681  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What else can you do with an Asic USB Miner? on: September 20, 2013, 06:29:01 PM
If it's possible to use then to vanity gen. A how-to would be nice Smiley

No.  It's not.  Private/public address generation does not look like double-SHA256.

You people need to think outside the box, forget the mining paradigm. Think about what the erupter does, what the algorithm used was designed for, and then think about what else you could apply it to.

Bitcoin was designed to use SHA256 for a very specific operation that shares little with anything other than bitcoin - by design.

They're not usable for anything other than bitcoin-like double-SHA256 operations where you are searching for a target hash value by incrementing a nonce.

I strongly disagree. I can think of one application where they would work quite well, but just prefer not to mention it.
682  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Today, ROI(Return Over Investment) is an unobtainable myth... on: September 20, 2013, 06:23:58 PM
When it comes to Bitcoin mining, ROI ( Return On Investment ) is an unobtainable myth. Please note, That when i refer to ROI I'm referring to any amount over and above your initial investment. The simple truth is that if the mining hardware was cheaper so as to appear to give a reasonable ROI, the demand for the hardware would be so high that if fulfilled it would push the Dificulty up so fast that the anticipated ROI would just disappear.

As has been said many times, the manufacturers can see a return on their investment. People who get the fastest new hardware first might see some return provided that the supply of that equipment is quite limited. Even then it won't take long for their lead to disolve.

This is all because there is a concerted effort to control the number of bitcoins made at any given time. If your new equipment is fast enough, it can work outside those rules for a time until the difficulty compensates. We are all fighting to get our own share of a finite number of bitcoins and the only way to increase our share is to decrease everyone elses. Of course, they then try and increase their share with new equipment to our detriment. Eventually, the amount of resources that any given miner can throw at this will become depleted and their share of the pie will shrink and they will have to accept it.
683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The great "Lost btc problem" on: September 20, 2013, 06:06:14 PM
As long as everyone has the same information, there is not a problem.

I agree. It should also be bloody obvious that, in the situation we are discussing, everybody does NOT have the same information. Specifically, whoever originally had the private keys to old coins knows something that everybody else does not, namely, whether those coins still exist or not. Recycling 'expired' coins *puts* everybody's information on the same level, which is why you ought to approve of it.

Damned if I can see how any of the rest of your post responds meaningfully to anything anyone has written here. It's like one of The Onion's 'Ask Someone who is...' parodies. "Ask someone who just picked up a copy of Milton Friedman's Collected Works in the library", perhaps.

any type of "recycling" undermines the concepts of both Saving, and Investing. Bitcoin ceases to be a means to retain value. My Bitcoins are MINE and if i choose to take them out of circulation that is no one elses business.

You haven't touched your bank account in 20 years, We are going to take your money give it to the people maintaining the banking system.

685  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 55nm USB Miners, as good as it gets? on: September 20, 2013, 05:46:37 PM
I think we will see as the 28nm chips are released and reels of them are made available that "next gen" USB miners will be released..
Although I must point out USB miners are more of a hobbyist thing then a serious mining rig, I went for the DrillBit USB thumbs (3 of them) which can be purchased here: http://www.drillbitsystem.com    They should ROI some time in the next 6 months and may have overclocking capabilities greater then 2.7GH/s.. I am waiting to get my hands on mine to test this theory out!

i went to the site, and followed the paypal route to find out that the prices are all higher with paypal and there is no mention of the backplain being included with two boards like on the BTC page, although you can buy it.

yeah, looks good now.

Wish FAQBot would show back up on IRC.

what is FAQbot?
687  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Could the Bitcoin business model be expanded to super-computing? on: September 20, 2013, 03:15:45 PM
The better way to approach this is to look at a project that would be profitable providing it had vast computing resources and then determine if distributed computing would be a way to provide those resources. Also you need to determine if a supercomputer is required for your task, in some cases a Beowulf Cluster may be sufficient.

I'm sure you could find people willing to sell you their unused computing power if you had a use for it.

odd, i just looked and didn't see this. hmmm....
689  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] US/North American Bitfury sales now open ***full prototype pics*** on: September 20, 2013, 02:17:24 PM
Heh that link doesn't know how to use dd properly - the bs= option is pretty much mandatory if you don't want to take hours doing it.

