Chapel Hill Shooter Had Earlier Parking Disputes With The Three Students, Described Himself To Neighbors As “Gun Toting” Atheist…

Media still attempting to spin him as a Right Winger.

The North Carolina man accused of killing three Muslims in a dispute over parking spaces had earlier run-ins with his neighbors, sometimes while wearing a handgun on his hip.

Police were still trying to determine whether religious hatred played any role in the shootings, which shocked the bucolic college town of Chapel Hill and left many residents grappling to make sense of the crime.

Charged with three counts of first-degree murder is Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, who has described himself as a “gun toting” atheist. Neighbors said Wednesday that he always seemed angry and confrontational. His ex-wife said he was obsessed with the shooting-rampage movie “Falling Down” and showed “no compassion at all” for other people.

His current wife, Karen Hicks, said that her husband “champions the rights of others” and that the killings “had nothing do with religion or the victims’ faith.” She then issued another brief statement through her lawyer, saying she’s divorcing him.[…]

Chapel Hill Police asked the FBI for help in their probe, and Ripley Rand, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina, said his office was monitoring the investigation. But Rand said the crime “appears at this point to have been an isolated incident.”[…]

“This man was frustrated day in and day out about not being able to park where he wanted to,” said Karen Hicks’ attorney, Robert Maitland.

The killings were “related to long-standing parking disputes my husband had with various neighbors regardless of their race, religion or creed,” Karen Hicks said.

Police have not said how Hicks got inside the condominium, but on Wednesday afternoon there were no visible signs of damage to the couple’s door, which was affixed with orange stickers warning of biohazardous material inside. A wooden placard bearing Arabic script that translates to “Thanks to God” hung over their doorbell.

A woman who lives near the scene described Hicks as short-tempered.

“Anytime that I saw him or saw interaction with him or friends or anyone in the parking lot or myself, he was angry,” Samantha Maness said of Hicks. “He was very angry, anytime I saw him.”

Hicks’ ex-wife, Cynthia Hurley, said that before they divorced about 17 years ago, his favorite movie was “Falling Down,” the 1993 Michael Douglas film about a divorced unemployed engineer who goes on a shooting rampage.

Fail: Consumers Discover They're 'Insured, But Not Covered' Under Obamacare

Yes, it's time once again for yet another post illustrating a core criticism of Obamacare, and various forms of government-run or -micromanaged healthcare more generally; namely, the fact that "coverage" or "insurance" does not equalcare. Various media outlets have been reporting on this phenomenon for months, including the New York Times, which published another cautionary piece this week:

WHEN Karen Pineman of Manhattan received notice that her longtime health insurance policy didn’t comply with the Affordable Care Act’s requirements, she gamely set about shopping for a new policy through the public marketplace. After all, she’d supported President Obama and the act as a matter of principle. Ms. Pineman, who is self-employed, accepted that she’d have to pay higher premiums for a plan with a narrower provider network and no out-of-network coverage. She accepted that she’d have to pay out of pocket to see her primary care physician, who didn’t participate. She even accepted having co-pays of nearly $1,800 to have a cast put on her ankle in an emergency room after she broke it while playing tennis. But her frustration bubbled over when she tried to arrange a follow-up visit with an orthopedist in her Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield network: The nearest doctor available who treated ankle problems was in Stamford, Conn. When she called to protest, her insurer said that Stamford was 14 miles from her home and 15 was considered a reasonable travel distance. “It was ridiculous — didn’t they notice it was in another state?” said Ms. Pineman, 46, who was on crutches. She instead paid $350 to see a nearby orthopedist and bought a boot on Amazon as he suggested. She has since forked over hundreds of dollars more for a physical therapist that insurance didn’t cover, even though that provider was in-network.

