6781  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Lost Nano Ledger but have pass phrase with me on: June 01, 2021, 05:49:33 PM
So, I have the pass phrase (all 24 words) written on the card provided by the nano ledger. I also have password obviously.

Then you are good. I advise you move your funds though, since if somebody has his hands on your hardware wallet, he can brute force it and access your money (it is a possibility).

But the real question is, whether this will help me recover my ETH?

Yes. The safest is to use a new Hardware wallet for this, it can be initialized with your seed. It can be done with (software) wallets too, (at least for BTC it can be done and I guess that there are smart enough wallets for ETH too) but it's less safe.

I can't tell though what's the best course of action. If it's just lost, maybe buying a new hardware wallet is best (although it may take time to arrive to you). If it's stolen or there's a high chance that it ended up on others' hands, I'd move the funds asap.
6782  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: weird transaction and using old electrum wallet with lightning stuff? on: June 01, 2021, 05:43:02 PM
what did he do there, why he not just sent the 0.018 btc directly and without some surplus?

What happens when you want to buy a soda and have only a 20$ bill? Don't you pay the entire 20$ and receive 19$ back as change?
Well, this guy had a 82.22624290 BTC "bill", and, although it's not a nice round number, the concept is identical.
6783  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if Bitcoin had 1 minute block time and 1 minute difficulty retarget on: June 01, 2021, 05:39:08 PM
4 colluding pool operators can do it at zero cost.

If the 51% attack goes through, probably a hard fork will have to be forced and most probably the miners will leave those pools.
This means that the cost is a high risk to go out of business. It doesn't look like zero cost to me.
6784  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't believe in digital money? Well... on: June 01, 2021, 05:23:31 PM
Imagine when we are at 20% in a few years!

20% won't come easy, but the growth should be exponential.
So even though 20% is still far, 40% will come much much faster afterwards.

The problem is, most people will only adopt new technologies... if it is more convenient and more user-friendly.
Actually the problem is that people will only adopt technologies they understand.

You are both right and both wrong. People don't understand nor care how Visa works, but it's extremely user friendly (and yes, many don't use even Visa...)
So the wallets have to be even more user friendly and fool proof. Then... even those who rick and come use Bitcoin get surprised by the volatility and the tx fees.

For the merchants it may be easier, they just need a payment processor that accepts Bitcoin and transfers them fiat into the bank account (please don't expect all merchants install bitcoin software for payments and also handle tax for bitcoin vs fiat), so maybe a good first step would be to get more known payment processors accept Bitcoin (and maybe also don't make the prices 10% bigger if paid in BTC).

If so, average Joe will know the bitcoin is an investment vehicle and he also can pay easily with it (he will see it as payment option everywhere he pays). It may make him curious enough to try it.
6785  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] NotATether.com - Bitcoin Knowledgebase on: June 01, 2021, 05:12:45 PM
Hey guys, I am thinking about adding a section about ongoing scam websites to my site. What do you guys think of this idea? How should I write about it to avoid mentioning every single scam site and its (broken) domain, since that wouldn't be particularly engaging to readers?

It doesn't have to be a particularly good read in order to become a .. reference.
Of course, you have to pay attention and find a way to post those domains in a way you won't just create back links to them and help their ranking.
And of course, you have to automate the process.

All in all, it can be more work than the reward, but it can become a reference site people come to get and updated list from, a list for domains they can put into host file as 0.0.0.0 or something similar (maybe you even provide such a file too, but make sure it's not a static link, else nobody will visit your page)
6786  Economy / Speculation / Re: Taproot lock-in FOMO is coming(?) on: June 01, 2021, 05:06:14 PM
2 weeks from now we could be sitting at $70k.

Indeed, Taproot lock in should happen in less than 2 weeks. And indeed, at the current state of the market, it could be just the news we need to make it move in the right direction.
On the other hand, I fear that it might just not be enough, especially as Taproot will become active only in... November.
So as much as I'd love to see you're right, I'd love to see some other good news too and maybe together they'll give the market the kick it needs.
6787  Local / Minerit / Re: Eroare minat de pe laptop, se merita sau nu? on: June 01, 2021, 04:58:29 PM
Ma puteti ajuta cu o informatie, sfat?

