its more convenient to pay taxes [...]

So other people should be coerced, with threat of force, to pay for your convenience. Gotcha.

You still can. All these "stores" are meant to make software as accesible as possible. Yes, they have veto power when it comes to what is allowed in their stores, but you can always download stuff the old fashioned way.

Android yes, Apple no. Though god knows, Google gives me an ominous sense of foreboding these days.

An "official" write-in list? American politics are so broken... Sad

And democracy is itself founded on a logical fallacy: The idea that if a lot of people agree on something, it must be right.

I think it's more founded on the idea that if one lot of people disagree with another lot of people, sticking a piece of paper in a box is preferable to tearing chunks out of each other.

Trust me, once you get out of here it is just from solitary confinement to general population.

This forum has the most heavy handed and arbitrary moderation I have personally ever experienced.

You serious? The kind of crap flinging and arguments I see here would not be tolerated on all the other forums I frequent. This forum is on the loose end moderation wise.

Perhaps my experience of the internet is limited.  Yes, I have been on forums where the banhammer is wielded freely, but I have never seen entire threads thrown down the Orwellian memory hole on a whim.

I saw a 10000+ post thread, including notifications of member deaths, just because it was slowing the server down on another forum.
6686  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: should we make a bitcointalk TOR hidden service? on: October 07, 2012, 04:41:56 AM
Publishing through TOR might not be enough to prevent hardcore investigation succeeding but it might be enough to stop you getting put on "a list". Problem is, using TOR probably gets you put on "a list" anyway.

Some kind of anonymous gateway might be fairly cool but the problem is anonymity is a double edged sword. Just ask (name escapes me), an old anonymous email service that got shutdown because of abuse (I want to say anonnet.fi but that's incorrect)
6687  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Gresham's Law, Anyone? on: October 07, 2012, 04:33:39 AM
The existence of legal tender laws creates a Gresham condition; since we must pay taxes in fiat currencies, and many of us still earn our primary source of income in that form, a difference in the desire to hold/spend money exists.

Gold coins are still allowed to float, for example, but because for tax purposes they are viewed as chattel with a calculable fiat currency value, in that instant of evaluation, a legal exchange rate is created. People pay their rent in dollars rather than gold coins because they recognize that the dollar is constantly dropping in value, and so it's much better to hold the gold than hold the dollars.

I guess my question is: if you have the choice between paying in Bitcoins and paying in Fed Notes, and you believe BTC have long-term value, why would you choose to hold the Fed Notes and pay in BTC?

Trade volume on the exchanges is fairly low right now FWIW (at time of last checking).
6688  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin scams on: October 07, 2012, 04:30:14 AM
The scammers smell the greed (not everyone here is greedy, of course but it's a fairly high proportion). Plus since Bitcoin is fairly new, they can wrap up old scam in new clothes and people think it's somehow different.

I'm not that worried though, it will sort itself out in time. Like others have said, it's a bit like the Wild West. At least these scammers are just asking for money and not demanding it with guns like the government does.
6689  Other / Off-topic / Re: (Poll) US presidential election: who do you hate the least? on: October 06, 2012, 08:48:10 PM
Hey, where's the option for us foreigners who do live in the USA and hate you all anyway?

j/k Cheesy

Ummm... move back to where you are more comfortable?? hahaha j/k.

What makes you think I'd be more comfortable there?

Seriously, I don't hate Americans. There's no way I'm moving back to the UK either way* though.

*The way things currently are anyway.

I would like to order three of the wolf tables but only on condition that I can also order a custom made table with a scale model of the death star enclosed
6692  Other / Off-topic / Re: What are some lessons that you've learned the hard way? on: October 06, 2012, 07:48:42 PM
Never promise anything in the immediate wake of someone's death.*

That Distribution's #1 point above applies even (and maybe especially) when it's family.

When a lawyer says he doesn't handle probate normally but he's willing to give it a go, run away.

*OK, this one wasn't my hard way but I've seen it cause trouble for others.

Last night, I built a lava moat around my house to protect me from creepers..... in retrospect I probably shouldn't have built it out of wood.

6694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hardware Bitcoin Wallet on: October 06, 2012, 06:40:02 PM
You know, someone could probably build the app to do this in C, targeting Linux as the OS, using serial as the interface, and it would probably run on gobs of hardware that's already out there for nearly free.  People could root their old 2nd generation iPod or whatever, and use it as a transaction verifier and be able to get into it for zero hardware cost (or pick one up on eBay).

That's an interesting idea. I have a portable digital storage oscilloscope that appears to have been built into an mp3player hardware. Maybe work from the rockbox project.

if you can't hold it, you don't own it

even if i will be a month or so late to the ASIC party, i will be waiting for posts of successful shipments before ordering from any of the manufactures.

Successful shipments may occur in order to get those who are holding off to release their cash. Of course, this is getting into somewhat Machiavellian territory but consider that even Madoff was paying out at first.

Again, I'm not saying that this *is* a scam, I really don't know. Just if you're going in, go in with your eyes open.

Personally, to me, the big red flag is this Sonny chap. If I was buying, I'd want to know when he came on board and what he's bringing to the table. If it's something that seems true good to be true (cheap fab etc), well, you know the rest.
6696  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Proposal: Hardware wallet on: October 06, 2012, 06:11:23 PM

For what it's worth, I have plans of a sister project where you use a smart phone instead of a dedicated piece of hardware. Not quite as secure, but close to it.

How about a dedicated piece of hardware that works with your smartphone via bluetooth?
6697  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are people scared of taxes? on: October 06, 2012, 06:08:42 PM

I pay for my retirement via SSI and Medicare.

You pay money into SSI and Medicare. Good luck getting a retirement out of them.
6698  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we in another bubble? on: October 06, 2012, 05:53:07 PM
There are so many competing factors going into bitcoin at the moment that it's hard to see how things will go in the short to medium term. I do think that mining for (real) profit is unsustainable. I mine but I wanted a new video card anyway and Bitcoin just influenced my choice (or I'd probably have gone Nvidia). It's something of a goldrush going on right now, professional miners have got themselves into something of an arms race with each other, having to continually improve (at some cost) their mining equipment just to stay more-or less where they are.

Long term, I think Bitcoin is on its way up though. I'm planning on putting a bit of fiat into it but I think I'll wait a few days until things calm down.

6700  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Gary Johnson Debates Obama and Romney Live on: October 06, 2012, 05:33:15 PM
It's a disgrace that the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) which is controlled by the two monstrous parties excludes other candidates so blatantly.
I think it is important to spread the word every time you get a chance as most people do not even know the names of other candidates besides Romney and Obama. (see for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjVTBKVGDFE )

For instance go to the official "debate"'s youtube video page and tell people (post comments) that they have more than two choices, suggest that they google Gary Johnson or search for his videos on youtube. As there seems to be a lot of activity going on there, repeat it once in a while.

Another great idea that somebody suggested somewhere on youtube (and they claim that they swung many votes this way): every time you see a political comment in social networks, respond with one of Gary's short videos. (pick a relevant one from his youtube page http://www.youtube.com/user/govgaryjohnson/videos?view=0 or LP's page: http://www.youtube.com/user/LibertarianParty/videos?view=0 )

And sign this petition: http://libertarianpetition.com/

I might just track down a list of all presidential candidates and start posting it. I lean libertarian but I think trying to dilute the whole only-two-parties thing could be a very inclusive strategy.
