I'd like to see some statistics about distribution of NXT. If 90% is in the hands of the (73) first-stakeholders and only the trading of the remaining 10% is generating the price of NXT, that would be bad in my eyes.

I'd also love to see this.  Can this info be extracted from the blockchain?

Of course, everything is in the block chain.

Do the original stakeholders keep their Nxt in 73 accounts?  If so, do we know which accounts?

As I posted earlier:

Anyone can send some NXT to me so I can get started ?

Thanks

10 NXT sent, went through very quickly.  As did similar 10 NXT donations from me to three people over on the Raspberry Pi forum who are running nodes now.

Pi lovers, whats about ODROID-U3 Community Edition? 2GB RAM, XUbuntu 13.10

That's a nice little machine, but it is limited to one per customer and doesn't ship until Mid Jan.  Raspberry Pi Model Bs cost $25 less each, and Newark / Element 14 has 27,000 of them sitting in a warehouse ready to get shipped out the day after somebody places an order.

Somebody is really pissed off by NXT now - both my sites bombarded constantly and admin email receiving hundreds of registration confirmations from various forums mostly in Russia.

They are attempting to deny the service from you - their success will be temporary.

Quark, I'm willing to bet.  I came to NXT after achieving disillusionment at QRK.  It is a Russian cryptocoin, tho they have many layers hiding that fact from the general public.

nice to see this growing more and more!!!

1000+ active peers here!  I wonder how many are Raspberry Pi.

At least one.  Here's a post from their website:

I'm curious about these crypto currencies, and I decided to install NXT on a fresh installed raspberryPi. I can leave it running as long as it does not create any problem on my network and internet connection.

I followed your simplified installation guide, browsed to http://192.168.0.x:7874, unlock the account with a big passphrase.
I see blocks, peers, transactions,...

Now, how can I check it is actually working correctly? Should I give your my nxt key?

Once you get an installation of NXT running on a raspberry pi and have it running quietly in the background on your corner of the internet, post your numeric only account number here on this forum and somebody will send you 10 NXT coins. This account number is in the upper left of your browser window, beside the unlocked padlock icon. Once your coins are processed by the network you have joined, you will see them in the upper right corner of the browser window. Happy NXTing!

ok this thread is so clogged, lets leave the dream girls out.

I'm going to ask again if people running VPS could start sharing their experiences with different hosts they use, so we can find more and more.

This brings up something I think is very important.  We need to establish a dashboard someplace off this thread where we can see facts and statistics that are accumulating or changing.   How many nodes are there?  How many sites?   What is the current DDos level?   Etc etc etc...

Inquiring minds want to know.  This is an interesting cyberwar to be following, we need a newsroom instead of just an endless blizzard of trench warfare reporter dispatches.

get on it rickyjames.. I for one am busy setting up VPS, looking after my daughter and watching Arsenal hammer the Hammers oh and trying to build this litecoin mining rig, ha forgot about that

Sorry, I'm Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes and I'm dating myself with that reference for the people that even get it.  My website skills are non-existent.  I defer to somebody that knows what they're doing.

NXT nodes are needed to make NXT strong.  Those nodes are only going to be stood up by people motivated to do so.  I repeat my contention that forging does not seen to be a strong motivator for setting up NXT nodes when examined closely.  This could be a problem.   This forum exists to address to problems.

How much NXT you earn from forging depends on transaction volume. NXT users is still a small pool of individuals and transaction volume is low. Transaction volume will increase exponentially as we have seen with Bitcoin which will increase forging profits dramatically.

I guess this situation is like when Bitcoin first launched many years ago... what motivation was there to mine?

Transaction volume or exponential increases in it don't alter the bottom line at all.  They only define the timeline you see in getting there.

A 1000 NXT forging stake will earn you 0.0001% of all transaction fees, which is identical to saying you get 1 transaction fee NXT for every 1,000,000 generated by the system.  You will double your 1000 NXT stake after 1,000,000,000 NXT have been generated in transaction fees.  How long it takes to generate a billion NXT in transaction fees depends on the average size of all NXT transactions.   For every thousand NXT in the average transaction size, a trillion NXTs must change hands for you to double your 1000 NXT forging stake.

Math is math and facts is facts. What's your numbers, or what's wrong with mine?

I repeat my contention: I believe it will be low cost of many, many Raspberry Pis and not the high motivation of many, many forgers that will ultimately make the NXT network a viable one.

Is it worth to run a node with around 1000 Nxt? Will I be able to forge anything thats worth it?

Yes, u'll be earning 0.0001% of all fees.

