661  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New to staking - is this worth it? on: July 06, 2022, 10:57:29 AM
Right so I have just bought more VRA so I now have 36500 total (£150 investment).

After the withdrawal fee from Kucoin I will have 35000 to stake.

18.25% is the staking reward and there is no lock up period, I just have to wait 72 hours until I have access to my funds.

Can someone please confirm I have worked this out correctly ..

35000 VRA staked @ 18.25% = 6387.5 VRA per year (122.5 VRA per week).

If i have the above correct then I will get back my Kucoin withdrawal fee in 12 weeks which doesn't sound too bad.

Is this worth doing?
Yes, the calculation you've got is correct. If you're satisfied with that return for that token, then you let it stake there and just take your profits afterward. But, the thing in staking is despite the percentage for your return, the value of that token might go lower or higher. So that's the pros and cons that you have to take before doing it, lucky if the value goes higher.

18% return feels also a bit like the too good to be true story…
On mycointainer.com, they've got a few assets that are higher than 18%. And for other platforms, like pancakeswap, they've got assets for staking that are actually more than 18% APY and can reach more than 100+%.

We are in a bear market, yes prices will fall lower then they currently are but in the longer term they will rise so its good time to stake now no?

With this crypto for example, their all time high is £0.06 and the price I bought at was £0.004. So to get back to all time high, which I think it will and more, i will 15x my investment.

I am still 50/50 if I should stake as I read there is also a withdrawal fee when unstaking so sounds like a lot of fees to me, for now I am just holding.

I have so far invested £4,500 and my portfolio is down 45%. I have not sold any of my positions and have kept buying at these low prices with the intention of holding until the bull market comes and I can cash out some nice profits.
I am quite surprised that you started just in February and you did not panic or sell when the plunge/crash began, it is a very good choice, but not one that newcomer investors take quite often, many newbie investors are into the get rich quick reverie, and thus they can't handle a plunge/correction phase, either they sell or they fall seriously sick over the dump. It is pretty much good you did not of that, considering the fact you have also invested a large sum of money, at least to me. Bear periods are pretty much a favorable time to accumulate more Bitcoins, but sadly quite a lot of people are always too scared to capitalize on the opportunity.

Before I started in February I did a lot of research and watched a lot of videos and one thing I learnt quickly was you only lose when you sell. Yes I may have to hold for another year or two and my portfolio may go down to 60% loss but what is the point of selling, just hold.

I have heard Bitcoin predictions from £250k -£1m by 2030 so lets say £500k is realistic, we will all be well in profit if we accumulate now at these low prices and hold.
663  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which hardware wallet to buy? on: July 05, 2022, 07:53:57 PM
Is there anything I can do until it arrives or do I just wait?
You could download and install Ledger Live, so it is read to go once your hardware wallet arrives: https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live

My cryptos are the following, have read each one will require different appa? If anyone can give me an idea which apps I will need for each one?
If it is a token, then you'll need the app of the coin it is based on (so ERC20 tokens will use the Ethereum app). Coins like Bitcoin will have their own app.

You can type each one in here, and then click on "More details": https://www.ledger.com/supported-crypto-assets

ThanksI will have a look, this is all new to me but will take it one step at a time.

I am going to order it later today as I have come across quite a few detailed videos on youtube showing how to set up, seems pretty straightfoward.
Be very careful following YouTube tutorials. I'm sure many of them will be just fine, but there will certainly be a few malicious ones thrown in which encourage you to enter your seed phrase on a fake website or something similar. It is fairly trivial for scammers to generate thousands of fake views and fake comments on their videos to make them look legit.

Make sure that everything you do is part of the guide I linked above, make sure you only download software form the official Ledger website, don't enter your seed phrase anywhere except on the hardware device itself, and don't follow any links in YouTube video descriptions.

Thanks again.

Yes I can imagine there being a few scammers out there, I will be really careful.

I think I am going to go for it having had a look at their requirements there is no locked period which is pretty good.
the locked period is not the only thing you have to consider there are other things for example the 3rd party where you stake the coin is hacked then you will also lose your coins, why force yourself to stake the coin keeping it private is much safer where you have it control

I have read it is pretty safe staking with their official wallet.

