6901  Other / Meta / Re: Locking the "Hal" account on: August 30, 2014, 07:35:39 AM
Now that we learnt the sad news, don't you think his account should be locked?

I think it should not be done without the exclusive permission of Fran Finney.

In agreement the account should not be locked unless Fran asks for it to be locked herself.
The possibility Fran has access to all his social media accounts, is high.
There is also a chance that he left a message for us before he died that was entrusted to fran for all we know/went into a cryogenic freezer to be revived if our technology level increases and he wouldn't be happy to see his account locked (One can dream besides being a cypherpunk Hal was an extropian)
http://www.wired.com/2014/08/hal-finney

@ Scott its the reason Satoshi if it was Satoshi left a message on the P2Pfoundationwebsite.

6902  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-08-28] More People Know About Bitcoin, But Few Willing to Use It on: August 30, 2014, 07:27:00 AM
The figure isn't suprising. Most people haven't used bitcoin yet and wont for quite some time, but they probably will in the future. Bitcoin is only really starting to gain mainstream traction and it is still a niche technology. Do the same survey in a few years and we'll see the difference, but surveys aren't usualy relevant anyway.

Adoption is slow but awareness is one step forward, since about half the population is aware of it and a vocal minority of those users use it then it will only be a matter of time before it starts spreading to consumers.
But I guess we are still early adopters in terms of users and moving to mainstream in merchant adoption, in terms of people hearing about it getting mainstream at least.
So two divisions.

Adoption was slow because

- it was unknown by 99.99% of the population
* Now about 30% of the world have heard about it and 51% of Americans
-it was hard to buy
* Can now be bought in many different ways..at convenience stores/cards to load/2 clicks on Xapo + wire transfer/ 3 clicks on exchanges + card details or bank deposit/via sms
-it was hard to use
Really easy to use now  sms /online/card option
- it was not advertised
* very little paid advertising yet as the infrastructure is gearing up to be able to cope with the expected volume. That will be coming soon
-it was not understood as an improvement on fiat
* media has done its job to some extent in demonstrating the advantages and potential risks of cryptocurrency. This has led to interest and investment in the technology
- Institutional investors and VC was almost non existent
* In the previous 18 moinths hundreds of millions of $'s has been invested..due to lead time to create and market their product this will increasingly drive Bitcoin.
- it received a lot of bad press in media
* media reports are generally predominantly favourable these days
- hardly anything/anywhere could be bought or paid with bitcoin
* As of August 2014 almost anything anywhere in the world can now be purchased using bitcoin.
- It was not considered as a major option for the remittance market
* focus on its use for remittances has started since Jan 2014 and is gaining share with 10% + monthly growth ( from a very low base)

All good points there are still a few bugs or kinks or rather real world applications to mull over though
The one about being able to pay for a bill, then tip a waiter, and ride a taxi without needing to wait for your unconfirmed transacton to process is a good one and an obstacle to interoperability with Fiat, Visa or Mastercard is a good example of a kink.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=758927.0

Anyways still following the S-Shaped curve only instead of it focusing on user adoption at this time at a rapid pace its occurring in the field of merchant adoption.

As for it being hard to buy, there are still the exchanges and they take a ton of information to verify with but then there are services like Bitcoin ATMs and quickbt as an example of faster ways to purchase bitcoins.

Anyways still an ongoing work in progress as I mentioned but it is progressing nicely.

* Edit nice added to that list while I was composing my reply ^_^

I'll add one get some good deals with Bitcoin like the Labor Day Sale at Newegg
75 dollars off 300 bucks 150 off 500 bucks is a deal ^^

I just invested my life savings into Bitcoin

Welcome to Bitcoin Blatchcorn
I kid but in all honesty I respect you for it and hope this works out well for you, which it should seems like a no brainer to me if you hold for the longest time.
Merchant adoption, increasing awareness, it just needs a larger userbase which will take more time.
6904  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone please tell me this isn't how transactions always work.... on: August 30, 2014, 07:16:23 AM

Alright, if my recent experience at a bar paying with bitcoin is any indication of how bitcoin transactions work, then mass adoption is very unlikely. Someone please tell me if this is how transactions must work, or it's just a Hive wallet issue.

I was at a bar that accepts bitcoin and wanted to pay my bill with btc. My Hive wallet had about $60 USD worth of coin in it. My bill was $22. The bar has a receiving address for the bill and a separate address for tipping the bartenders. I sent my $22 worth of coin to the first address. Then I went to send a $6 tip to the bartender address and my wallet said that 'Some funds are unavailable. To send this transaction you'll need to wait for your pending transactions to be confirmed'. So I waited. And waited. It took 10 minutes of sitting there (with my friend wondering why in the hell I think paying with bitcoin is so great) before I could tip the bartender and leave.

This is a difficult question, your right having a timing limitation does present a real world problem that I am not sure how would be solved, sending a tip paying for a bill and taking a taxi are real world applications that should be done smoothly.
If possible Hive should allow users to spend up to their max balance without needing to wait for confirmations.