Another way of saying this is that if you run a forging node with 1000 NXT, you will earn only 1 NXT for every 1 million NXTs that are charged as fees.  Thus you will "double" your 1000 NXT initial forging stake only when THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF AVAILABLE NXT has cycled through once not as transactions, but FEES.

Maybe it's just me, but I gotta say that forging does not seem to be a very good motivation for running a node.

Yep, you should just buy $1000s of dollars of specialized equipment that can never be used for anything else and consumes a ton of power and mine bitcoins.

Ha ha ha.  Here's some reading material for you:

Me going out and buying Bitcoin ASICs as you suggest does not address the problem I identify.  Keep thinking, maybe you can come up with a better idea.

This was sort of tounge-in-cheek. One could easily create a NXT pool similar to other currencies. Everyone pools their NXT together into one account to increase what they could forage alone. Requires extreme trust in the pool operator however.

Interesting idea.  However, I believe it will be low cost of many, many Raspberry Pis and not the high motivation of many, many forgers that will ultimately make the NXT network a viable one.

Unless there is some serious dumping by top-tier genesis block foundersto keep prices down, the amount in wide circulation is going to get choked off at a  very small percentage of the total because it's just to expensive to buy.

Don't worry about distribution.

In January real (10-100x bigger) DDoS and other types of attacks will start when hackers read the source code, many stakeholders will lose some or all faith and will sell a lot of their coins.

Exactly.  And in so doing, lose a lot of money they invested at an exchange early on, while only releasing the small proportion of coins that were sold to them earlier by initial founders. This is my definition of "a bumpy ride".

Meanwhile, the founders have no financial incentive to sell during a price decline like the one you describe.   They can "afford" to ride NXT all the way back down to zero at an exchange and lose at most 1 BTC in real money out of pocket while waiting out any price decline.  They have effectively zero risk here no matter what happens.

Unless they now think of themselves as becoming rich in the last 90 days, and a need to get their new-found but unrealized wealth out of the market while they still can....

For them, "that's a bumpy ride", too....

The top founder got 17% of all coins (170M).

These were unclaimed coins. 90% r claimed already and were sent to their legit owners. More info - http://nxtgenesisblock.appspot.com/

My original post modded to reflect this, thx.
675  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 26, 2013, 09:56:21 AM
So, let me get this straight

1,000,000,000 (1 billion) initial coins
73 initial adopters
so roughly 13.7 Million each (assume equal distribution)
at 21 BTC Total
0.000000021 BTC per coin
current market rate is about 0.00008500

So, it’s that’s about 4,000x, or 400,000% more what the early adopters paid for? And it has only been a month? Are you serious? 400,000% returns? Now, this sounds too good to be true.

Am I missing something? So, at the only exchange trading Nxt, us regular folks have to pay 400,000% more than what early adopters paid for? Too bad fools can't do simple math. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Just for the record, actual genesis block NXT distribution was far from a 13.7 million coin average per founder.  It was very skewed.  The top block of 17% of all coins (170M) were unclaimed and later redistributed per http://nxtgenesisblock.appspot.com/ .  Apparently only eight paid the maximum 1 BTC during the initial NXT buy-in period.  They hold almost half (40%) of all NXT - that's right at 400M.

And yes, I understand everybody had their chance to kick in 1 BTC during the announced initial buy-in period, and didn't, and so missed the boat.  NXT did indeed have a more fair distribution system than most altcoins.  That doesn't mean the situation today is ideal - far from it.

IMHO, distribution of this coin to create a functional economy with true, smooth cash flow is the number one challenge this coin faces, far bigger than any zombie attack.

Distribution of this coin into the "economy" solely via sales at an exchange is going to be a very bumpy ride.   NXT prices are moving at hyper warp speed, currently way too fast for its own good.  Unless there is some serious dumping by top-tier genesis block founders to keep prices down, the amount in wide circulation is going to get choked off at a  very small percentage of the total because it's just to expensive to buy.   I'm no economist, and I'd love to hear from somebody who is, but I read a lot of zerohedge.com and the NXT currency distribution situation is truly scary to me.

But it's gonna be interesting to watch, that's for sure.

I would really like to hear from other people who tried NXT on their Pi. What are the optimal settings, what can be tweaked performance-wise etc

There have been quite a few downloads of my all-in-one package, so there should be multiple tests going on.

I am working on it but it will be  few hours before I can report.

Also this place has FREE Rasp-Pi co-location in Austria: http://www.edis.at/en/server/colocation/austria/raspberrypi/

I am living in Vienna. Let me know if I can do anything.

