6981  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [May 2021] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: May 10, 2021, 06:58:14 AM

That's something a lot of people miss. Even if they are from the same address each UTxO has to be signed individually which takes up a lot of space.
There is an argument to change from signing individual UTXOs, someone spending coin would need to sign an address plus a nonce. This would encourage address reuse, which reduces privacy, and would make CPFP more complex, but would increase transaction throughput. It would also eliminate change addresses, which would also reduce privacy. It would be required that nonces are confirmed in order, but two nonces could be confirmed in the same block.

I am not sure, but won't Schnorr/Taproot fix this too? Or is it only wishful thinking from my side?
6982  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: May 10, 2021, 06:46:48 AM
And 10/10 for Mercedes strategy again

Yep, Mercedes strategy was great and flawlessly executed. On the other hand it was ugly what they did to Bottas and I think that they wanted to prove a point for some internal dispute. Maybe it's indeed his last year at Mercedes.
I'm sorry for Max, he did pretty well and the early overtaking was a great move. Unfortunately the team didn't think farther than that.

I can't say about Leclerc that it's better than Max or not, but I can tell that after the fiasco cars from last year(s), now the Ferraris are surprisingly good.
Sergio had a good race, but he has to become soon a constant threat for Mercedes, else the team results will not get to look better than this one.
Sainz does good and still improving, I'm happy for him, despite the fact he runs now for Ferrari  Smiley
McLaren was disappointing this week-end.

Alpha Tauri, Alpine and Aston Martin had big words at the start of the year, but they are all more than disappointing. The fight for 3rd place on the podium seems to take place only between Ferrari and McLaren.
6983  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old MultiBit Wallet assistance - Classic (I think) on: May 08, 2021, 01:28:16 PM
There has been a MultiDoge too back then. I don't know how difficult would be to find it and also try to load up the wallet, still, it could be another direction...
6984  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon musk is for crypto or just for attention to boost Tesla, SpaceX? on: May 08, 2021, 10:02:13 AM
He has the money, he has the time and he has found out crypto, hence he has a "new toy" he enjoys.
While Bitcoin is a good store of value and a great investment vehicle (which will make Tesla look profitable even if they don't meet the shareholders' expectations as car maker), Dogecoin is a coin with big community and huge amount of hopium, which can be played. I don't know if Elon does all this pump game, I think that somebody else is profiting that Elon has this new toy and Elon just doesn't mind, since he's also on profit because of this.
About what he says.. it's rather unpredictable, isn't it?  Grin
6985  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone who will wear my signature and avatar on: May 08, 2021, 09:51:35 AM
Since Bitcoin is back on the rise and I'm in a good mood, I'll also wear your avatar and text for free, for a while. Maybe it helps. And maybe it also opens the eyes here and there for an advertising business model on avatars and personal texts, which are visible in more places than the signatures  Smiley
Just since it's for free, I won't promise for how long I'll do this. It may be days, weeks or more, but no promises.
6986  Economy / Economics / Re: SEC Chair Says a Lot of Crypto Tokens Are Securities on: May 08, 2021, 09:44:23 AM
Gary Gensler, the newly appointed chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, told Squawk Box on Friday that "many" cryptocurrencies are originally securities:
"As long as an asset class is classified as a security, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has a lot of authority over it. "A lot of cryptocurrencies, which I don't think should be called that, are actually securities."

I would not be surprised if this is indeed happening, however, I see some problems:
1. Why all this has to be as declarations instead of clearly helping out the "culprits" into doing it right or fine them? Because in the current way it's just cheap talk against crypto scene.
2. Isn't it a bit late to notice and handle this? And I'm back to cheap talk at TV.
3. Are there any proper guidelines to allow a coin/whatever get properly categorized? (I clearly don't know, but I somehow doubt it).

So.. yeah... politics...

