What's with all the $80.80's on there ?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Chaikin's banana flow index. If the banana curves upwards, we're going up, if the banana curves downwards, we're going down. Very simple, very reliable (5 sigma).

Like it. Cool

Bitcoin has encountered a few banana skins in its time and so having those on the radar should definitely mitigate future trading misery.

Which brings us back to the original point: you don't base your decisions on a single indicator. The end.

I'm all ears.

Please post refined appraisal incorporating the "other indicators"   Wink
6984  Economy / Speculation / Re: A break-out? on: May 30, 2014, 04:36:05 PM
And in that time that it takes to turn and change course, Bitcoin could be down 50%.

That doesn't matter because we're talking about long term trends.

If you're investing long term, you don't care if it goes down 50% as long as it comes back up again. That 1-Week MACD histogram doesn't guarantee that the price won't drop by 50%, but it does guarantee that such a move would be the equivalent of swimming against a very strong tide and is likely to be swept away by same tide in quite a short space of time.
6985  Economy / Speculation / Re: A break-out? on: May 30, 2014, 03:49:49 PM
It's bad enough that it's such a lagging indicator - you should not pre-empt it on top of that. 'I believe the lagging indicator is going to do THIS in 2 candles from now so I should act immediately' - at least wait until it actually happens and is confirmed. Do not forget all the traps that occured previously involving the 1D MACD and even once or twice with the 3D MACD where it went up but wasn't confirmed or was up for 1 candle and went back down.

It's not a lagging indicator.

Trading school books define it as such because the MACD algorithm uses historical data to calculate it's output, but the histogram in particular is not displaying a historical property of the market, it's displaying a current one, and the bigger the chart timescale the more current the indication. (i.e. the 5 minute MACD has a huge relative lag but the 1-week has almost none).

The indicator uses the fourth or fifth derivatives of the moving averages and the histogram shows the difference of these, so we are looking at semi-permanent, well established properties of the market (at least in the long range reports) that transcend particular positive or negative fundamentals. It most definitely is something that can be used to "pre-empt" trends.

I agree that waiting for confirmation is important, but even that is a hazy area. Classically it's where the lower and higher order derivitaves cross, but on such a long term chart that point becomes more of a formality. In that chart right there you've got ample confirmation of very fundamental slowing of selling momentum and increase in buying momentum over a sustained period and against a diversity of news both favourable and unfavourable. That kind of momentum isn't going to turn around anytime soon.
6986  Economy / Speculation / Re: A break-out? on: May 30, 2014, 03:18:31 PM
Never rely on one indicator alone. Especially not the MACD.

LoL. That's kind of like saying don't just rely on your ears to tell you a 150mph train is coming round the bend in 20 seconds.

That isn't just *any* MACD indicator. It's a 1-week one. What that means is that it isn't predicting what's happening, it's TELLING you. That kind of momentum doesn't turn around in a few days - or even a few weeks - unless Bitcoin blew up technically.

What's more, the selling that went on during the past few months was in spite of the fundamentals, not because of them. It happened against a background of all kinds of bullish news such as the overstock adoption, senate hearings, Winklevoss ETF progress through the regulatory framework.

ok, there's been some negative stuff as well, but it's all short term and largely inconsequential to Bitcoin's adoption - Gox going bankrupt, malleability histeria, China trying to put their finger in the dyke etc.

So you've had 4 months of downward pressure from 3 short term sources....

[1] - the correction from December's pump

[2] - China regulating their FIAT gateways

[3] - F*ck ups like Gox and the malleability scare

... against a background of growing favourable fundamentals, not least of which is the Winklevoss ETF which will open a massive Fiat gateway into the market (the biggest of which is currently BTC-e and Coinbase  Undecided )

All this has had the effect of compressing a coiled spring which is what you're seeing in the MACD histogram there. There isn't any better indicator to demonstrate the aggregate effect of these market influences because you're seeing higher level derivatives of the selling momentum over a long long period, so it runs deep.

It might change course, but only as fast as the world's biggest supertanker at full speed.

6987  Economy / Speculation / Re: A break-out? on: May 30, 2014, 02:47:31 PM
I think the 1-week MACD histogram from Bitcoinwisdom tells all anyone needs to know about whats happening with this breakout.

It's permanent, and has been building since early April when the rate of selling started to slow. The correction from December's all time high is now fully in and IMO this is going well northward over the summer.

We haven't had such a bullish set of circumstances since last October.

atcsecure claims to be a skilled coder yet he needs to hire loljosh to dev his coin. He's a phony.

Actually, he's a hardware guy.

If you look back at his posting history, his main background interest and expertise is in building hardware platforms for mining.

He's mined lots of different coins and has built himself a mining farm.

This also checks out with his LinkedIn profile (if that's the guy). If you look at the areas of activity in there it's hardware / firmware.

I'm sure that in itself involves a lot of C++ coding so I'm not saying that it doesn't conflict with any claims of him being an experienced coder.

Despite that, people need to get it through their heads that this isn't a technology race. It's an adoption race. If DRK ends up doing what it says on the tin and doing it reasonably well, that will be enough to consolidate its dominance in this sector.

The absolute worst coin you could trade if you didn't want governments to pay attention to you is

DRK

Don't kid yourself that regulators give a damn about whether cryptos have transparent blockchains or not  Wink

I think DRK will able to set its feet on solid land if it holds its advantage over BTC for some amount of time, let's several months.
But if BTC makes possible for true anonymity in the near future, what advantage will DRK have?

I don't think Bitcoin will ever be anonymous.