I either stake it with their wallet or leave it on Kucoin and who knows if there is a problem with Kucoin in the future?

It is starting to feel like holding your crypto anywhere but a hardware wallet is not safe at all.

I have the majority of my crypto on Coinbase with a couple on Crypto.com - is it pretty straight forward to get these off of these exchanges and onto the Nano S Plus?
Yes.

Once you have your device, simply follow the set up guide I linked you to before: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4416927988625-Set-up-your-Ledger-Nano-S-Plus. This will involve booting the device up, setting a PIN code, writing down your seed phrase back up, and then connecting it with Ledger Live to update to the latest firmware and install the software for the coins you are interested in.

Once you've done all that, then you can open the relevant coin - bitcoin, for example - and generate a receiving address.* Head over to Coinbase, look for the option to withdraw or send bitcoin to an address, and copy in your receiving address from your Ledger (double check everything, especially that you have copy/pasted the address accurately!) This will send your bitcoin from the exchange across to your hardware wallet.

The very first time you do this, lots of people like to send a small "test" transaction of a few bucks worth of bitcoin to make sure they have done everything properly before sending across their full balance.

*At this point, some people like to reset their device to factory settings, and then recover from their seed phrase back up they've just created, and ensure they generate the exact same address. This allows you to be doubly sure that you correctly copied the seed phrase without making any mistakes.

Thanks. I am going to order it later today as I have come across quite a few detailed videos on youtube showing how to set up, seems pretty straightfoward.

And yes I will do a small test transaction first to make sure I have done everything correctly.

Right, have been looking more at Legder Nano S plus and it accepts 7 of the 11 crypto I hold so its worth getting.

I am a total newbie and not great with tech so just wondering if I was to order this, where do I start?

I have the majority of my crypto on Coinbase with a couple on Crypto.com - is it pretty straight forward to get these off of these exchanges and onto the Nano S Plus?

Up until now I have just used Coinbase which I have found pretty easy to use, you can just buy the crypto you want and hold but looking at Kucoin now is it only available for trading or am I missing something?
Since you couldn't find those altcoin on Coinbase (which has wide selection of those) I guess that your plan is to buy some utter shitcoins. Do yourself a favor and stick to BTC during bear market.

Buying many altcoins in bear market and hold? I call it as suicide.
+1

This is a common newbie misconception, thinking that just because some altcoin went down 90% it makes it a good buy opportunity, not realizing that very same altcoin can (and most probably will) go down 99% more while majority won't even survive the bear market. That recent LUNA fiasco was a perfect example of that, and caused many people losing shit load of money.

Ive done £100 which is not too much to gamble on compared to the thousands people lost on Luna.

I DCA Bitcoin every day I just like to have a few long shot altcoins too incase one of them does well next bull run.

Hi,

Have just bought £100 worth of Verasity (VRA) which got me 24500 total.

I have just gone to withdraw this to stake elsewhere but noticed there is a fee of 1500 VRA.

The APY for staking this crypto is 18.25% - is this worth doing or due to the fee am I just better off holding?

I plan to hold for 18-24 months.

If anyone could advise on the above or on staking in general if it is worth it.

Thanks

Yes I use Binance too for a couple of my coins and looks like it is a lot smoother then Kucoin is.

I have worked it out now, part of it was down to just being a new platform I am not used to but on first impressions I prefer Binance.
674  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Kucoin help - Just signed up. on: July 04, 2022, 10:11:12 AM
It is not as simple as Coinbase by the sounds of it.

On Coinbase, I select the crypto I want and literally just press buy. I do not see this option on Kucoin.

Kucoin however I have to do this through Spot trading?
675  Other / Beginners & Help / Kucoin help - Just signed up. on: July 04, 2022, 09:28:46 AM
Hi,

I have just signed up with Kucoin as there are a couple of altcoins I want to purchase at these extremely low prices we are currently seeing and hold for the next 1-2 years.

Up until now I have just used Coinbase which I have found pretty easy to use, you can just buy the crypto you want and hold but looking at Kucoin now is it only available for trading or am I missing something? I just can't see a quick way of buying crypto like you can on Coinbase.

I just want to buy about £200 worth of each altcoin and hold, I don't want to trade.

