6721  Other / Meta / Re: Account Email Bitcointalk on: December 15, 2021, 01:54:57 PM
There are millions of public email addresses posted by private or business parties worldwide. The fact that they are public doesn't make them vulnerable unless someone targets them, finds out things through social engineering, or bruteforces a very weak password.
I think that when you register a Bitcointalk account, the option to hide your email from the public isn't turned on by default. You have to do it manually from your profile. I might be wrong, but I think that's the way it works.
6722  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: December 15, 2021, 01:10:34 PM
But seriously, what will you do if one day the manufacturer stops releasing updates for your nano S? Are you going to risk using this hardware wallet for your savings or do you decide to buy a new one? It seems to me that it is time for users to prepare an action plan for such cases.
If Nano S support ended on Monday, that doesn't make the hardware wallets that so many of us have vulnerable from Tuesday. They can still be used just fine. You can always follow what is going on with the development, discovered bugs, and new vulnerabilities with their newer devices and make up your mind when it's time to find an alternative. Maybe a Trezor, a Coldcard, or maybe a Bitbox. I have never given any serious thoughts to an alternative HW because so far I didn't need to.
6723  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Isn’t KYC anti-ethical to Bitcoin? on: December 15, 2021, 10:16:42 AM
KYC was never meant to be a part of Bitcoin, but then again, satoshi wasn't talking about Taproot, SegWit, or the Lightning Network either. It's the userbase that decides how Bitcoin will proceed. And the users clearly don't mind using centralized exchanges and payment providers where you exchange your coins for fiat. Whenever fiat is involved, you can expect KYC and AML regulations to be respected.

I don't see it as unethical if you know about the requirement from the beginning. If an exchange requires that you verify your identity, you can either do it, or you can try your luck with a DEX that doesn't request that. In reality, most people will just to what the CEX says and provide them with the info they ask for.

An example of unethical behavior would be an exchange being advertised as not having KYC requirements, but once you deposit some money into it, they ask you to undergo KYC and explain the source of the funds. If the majority of bitcoin users said NO to KYC, CEXs wouldn't hold such a significant position in the whole crypto economy and they would be forced to change their practices. Unfortunately, that won't happen.
6724  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Slot Machine Strategy? on: December 15, 2021, 09:37:14 AM
I don't really play slots that often, especially in physical casinos since the RTP percentages there are lower compared to those you can find on online platforms. I have heard gamblers say the same thing that you mentioned in your OP. That it's a good idea to wait for a slot machine to "swallow" a lot of money until it's ready to spit something out. But in reality, it's all random. If you are lucky enough, you can win the jackpot on your first spin or spend your whole life playing and never win anything.

Statistically, you should always go for the slots with the highest RTPs because those will spit out more money to players long-term. But have you ever seen a gambler in a physical casino ask the staff how high the RTP is? I haven't and they don't really care.
6725  Other / Meta / Re: Importance Of Merit Sources || Why do we need merit Source? on: December 15, 2021, 09:26:11 AM
I wrote a similar thread back in 2019 where I tried to find users who have earned a lot of merits but never sent anyone a single one. Maybe you have seen it. Feel free to check the names and compare it with the ones you found, maybe many of them match. The last time I made changes to it was in February of this year when I removed those users who started sending merits to others.

We keep going around in circles all the time. It comes down to this. You are not going to delete those files and most probably you aren't going to reinstall your OS either. So just keep them and do whatever you want.

Your computer has already been infected for who knows how long. Maybe it wasn't anything serious and your AVs picked up tracking cookies, but maybe not. You are too confident in the performances of AV software. Those are just pills and antibiotics that you take WHEN YOU ARE ALREADY SICK. You need to take precautions not to get sick in the first place.

If you believe your computer is now safe, keep using it.
If you don't think so, reinstall your OS and start fresh.

Are we going to discuss this several months until you make a decision?
6727  Other / Meta / Re: Do You Believe a New Forum Software Will Attract More Users to Bitcointalk? on: December 15, 2021, 08:43:50 AM
...and more free conversations are done on the telegram.
I never understood the attraction really. It's a spam fest. People sending rockets and lambos and asking when the coin will be listed on a new exchange. If a channel doesn't have a full-time moderator you can see all kinds of spam services being advertised. God forbid that you join a Telegram channel of an exchange to ask a legitimate question about their services. You will be contacted by several semi-retarded scammer wannabes who will ask you "have you invested?", "how can I help you?", "did you heard about our newest investment strategy?" The only thing with Telegram that could appeal to me is being able to chat with someone quickly over PMs. But since any of the parties involved in the private chat can delete the exchanged messages between themselves, it's far from perfect.
6728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Search statistics about necessary transaction fees within the next x blocks? on: December 14, 2021, 08:42:21 PM
If you are planning to perform coin consolidations sometime in the future, it won't matter much if you used new addresses for each payment you received or if you generated a new one every time. Once you consolidate all those inputs into a single one, there is digital proof that all inputs and addresses belong to the same person who signed for the coin consolidation to take place.
6729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core wallet spends BTC 0.07!! USD 4000!! to make two small dust sendings on: December 14, 2021, 08:23:28 PM
Since we are talking about a relatively big amount of coins, have you checked your Ledger seed to be 100% sure that it's correct and there are no mistakes in it? There are a few ways you can do that. You can restore your device to factory settings, delete your Ledger Live portfolio in the app, re-enter your seed to recover your accounts, and see if it will recover and find the correct address you just funded and its balance.

