And lastly... I just noticed your marijuana laden gravatar...

The last time I lent some money to a stoner... well, I basically gave it to him I suppose, because he didn't remember receiving it apparently!

(You might want to up your professionalism if you expect people to hand you their hard earned bitcoins) Wink

Edit: I personally have no problem with marijuana. I know it can be used quite effectively for a variety of medical conditions. But I also know that there is a horrible stigma associated with marijuana in this world, and I would not be happy if I walked into my bank and witnessed my mortgage broker puffing on a joint is all.

Well I kept the website professional. Just cause I use medical marijuana doesn't really mean anything. I use it cause I used to have seizures. People can hate if they want I guess

Definitely not hating! I am a Canadian, it's prevalent here, and  I have enjoyed many trips to Amsterdam... I simply don't tell clients that when we're in the middle of a business meeting is all, or especially upon meeting them for the first time.
662  Bitcoin / Mining / Using Ubuntu 11.04? Be sure not to move your mouse off of your main screen! on: May 08, 2011, 03:02:33 AM
I have 4 * 5870s setup on one motherboard.

I have downclocked them and use a high -f value for poclbm so they are running cool enough - ~75-80C at most...

I (for some reason) took my mouse pointer and started dragging it off the screen, to the far right.

The computer immediately showed a black screen and said:

Code:
>> Starting CUPS spooler/server                                             [ok]
>> Checking battery status                                                  [ok]
>> Stopping System V runlevel compatibility                                 [ok]

I had to re-start and everything was all good again. I also double checked this behavior, it is most definitely caused by allowing your mouse to wonder... which worries me because I know some optical mice will simply do that given long periods of inactivity... Whenever I leave my mouse in the top right of the screen for example if I am watching something, it will occasionally and randomly move itself.

Has anybody else experienced this? Do you have any idea what could be causing it? Do you know how I can stop it!?

Specs:
Ubuntu 11.04 desktop 64 bit, latest poclbm, SDK 2.1, catalyst v11.4, 16gb usb as hdd... ask if you need more info.
663  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Are there any "communist" pools? on: May 08, 2011, 02:59:18 AM
I would expect there would be some sort of measure to try to make sure each person has only one account in the pool

You're dreaming bud, sorry - wish it were possible myself Wink

But you should read up about the freeloader/free rider effect.
664  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Selling 5970 cheap for btc. on: May 07, 2011, 07:16:48 AM
No offense OP, but I would suggest that the buyer do this deal in person.

I have been ripped off too many times by "newbies" (people with 1 or 2 posts) on anonymous forums to suggest otherwise.

Good luck selling your wares!

666  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitCoins For Charity Launched Today! on: May 07, 2011, 07:11:19 AM
How would someone verify if the money is actually forwarded on to the charities?

Don't you think it would be more beneficial to the community to work on getting these charities to accept BTC directly, rather than converting the $ for them to USD?

I for one think this is a much better idea.

Charities are always looking for a way to accept more money, I doubt we'd be pulling any teeth there!
667  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitCoins For Charity Launched Today! on: May 07, 2011, 07:10:24 AM
I would like to announce the launch of my very own website aimed at helping the less fortunate. What is it you ask? I have set up multiple addresses for different charities. When you donate to one the BitCoins are received, traded for USD, and then donated to the charity to which they were sent. I will be working on the site as we go so expect it to only get better and grow as a community.

I DO NOT make profit off of this site. You can currently donate to the growth of the site under the 'Get Involved' tab. This will go towards buying a domain name, upgrading the bandwidth, getting our own emails, etc.

The link is here: http://bitcoinsforcharity.webs.com/

The top 5 contributors will be listed as well. If you would like your name included with your address either PM me on here or on the website.

I hope you enjoy and leave feedback! I will continue to work on the site and help it grow. If you have any spare BTC lying around collecting dust please donate it to the less fortunate. Some if these people/animals aren't as lucky as we are and grow up not knowing what its like to have good health, money, loved ones, etc.

Good luck!

I doubt many of the members on bitcoin.org donate much money to causes that don't guarantee 90%+ payout rates, are legally registered as a not for profit company, etc... I for one always ask for those credentials before shelling out any cash.

I have some questions for you...

How are you going to prove that payments I make to you were made to the charities? How long will it take for my money to get from your bitcoin account to the charity's bank account?

How much of a "fee" will you be taking in exchange for being so generous in making our donations for us? Or if you will not be accepting a fee, which currency exchange will you use to convert the money and how much will they and your bank charge to turn it into cash?

What experience do you have running a charitable organization? How many years have you worked for a charity? Which one did you work for?

Most people donate significant money to a charity in order to get a tax break, so I doubt many people would be up to making anonymous donations, unless it's for wikileaks or something similar.

Please excuse me for being skeptical, but I am sure you can understand.

I would be amused to know whether eBay cuts your listing short simply for including the word "Bitcoin", regardless of the fact that you're not mentioning it to solicit a non-PayPal payment.

And if not now, in the future.

I have seen a few ATI cards for sale on ebay recently promoting "Great for bitcoins!" in their titles...

671  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Why Does The Bitcoin Server Create ~5x Fewer Connections Than Regular Bitcoin? on: May 07, 2011, 01:29:48 AM
I have noticed this for a few days now...

And yes I have forwarded my ports Tongue (In fact, I don't have any to forward, I am not behind a router).

Whenever I double click on (I'm using windows) the bitcoin client, it pops up and begins acquiring connections quite quickly, up to about 50 or 60 connections in less than a minute I would say.