First started crypto in February this year so am new to all of this and the current bear market we are going through.

Let me first congratulate you for investing on bitcoin instead of other cryptocurrencies that have higher risk than you could think of, should in case you're not told, bitcoin is the only digital cryptocurrency that deserves an investment with but that does not mean that there's no risk at all in doing so, it is a volatile currency that can move up or down in price, and how you study and understand the timing to when to enter the market, buy, sell or hold determines your chances of high profitability you stand to derive and this is only the digital currency whose reputation has a great value over time for an investment against other cryptos.

I have so far invested £4,500 and my portfolio is down 45%. I have not sold any of my positions and have kept buying at these low prices with the intention of holding until the bull market comes and I can cash out some nice profits.

This time is an opportunity to add up to your experience in learning to know when to sell and hold, you have to understand the bullrun and bearish implication considering the history of the past events along with it, definitely bitcoin will rise and you will have the better opportunity to make profit when that time comes, i hope you had enough patience to hold till then.

Thanks but I only started investing in Bitcoin 2 weeks ago when it dropped below $20k. I felt it had always been too expensive until recent weeks and am glad I waited hopefully it can stay below $25k for a while so I can accumulate a good amount to hold long term.

I don’t understand why people sell at a loss and I would rather hold. Being 45% down right now is not ideal but I want to hold for 2-3 years at least and by then should see good amount of profit, especially if I keep buying at these lower prices which I plan to do.
677  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How quick does the market grow during bull market? on: July 03, 2022, 12:33:58 PM
I mean I have not sold any of my positions yet I am just continuing to buy at these lower prices and will hold until the bull run comes even if that does mean I have to wait till 2024.

I have most of my portfolio on Coinbase but yes I have been looking at different hardware wallets lately as I do feel I will need to get my investments off the exchanges sooner rather than later.

Hi ,

First started crypto in February this year so am new to all of this and the current bear market we are going through.

I have so far invested £4,500 and my portfolio is down 45%. I have not sold any of my positions and have kept buying at these low prices with the intention of holding until the bull market comes and I can cash out some nice profits.

I have been dollar cost averaging the last 5-6 weeks since we had our first real crash in May which means I now have pretty good average buys for all my holdings so hopefully when the bull market does come again it will take no time at all for me to be in profit.

I understand none of us know exactly when the next bull market will be here but I am just wondering if anyone could give me their experience with what it was like during previous bull markets and how fast we can expect our investments to grow again?

680  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto tax UK ? on: July 01, 2022, 02:38:03 PM
Hi ,

You say 10-20 % , that is quite a range what does it depend on?
Hopefully it is closer to 10%  Grin
It depends on your taxable income for the year.

10% basic rate will be charged if your income band is up to £50,270
20% higher rate will be charge if your income band is £50,271 and above

You won't be taxed if your income is equal to or lower than the tax allowance which is currently £12,300.

Some of the amounts and rates I mentioned could be wrong or could be different in the coming years. Make sure you stay up to date and maybe consult an accountant for more accurate tax filing.

So if i was to make £40,000 profit (below £50,270) I would only pay 10% tax but if i was to make £60,000 profit (above £50,271) I would pay 20%?

Do I have that right?
It's difficult to explain but I'll try to make it simple using some assumptions.

Let me first correct my previous answer. It's not just based on the your taxable income for the year but also on the taxable gains you made from selling other assets.

taxable income comes from your salaries less deductions
taxable gains comes from profit selling cryptocurrencies less deductions

Aside from crypto investing, let's assume you also have a job and your taxable income is £30,000.

Using your first example of selling at a £40,000 profit. That will be your taxable gains assuming you have no deductible losses.

To determine what income band you belong, taxable income + taxable gains - capital gains allowance
£30,000 + £40,000 - £12,300 = £57,700. This is above £50,270 which means the rate applicable to your capital gains is 20%.

Capital Gains Tax:
£40,000 - £12,300 = £27,700
£27,700 * 20% = £5,540

Once again, I suggest that you consult an accountant. Taxation can be complicated and you could miss other details that affects the computation. Even my example could be inaccurate.

My salary is £30,500.

If I was to cash out £50,000 profit for example , what would the total tax be I have to pay?

(If too confusing or long don't worry about it)