Code:
cmdline_launcher -algo ethash -wallet YOUR_ETH_WALLET -coin eth -rigName YOUR_ETH_WORKER -email YOUR_EMAIL

Re: Nou pe forum on: June 01, 2021, 04:44:49 PM

6790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem with old wallet. Please help. on: May 31, 2021, 02:53:15 PM
Tried listunspent, it just shows the same address as the incoming transaction which is shown as non existant.

Go to a block explorer, like https://blockchair.com/ or https://mempool.space/, enter the address there and see if there are indeed funds on that address.
If that's the only address with funds and they're there, the things could go easier.

What do you mean by corect wallet.dat with balance ?There is only one wallet on the tablet

The wallet.dat file size is not necessarily a proper indicator. And if you have more than one wallet.dat on the device you no longer can be 100% sure which is the good one. It's not uncommon to only think you backed up the correct wallet.dat. However, updating core should not overwrite wallet.dat

So full sync on the laptop then rescan ?

I'd start with trying to see if there are indeed funds on the expected address. Because if so, you'll be able to access the funds without waiting for the entire blockchain (by using a SPV wallet).
6791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem with old wallet. Please help. on: May 31, 2021, 02:08:22 PM
First of all, this kind of questions belong to Bitcoin Technical Support. Try to move the topic there (bottom-left, move topic), you have better chance to get better answers there.

since the tablet is of friend of mine ,he asked me for help.I cant start it synchronising

Keep in mind that the full blockchain is around 400 GB and with normal settings that's to be also saved.
If the sync stopped because of the lack of space, you may try to run it in pruned mode, although I would go for this only as last resort (you still have to download the full blockchain and if a resync is needed it means one more full download, not just resync from disk).

Im afraid to update it forcecfuly , because i've red you can loose the amount of the wallet. I believe the original version is not installed but copied over , i dont find the btc core in the remove programs tab on windows.

If you want to check the files should be, by default in the paths written here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory
The most important is to backup wallet.dat (just you have to make sure you backup the correct wallet.dat, the one with funds).

I cant use dumpwallet on the tablet because that command is not available in v0.8.7
How can i find the original btc address.

I don't know if listunspent is available, but imho it could be one possible direction to check for the address(es) with funds.
6792  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Welcome bonuses on: May 31, 2021, 10:24:58 AM
nullified  by  attached wagering requirements  hidden in the terms and conditions (T&C) that regulate gambling on those sites. Would you read T&C before go ahead and make your first deposit attracted by those welcome bonuses?

I usually don't fully read T&C. I do "scan" though it, but that's all.
And this means that I've missed most of the times the requirements. Sometimes I've heard about them in the casino/bonus topic, sometimes I've heard too late.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but one specific case was not long ago, a casino wanted a advertising campaign and I've missed the part the the earnings have to be wagered first in order to withdraw.
If I wouldn't have missed that bit, I would have not do the job. (I was quite tight with both time and money and gambling is never 100% sure.)
I've done my part (I am a man of my word), but I've obviously gambled away quite a big part of the earning (because, as much as I enjoy gambling, my luck is just awful), so it ended up like an unnecessary waste of time.

I do like the places there the bonus is clearly stated from start how it's "handled". I've played quite a lot of times (especially longer ago) with free money, but I knew what to expect and I entered only when I had the proper time to enjoy the game.

All in all, I am not at all against the rules for withdrawal of the bonus money. They clearly make sense. Just imho they have to be said also where the bonus is advertised.
6793  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: May 31, 2021, 10:09:27 AM
He is a really interesting character. For example, he always complains about his tyres in every race but he still gains a victory at the end.  Cheesy

Well, he talks many times only "for the audience". And also he may have some coding for what he wants to say.
He knows that everybody listens, want to get any tiny big of clue about what his strategy is going to be, and obviously profit.

We cannot know if "a complaint about tyres" may actually mean that he can change 5 turns later than discussed, for example. Or maybe it's just "everything is fine".
6794  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't believe in digital money? Well... on: May 31, 2021, 06:59:44 AM
How often do you actually have cash? It's rare that I do! The next item on this list is money.