Here is a staunch Obama supporter who's so ideologically loyal that she refused to become upset when her existing healthcare plan was deemed non-compliant and canceled under Obamacare.  She made her peace with paying higher premiums and higher out-of-pocket expenses. She was even willing to live with her pared-down network of doctors and healthcare facilities.  Being personally betrayed by multiple, major presidential promises wasn't enough to shake her commitment to the president or his signature law.  But the long drives to see an in-network provider and the hundreds of extra out-of-pocket dollars flying out of her bank account finally led to "frustration bubbl[ing] over."  She's now a poster child of discontentment with Obamacare, featured in the nation's most prominent left-leaning newspaper.  The story goes on:

The Affordable Care Act has ushered in an era of complex new health insurance products featuring legions of out-of-pocket coinsurance fees, high deductibles and narrow provider networks. Though commercial insurers had already begun to shift toward such policies, the health care law gave them added legitimacy and has vastly accelerated the trend, experts say...For some, like Ms. Pineman, narrow networks can necessitate footing bills privately. For others, the constant changes in policy guidelines — annual shifts in what’s covered and what’s not, monthly shifts in which doctors are in and out of network — can produce surprise bills for services they assumed would be covered. For still others, the new fees are so confusing and unsupportable that they just avoid seeing doctors...by endorsing and expanding the complex new policies promoted by the health care industry, the law may in some ways be undermining its signature promise: health care that is accessible and affordable for all.

Higher costs, "constant changes," surprise bills, outright confusion, and the avoidance of seeking care. Devatasting stuff from the Times, which quotes a healthcare industry professional who rejects the happy talk emanating from the administration and its supporters (by the way, I dealt with and debunked virtually every major point attempted in that Newsweek piece):

“I’m always curious when I read this ‘good news’ that health costs are moderating, because my health care costs go up significantly each year, and I think that’s a common experience,” said Mark Rukavina, president of Community Health Advisors in Massachusetts. While much of the focus in the past has been on keeping premiums manageable, “premiums now tell only a part of the story,” Mr. Rukavina said, adding: “A big part of the way they’ve kept premiums down is to shift costs to patients in the form of co-pays and deductibles and other types of out-of-pocket expenses. And that can leave patients very vulnerable.”

True.  And the premiums are still increasing -- by double-digit percentages for some consumers -- across the board, and are likely to push higher over the coming years.  Of course, we were told Obamacare would significantly slash rates.  And the "coverage" those rates are paying for doesn't kick in until deductibles are exhausted -- if you can find an in-network provider nearby, of course.  This is the "Affordable" Care Act at work. And as millions more Americans lose their employer-based coverage over time (again underscoring a major Obamacare deception), they'll encounter the privilege of navigating the cost and access landmines inherent in the individual market plans offered on the exchanges.  Nevertheless, President Obama again declared the law a success in an interview with Buzzfeed, citing "high satisfaction" (not among the general public, not among those impacted by the law, not among the uninsured) and low premiums (see above).  He also slammed office supply retailer Staples for its policy of strictly capping part-time employee hours at 25 percent to avoid compliance with the expensive employer mandate and its 30-hour rule. (This guideline has been in place for years, Staples says, although the new law seems to have added to the urgency its enforcement).  "Shame on them," Obama said of Staples:

0bama’s State Department Orders Marines To Destroy Their Weapons And Evacuate Yemen Unarmed

UPDATE, 9:57p ET: The Marine Corps has clarified what Marines did under State Department orders in Yemen following the evacuation of the U.S. embassy.

Crew served weapons were destroyed at the embassy, while Marines’ personal weapons were “rendered inoperable” at the airport, and their destroyed components were left behind.

The Marine Corps does not dispute the reporting that CENTCOM is outraged over weapons being rendered inoperable.

Read the full statement below:

The Marine Security Force left the American embassy in Yemen for the movement to the airfield as part of the “ordered departure” with only personal weapons. All crew served weapons were destroyed at the embassy prior to movement. None of them were ‘handed over’ in any way to anyone. The destruction of weapons at the embassy and the airport was carried out in accordance with an approved destruction plan.

