661  Economy / Economics / Re: I need someone to give me Econ 101 - Why is mild inflation needed ? on: July 02, 2014, 05:28:35 AM
Eco 101:

Let say, the whole amount of currency (which plays the money function) is a 100, and the whole amount of goods/services which can be bought/sold by that currency is also 100.
If the government - issuer of the currency - prints (QE by FED), for example, another 10 units of currency that year, the amount of goods/services is still 100.
Now, we have 110 currency for 100 wares. This will generate an increase of prices equals to the increase of new currency in the rotation, ~ 10%.
So, no, inflationary policy will not make people to spend more and increase the consumption, create new jobs, since the resources/labor/capital in the REAL PHYSICAL world did not have changed, we only had more colorful paper. Yes, by numerical count, people spent more, because prices went up, but the sum of the goods did not rise.

I think this is too simplistic.  Consumer psychology does matter.  Have you ever driven by a string of gas stations, seen that one of them has raised their price by 30 cents (which, from experience, indicates that the rest will likely be higher soon, too), and then stopped at the next station with the cheaper price to fill up?  I've certainly done that.

Also, remember that inflation and deflation generally affect wages as well as prices.  If we're in a deflationary environment, on average, I can expect to be paid less next year than this year (which could also come in the form of losing my job).  If I believe that to be the case, I'm going to save money as much as I can--only buy the essentials, etc.  If everyone does that, the economy will tank.
662  Economy / Economics / Re: I need someone to give me Econ 101 - Why is mild inflation needed ? on: July 02, 2014, 05:09:57 AM

In a normal economy, it's pretty much impossible to have no inflation or deflation, unless you're constantly mucking with the currency supply for that economy.  So that basically leaves you with a choice between inflation, which theoretically leads to an upward spiral in prices and spending (if xyz is going to cost more tomorrow, I should buy it today while it's cheaper), or deflation, which leads to a downward spiral in prices and spending (if xyz is going to cost less tomorrow, I'll wait until later to buy it).  A little deflation now and then can be ok, but it's easy for it to get out of control.

people will buy things when they need it, which is much better because it prevents buying for 'wants' and encourages buying for 'needs'

which is much better for the environment in the end, and it might reduce greed.

A consumption driven society like we have now is very bad for many reasons. Ever heard of planned obsolescence? That certainly won't happen in an deflationary system.

Inflation encourages wasteful behavior.

I don't disagree that inflation may lead to wasteful behavior and feeds the whole instant gratification mentality.  But what's a better alternative?  Out-of-control deflation (which is often what happens with deflation) leads to depressions--market crashes, very high unemployment, etc.
663  Economy / Economics / Re: I need someone to give me Econ 101 - Why is mild inflation needed ? on: July 01, 2014, 04:55:54 PM
Inflation is a form of subjugation -- a way to ensure that the poor remain poor. The poor keep most of their wealth in the form of currency, and that wealth is destroyed by inflation. The wealthy keep most of their wealth in assets, and are not affected by inflation.

It is no surprise that the bankers running the Fed say that inflation is necessary. Who are benefiting the most from inflation right now? Owners of real estate and corporations. Everyone else has to suffer from rising food and energy prices and watch their bank accounts lose value.

I think subjugation is a broader issue.  It doesn't matter whether you have inflation or deflation.  The rich will use either to their advantage.  In a deflationary scenario, the poor will still remain poor and will probably get poorer because, as a whole, they're the first ones to lose their jobs.

665  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What do you want from your Altcoin ? on: July 01, 2014, 04:18:39 PM
Is there on this forum a board for topics about new ideas and suggestions to be implemented in new cryptocurrencies?

I think that ideal altcoin algorithm should provide fair distribution of coins between wallets. I mean internal taxes and comissions which will lead the capital to be more distributed. In long terms it will lower volatility and higher whole capitallisation of this altcoin market. The more capital is distributed the more active trading and using of altcoin happens.

This has been tried in at least a couple ways.  See FairCoin (FAC) and Minerals (MIN) for a couple examples.
666  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What do you want from your Altcoin ? on: July 01, 2014, 03:33:26 PM
What do you mean by success?  The potential to make a lot of money off of it?  Everyone knows about it?  It makes a significant contribution to the area of cryptocurrencies?  It lasts for months?  Years?  Any of the above?  All of the above?  The answer may be different depending on how you define success.

