Just some notes regarding memory usage of compilation.
It's possible to compile it with 1G RAM. Just remove -j2 switch from make call.
It's also possible to compile it with virtually any amount of memory using ggc-min-expand and ggc-min-heapsize parameters. It's the only alternative for VPSes without real (and big) swap. However, just like with using swap it will be extremely slow.

Also, if you have plenty of memory and CPU with more than 2 cores you can set -j switch to number of cores you wanna deploy to speed-up compilation process.