Edit: I've found out that SEC did actually act too, just I didn't know. See here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5336088.msg57155143#msg57155143
6987  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum privacy questions on: May 08, 2021, 09:36:26 AM
Since Electrum relies on 3rd party servers, you don't know what is in the code ran on the server (remember when they added the links to the phishing Electrum?). It clearly has all it needs to spy on you if the server owner want to.
I guess they've fixed backdoors of the software since then. Yes, I've read about that incident, much worse than just ruining your privacy.

Yes, they've fixed the part where the server can send anything as alert.
But that's "ancient history" now. My point was that in the same way, any code can run there as long as it meets the requirements to identify itself as Electrum server. And if somebody wants to add privately some "chain analysis" code on top of the official Electrum server code, it can be done and you'll never know.
6988  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum privacy questions on: May 08, 2021, 09:16:18 AM
I was wondering if there's a script inside the source code that reveals to the electrum nodes that you're the owner of these addresses. If you are and decide to broadcast a transaction through an electrum node, you surely ruin your privacy, at least to that specific node. But if you don't broadcast anything, can they (or it if you're running with --one-server) see that you're the owner of these addresses or you query the balances same like on a watch-only wallet?

Additional questions:
  • How do you know if a node uses SSL? I guess that if it does, it's better for your privacy since your ISP can't see that you're transferring a signed transaction.
  • Wouldn't it be better if you broadcasted to a Bitcoin node directly? Just like when you run Bitcoin Core. The Bitcoin node can't know for sure if that's your transaction or if you're sharing transaction(s) from your mempool peer-to-peerly.

Since Electrum relies on 3rd party servers, you don't know what is in the code ran on the server (remember when they added the links to the phishing Electrum?). It clearly has all it needs to spy on you if the server owner want to.
So most probably the code doesn't have anything for spying, but it can be added. Or the info from logs may also give quite some info.

And yes, best would be to broadcast to your own server on top of your Bitcoin node, although then you may no longer actually need Electrum and just use Bitcoin core.

You guys aren’t into itcoin?  Huh

I'm pretty sure that's just a cheap Italian imitation of physical bitcoin.

In primul rand, cred ca-ti "racesti gura" de pomana.

They'll be able to change the redirection whenever they want.

They'll be able to also replace the website with a phishing clone of Binance or Bitcointalk.
So I'd be more wary about this. Even if it's harmless once, it can too easily turn evil.
6992  Other / Meta / Re: #meritislife: how to be notified on a smartband of merits and mentions on: May 07, 2021, 09:12:33 AM
Glad it is all sorted now.
Waiting you picture for the "hairy wrist gallery".

Regarding the double notification, I can't advise on that, never happened. Might be an issue with the bot?

It's not sorted, but I don't understand the rule yet.
I don't think that's the bot, since in the actual Telegram I get the information/text only once.

Edit: and the requested picture is here:
6993  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: High transaction fees on: May 07, 2021, 08:52:45 AM

Please go fishing with your BSV trolling to altcoin topics.
I can't help but enjoying your perfect timing: you talk about high fees when 2 sat/vByte transactions are mined.
It shows your degree of understanding on what you're talking about.
6994  Other / Meta / Re: #meritislife: how to be notified on a smartband of merits and mentions on: May 07, 2021, 08:08:10 AM
I am stating the obvious here but: did you updated the miBand firmware to the last version? You can do that trough the accompanying app.

As soon as the companion app got installed and the band got paired, the update has started. I don't even remember if I had to approve/acknowledge/click anything for that Cheesy
Just I don't remember which companion app did this because I've installed Xiaomi Wear, then Mi Fit, then Xiaomi Wear again.
So I think I have the last. I have V1.0.0.34_android160

An interesting update:
* a post of mine was removed because an user got nuked -> 2 notifications
* your post where you quoted me -> 1 notification (!?)
Obviously, both are after the stop/start of notifications.
6995  Other / Meta / Re: #meritislife: how to be notified on a smartband of merits and mentions on: May 07, 2021, 07:48:43 AM
Anyway, I am mumbling about upgrading to the Mi6, just because... you know.. this thread!

