7002  Other / Meta / Re: Proposal: Rename the "Press" board to "Spammer of the Month" board on: November 15, 2021, 07:46:06 AM
Because, like Bitcoin Discussion, many good members ignore the board entirely because it is overrun with spammers. Get rid of the spammers, and they will slowly migrate back again.
You can always create self-moderated threads, moderate them however you want, and delete everything you don't want to see there without having to explain to anyone why you are doing that. The forum supports local rules, so if you have your only blacklist, you can even add rules that prevents those you consider spammers from participating in discussions. That way you will engage a better group of people in discussion or your topics will die because members will be afraid to post in them. Ignoring a whole sub-board doesn't seem like a proper solution.

How about moving any topic created from a site with "coin" in their URL and more than a few topics per month to one thread in the Press section dedicated to that site? Call it "Press releases from Coinxxxxxx.com" and it stops flooding the board with useless topics.
It's a good suggestion. If links from that site appear 5 or more times in the first 1-2 pages in the Press board, a dedicated thread just for that news site should be created. But will admins be interested in moderating it that way? We should get some feedback from them...

What we do need is a radical change which will retain free speech, but will, alongside, discourage those users from shitposting.
I don't understand the connection between free speech and bombarding the forum with low-effort posts. A copy-pasted article is a low-effort post, especially one that doesn't include a personal opinion or additional analysis of any kind. Spam and low-effort posts are against the rules and should be deleted.

But there is another reason why admins might be looking the other way.
The forum culture is generally dying out. People don't want to write on online forums as much as they did before. The press board (spammy as it is) still generates traffic in the same way that the altcoin boards do. The admins might not be willing to put another nail in the coffin by deleting a massive amount of threads in the altcoin and press boards and start banning more people. After all, "all publicity is good publicity".
7006  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbooks often offer different odds for the same type of bet on: November 14, 2021, 06:48:42 PM
I wonder if it is really possible to find such anomalies (within the same bookmaker) on the basis of which it is possible to place bets where the player has an advantage?
All the examples I posted show odds for different markets from the same bookmaker. Right now as I am writing this, I am looking at the Luxembourg - Rep. of Ireland football match and the -0.5 AH on Ireland is 1.97. At the same time the full-time market odds for an away win on Ireland is 2.06. As you can see, that's quite a difference.
7007  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to spend smerits? on: November 14, 2021, 06:14:02 PM
But why? Is this under the assumption that sMerit is scarce? I may be biased being a Merit source, but if scarcity would be a problem, theymos can easily increase the total supply. I don't consider sMerit scarce, so if the post deserves it, I don't mind if it doesn't trickle down from there.
Not scarce but they are limited. Even if your supply of 850 merits is a significant one, it's still a limit. If you wanted to spend 1000 source merits, you couldn't. I am not bringing your sMerits into equation here.

I look at merits as a token of appreciation, a sign that you created or made something that other people like. I like being on the receiving end of that appreciation, and I want others to experience the same. It's a team effort. Everyone should chip in. At least that's the way I see it. If I have the decency to merit you, I want you to reciprocate in the same way towards others. If you don't want to do that, it's your call. We can still talk, exchange ideas, agree or disagree, even do business together. I don't have a problem with you, but you don't want to play with this team and, so I would rather pass the ball to someone else who does. I am sure you understand that this reply does not apply to you personally. I am just saying "you" because it's easier.

LoyceV has brought an interesting thought to the discussion. It never occurred to me that merit system was introduced to prevent users rank up.
It's not a method of punishing genuine members, but a necessary step that was required to stop account farming, account sales, ranking up based on activity and low-quality posts, etc. History has shown that many members have reached high ranks starting from Newbie even with the merit system around. So it works despite the criticism.
7008  Other / Meta / Re: Proposal: Rename the "Press" board to "Spammer of the Month" board on: November 14, 2021, 01:48:16 PM
Almost all of his links come from Coin Telegraph, so I can only assume he is being paid by them.
Maybe they are paying him, but somehow I doubt they need such type of marketing here. He is wearing a signature, so that's where the motivation for spam might come from. Copy-pasting existing articles, adding maybe a sentence or two, and you are done. On to the next post. It's an easy way to up your post count.

Would it be an option to remove signatures on that board?
That would just cause the spam to spill over to other subs.

At one point in time, we had better moderation in the Bitcoin Discussion board, but I don't think the admins view the Press sub as an important board of this forum anymore to want to do anything to change it. You can get your daily crypto news anywhere you want now. The press board is of minor importance nowadays.
7009  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to spend smerits? on: November 14, 2021, 01:26:26 PM
Do you also check whether the user is known merit source? If not, your method could lead sending more merit to merit source.
No, I don't take that into consideration and I am pretty sure that I have rewarded many merit sources with merits because of their quality posts. To become a merit source, a user needs to have a proven track record of sending merits, needs to be relatively known on the forum or his local, and have the ability to recognize a quality post. I only check to see that people who receive are also active in the giving part. Whether those merits that are being sent are source merits or sMerits, is not that important to me.