Upon arrival at the airfield, all personal weapons were rendered inoperable in accordance with advance planning. Specifically, each bolt was removed from its weapons body and rendered inoperable by smashing with sledgehammers. The weapons bodies, minus the bolts, were then separately smashed with sledgehammers. All of these destroyed components were left at the airport — and components were scattered; no usable weapon was taken from any Marine at Sana’a airport.

To be clear: No Marine handed a weapon to a Houthi, or had one taken from him.

Megyn Kelly’s air quotes in a Fox News update report below suggests that the administration is forcing Marines to parse their statements. The Illusion-in-Chief wants the reports adjusted to “appear” as if the weapons were not really taken or destroyed. But when you render a weapon inoperable—and forced to leave it behind—isn’t that effectively the same thing?

FCC chief prepares to overrule state Web laws

The head of the Federal Communications Commissionis urging his fellow commissioners to block state laws that would prevent cities and towns from building out their own government-run Internet services.

Chairman Tom Wheeler this week will circulate a draft decision to nullify laws in Tennessee and North Carolina, after receiving a request from towns in each of those states.

Cities across the country “should be able to make their own decisions about building the networks they need to thrive,” Wheeler said in a statement on Monday.

“After looking carefully at petitions by two community broadband providers asking the FCC to preempt provisions of state laws preventing expansion of their very successful networks, I recommend approval by the commission so that these two forward-thinking cities can serve the many citizens clamoring for a better broadband future.”
The move to preempt state laws limiting municipal broadband was long expected, and comes amid a broader effort by Wheeler to exert federal authority over people’s access to the Internet.

A victory for local autonomy. States want to be free of federal government restrictions in the same way local governments want to be free from state government restrictions.

The fine print my friend. Always the fine print. I remember how amazing 0bamacare was supposed to be one day, how those billions for shovel ready jobs would boost the economy, not oil or shale gas, how all those billions in green energy would brighten our future, etc. Let's see how many pages of new rules will liberate the local autonomy first. Rules written by unknown faceless bureaucrats once more.

I'll have a wait and see approach, as everything this government and its henchmen say has been lies or full scale doublespeak, dangling a shining object in the face of the gullible 0bomatons, until the next crisis...

Right, I forgot conservatives are only in favor of local autonomy when the issue is right, not as a blanket rule in favor of freedom.

Right, I do not forget liberalism is only in favor of a massive control of local economies, micro managing the issues the free thinkers have left, always under a stealth blanket of rules so the peasants can't see or vote against them until it's too late.

Exactly what is happening with this so called "net neutrality", doublespeak 101. Just like using the word "freedom", not knowing its true meaning...

No Spendulus, I was referring to much nastier stuff. Real pollution from that runaway coal consumption. Like i said; this global warming hullabaloo is a useful diversion from that very real catastrophe in the making.

Talking about like smog in china making people sick? That is a real problem. However I suspect it is one that would go away after about a week if people stopped using coal. I also suspect that coal as an energy source will at some point naturally be replaced by nuclear energy (though not in its current form). I also suspect this is more of a problem with the location of the coal plants than anything else. And finally, the people in these smog ridden cities are probably better off with smog and cheap energy than without smog and without cheap energy.

Well, their coal consumption has been increasing by 10%/year and certainly is showing no signs of stopping, quite the contrary. They have plenty of coal and are busy importing coal. As for the smog I guess that moves around in the atmosphere and isn´t only China´s business. At least this global warming thing is supposed to be a global issue. Strange how real pollution isn´t. But of course it isn´t politically and financially correct and convenient.

The thing you have to consider is that nuclear energy is a million times more energetic than chemical energy. The only reason it isnt profitable now is because we (the species) haven't figured out how to capture it very efficiently. But that will change and there is simply no way that chemical energy can compete in the long term against an fuel source that is a million times as energetic. So yea the trend is up, but it will reverse at some point, you can bet the farm on it.