I can't advise on that, I usually buy stuff when I need it or the old breaks, not because it's new (or new version) Cheesy

Are you using an iPhone or an Android paired with this band? It never happened to me with both Mi Band4 and 5.
Try deselecting the  notifications and turn those back on, probably the phone is sending twice to the band because two channels are activated.

I have Android phone, an older Redmi, so the compatibility should be great (I hoped). Just it's Android 8.1
I've stopped the notifications for Telegram and one came onto phone and not band - good.
I've started the notifications again on the band and .. they're get doubled again.

Oh well, if anybody finds out why, please write and add my name so I get notified (twice!).
6996  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: i lost my passphrase for my trezor wallet, how can i get it back ? on: May 07, 2021, 07:42:55 AM
am worried they might fall to the wrong hands ! so i need to change the passphrases which i no longer remember, how to do that ??...

You don't change your passphrase, you create a new wallet from a new passphrase and send there.

One variant for the steps is pretty well described in mk4 post.
I don't want to confuse you more, but it may worth considering Tails OS for the temporary wallet, since it's on USB stick with Electrum already installed (although it's not easy peasy if you're not computer savvy, you have to write down a temporary seed and keep in mind that's temporary, it would be wonderful to temporarily use the Tails as cold storage and there are a lot of transfers and reboots necessary).

On the other hand, if the funds are consistent and you're not computer savvy, the safest course of actions is to buy a second hardware wallet and transfer there. Of course, this time write down safely the seed.
6997  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Transaction fees: send or wait on: May 07, 2021, 04:57:51 AM
I'll use a more appropriate TX fee (I had been intending to make the TX fee 10 sats, but wasn't paying attention that it was just one sat).

Maybe another time. This 2 sat/vByte tx was confirmed 3 blocks ago. And  it's not even Saturday Smiley
6998  Other / Meta / Re: #meritislife: how to be notified on a smartband of merits and mentions on: May 06, 2021, 01:26:56 PM
I've just got Mi Band 6 less than a week ago. I like it, but I guess that I'm missing something in the settings.

The messages from the Telegram bot come to my band twice.
WhatsApp messages are, on the other hand, not doubled.
Any idea why's that?

PS. Thanks for the tutorial!
6999  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Transactions Fee Are More Expensive Than Ever on: May 06, 2021, 12:51:08 PM

I didn't intend to be arrogant. But when corporations already store value of billions in Bitcoin, you complaining and coming with an example of 16$ is weak, sorry.
Especially as anybody knows (or I thought they know) that too many small inputs make a transaction big, hence more expensive. That means that withdrawing/putting away values like 16$ are not feasible for HODL/store and it makes more sense to wait until the value gets much bigger (let's say over 100$, imho, to keep it in $, and that by gathering more bitcoin, not by waiting a new ATH), no matter what the transaction costs "now".
Hence, in this context, of storing, 16$ is too small to make sense.

All in all, if you want to use Bitcoin as store of value you don't care almost at all about tx fees because you HOLD, not transfer funds on the daily basis, and when you transfer you do that with bigger amounts at a time and with low priority fee.
7000  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Taproot proposal on: May 06, 2021, 12:37:33 PM

I don't understand what is Poolin doing. They signal Taproot in certain blocks and don't signal it on other blocks.
I guess that they have more than one pool and not all those are upgraded in the same way, but I still find it odd...

How much time does it typically take before those other miners start to signal for an upgrade? Do they take their time until the last, maybe 500 blocks, before we see 90%? Or can anyone tell that for this round, it is slow?

Switch to the main tab and it'll tell that we're already late for this 2016 blocks period, since over 90% of the blocks should be signaled and it's not longer possible.
Somehow we should rise awareness, maybe more pools join before the next difficulty period.
