each  Shocked

Supposedly KNC is shipping Q2/Q3 2014 but by that time they may increase the hashrate yet again (originally specified at 100 Mh/s about two weeks ago?).
If KNC wasn't a reputable company I would call BS.

I find myself hard pressed to order more Gridseeds at $165/piece  Huh

The option of ssh to check on miners? a link at least i had no luck.

This was posted by someone else...edited for clarity:
Quote
How to use screen:

screen -S ScreenName        #starts a new screen session

"ScreenName" can be anything, it's just a name that you can use later to get back to it. This will give you a new shell. Start cgminer there.
Ctrl-A, then Ctrl-D will exit the new shell and will keep cgminer running.

You can now disconnect/exit SSH etc.
To get back to your cgminer:
screen -r ScreenName

To verify that it's indeed running in the background use this:
ps auxwww | grep cgminer

I have noticed that after you exit cgminer the screen session occasionally does not display new commands. I usually just exit and start a new screen session.

Ya i also tried to get ubunto 13.1 running but i get compiling errors and then the system don't fully work. i be trying it again today. i  would even pay .1 btc for a good guide for a fresh install. the one i found in the other main gridseed discussion thread worked ok until i had compiling errors and did not know what to do.

Install Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS: ubuntu-12.04.4-server-amd64.iso

Update Ubuntu and install git
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install git

Install dependencies, compile then run dtbartle cgminer
Code:
cd ~
sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf automake pkg-config libtool libcurl4-openssl-dev libncurses5-dev libudev-dev
sudo git clone git://github.com/dtbartle/cgminer-gc3355.git
cd cgminer-gc3355
sudo CFLAGS="-O2 -Wall" ./configure --enable-scrypt --enable-gridseed
sudo make

sudo ./cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://xpool.net:8820 -u x -p x --gridseed-options=baud=115200,freq=850,chips=5 --hotplug 0

That is all! Seems so simple but it took a lot of effort to get here.

Useful options
Code:
sudo apt-get install openssh-server	#if not installed during setup
sudo apt-get install screen             #to run cgminer in the background

I'm familiar with virtual com ports and all that from phone flashing.

I was able to get it working on a custom clean installed Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I used the WinUSB and a copy of CGminer.  I could NOT get this thing to work on Usb 3 and on any laptop I had.

Now I can only get two on, the rest are not detected.   Does BAMT with a modified cgminer work for this asic

For me it didn't work connected directly to an USB 3 port but worked on a USB 2 hub connected to a USB 3 port. Not sure what would be an issue with a laptop.

BAMT is a bit of an overkill for this, since it has all that AMD crud installed. But yes, you can compile a modified cgminer version on it and it would work. I don't know if it would help with USB 3 though.

I think it's still a minority that cannot make the Gridseed's work, there has been hundreds of thousands sold, and you see very few people with problems. As for USB3 we all know they only work well on UB2 port and hub

I've had my gridseeds for two weeks now. the first week I was running 20 off a Pi Rasberry with cpuminer and they'd run great for about 8 to 10 hours then they'd just slow down and my pool stats would start off showing them as running at about 7,200 Kh/s and then they'd start to slow down to abut 3,500 Khs and I'd reboot the Pi and they'd run fine again.

I got tired of this after about 5 days so last saturday I put Ubuntu server 13.04 on an old PC I had laying around and downloaded and compiled cgminer for gridseed and for about about 100 hours now and they've been perfect - non stop.

I had the same experience on the Pi with 20 Gridseeds using cgminer. I ended up returning it to the store. Fortunately they gave me a complete refund Smiley

Wow  Roll Eyes

This is my inspiration not Spotswoods:

I'm not selling them as a business...it's a one off exclusive designed for a 19" server rack.

If anything I would say "someone" copied my 19" server rack size design but im not going there: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=259828.msg5499240#msg5499240

iongchun also added an alt coin related fix for DIFF 0 work so I removed my pull request for that, since auto-worker-diff is all inclusive.

Do you have a link to this? I am still using this patch as it seems to be working well: https://github.com/CartmanSPC/p2pool/commit/17ac31aec971237984f7dac457b5eec14e75ffdc

Guys: Someone needs to take the high road.
669  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Gridseed Case Build on: April 01, 2014, 05:04:46 PM
Was going to see if I could have the miners drop down a bit into the lower section to make the top section 2U but in the end it may just have to be 3U.

On that server enclosure it looks like the USB hubs might fit in the front and still have room for the power supply?

672  Economy / Computer hardware / [SOLD] Case for Gridseed miners on: April 01, 2014, 04:33:33 AM
I have one Gridseed case for sale:

It is made out of 80/20 Series 25 aluminum profiles. I am selling it because the bottom shelf does not have enough space to accommodate my Corsair AX1200i. It will easily fit the 12V 360W power supplies that are commonly used with Gridseed miners.