You're making the assumption that there's competition involved here.

I don't see how i am. I'm making the assumption that the scientists I've listened to were generally right about how much more energetic neuclear energy is. And im making assumptions that society will generally tend to move from less energy dense sources of fuel to more energy dense sources of fuel over the long term. That would even be in the interest of a monopolist.

The "monopolist" likes his dirty energy and the effects it has on his subjects. You're fooling yourself if you believe that he will allow any kind of clean cheap energy.

Wind farming and mega giant solar collecting power stations have killed a lot of birds. Tons of them. I have no idea how many birds were killed by that $250M project (now dead, like the birds)

... and lots and lots of new taxes:

First, President Obama’s plan marks a monumental shift toward government control of the Internet. It gives the FCC the power to micromanage virtually every aspect of how the Internet works. It’s an overreach that will let a Washington bureaucracy, and not the American people, decide the future of the online world. It’s no wonder that net neutrality proponents are already bragging that it will turn the FCC into the “Department of the Internet.” For that reason, if you like dealing with the IRS, you are going to love the President’s plan.

Second, President Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet will increase consumers’ monthly broadband bills. The plan explicitly opens the door to billions of dollars in new taxes on broadband. Indeed, states have already begun discussions on how they will spend the extra money. These new taxes will mean higher prices for consumers and more hidden fees that they have to pay.

Third, President Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet will mean slower broadband for American consumers. The plan contains a host of new regulations that will reduce investment in broadband networks. That means slower Internet speeds. It also means that many rural Americans will have to wait longer for access to quality broadband.

Fourth, President Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet will hurt competition and innovation and move us toward a broadband monopoly. The plan saddles small, independent businesses and entrepreneurs with heavy-handed regulations that will push them out of the market. As a result, Americans will have fewer broadband choices. This is no accident. Title II was designed to regulate a monopoly. If we impose that model on a vibrant broadband marketplace, a highly regulated
monopoly is what we’ll get. We shouldn’t bring Ma Bell back to life in this dynamic, digital age.

Fifth, President Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet is an unlawful power grab. Courts have twice thrown out the FCC’s attempts at Internet regulation. There’s no reason to think that the third time will be the charm. Even a cursory look at the plan reveals glaring legal flaws that are sure to mire the agency in the muck of litigation for a long, long time.

And sixth, the American people are being misled about what is in President Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet. The rollout earlier in the week was obviously intended to downplay the plan’s massive intrusion into the Internet economy. Beginning next week, I look forward to sharing with the public key aspects of what this plan will actually do.

http://www.fcc.gov/document/comm-pais-stmt-president-obamas-plan-regulate-internet

The US is far behind the times in regards to the Internet.

This is a political victory for a free and open Internet.

I'm not sure whether this is bait or not.

It's classic bait, a bunch of fear mongering without specifics. Notice if you click through to the source, and read the whole thing, Mr. Pai's letter states that he will provide specifics about why this plan is so terrible at a later time. (OP truncated that part of the letter, he was too busy reposting all the non-specific talking points.) All this letter was meant to do was rile up the base.

Let me know when Mr. Pai posts something substantive, not a bunch of conclusions without the evidence to support them.

If mr. pai or myself are trying to lie to anyone, why can't the FCC and the people behind those 332 pages be upfront and let anyone read those pages? PDF please, with a search function, not 332 pages of paper toilet scanned at 72 dpi, saved as docx...

I understand, for some, the government can do no wrong. Ever. Unlike happy people posting links of news on their favorite forum, links anyone can read to the fullest by checking the whole article themselves.

Posting a part of a website here is wrong and bad. Letting the government change the whole entire internet, in secret and forever, is good.

I guess some of us already read those 332 pages and know in advance to distrust Wilikon and mr. pai. That is a huge amount of faith on 332 pages called "net neutrality", doublespeak 101...