Then why don't you post how to do it correctly?
Sorry - I don't have a BitFury and they wont even sell me one.
Ask the Bitfury team Smiley

Then why are you even bothering to stir the pot in this thread? If you want them to "give/sell" you something, I'd think that it would be more likely to happen if you were being supportive rather than snarky.
690  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: **US** BitFury Setup Guide on: September 20, 2013, 02:13:38 PM
Get an HDMI to DVI connector/adapter and you can use nearly any modern monitor.  Get a additional DVI to VGA connector and you can use any monitor - they usually bundle this last one with graphics cards....

Be careful here. DVI supports both digital and analog(vga).  if you just buy the cheap connector adapters, although they plug in, they won't convert the digital signals to analog. At least that is what the tech guys at MicroCenter convinced me was true. Spend the $40 - $50 fo a proper HDMI to VGA converter.

Unless Redacted has actually had this work, in which case the people at MicroCenter were full of stoko.

Soo did you send me 3 more silver ones?  Cheesy If you dont know then i guess i have to wait till monday.

Side note. My computer is having issues with 50 erupters i got 2 anker hubs and 7 dlink-dub-h7 hubs. that are all pluged into an anker hub.  i cant figure out if its a hub bad or if its too many erupters. it ran fine with 38 but when i pluged in the other 3 dlink hubs it started not working. any ideas?

I find USB to be very touchy when you start getting to the 50+ device range, especially when chaining hubs.  While it can be done, it gets very touch & go.  I personally preferred to use 4-port unpowered USB 2 hubs connected to the PC, then chained my hubs with erupters off of those.

As for colors:  Most of the recent shipments have been silver.  Blue has been sent upon request when possible.  There's ~200 left to ship as Silver, at which point it will resume being red.  I haven't opened them up to see if these are the older dark red, the lighter red, or the red with the circular rings.

I gave up and ordered a Blue one on eBay. Tongue

I wonder when will the price of H-boards be decreased.  Shocked
who knows - mining is cool and all but don't expect to get ROI with anything on the market today - especially not in btc

ROI, schmROI!  Who really cares at this point?  I have an addiction to feed.   Kiss
It should at least be passing concern.

Never!
694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The great "Lost btc problem" on: September 19, 2013, 10:29:55 PM
Yep haha this is not a "problem" nor is it a "great" problem.

But, the people who want to think it is will never be disueded. These annoying threads will always pop up. And the same people will always chime in.

While merged mining is not supported anymore, is there any chance of getting my remaining NMC's out of the pool?

only if it more than .05 NMC if so, just change the distribution threshold.

It's actually below 0.05 NMC.  Cry

then there isn't really that much value to worry about. I suppose that if Slush ever comes out of his self imposed exile, he'll fix it. in the mean time, think of it as forced saving. Wink

697  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do most people automatically think Bitcoin is a scam/ponzi scheme? on: September 19, 2013, 07:06:18 PM
It is a scam! heh j/k.  as to why people see it as a ponzi scheme, that is because everyone says the value of the coins will continuously go up. You buy your coins at this price, and then you sell them later to the next guy for more money. This depends on there always being someone later to give you your return, hence a ponzi scheme.

People are used to inflation, the value of your money always goes down. A currancy who's value continues to go up? Thats just crazy, can't be true, can't happen.

But, Bitcoin is unique in that it is both a currancy and a commodity with limited supply. So yeah, it's value can continue to go up, as long as people place value on it. As long as you can buy and sell things with it, it will have value.

I'm an Engineer, and am continually amazed at how often Murphy's Law comes into play.

I'll be impressed if Knc shows a video of the chips hashing on a public pool at the advertised speed before the end of the month.

I agree.  Wink

Murphy works overtime.
699  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: September 19, 2013, 06:38:46 PM
Actually, I make a great deal more mining on Slush than I do on BTC guild with my 83 Gh/s ....

If nothing else, you will pay 1% less in fees on Slush than you do on BTCguild.

I've lost track and am confused, did he say he has silver and blue erupters on hand or coming in? I don't want to order before he has them and end up with black or red ones. Huh

All inventory is blue/silver right now.  No red/black could possibly sneak in.

*running off to the store*

5 ordered, that should at least get me some blue ones. Grin

*Comes back and there all silver*  Cheesy Oops. Angry Shocked

WaaaaAAAAHHH!!!!!  Cry Not FAIR, and Not FUNNY! *sniff* *sniff*  Cry

All Silver.... Sad