Another way to check your seed is using the Recovery Check app > https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007223753-Recovery-Check?docs=true
6730  Other / Archival / Re: Don't send your personal data to anyone in PM on: December 14, 2021, 07:54:47 PM
Well, yes. That works great if you have available the public key of the receiver.
It only takes one PM exchange between you and the other person to get hold of his public key. Many people don't use PGP, but Electrum is one of the most popular Bitcoin wallets and even newbies know about it. Downloading, verifying the signatures, and installing it is easy peasy and it gives you a good way to encrypt and decrypt messages.
6731  Other / Archival / Re: Self-moderation in topics with financial relations on: December 14, 2021, 07:48:50 PM
Good Suggestions, But I think the forum shouldn't allow self-moderated topics at all for financial-related services.
I don't think they should be removed from the marketplace boards altogether. Suchmoon mentioned a few legitimate reasons why they are needed and I agree with her/him.
*Damn it suchmoon, I never know how to address you. Do I use her or him?

But not everyone should have that privilege.
Another suggestion could be to make a post and pin it that highlights the importance of checking scrapped posts in self-moderated threads in the marketplace. We have scrappers that gather everything that is written (even posts that get deleted). I would think that many newbies aren't aware of them, and don't know that they can use them to check the entire history of a thread. That way they could see warnings that OPs of such threads have deleted if the big warning sign telling them to proceed with caution isn't enough.
6732  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Possible Compromised Laptop With Seed in Password Manager? on: December 14, 2021, 07:34:33 PM
I'm a windows user since I was a child. I've used in their terminology and as much as I've tried replacing it with Linux, I've failed.
I can relate to what you are saying and I am pretty much the same way. All I have ever used is Windows, but I don't go around poking and clicking on everything. I am cautious by nature and that has helped me avoid malware and viruses my entire adult life.

So, if someone like Jerry faces such issues, you can't just tell them to use another operating system if they've used to use Windows their entire life.
No, that would just confuse him even more. I don't think it would be much safer because he doesn't listen and does things his way.

Not that I like being biased, but he does look like the person who's here only for the quick profit without giving much attention to the potential risks buying shitcoins may have.
I really don't know. He doesn't seem that active in the altcoin section and I can't remember he ever mentioned that he participates in bounties.

I avoid all shitcoins, so I'm totally out of the loop on this, but aren't there a bunch of other trash centralized coins which allow to you launch your own even trashier centralized tokens on top of them, such as Tron and BSC? Can you store those on a hardware wallet?
For BSC, you need to install a bridge as far as I know, but yes it should work. I have never owned any BSC so can't tell you much about it. Tron and their TRC10/TRC20 tokens can be stored on Ledger. They do require that you have Tron on the same account otherwise the portfolio seems empty and there are no records of your Tron transactions. I occasionally keep USDT on the Tron network on my Ledger and besides a longer sync time compared to Bitcoin, everything else is ok.

I've never understood why people make such a big deal of this. It takes literally 10 seconds to swap apps.
Honestly, me neither. The reason why I would stop using my Nano S will surely not be because I can't have 3 or more apps installed on it at the same time.
6733  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Possible Compromised Laptop With Seed in Password Manager? on: December 14, 2021, 10:19:41 AM
He already said that he invests heavily in shitcoins so shitty that Ledger doesn't even have apps for them in their list of 1300+ coins.
I can't stop but wondering what kind of coins and tokens those are. The majority of shitcoins are Ethereum-based, so he can just keep those on his Ethereum address on his Ledger. Maybe he doesn't know that and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.