Which coins would you consider to be successes so far?

If the dev can sort out the items he's working on shortly and people keep promoting the coin it could make a bit of a comeback. If you are really interested in its future get onto the exchanges and buy some more - someone just bought 60m SPN on C-cex at 0.00000003 Litecoin (I wonder who that was?  Wink) Keep the coin in the public's eye by tweeting or posting to facebook updates by the dev. There are ppl out there looking to pump coins like this, they just need a reason.

Another certain someone may have cleaned out all the available SPN on europex that were going for 3 Litoshis each. Wink  If any of these things that the dev is working on pan out, man is that going to be an incredible investment.

Could we update the ANN page and add the chickenstrips pool please

This should really be added asap.
New miners looking to collect some coins will most probably go elsewhere once they discover the listed pools aren't working.
Considering that we are still a fairly non-desirable coin we need all the help we can get..!  Wink

It looks like spn.hashing.at is working again.  I probably won't mine with them anymore since it took them forever to fix their issues, but I did eventually get the coins I was owed.

Also, it looks like spn.hashfever.com no longer exists.

And thanks to the chickenstrips owner--that pool has been working very well.

All the rage right now is the anon feature. All coins with this feature seem to rocket at the moment. We need something original or at least a feature that people want and is sought after in today's market. We need to stand out as not being like most other coins. Any thoughts?

I think the first question you need to ask is what are you trying to accomplish?  If you're looking for a short term pop in the price, then you could probably add a feature or two like anonymity, and you might get that.  If you're trying to create a coin that has value and will stand the test of time, then you need to create something that either competes with or complements bitcoin.

Obviously, there are many technical ways to improve upon bitcoin.  Although I don't care much about it myself, anonymity has been popular lately, as you said.

I think very fast transactions are important.  I think it would be very beneficial if we could figure out a way to get a confirmation within a few seconds like with credit cards.  The tricky thing here is that block times of less than 30 seconds don't work very well.

I think ASIC resistance is important.  Otherwise you end up with centralization and exclude the little guys from mining (note that I'm biased here as I'm one of the little guys), which is one of the things that draws some people, like myself, into cryptocurrencies--it's a lot of fun.

I think it's important to have some kind of mechanism that ensures your coins go where you intend.  I'm always concerned that I'll send my coins into oblivion.  Maybe some kind of pre-confirmation system could be implemented as an option for transactions.  You set up a transaction in your wallet which contacts the destination wallet, letting it know you're about to send coins.  The owner of the destination wallet could let you know that you're successfully connecting with it, at which point you could safely send your coins.  For example, if you're sending to an exchange, when you set up the transaction, the exchange could let you know you have the right address via their website.

I like the idea of improving Spartan Coin, but, unfortunately, I'm guessing that these things would take a lot of time and effort to add.

And you will see more buying on c-cex.... I have quite a few people I work with that will be snatching them up , since I explained the ROI possible. That is an extremely low and measurable investment. Once we have the tools out that price will not be available.

I am holding my 6 million Spartans since IPO not sold one..How do i sync my wallet though it was stuck I reinstalled my computer and and backed up my wallet.dat do i just download new latest wallet will it sync then? Smiley

Along with the latest wallet, you may need to add a spartancoin.conf file.  This is what I have in mine, which allows me to sync just fine:

rpcuser=<your rpcuser name>
rpcpassword=<your rpcpassword>
rpcport=55883
maxconnection=100
server=1

addnode=54.186.126.94
addnode=54.186.242.36
addnode=54.186.245.111

I'm not great with .conf files, so some of those lines may be superfluous, but those should at least work.  They also allow me to solo-mine if I so choose.
671  Economy / Economics / Re: Silkroad seized bitcoins to impact price? on: June 13, 2014, 08:39:04 PM
Psychology coupled with market technicals seem to be missing from the discussion here, so I think I'll add them. Smiley

The recent rally from $450 was starting to get stale.  We had two very strong moves upward to about $690, and then the price just kind of dropped to the $625-$675 range and stayed there a while--probably too long, as it turns out.  My general feeling was that the market was waiting for an excuse to sell off.  This is part of how auction markets work.  They never move in a straight line.  They go a ways, pull back, and continue on.

