Isn't speculation and volatility a problem for Bitcoin?

While a currency needs to have stability to become feasible, an asset doesn't need to obey the same principle. A means of exchange needs to be stable, durable, divisible, and difficult to be counterfeit, on the other hand, an economic asset doesn't need to abide by these same principles. Volatility in Bitcoin may be a problem for someone who uses it as a currency, but it can also be a good thing for someone to speculate. That said, depending on what you want to do with your bitcoin, volatility and speculation can be a good thing.
682  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 6000 coinbase clients hacked on: October 02, 2021, 11:53:47 PM
Another example why using central exchanges is risky. The hackers knew private data of the users. One corrupt employee or one successful hack and bad guys capture your email, home address, phone number and sell it to local criminals who might knock on your door then best encrypted wallets are useless. Cryptocurrencies are designed for peer to peer usage. If you change it into peer to bank to peer then this adds some risks.

https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/coinbase-says-hackers-stole-cryptocurrency-least-6000-customers-2021-10-01/

Back 2 MTGox Syndrome. Everyone knows Central Exchanges are not secure. If it is not for security flaws it will always be human hands. Hackers will also be at the exchanges tails to try and get their way so it's up to companies like Coinbase to better pick their employees and invest in cutting edge security technology to stay one step ahead.
683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is bitcoin an asset or a currency? on: October 02, 2021, 02:26:39 PM
I guess Bitcoin is both. Back in the old days, I tried to use bitcoin as a currency as much as I could, but since it is also a store of value, later I stopped using it as a currency and begun hoarding it. When I look back and remember that I have sold half a bitcoin back in late 2016 for 250€ so that I could pay for a trip to Amsterdam, I get sick... Ended up being a F$%# expensive trip.

Now I see Bitcoin more as digital\virtual gold, so it makes sense to hold it while its value grows. While Bitcoin can be used as a currency, it is not the best option available in the crypto world. It is cumbersome and very expensive to use, so why should we keep using it as a currency?
684  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / About Taproot on: October 01, 2021, 08:57:46 PM
Hey guys,

it has been a while since I've heard about the Taproot upgrade. In my own understanding, taproot will enable a few new options (improvements) to the Bitcoin blockchain. One of these improvements will be smart contract ability. From my point of view, I see this as an important improvement that will add value to bitcoin. Even though this new capability may be kind of restricted, it will allow for tons of new applications to be built upon the BTC blockchain.

What kind of apps do you guys think Taproot will allow to be built on the BTC blockchain? I guess that new 2fa options can be built upon the BTC blockchain. Am I wrong?

687  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Transaction timeframes on: January 09, 2021, 10:06:04 PM
I have made a transaction from blockchain.com well over 3 hours ago and is still pending. I have previously sent lower amounts and had the transaction done in about an hour, and this transaction is still not confirmed. Are you guys experiencing the same kind of trouble? I know that miners will pick lower volume transactions over transactions with lower fees, but I paid above the average $12,50 and it still won't budge... can you guys comment on this pls?
688  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to use the Lightning network? on: December 27, 2020, 01:20:17 PM
I believe you would have read some lightning network threads on this forum. Blockchain wallet does not support lightning network, and you will need to transfer your bitcoin to a wallet that support lightning network before you can start using it. For a noncustodial wallet that support it, the one known for now is electrum wallet. Rath_ created a topic about how you can set up a lightning network on electrum wallets. Check the link below to read about it, and your question is answered.

Electrum Lightning Network walkthrough
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5259973.0

You will need to set up a channel, you will create a channel by sending the bitcoin from onchain to offchain on lightning network supported wallet in which miners fee will be deducted in opening a channel, also miner fee will be deducted when closing a channel, although you can edit the fee for opening and closing of a channel. Aside these, the lightning network transaction fee is negligible.

Thanks for the answer! That was all I was looking to know!

Cheers
689  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How to use the Lightning network? on: December 26, 2020, 10:37:44 PM
Hi guys,

Let's say I have one BTC on Blockchain.com and I want to transfer this bitcoin to a different address, how can I do that using the lightning network. Since fees are so High atm, how can I send a transaction through the lightning network?

