Yeah thats a problem but also an opportunity because price is low because of it. I want to know when we can expect to have the app live

I can't say when the android app will be live but I expect sometime in September. Two of us are working on it and I'll update when we have something substantial to show. Cheers.
Sounds like this year's fall will be fun and exciting with the new GEO app!

I've been mining on https://geo.suprnova.cc/ for quite a while.  Not necessarily the most popular, but it has been reliable for mining GEO

I think the website/app could use some links to the physical GeoCoins bouncing around the geocaches worldwide.  It could help people locate them nearby and continue them on their journey.

Here's a few of the maps for the current 4 I've gotten out there (Edit: Geocaching.com Login Required)

I'll try and get a few more out soon

Hi everyone,

I've been away from GEO developments for a few months, however weifa (GIS developer) has been working on GEO, creating physical geocoins for promoting GEO to geocachers on geocaching.com and more to come. Check this one out: https://twitter.com/BackroadDave/status/750917610032672768

I'm back developing an easy to use, simple android app for GEO. Stay tuned for updates & thanks for the continued support.
Welcome back Tobler!  I think the android app for GEO could be a major benefit to the project, let me know how I can assist you in development.

I want to help out GeoCoin. Like I said earlier I'm working on a Geo-location mapping cell phone DApp so the code could easily be re-used. The problem is why would I help GeoCoin? I barely have any $GEO. I would be doing unpaid work to make other people rich. Is there any way people could come together and raise me some $GEO?

It seems like the 100% premined tokens are doing a lot better than these PoW mined coins.

This coin is a pretty small mcap of like $100,000. If people had their coins diluted 50% to pay for development and then price went to $10,000,000, that would be 50x profit.

We have to think serious. Tobbler obviously isn't very active anymore. He might be working on stuff in the background or he might have gone broke. This has happened with many other coins where the coin creator ends up going broke and is forced to give up. It's pretty expensive to run servers that can support blockchains.

how many geos do you demand? I know that trust is faulty but I think you are a good guy and I would be basically interested.

Greetings

5000 $GEO would be a good start. I'll post the DApp on here one day and see what people think. Then I'll ask for donations. I would rather work that way so people don't get mad if they don't like the product or it takes a long time to build.

I also don't think it's fair that some people donate while others don't. If people like the work I would rather see development coins added into the next hardfork when this coin has to switch to a more scalable blockchain. Donations will work until then.

I like the idea of having a GEO app and have wanted to help make one for a long time, I just don't necessarily have the programming expertise to create it.  I'd be willing to contribute towards an app being developed Smiley

I guess there's not a lot of trust these days in the crypto realm.  I don't see how any GEO investors would consider they have been scammed.

A lot of altcoins get pumped and dumped the first time they hit an exchange.  GEO still has the premine untouched and price has been relatively stable over multiple years.

I will continue to support the GEO project and contribute where I can.  Smiley

...

This is true. We need a way to get Tobbler to come back. The premine was ridiculously small. The miners get too many coins. Do you think Tobbler would come back if we turned PoS and gave 50% of block reward to a dev fuynd and 50% to miners?

Also HTML5 is weak. We need an android App.

A major step in crypto is the decentralization of economies, including development. A coin should not depend on a single dev, nor should a part of the coin's economy be reserved for a specific person. If you are going to change something about the coin it should be done in a sustainable way.

This particular coin, unlike most, actually offers something interesting and should be survivable on its own, through the work of people who own the coin and offer bounties. Tobler was active a few months ago and probably follows the coin. Making a bounty fund, or asking people to commit a certain amount to work by him specifically is fine but changing the coin to funnel money to devs is not a good idea.

Some questions still remain. For example is the premine distributed or spent? There isn't a block explorer so somebody who knows how to monkey with the blockchain would need to search it I guess. Is the code open source? I vaguely remember early discussions on that issue and don't remember which way it went.

Premine is all intact  Smiley

The physical GeoCoins have started bouncing around the geocaching.com community.  Check out some of these links to see where they are hiding

I've also mailed a few trackable GeoCoins to some friends here in our GEO community who live in Europe, to help spread them around!

The reason I'm here today is because I need a GIS question answered by the experts here. I need map data.
Where's the best open source map data?
I'm familiar with sqllite. Something like that would be useful for creating Geo Go. I can probably work with any map data, sqllite isn't required.

For now the map data should probably be extremely basic. Think something like minecraft map data but for the real Earth. Fancy stuff can come later on.

The best source of open source map data I can recommend is OpenStreetMap!  I found a blog that offers derived OSM datasets, you are likely looking for the Land Polygons dataset.

http://openstreetmapdata.com/data

The most important thing to consider is what map projection you are planning on using.  Those listed as WGS84 will be using lat/long as the units, whereas the others listed as Mercator are using the Web Mercator projection perfect for building your own Google Maps, OSM map or any other major online mapping company (Bing, Yahoo, Apple etc.)  All the files on this blog are available as shapefiles.  If you need some GIS software for viewing these shapefiles, I highly recommend you use the latest version of Quantum GIS (QGIS) which can be found at http://qgis.org/en/site/

Just wanted to add that if you're looking for a minecraft style, you can check out this plugin for photoshop.  A colleague of mine referred it to me and it looks pretty cool.  http://www.3d-map-generator.com/

the coins were at the middle of a walking only bridge. i got there on foot Smiley and no matter what the tech is, the basics of this coin don't function. no working wallet/blockchain etc. or if it is working the info is not here for me to read. i wonder how the transactions are even taking place. i'm looking to get out of my position on polo. will be back if problems get fixed.

If your wallet isn't connecting to the source try adding some nodes.  Help > Debug window. Then enter these commands one at a time

addnode geo.suprnova.cc add
addnode 198.27.81.25:9748 add
addnode 37.187.27.4:9748 add
addnode 54.89.21.44:9748 add
addnode 212.129.1.77:9748 add

My wallet says 5 active connections and is up-to-date, hope that helps

I have a road trip this weekend, I'll try and spread some more GeoCoins around if I have time for Geocaching  Smiley
Didn't get to any geocaches during my road trip, but I did just place another trackable GeoCasher GeoCoin in Riverfront Park, Coquitlam BC.  https://twitter.com/BackroadDave/status/741044763256754177

GEO Update

We've created GEO branded Geocoins for a promotion with geocaching.com. These Geocoins are trackable on geocaching.com where you can view their travel map. Here's the first one that's been placed into circulation: https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=6872337 Track these geocoins as they travel through the millions of geocaches worldwide!

Great news dev!!!
Time to buy more GEO before the moon  Wink
+40% on POLO  Shocked

EPIC!!! These are so cool! I need one as an original collector's item. How rare are these?
There are currently 100 of these trackable GeoCoins