There is no reason to. The whole point of Bitcoin is that it's transparent and the whole point of Darkcoin is that it's opaque. One isn't better than the other, they just serve different requirements.

Bitcoin's whole infrastructure revolves around it's transparent block chain. There are thousands of merchants now using it. Apart from anything else, Bitcoin would have to go right back to basics and start again if it wanted to implement anonymity. It would loose all the confidence it's gained and all the consolidation it's done over the past few years.

Not ever happening I think.

I would consider a small investment in these coins when they prove themselves more and put out something...even a beta...that works. That is when I bought into DRK. Sorry but I don't make a habit of investing in vapor.

Well, looks like you made the right decision and I didn't.

There's a 27 BTC shot coming out of XC @ 0.002 which will probably blow that support level to kingdom come. So just ignore my advice for now. I'll just have to put my loss down to not taking my own advice about panicking.

Also NOTE: Please people resist the temptation to invade the XC thread in order to rub their noses in it. Nobody likes being on the receiving end of FUD and it'll just revisit us during the next correction. Markets are doing a good enough job of retribution.

Truce required and a return to industrious dialog  Wink

To all such preachers of witchcraft, please provide screenshots with suggestive lines scrawled on to illustrate your point. Most forum chart voodoo is cherry-picking patterns that fit pet theories. If you don't even show the charts, this will just be assumed.

I agree, and apologise for not posting illustrations. The problem is it just takes so much time.

You've got to command-shift-4-spacebar the chart, get it into photoshop, clip the right bit, move the scale up so it's got some context, get the markings scrawled on, then command-alt-shift-S it, upload to tinypic or imgur, get the right tagged link for this forum, preview it to check it's not spam-blocked etc etc

Right now my Mac is in reformat mode after being zapped so it wasn't possible anyway.

Will try harder next time  Wink

Ouch.

After reading all the FUD in this thread I induldged myself in a spot of XC as a hedge for my DRK holdings. (My religious tendencies don't extend to cryptocurrency investments).

In the space of an hour, I've already lost 20%. Despite that Mintpal reports my overall holdings UP, and this appears to be due to the panic buy-back going on in DRK.

Take note folks - that's how to operate this game.

We can all be friends and still favour our coin of choice. Just hedge your preference with a 10 or 20% stake in the 'competitors'. If everybody does this there'll be a lot less fear and loathing and a lot more constructive co-operation and dialog amongst the various flavours of coin.

If your a DRK fan (applies to this thread) go 70% DRK, 20/10 Monero / XC. If your an XC fan go 70% XC, 20% DRK 10 Monero etc.

For me, DRK is unlikely to be seriously challenged right now. I say that because will, commitment and a huge market prescence (by the dev and community) generally count for more than anything else. Technical shortfalls can always be revised and addressed along the way.

All the same, I think it's far better to have constructive interaction with other communities rather than all this nonsense FUD posting. If everyone takes out hedges in each other's coins it will go a long way to mitigating the fear of being 'left behind' backing the wrong horse.

You'll still be able to back your favourite but won't be left out if others are successfull.

6996  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: May 29, 2014, 02:04:42 PM
ok folks.

Looks like I may have erred a bit on the pessimistic side with my market technicals earlier.

4 hour chart momentum (has roughly a 2 day cycle for DRK) is shortly turning up and the twelve hour (has roughly a weekly cycle) has put in it's first clear block on the MACD histogram.

What this means is that retro-thrusters have been deployed and we may not be going all the to 6 after all, which was my worst case scenario.

What's more, the buzzards are once again hovering over that order book as demonstrated by the manic hoovering up of what little chunks of meat were left from yesterday's banquet.

If your not done dumping now then I'd forget it although don't be surprised if we go down a bit a few times over the next few days just to finish painting in the other half of the punchbowl in the 12 hour chart.

After that the correction will be fully in.

I don't think your 30 sec pizza problem is related to that. The site heavily relied on client-side scripting and the more data there was, the worse it got. In the end it really made my entire system lag even when it was running in a none active tab. And that's on an i7 4700.
There's nothing wrong imho. He's most likely just implementing it in a different way now, because recently it wasn't really usable. Maybe it would already be enough to cut out the fancy redraw animations.

Thanks for all the contributions on this.

What happened to me was it hung up in Firefox. Then Safarii.

Later, when I cleaned everything (Reset safari, clear firefox cookies, run Diskwarrior), it kind of cleared, then started again whenever I went into Firefox - even if I didn't access that page.

I've had to reformat. My machine is irrecoverable. Haven't lost anything, just time, but it is clear as a sledghammer that is started as soon as I accessed that site. As I say, I'm not making any accusations - it's a very interesting site, done in good faith I'm sure, I'm just bringing this to folks attention because I'd like to use it again and for it not to lock up my machine once I've spent the next 48 hours rebuilding it  Wink

Does anyone know what happened to the masternode stats site ? (http://drk.poolhash.org/darksend.html)

Whenever I accessed it during the last few days it almost hung both my browsers.

Since then, my Mac's totally screwed - spinning pizza every 30 seconds for about a minute. Tried all kinds of clean up tools including Diskwarrior. I'm going to now reformat and re-install the whole system (something I was wanting to do anyway but 'want' has now become 'need').

There was something wrong with that site. Now it seems to be down.

I'm not suggesting it was malicious - may just have been dodgy Javascript, but I haven't noticed anyone else complaining about it. It was a usefull stats page but I'm terrified to go near it now once I wipe my machine.

(I didn't have any wallets or passwords stored on that machine by the way - they're all offline in an encrypted drive.)