When I run bitcoin.exe -server from the command line, the GUI pops up like normal but it only ever reaches 10-15 connections maximum, even after waiting for an hour or two.

Anybody else notice this? Anybody know why?

Notes: Windows 7, 32 Bit
672  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The BTC Client Should Randomly Change Ports Every So Often, And Encrypt Traffic! on: May 06, 2011, 08:02:30 PM
Use Tor for encryption, then your ISP do not know that you are having Bitcoin traffic.
As long as there is an exit node in your circuit that's ISP allowes bitcoin traffic we should be safe.

And I'm not sure about the ports. Since we do not need to forward the port to have bitcoin work, I don't know if it was a problem if every network participant would have this port closed. So mabye port rotating isn't necessary, but I do not know for sure.

It's not about ports being opened or closed on the router, it's about hiding your traffic from the ISPs so that they do not know you are running torrents, bitcoins, etc...
673  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why Don't "We" Pay Our Bitcoin Client Coders In BTC? on: May 06, 2011, 08:01:26 PM
Reasons not to do it:  allegations of corruption/favoritism if people doing the pulling have to decide between two pull requests.  Maybe less cooperation to find/fix things if people are competing for bounties.

This could easily happen, yes. Why don't we force contributions to be anonymous then?
I think we're going to much into hypothetical cases. If people let know in the github issue topic that they are working on something, and finish it within reasonable time, they should get the bounty.

Yes, there might be corner cases / race conditions where multiple people fix an issue at the same time, in that case I guess you should either choose the technically best solution or (if just as good) share the bounty. But I don't expect it to happen a lot.

I don't agree on forcing anonymous contributions or creating extra github accounts... You're making it very inconvenient that way.

You're right. After seeing how quickly the community learnt about and turned on the btcex owner, I am sure this wouldn't be a huge problem - but anonymizing things is a possible solution should it arise.
674  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Any way to get bitcoind.exe to show you un-verified (but generated) blocks? on: May 06, 2011, 07:58:53 PM
I believe they now show up (as of 0.3.21) with a status of "immature".

See here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5485.0

Oops, that was a pull request and hasn't been merged yet. I'll shut up now. Smiley

Ok then, so they do not show up as of 0.3.21? Nice... Hopefully I have some immature blocks waiting to grow old with me Wink

Thanks for the reference!
675  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Multiple computers - Worth it? on: May 06, 2011, 07:55:55 PM
your going to need a bigger power supply.

I tried to run 5870s on a 650 watt. Burned out in a hr.

I went with a 900 watt from best buy.  That held up.

c-rock

5870s are 188 watts a piece using stock clocks.

You should easily fit 2x5870s (376 Watts) and even the largest CPU (145 Watts) and still have 130 watts left over for fans, hard drives, ram, etc...

If you used a 45Watt CPU you would have 230 watts left over.

Curious to know the brands of both your 5870s and your PSU c-rock..?

Going to try re-starting now and see if that fixes anything.

Edit: NOPE :S It seems my computer has suddenly developed an affliction with bitcoin.exe

I am running bitcoind.exe -server right now, but how do I know that it is actually working?! I can see that my miners are hashing, but when I enter bitcoind gethashespersec I see 0..Huh

Is it going to spit out a message or something once I generate a block? (bitcoind.exe?)

My bitcoin server is set up with bitcoin.exe" -server. Is the difference important?

You mean the double quote? I doubt it.
677  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Blocks downloading very slow on: May 06, 2011, 07:51:54 PM
Does verification require a lot of disk I/O? I am running it on a flash drive that gets around 5 MB/s transfer rates.

Yes, the initial hash-checking of the blockchain is also building a local database file that your client uses in the future to quickly find older transactions.  This takes massive amounts of disk I/O.  It would be better to bootstrap onto a regular hard disk and then copy the resulting database file and wallet.dat file to a new instance on a flash drive if you are looking to make it portable.  Ongoing updates are not as bad, but could still take a while over USB.

Yes it could easily be your flash drive's transfer speed that is your bottle neck.

Try grabbing one of these babies.

They are about 6 times faster than your current usb drive, and for $25 you can't go wrong.
678  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Computer crashes when I stop mining on: May 06, 2011, 07:42:36 PM
I have similar problem when running multiple GPUs.
After I quit the miner, the screen will continue working for a few seconds, then the computer locks up completely. Have to reset after that.

Will try the quite worker 1, then 2, then 3 method.

Yes, please do and report back!
679  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does anyone mine on Server 2008? on: May 06, 2011, 07:09:34 PM
I have a box running Server 2008.  It's an i7 with three PCIe x16 slots, and I'd like to take advantage of at least one of those!  Problem is, I installed the 5850, only barely got it running by pointing the Windows installer to the driver, and the Stream SDK doesn't recognize an Open CL compatible video card in the system!  Argh!

Any tips?  I notice that AMD doesn't have official support for Server 2008, but if any of you have gotten it working, well, it'd be awesome to know how.  Don't suggest switching from Server 2008 either, because I can't.  I use the box for a gameserver as well, and I can't take it down for a long enough period to reinstall the OS and the server files, etc.  I'll just build a new computer if it comes down to that.

Install windows 7 and be done with the headaches 1 hour later?! Smiley
680  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Will pay bitcoins for help! Computer restarts using pool mining. on: May 06, 2011, 07:08:08 PM
I would say Power supply problem.
My 5850 runs at 91C without any issues.

Good suggestion.

OP, how many watts is your power supply? Please don't say 350 :S

Is it a dell computer? Or is it a pre-built computer? Most of those come with the smallest possible PSU required... you might have to upgrade your PSU.