Perhaps a setting to allow unconfirmed txts to be sent as a double spend once the output is released should be improbable if not difficult to execute.

But two payments in one transaction may work but it would require the ability to send more than one address per transaction.
A good puzzle and i'm surprised no one brought it up sooner.

Perhaps having two separate wallets on the same phone, or finding a way to keep different balances all in one overarching user account.
That way an unconfirmed balance can come from one bitcoin address and any change could be taken from another.
6905  Economy / Economics / Re: Ecuadorean Virtual Currency? on: August 30, 2014, 07:02:29 AM
Well we were discussing it in politics as well but this is an economic topic by all means.

In my opinion three ways they can do it, they can go mintchip like the Canadians and try to make a digital currency that way, borrowing from the research they did before it was abandoned.

They can go bangla-pesa on it and go with mobile apps and money being stored that way and see how that goes, and then abandon the US dollar peg if it becomes widely successful for them in the country.

Or they could do something else with it entirely since its still shrouded in mystery, but a Central Bank controlled currency amuses me since their is no cap so how it works will be interesting to see, along with more details.

From politics thread
The new currency was approved, and stateless crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin simultaneously banned, by Ecuador's National Assembly last month.

That's socialism for you: ban what is free and open and make it closed and not free..

6906  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Europe Needs to Embrace Islam - The New York Times on: August 30, 2014, 06:45:35 AM
Once the Muslims get to 25% to 30% of the population, then most of the remaining population will be converted to Islam by force.

Already more than 10% of the schoolchildren in the UK are Muslim. The figure gets to 15% in the Netherlands and 25% in France. I am not saying that it will be a sudden takeover, but gradually Muslims will rule all these countries. It will take some time. Can happen by 2100, if not 2050.

Well since you brought up a diagram for England and the UK I have to joke a bit
It's already to late Bryant they have a porn ban in the UK what do they have to lose
http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2013/07/22/seeks-automatic-blocks-online-porn/bBmAJ8KElAophEAwYu6LqJ/story.html

Although I'm not sure if Camerons porn filter is implemented yet, but it would be one step towards Islam in a sense that increasing censorship of all means of communication would occur in either governmental system.
6907  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-08-27] Newegg starts accepting Bitcoin in Canada on: August 30, 2014, 06:40:19 AM
Let the bug work it's way off and continue to please make purchases from Newegg. Much obliged my friends.

I figured it out I was trying to buy an Xbox 360 and it came bundled with four games as gifts and other things non optional.
Coupon said it didn't work on the gifts although they were more less obligatory
Tried the Xbox One the White Version which is a preorder
Coupon doesn't count preorders to the total even when trying to pay up front so no go.

Tried it with other things couldn't get an Xbox 360 since both are the holiday pack no other choices, but went with the Black Xbox One it works fine so not bad at all.
350 Dollars for a 400 dollar Console can't find a better deal anywhere else since those are fixed priced items.
(Technically its 75 for 300 so at 400 its 325)
(150 for 500 so at 500 its 350)
So another 100 dollar item for 25 bucks  Cool
Good stuff.

Here's their Labour Day email flyer. Clickable blurb for BTC at about mid-page:

promotions.newegg.ca/NEemail/promotion/Aug-0-2014/LabourDayWeekend29/index-landing.html

I saw the blurb and was tempted to buy something
Had a bit of a problem getting the offer to work though but I was happy to see the option there for people to use it and that it is the 7th panel on the main page.
75 Off 300 150 off 500
And it works on gaming consoles the problem is that I find that its 75 on 500 and does not work on 300 for some reason, although it might be because they don't like Gift additions even if you can't unselect them or preorders.

guess the author's been smoking something spectacular.

Well I want to know where she got some of that from

Anyways thanks for the picture article saved some reading time, so basically Terrorist Islam is not all Islam
Normal Islam is ok but not exciting enough
Problem she asks we need a more radical ideology solution =  Bitcoiners and Cypherpunks  Wink

Either that or assimilation, if they want to live by your ideals go back to your own country I guess.

The Islamic State of Iraq recently issued educational regulations for the Caliphate. Music, art, sports, social studies, history and psychology are now banned in the classroom.
Translated by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi:

So were looking at a want to be North Korea, well to be honest even the DPRK is not that extreme in music its classical, in art Korean only, social studies is the study of their great leader, history is the Korean War and their wonderful victory and psychology is satisfied just like 1984 with the aim of getting to work in Pyongyang.

In other words if ISIS gets control of the world women will wear Hijabs ears will be considered too revealing and we will end up back in the stone ages, but without the pillaging lol.

That one was a bit weird I get the Sharia part though but banning the math seems weird.

ISIS also banned weed and burned a field of marijuana plants in Syria this past week.
(Good riddance we don't want any bees that are high on the plants and producing THC honey  Wink)

Arent they going to come out with a financial statement shortly? when they will probably make a statement at the same timen

Hmm is it time for a quarterly financials report
Last one I recall was
Cash flow from Feb 28, 2014 to May 27, 2014:
So May 28 --- Aug 28
Your right it might be about that time but I didn't see any announcement about it.
6913  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Julian Assange Announces Plan to Leave Ecuadorian Embassy 'Soon' on: August 30, 2014, 04:53:01 AM

That may actually be correct, if his group is monitoring the traffic and movements of people who enter and leave the embassy and what they do when they monitor them, then it makes sense to use a good sample size and then determine which method is the most efficient one to escape.