...I just discovered the other day that you can basically just install a handful of coins onto a Ledger Nano S, even if it 'supports' hundreds.
Even that is an overstatement right now. That handful is now 2 standalone apps, 3 if you are lucky (but I doubt it). You can still install a bunch of dependent apps that are forked of the standalone app. For everything else, you have to rely on installing/uninstalling to work with an app you need at that moment in time.
6734  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Battery Pandemic on: December 14, 2021, 10:06:40 AM
Someone posted in their subreddit yesterday about "not receiving a refund" and despite not having enough details, perhaps it could be counted as a confirmation.
I trust the people who post on Reddit as much as I trust Ledger announcements or the US soldiers who want to share their gold with me that they stole from Saddam. What I am trying to say is that I trust none of that until I find myself in a situation where I have to experience it myself or I know someone personally who experienced a similar case.
6735  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: December 14, 2021, 10:00:51 AM
But they are selling a ton of devices. So, the question is WHAT are they doing that other manufacturers are not? And if the other manufacturers do the same will they pull sales from Ledger? And if not why not?
Marketing and social media engagement could be one reason. On Facebook, Ledger has 57k followers, Trezor only 30k. Ledger's Twitter page is followed by 267k people, Trezor only has 158k. Ledger has a YouTube channel with 35k subscribers, Trezor's is only followed by 1.8k. Ledger releases several videos a week, Trezor released only 4 in the last 3 months.

If you do a Google search of "hardware wallet", Ledger's official site is the first result you will see. It's followed by several guides and articles and then you will find Trezor's official site towards the bottom of the first page results.

All that shows that Ledger is easier to find and come across. You see their content more frequently on social media and YouTube. Whether people like that or not, it works. I am sure they have many more partnerships with brands from the crypto sphere than Trezor. I think they just announced one with the FTX exchange a few days ago. Everyone using that exchange will probably see the Ledger branding somewhere, and they won't see the same for Trezor.

Ledger has also had it native app (Ledger Live) much longer than Trezor had its Trezor Suite. Love it or hate it, it was still there. You can use it for trading, staking, exchanging, for DeFi, soon for NFTs, etc. None of that might appeal to hardcore bitcoiners, but obviously tens and hundreds of thousands of people like it.

That's also bound to happen at some point for the Nano X, but I don't think they'll be doing it at the same time [e.g. fewer sales] + based on "this" post, it appears that in the near future, they might be releasing it with their "new logo".
For sure. They have already rebranded Ledger Live some time ago and they will surely do the same with the hardware wallets. They just have to sell the old stock first.

Honestly, I have never heard of Privnote, but I will bookmark this thread as it can come in handy sometimes in the future. Can't say that I find the service particularly attractive and it could be a great honeypot for various agencies and organizations. Not saying it is, just that someone somewhere could get interested in the content that is being sent over the service.

PGP encrypted messages work just fine.
Besides PGP, you could just encrypt a message with your Electrum wallet and PM it to the other party. Just click on Tools > Encrypt/decrypt messages.
Enter your message, the public key of the receiver, and click on encrypt.

6737  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽UEFA Champions League Discussion Thread -- Group Stage! on: December 13, 2021, 12:32:58 PM
Except Juventus, I'm pretty sure about the rest of the teams to advance.
Same here but for other reasons than the ones you mentioned in the rest of your post.

I know that Juventus have a better performance in the Champions League comparing to the Serie A. But Sporting are not a team to be underestimated as they defeated a strong team like Dortmund in their group matches. As Juventus have an inconsistent form in general, Sporting might have a chance.
The reason that Dortmund performed below their expectations during the group stages is because they were missing many injured players. At times, 6-7 and more players were on the injury list at the same time. The biggest handicap was that they had to manage without their best player Haaland. I am also unsure about Juventus because they basically have no build-up play from their midfielders. None of them can go head-to-head against teams with strong midfield players. The positive news is that Dybala was just examined at the Juve medical center and his injury doesn't seem serious. So unless he gets injured again, he will be available for the knockout stage. There is plenty of time though. Even though he is an attacker, he is often forced to go back and help the incompetent midfielders.

On to može uraditi. Ne pitaj me kako.
6739  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: December 13, 2021, 10:17:33 AM
They can easily halt the software upgrades whenever they want.
Sure, but do you think that it would be a smart business decision to tell their clients: you know what, all those Nano S's you bought, are now useless? From tomorrow, you wont be able to connect to Ledger Live. Hahah, suckers.

Also, something you both didn't say (or I've missed) : it also depends on how other software will behave. I mean that unless something fundamental changes or some big flaw is found, I don't see why Electrum wouldn't support the Nano S for many more years after Ledger stops updating it.
Good point. But there is still the issue of not being able to update your Bitcoin crypto app or install the newest firmware. In case your Ledger resets itself, you wont be able to configure it without accessing Ledger Live and downloading the BTC app as well. But yeah, Electrum should still work.