Think about the psychology behind this.  If you bought in at $450 and you're sitting there at $650 with a nice $200/BTC profit, and it doesn't break out to the upside, and then it still doesn't break out to the upside, how are you going to feel?  You'd probably start to get nervous because you don't want to give back part or all of your profit.  But you also don't want to miss out on more profit if it does eventually continue up.  So you wait it out, looking for a reason to either sell or stay in your position.  A potentially negative piece of news hits (the auction announcement), so you sell to lock in your profit, figuring the price will drop and you can buy back in lower (if you want to continue to trade).

In the short term, the market simply ran out of buyers around $650, and it looked like the auction news was a reason for some people to sell.  Whether or not the auction will actually affect the price after the auction is irrelevant.  We had reached a point of buying exhaustion and needed to pull back.

what's up with http://spn.hashing.at, last block found 15 hours ago, pll are leaving pool.

I was curious about that, too.  I'm guessing it's a front end issue.  cgminer said I found a block when mining for the pool several hours ago, and the SPN block explorer shows that the pool's wallet is receiving coins for mined blocks.

That's because there are 400M at 1sat...  Roll Eyes
Who would buy any coin having a giant sell wall at 1sat. It just look like that everybody want to get the hell out of this coin  Grin
(sorry but that doesn't bring any confidence in the coin)
So unless some of you remove a least a couple of 100 millions (say 370millions  Roll Eyes ) at 1sat, this coin will never sell.

People here don't seem to want to admit it, but the coin needs to be listed against ltc. Even with the coin count being reduced, it still should be in the ltc markets. No shame in it, and longterm the coin can still be worth a decent amount.

If it does eventually get onto MP, and they offer ltc or nothing, take the ltc market and run. Really you guys should be pushing for a polo/ltc market right now.

First, c-cex allows you to trade SPN for 90-something other currencies, including LTC, so you already can.  The markets on c-cex are very thin, though, so it doesn't matter much.

Second, I think it could really hurt the coin's long-term chances to trade it against LTC right now.  I'll explain why later when I have more time.

As I was saying, I think pairing SPN with LTC (or any cryptocurrency worth significantly less than BTC) on a major exchange with a lot of volume would endanger the coin by potentially pushing it into a death spiral.  LTC is currently trading around 0.017 BTC/LTC, which means 1 Litoshi (0.00000001 LTC) is worth about 1/58 of a Satoshi.  As there is much more SPN supply right now, the price per coin would certainly drop below 1 Satoshi each, possibly as low as 1/58 of a Satoshi.  If the price drops too low, people will give up on the coin, especially miners, as they would have to mine millions of coins a day to get the same return as on other coins.  If enough people give up on SPN, it won't matter if the dev does something awesome because no one will be left around to see it, and it will die.  First, some value needs to be added to SPN, which is what SpartanCoin is working hard on right now.  Then people will be interested in the coin, thus increasing the demand and hopefully the price.
674  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpartanCoin - Cryptocoin for the competitive world. on: June 07, 2014, 06:32:01 AM
You mean there's more supply than demand?
Is that because people who sell or have Bittrex own a stock. If Bittrex itself has a stock, can we buy it empty?

Yes, there's more supply than demand right now.  Just like the stock market, all crytpocurrency markets are auction markets that operate on simple supply and demand.  Atm, there are billions of Spartan coins out there, and not many people who want to buy them--they need a reason.  If the devs are able to do some great things with SPN, then demand will rise and the price likely will, too.

No buyers on c-cex @ 1 sat. sigh...

You mean there are no standing orders to buy.  10M SPN were bought yesterday, and 20M were bought earlier today.  Demand just hasn't caught up with supply yet.
677  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpartanCoin - Cryptocoin for the competitive world. on: June 02, 2014, 06:03:59 PM
what is the plan at this moment for this coin?
is there a multipool?

bought 35 mil coins @ 2014-05-10 but after that not much trading at c-cex
still 1 satoshi.

Thanks and keep up the good work

I just noticed that someone bought ~16M today on c-cex.

Yes, would kindly appreciate an update with the coin please.
I have been in from the start with spartan coin and invested a lot of mining power/time into it.

When's the POS going to start and also any news on if/when the total supply may be halved etc.

Hopefully with Spartan coin getting closer to the top spot on Mintpal, things will start hotting up a bit.  Smiley
