Code:
Driver: CAL 1.4.1417 (VM)

Well that's embarassing, Radeon 5830 is supposed to be one of the best tested cards!  Unfortunately I'm not sure how well tested it is with Catalyst 11.6 on either Windows or Linux, which would appear to be the driver you're using?

I'm going to look into this.

There are two things you can try:
  • Safe mode (-S flag), which disables loop unrolling optimizations, but also kills performance.
  • Different versions of the Catalyst driver.  My test environment is 11.5 on Linux.

It worked with the -S flag. Getting 3.12Mkey/s on my 900Mhz 5830. I hope I'm not losing much speed. Still says [50% in 1.8d] for the address I chose with Difficulty: 888446610538 (better than ~50 days that I was getting with my CPU)

If you want me to trust you with bitcoins, then expend the $700 and get a real SSL cert. If you can't afford that, you likely can't afford any of the other security measures required to keep my login information, let alone my bitcoins, safe. Again people, somebody appearing on a streaming video on the internet != trust or credibility. If this community continues to fail in treating bitcoin like real money then no one else will either.

Right... so let me see, I want to store it for nearly free but I want high-end security measures...
Also bitbills aren't an e-wallet, they aren't meant to "keep your bitcoins" anywhere but in the QR code printed in the bill.
This is a community of trust, holding tight against an aggressive internet and unfriendly banking service, as Paypal (who can afford those 700USD+whatever; thanks to the high fees they rake of their customers).

we are talking about a bitbill bank card, not bitbills

There's no difference between the two other than one is made of metal, and the other has a sticker over the private key.
6803  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox / exchanges should confirm bigger transactions by phone/SMS on: August 05, 2011, 07:02:22 PM
Im programming a web that will use bitcoins and what I have done is that the out address does not change until 24hours after the change request has been made. So the user sets an out address, and if someone gets hold of his/her password and tries to change the address it wont work for 24 hours. We also send an email to the user if it has set up an email.

That's actually how BTCGuild works, and you're right, that would remove the need to limit BTC transactions.

Nice, makes it harder to 'hijack' an account and push coins willy-nilly to a bazillion addresses. That combined with transfer limits should do the trick. Optional two-factor notifications would be nice, much like credit card companies do - sending an alert if your balance falls from 'x' amount.

Though on the downside, that will kill MtGox's service as a means of paying people in the go with their phone app.
6804  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alternate uses for bitcoin? on: August 05, 2011, 06:31:42 PM
If you want to be REALLY evil, you can link your game to a specific Bitcoin (one satoshi), and require that people have that satoshi in their wallet to be able to play, thus forcing you to only have one copy. Of course that'll cost a few grand to set up, and will be cracked in half a day.
6805  Economy / Economics / Re: Looking for an explanation for 'Father Currency' Theory on: August 05, 2011, 06:00:59 PM
So, the real question is  - we have no clue what the missing elements of an ideal digital medium of exchange and value transfer really are.

Is this one of them?

Sorry for trolling, but you guys are talking about future and elements, and I just couldn't resist  Grin
6806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Exchange that except Debit Card deposits on: August 05, 2011, 04:14:41 PM
You can do a chargeback with a prepaid card just like with a normal card.

The chargeback rules are enforced by VISA/MasterCard/Discover/etc, not by the issuing bank.

you can't chargeback cash that the exchange pulled out of an ATM.

I had a thought about using prepaid VISA cards you can top off.

Buy such a VISA, write down the info, and send the VISA to the exchange operator. If you want to transfer money into your account, top off the VISA with another method (go to WalMart and deposit cash, or add money to it using another card), notify the exchange, and have them march to the nearest ATM and use your card to withdraw the balance into cash.

It's convoluted, and likely costly, but if you trust the exchange with your money, you can keep more on the card than you want to buy BTC with, and just ask them to take the cash from it for the amount of BTC you want to buy.
6809  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox / exchanges should confirm bigger transactions by phone/SMS on: August 05, 2011, 02:57:29 PM
Another option would be for users to change their own withdrawal limits (within the range already set up by MtGox), with the limit changes not going into effect for 24 to 48 hours after change, and an e-mail sent out warning about the change. That way, even if the daily withdrawal limit is $1000, I know that I don't ever need to withdraw more than maybe $50 a day and can limit all withdrawals to that, and if I need to withdraw a few $100's, I'm willing to wait a day for that to happen. Make a separate limit on Bitcoin, too. Limiting Bitcoin amount by its USD value can have problems if BTC market price drops.