In my country paper money is used way more than you'd imagine. But I still buy Bitcoin, since I expect world to ... evolve. As simple as that.
6795  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: De pe ce platforma este indicat sa investesc in XRP? on: May 31, 2021, 06:27:48 AM

Cheesy

6796  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Paypal to allow cryptocurrency withdrawals on: May 29, 2021, 06:14:52 PM
Hopefully the fees for buying/selling bitcoin won't be much higher than Coinbase, just as an example.  If they are, PayPal is being stupid.  So we'll see.

I expect them be high. That's how PP works after all.
But imho it should not be a problem, PP works with different audience than Coinbase. If one will get to withdraw to his own wallet, he may get to have a better perspective on Bitcoin ecosystem and next time he may not be afraid to use Coinbase or maybe even P2P at some point...

As you said: the gain as awareness will be huge. With the rest... I guess that we need patience.
6797  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: De pe ce platforma este indicat sa investesc in XRP? on: May 29, 2021, 05:30:40 PM
am vazut stirea - interesant si totusi nu prea. E PayPal - cine a lucrat cu ei stie cum functioneaza.

6798  Economy / Economics / Re: Debate: Please explain to me why... on: May 28, 2021, 12:22:35 PM
Well - yes Smiley

Thank you. Smiley

but regardless of its merits, the price of BTC is not part of those merits in the majority of cases. Or, well, I am still waiting to hear a valid explanation why it would make sense that it actually is Smiley

It's the way the markets/exchange are done. That's all.
I'm not convinced that you can get a better answer, I'll keep an eye though  Grin

There are quite a few "alt-coin" systems that actually are pretty good; maybe not in the eyes of BTC Believers

I am also "fond" of a few altcoins there and believe me, I've seen now and then (especially in my early beginning when I paid more attention to altcoins than Bitcoin) discussions for decoupling from Bitcoin. Nothing worthy has happened in that direction.

this greatly delays that Satoshi-denominated future you all wish would happen tomorrow.

There's a mistake here: Bitcoin "believers" and greedy "investors" (speculators) who can't wait to cash out are not the same thing.

What's worse - it gives time to Central Banks to get with the program and devise their own crypto-similar systems and THAT, my dear fellows, is something we definitely don't want.

Central banks are expected to compete with USDT, not with Bitcoin, actually.
6799  Economy / Economics / Re: Debate: Please explain to me why... on: May 28, 2021, 11:57:39 AM
What I do not understand is how anyone can expect the crypto space to be taken seriously if all alt-coins are basically BTC shadows.

You seem to be overlooking exactly what I meant as answer. I'll try to broaden that.

They are not shadows, but most of their price fluctuation makes sense only if you look at it in price vs Bitcoin.
There are far too few coins that can be bought directly for fiat.
Most of the altcoins and tokens can be traded against Bitcoin and many day traders do this, making the coins look like depending on Bitcoin.
Most Bitcoiners also don't take altcoins serious. But it's altcoins' community who has to do something about it if they think they can do it, for example make their own exchanges where Bitcoin is not accepted and only their coins vs fiat will work. Then they'll break the chain and either go out of the shadow, either (more likely) disappear.

Is this a better answer?
6800  Economy / Economics / Re: Debate: Please explain to me why... on: May 28, 2021, 11:27:26 AM
First of all, the rule has it's exceptions on every price fluctuation. It has happened that Bitcoin has fallen and certain altcoin was (still) rising.
But I think that Bitcoin price is a great indicator of the money flow in the crypto markets, especially as most altcoins can still be bought mainly only if you buy another coin first (which is usually Bitcoin).

So if investors decide to get out, they'll get out of altcoins and bitcoin too, hence the whole market will feel that.
And since the value of altcoin's in circulation is much smaller, they feel much heavier such a negative move.

If investors come in, it's a little different. Most will invest only in Bitcoin for being most known and for being advertised as less risky than altcoins.
Altcoins will receive funds later and in smaller amounts, but when that happens, again, since their value is not as big, they may get very nice growth.

And I'll come back to the fact most altcoins are bought by buying Bitcoin first. This imho makes imho unnatural to reference the altcoin price in USD and it should be in Bitcoin. Then you'd see the real fluctuations and may give you something close to an answer.