Thanks
690  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is a new investment on: October 28, 2020, 03:27:23 PM
Just by checking the price of bitcoin from 2012 on you can acknowledge that bitcoin is one of the best investments of all time. I take it that by 2024 Bitcoin the new low will go around double the current price. Judging by that, not even gold can get an investor that kind of yields. So, yes. It is a good investment and my confidence is such that I have over 50% of my life savings on it!
691  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Yobit DOWN??? on: October 14, 2020, 02:51:29 PM
It works fine on my end. It could be that it's just you. Try accessing the website in a different device and browser--and clean their cookies and cache. Turn off your vpn too if youre using one.

If that doesn't work, I'd restart the router.

Thanks, Its working fine now.

I have checked that Yobit has been down for more than 24 hours now... Anyone of you guys have any idea of what is going on?
693  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen when the last Bitcoin gets mined? on: April 28, 2020, 02:34:42 PM
It is obvious that the price will rise very much. But most likely the last bitcoin will never be mined, some people do not want this to happen.

Well, that's absurd. If the last bitcoin is never mined, it means that the network came to a Halt. If blocks are not being mined, transactions will get stuck and the network will get stranded. I believe that we will probably see the network protocol turn into a new protocol that is sustainable. Though PoS may be the way out, I do not think it is an option as PoS is not a fair protocol because the ones who have more bitcoin will have a lot more chances of having more than the ones who don't or have very few. So, Why should we migrate from cash to crypto if the capitalist concept stays the same. I think that this is a problem that needs to be solved by taking into account the original notion brought by Satoshi, crypto for all
694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen when the last Bitcoin gets mined? on: April 26, 2020, 11:19:47 PM
In theory the last Bitcoin will be mined around the year 2140, unless the bitcoin network protocol suffer a big change.
And you are correct, it's suppose to have only fees to stimulate the "mining process", and if today the fees represents a small amount, in the end BTC can have a much more transaction that will be lucrative

But the most important here is the fact that we have 120 years until the last BTC mined, and with this time BTC could be over, could be another currency, os people will think in another protocols, another way to deal with this process, and BTC can evolve to something totally different, can you imagine the techonology of just 10 years ahead?

Thanks for your answer bro!

Yeah, I suppose we will either see its capitulation after two more halvings or a big change may need to be in introduced into the protocol to ensure sustainability. Thing is after this next halving mining will be a lot less lucrative, but companies are already planning ahead and have new hardware prepared just for that. We will see a lot of changes in the mining landscape after this next halving going on to the next one, that's for sure. I don't know about the price as transactions are still expensive and using bitcoin is still not an easy process for the average Joe. I may agree, that the protocol will change as I see that it will be the only way out of PoW dependency which is not a sustainable process. So, in 10 years time, there will be a lot of changes or Bitcoin may die. I guess these next 10 years will be bitcoin's real stress test.
695  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What will happen when the last Bitcoin gets mined? on: April 25, 2020, 06:35:33 PM
I have been thinking about what will happen when the last Bitcoin gets mined. In my understanding mining will still need to be done, miners will need to keep their machines on otherwise the networks come to a halt. So, when there is no more bitcoin to be mined, if the network keeps the PoW process, miners will be paid by transactions fees right? So this is my question. Looking forward to reading your comments.

699  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Government Could Shutdown Bitcoin? on: November 24, 2019, 11:59:13 PM
I don't think that governments could take down Bitcoin. To do that they would have to shut the internet. Even if the governments criminalize using and mining Bitcoin the price would skyrocket and Bitcoin would become more desirable than ever. Even if the government tries to control Bitcoin price I don't think they would succeed.
700  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: According to Nick Szabo “Bitcoin Could Survive Nuclear War” on: November 24, 2019, 11:55:12 PM
yeah right. if there ever is a Total Nuclear war I don't think Humans will survive. Even the ones who survive would have their days counted. The Bitcoin network would be completely shut as there would be no miners left the process transactions. So, Bitcoin would become useless. Even if the Bitcoin network survived I don't think there will be humans for long to use it.