I will hold the Bitcoin for a Bounty.

Would you guys be happy if I use my brand new http://BitBills.com Bank Card?

Do you know BitBills owner with his real name, address, phone number and verified it?

The owner of BitBills appeared in person on The Bitcoin Show, and talked to Bruce, in person, about his BitBills business. Does that count?
6811  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: UABB is a... on: August 05, 2011, 02:00:36 PM

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a home schooled guy setting up a private school using public school education materials... Though he is from Louisville KY. My condolences on that part btw.
6812  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Loans and Lending; The Weakness in The Bitcoin Economy on: August 05, 2011, 01:49:35 PM
Freicoin (like bitcoin) would eventually reach a user base equilibrium and have an increasing value based only based on growth.
But if the deflation rate is lower than the demurrage rate you still have an incentive to spend or lend your money.

Sorry, I was specifically asking why people would start. When Bitcoin was worth $0.001 penny, you could buy thousands of it, hold onto it, and watch it eventually become $0.01, then $1, then $10. Why would people buy $0.001 freicoins if they know that thanks to demurage it'll be worth $0.000 in a short while?

6814  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator [v0.16] on: August 05, 2011, 02:37:31 AM
I'm trying to run oclvanitygen on Win7(x64) with an ATI card, and it keeps going into "compiling..." and then crashing out. Does this not run in Windows?
6815  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bounty for "Tom Williams"'s capture on: August 05, 2011, 02:06:19 AM
wait a second. not sure how the bitbill bank card works... does bitbill hold the wallet.dat? if so then we would have to trust them. is this the case?
maybe we should go for a simply offline wallet stored on a usb. this way we only have to trust Bruce.

A bank card is an offline generated public and private key, engraved on a metal card. No one has the wallet.dat file, since it never existed. After depositing money to the bank card, to get it out you have to scan the private key from the card and import it into a bitcoin wallet. The only way someone can steal bitcoin off of it is if Bruce has it on him, and gets mugged while walking around NY
6816  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: best ewallet on: August 05, 2011, 01:23:52 AM
I'd say at this point, of all the choices, your best one is probably MtGox. Not only have they been through security test hell, and came out on the other side with better security in place, but they've also shown that they, as a company, are willing to take a personal loss to make their users whole again.

Woah, just checking the "I am awesome with dah languages and so can you" youtube clip the first thing that came to my mind, this sounds and plays just like every other scam clip that you can find on the internet that tries to pitch some new great idea of becoming a millionaire, hahahaha.

Amazing.

Strange. Only thing I got out of that video was OMG THE EYEBROWS! THEY MOVE!!!  Shocked Shocked
6818  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Loans and Lending; The Weakness in The Bitcoin Economy on: August 04, 2011, 06:08:46 PM
For speculators, almost the same that bitcoin: it's $0 now, but it will be $97 later.

If I understand it correctly, freicoin will lose value while you hold it, and will provide incentive to give it to someone else (like merchants). Why would speculators, the first people to exchange real money into this experimental money, expect their freicoin to be worth more in the future, if this money is by design supposed to lose value? And isn't them holding currency that appreciates in value the root of your "money interest from holding money" problem?
6819  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] bitcoinX charts - difficulty vs. price on: August 04, 2011, 06:03:02 PM
of course the relation of the two has no direct absolute meaning. You think it's necessary to point that out?

On this forum? Uh... yeah?  Tongue Roll Eyes
6820  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to find "Tom Williams" ... on: August 04, 2011, 05:22:06 PM
Alright, I've had enough of al this nerd bullshit. Let's just go and find this guy and lynch him up by the balls. Angry

Anyone up for a nice week-long vacation in the tropical island of Nevis?

Umm... You know the shell company is in Nevis, and not the actual perpetrator, don't you?

So... no lounging/tanning by the P.O. box then?  Cry