Comes as is. What you see is what you get. The 2 pieces to the right are to hold the accessories (PS/USB hubs) in the bottom part of the case. You will have to make holding brackets for the top part consisting of 8 pieces (16 brackets) and 2 pieces to the right (4 brackets). I was using this (link) and drilling the holes bigger. Alternatively you can use this: Link

I will include 25 bolts and nuts used with the corner brackets to attach the additional pieces. ($16.50 value). You only need 20.

Dimensions
Length (bottom part)  597mm
Length (top part)     600mm
Width                 448mm
Height                157.563mm (132.563mm+25mm)

I paid $157.87 for the raw parts. Make me an offer+shipping.
I can ship it assembled (bottom part except for the two pieces to the right) but I think it may be cheaper if it is shipped unassembled.

BTC/CC/Paypal accepted.
673  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Gridseed Case Build on: March 31, 2014, 10:43:26 PM
Thinking of replacing the top rows of 80/20 with flat aluminum bars. Couple of benefits I can see.

1. Cost
2. Room/Clearance.

Most concerned with clearance. Trying to make the miner section 2U but im not sure if that will be possible.

Going to replace the 25mm extrusions with 20mm extrusions! The 25mm extrusions are just too big. I originally planned to use 20mm extrusions but something went wrong with my head somewhere  Cry

...another $150ish down the hole. Anyone want to buy cut 25mm extrusions cheap? It is completely usable. It's just that the utility shelf does not have enough space to accommodate my Corsair AX1200i.

Comes as is. You will have to make holding brackets for the top part consisting of 8 pieces (16 brackets). I was using this (link) and drilling the holes bigger.

Pictures! This thing turned out really nice. It blows me away how clean the cuts are. The material stops on the miter saw stand are a must for the exact same lengths on each piece.

Still need to make another 16 corner brackets (Shocked) but thought I would post what's done so far.

I hate making these corner braces but it beats paying $146 for them.
676  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Gridseed Case Build on: March 31, 2014, 03:19:49 AM
All the pieces are cut.

Man, that saw blade is good. The cuts have almost a mirror like finish. I am impressed. Wish I would of had this miter saw for my GPU case.

Learned an important word today: Kerf - the width of cut made by a saw or cutting torch

So this first case will be 597mm long instead of 600. The top parts where the miners sit are still going to be 600mm so it will overhang about 1.5mm on each side or 3mm on one side. Basically ran out of material since I didn't accommodate for the width of the cuts when measuring. Thought I had plenty but it turns out I was just short.  Sad

Going to grab some dinner and may be able to do the corner brackets tonight.

Nice summary suchmoon. I have experienced similar results myself with 20 miners and cgminer.

I ditched cpuminer right away. It's just not practical for my needs.

I ditched Windows after only about two hours. The USB support was too glitchy and I did not want to be resetting USB ports when miners dropped off. Windows would have been nice since it would allow me to use cgwatcher but stability if more important.

I ditched the Pi after about six hours...really wanted that thing to work and it mostly did but not as well as Linux on a spare Thinkpad I have. I use Ubuntu server myself since I have no need for a UI.

I have a couple wiibox's that came with my miners that I haven't even touched yet since Linux/cgminer on the Thinkpad is working so well.

Also, I'm in the process of making my own case (link). Hope to have it finished tomorrow. Today was burned having to make a couple of trips to the hardware store and Starbucks  Roll Eyes
Eventually plan to use the second Corsair AX1200i from my GPU rig to power the Gridseed miners. May just cut the modular PCIe cables (since I have extras) and use barrel plug adaptors to a 5 way splitter for Scrypt only mining. Might be able to push 120 miners on it Grin 96 is more realistic though.

w2k ********************** And I 'para-quote'.   Wink

We have decided form now on to give free shipping with all our orders, we want to make it as simple as possible to order from us.

There have been some major developments the last couple of days and well, cannot say much about it but we had to put the price at $165.

Sorry for making you look bad, wish I could tell you everything that is going on right now, I'm sure over the coming days things will become clear.
Kind Regards
Simon

And, this just in, too! And I para-quote again Wink

Hi Wolfey2014
I can explain all in a few days… sorry this was not our choice.
Confusing, we agree.
One plus point is that from now on we will always offer free shipping worldwide.

Simon
www.Hashra.com

This looks like the manufacture forcing them to increase their price to keep other resellers happy or dictating a minimum sale price. We now know that they can be sold for as cheap as $150/unit and still be profitable for the reseller. I'm betting the cost to resellers is now around $135/unit. That gives them a profit margin of just under 23% not taking into consideration operating expenses. Would guess most resellers are pulling in 16-20% margins after operating expenses.

As I said in the link above: "at $165 these miners are about the same price to performance ratio of a 290x not factoring in electricity cost. The electricity savings is what sold me."