That or Assange builds a tunnel sneaks into the sewage system comes out outside the embassy and then takes a ride safely away from there with no one the wiser.
Sounds like The Great Escape ^_^.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Escape_%28film%29

I would doubt that he would try to escape via tunnel systems as this would not allow him to use the cover of the ecuador government. If he were to be captured while traveling with an official convoy then the ecuador government could say that his arrest would be the same as the government arresting one of their diplomats while he would be more or less on his own if he tried to escape via tunnel systems.

Well I was thinking if he could get away in an Ecuadorian Convoy waiting outside the building then use the tunnel systems to get into a diplomatic limo it would work, the way they would determine the best way to approach it is by monitoring the monitors and their patterns when vehicles come and go to the embassy, simply put if they are monitoring the movements of the embassy but not what is occurring out of it then it makes more sense to do a transfer outside even if near the embassy.

That said if he wants to escape or leave the embassy some time soon he will have to take the risk even if its with a diplomatic convoy of getting arrested, either that or surrender and make a plea deal.
Its a tricky situation though for him since he could just stay in the embassy but how does he get out of it.

6915  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NSA has it's own spy search engine, there is no more privacy on: August 30, 2014, 03:08:13 AM
The best protection we have is the huge ammount of data that is produced, most of them useless.

We can stay more or less anonymous, if we manage to avoid things that would attract attention to the surveilance agencies

Well for now the main problem is when Big Data sets can be converted into measurable relevant data
If it can filter out all the noise then we have a problem.
Most of that data is social data so once they are able to get everyone's information innocent or not it brings the idea of anonymity to uncharted waters.
6916  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Julian Assange Announces Plan to Leave Ecuadorian Embassy 'Soon' on: August 30, 2014, 02:42:21 AM
I don't understand why he announces he's about to move. He should have left without a fuss, now there will be people looking for him.

I am also interested why they would make a press announcement
Perhaps he made a plea deal but it is worth watching how this turns out.

Also be it as it may, he may be better off in Russia if he can sneak his way over there.
I would doubt that he made a plea deal. One possibility is that he he announced his pending departure to see how cars leaving the embassy and and planes leaving the country are looked at by the local government. Ecuador is one of the countries that Snowden wanted to exile to but was unable to make it, so it may be a distraction for him to be able to leave.

That may actually be correct, if his group is monitoring the traffic and movements of people who enter and leave the embassy and what they do when they monitor them, then it makes sense to use a good sample size and then determine which method is the most efficient one to escape.

Hello Reader,

Will TV commercials, billboard advertising and sponsoring events or racecars raise the value of BTC or LTC?

If you have an another Idea please reply. I am thinking of realising one or more ideas.

What will raise the value of LTC or BTC is adoption that said a car tour or events that utilize these types of technologies and give away stuff to new users to learn more or to sign up and try Bitcoin services would be the best way to get it to grow more.
6918  Economy / Economics / Re: Why we give respect to Rich and no-respect to poor? on: August 30, 2014, 02:29:46 AM
hi actually i m not a newbie but newbie in forum Smiley

people love rich and give all respect to them if rich wants they give them ther A** without any reason but the reason behind will be money..

the community only love rick why not poor ,,, poor deserve`s more respect ... poor have much more peace in them expect rich ...

if rich wants help everyone help them if poor wants no one help expect few people

please give me some predictions Smiley

Well the reason is that they had to do something to get that money usually
And well you don't suck up to a poor person you want to emulate the rich one.
Although in a sense only the rich can afford to help the poor as the poor can't do much to help others as they struggle in their day to day lives let alone have time to be concerned for others.

So in the end the rich may not by happiness but the poor will wallow in it, unless they get out of that and then are able to help others as well.
We start the journey together life takes us along many paths but these challenges help us to grow and its how we handle them that levels the playing field between those who succeed and become rich in the future and those that don't and only can dream of it.
6919  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will plummet to $10 by first half of 2014 on: August 30, 2014, 02:04:27 AM
If it had crashed to $10 there would be half users alive in this forum.. Smiley

That would be a significant amount more than in 2011 when it was around that price
But it would also make me wonder what was the system that superceded bitcoin or if we would still be here at that time Smiley.
6920  Economy / Economics / Re: When will the USA pay their debts, if ever? on: August 30, 2014, 01:59:47 AM
There are 2 ways:

-You stop printing money magically and refuse to pay the debt = you get fucked (argentina)
-You keep playing the printing money game and pray to god shit doesnt crash = (USA)

Yep, that summed up my points more or less in not so many words.
Either keep trying and get your country to scale, then keep playing that game till it crashes or default start fresh and hopefully get a fresh start without all the entanglements.