Linux Journal had a nice article about this Austrian Raspberry Pi colocation site:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/raspberry-strudel-my-raspberry-pi-austria

There's another one in AUSTRALIA, (not Austria):

Yeah, just wait until Max Keiser and Bill Still start reporting about NXT.

Will they?
Sure, at some point and time

This is a Quark inside joke, video from these two guys is responsible for at least 90% of QRK market cap.

rickyjames do you want to post your findings on there?

Sure, I'll post some thoughts over there.  I was a member at the raspberrypi.org forum from day one.  And I always have something to say.   Smiley

OK, just for the record, below are the two postings I have made in Ola's forum post at the Raspberry Pi forum, which was approved for publication by a totally bewildered mod that couldn't figure out if it was a joke, spam, or cry for help: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=64229&p=474419#p474419

"This is a long story, bear with me a second. The people that wandered in above [Ola and landomata] asking for help are in the middle of a war, fighting for something they care about very much (and I do too), so they are sleep deprived and a little shell shocked and perhaps sound a little crazed. Before I go on with a few paragraphs of background below in my next post, here's what any responding Raspberry Pi owner is being asked to do, posted as a dispatch from the middle of the struggle:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic ... msg4140793"

AND

"OK, background to all of this.

Maybe you've heard of Bitcoin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin) in the news lately, maybe not. It's a new kind of digital money that was started five years ago that has grown into a billion-dollar business today. It depends on volunteers running computers in the background (for a Bitcoin profit) to solve increasingly harder cryptographic puzzles that secure the holdings of its (explosively) growing user base. Although Bitcoin is reasonably healthy today, it is a distinct possibility that in the next few years it will fail as the scaling of the background computers becomes too much to sustain. In the meantime, since the original bitcoin source code is public domain, there have been 50-75 "me-too" competitors to Bitcoin that have popped up. They tweak relatively minor aspects of the Bitcoin code to claim an advantage, but bottom-line they all share the same "need-ever-more-computers-to-solve-harder-crypto-puzzles (Proof-of-Work or PoW)" feature / flaw of the original Bitcoin.

NXT (pronounced "next") is a proposed alternative to Bitcoin. It has been written from the ground up in Java by a huge and growing group of developers (read about them here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.0 and here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.0 ) and uses the end-user wallet software in a peer-to-peer network to secure the transactions, not a separate class of "miner" computers running separately in the background. It also has many new features that Bitcoin lacks. Many people, me included, think it is the future of digital money and the logical successor to Bitcoin. It is currently in beta test among limited users and is to be publically released on January 3, 2014 - the 5th anniversary of the Bitcoin launch.

There's multi-millions of real dollars at stake here, and Bitcoin is not going to give up the throne without a fight. To that end, the ongoing beta test of NXT has been sabotaged by an unknown assailant launching a DDoS attack against NXT and trying to spoil its rollout next week. This attack floods the internet with junk packets aimed at the (currently relatively few) computers running the NXT software, swamping them and causing fatal loss of communication in the NXT network. If only there were LOTS more computers that could quickly be added to the NXT network and keep it going...

That's where the Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi users come in. The NXT developers have come up with a tweaked package of their software that will run on a Raspberry Pi. If you run this software, load the resulting wallet with 1 to 10 NXT coins, and leave the Raspberry Pi running and hooked up to the internet, then you have helped the NXT network grow stronger. Thank you.

What's in it for you? Getting in on the ground floor of a new digital currency that may well become as big as Bitcoin, a lot faster than Bitcoin did. Maybe you read this story: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... -oslo-home . There's no guarantee that will ever happen again, but it might. As an initial investor in NXT, you can get some initial free coins to run in your Raspberry Pi NXT wallet from many sources (https://nextcoin.org/index.php/board,29.0.html) and even buy significantly more if you choose from official exchanges like dgex.com. However, at this stage you should view NXT as nothing more that a SPECULATIVE INVESTMENT; don't risk money you can't afford to lose!

NXT is a deep subject and this is a very brief overview. But if you investigate it and decide to help by turning your Raspberry Pi into a NXT node for a few weeks through the January 3 launch, you would be getting the appreciation of many fine people. And possibly helping to create the future."

Hope this helps.

Standalone package for the Raspberry Pi:

I've put together a package with the current version of the NXT server and the Embedded Version of Oracle JRE that you can run on your Raspberry Pi as-is. You can get it from my public node server.

Cross-posting this to the Raspberry Pi forums now.