I think it's pretty normal that a merit source who has several hundred source merits has an increased number of sMerits that he doesn't always manage to share. And that's OK. I think it was LoyceV who said somewhere that he has over 1000 sMerits. That doesn't make him a hoarder. He simply has a huge number of source merits, so he rarely gets around to spend anything else.
7010  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Learnt from Someone's mistake on: November 14, 2021, 08:05:52 AM
If you find something early $200 in bitcoin in 2015 is now $48000, so what's the point in taking additional risks?
Some people believe that history will repeat itself. If it happened to Bitcoin, it will surely happen to other assets as well. That's the way they think. All we have to do is keep searching for that new Bitcoin. Many missed out on the Bitcoin early days, and they now want to make up for it with an altcoin not knowing that it will likely never happen.
7011  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to spend smerits? on: November 14, 2021, 07:47:51 AM
Here is my take on the entire meriting dilemma.

This question came after I checked my merit history and realised I have only given out 1 merit.
I always take a quick look at a user's meriting stats. Why do I do that? I want to make sure that the merits are not being hoarded, but used to award other quality posts. I have noticed that you have slowly started giving out some merits. That's good. You should continue doing that. If you didn't and I came across a post of yours I though was merit-worthy, I would have checked your stats, noticed you have received plenty (50) but given out only 1 and I wouldn't have merited you. Even though someone's post is good, I want them to be part of the merit economy. If a user doesn't merit others, it tells me that he doesn't care about the system and thus should not reap the benefits from it either. It's that easy.

Legendary members do not look like they need more merit. FYI I have read a couple of lengends complain they rather merit be given to those who need it to achieve rank than themselves.
Everyone likes to receive praise and recognition. The rank doesn't matter. If time and effort is put into writing a post, that "work" should be awarded.

Merit given to a post is usually 1 or 2, very few cases have I seen someone giving 5 merits or more to a post.
I have seen people receive 20-30 merits per post. I remember suchmoon used to give 4-8 per post she thought was good. The supply is different from merit source to merit source. So you can't expect (although it's possible) a source who has 100 merits to send the same amounts as someone who has 1000 each month.

Having said all that, I am meriting your OP only because you slowly started to hand out some of your sMerits to others and I would like to see you doing that in the future as well.
7012  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help with a exchange that has lowest fee on: November 13, 2021, 10:46:35 PM
I would seriously ask you to reconsider using the Tron network for USDT if you want to exchange BTC and LTC. I don't see a reason why you would pay $10, $20 or $30 in fees when you can pay $1. If you were to exchange such small amounts, there are a couple of other things you need to pay attention to.

- What is the minimum trading amount at the site you are using?
- What is the minimum withdrawal amount of the exchange?
- How much will you be required to pay in fees, and is it worth if?

For such small amounts, you might even consider a quick crypto swap platform. I don't really like to recommend them since many have a bad reputation, but check out what you could get for those amounts you want to trade on Change Now or Changelly, for example. Compare that to what you would get when you use a traditional CEX where you have to pay mining fees for depositing, trading fees to make the exchange, and withdrawal fees to withdraw the coins to your private wallet. Compare the rates to see which of the two makes more sense to you.
7013  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbooks often offer different odds for the same type of bet on: November 13, 2021, 10:30:06 PM
Based on my observation, double chance has the higher probability of winning because you can place your bet on two different possible winning results.
Correct. A football match can end in three different ways. A double-chance bet covers two possible outcomes.

This appears to be a game of chances but with the greater odds of winning. Although this is still harder compared to the usual traditional and straight betting alone because of multiple choices.
I don't follow the logic to be honest. The 1X double-chance bet, for example, is a winning one if the match ends with a home win but also with a draw. If you aren't sure that the home team will win, you increase your chances by betting on the draw as well with greatly lower payouts. It can only help you and can't make it harder.

Spending more bucks in exchange for trying to win the bet is what most people do, most especially those who are obsessed in winning.
A greater chance to win equals to lower odds. To compensate for that, many will increase their stake, so you are right about that.
7014  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: November 13, 2021, 12:35:50 PM
Or do you try to reset your device once and enter your seed again in it before you do this?

I would use the Recovery Check app instead.
I think there were some problems with this app in the recent past where it showed that a seed was wrong even though it was the correct one. I think those problems started occurring with the Nano X after the most recent firmware upgrade.

@jerry0
You can send a little bit from your normal (non-passphrased wallet) to your passphrased one. Reset the wallet to factory settings, remove the accounts in your Ledger Live portfolio, recover your passphrased wallet, scan for existing accounts, and add them. The LL app should show that small amount you sent.

Alternatively, you can just write down or save the first generated address once you create your passphrased account. After that you reset the wallet, remove all accounts from your LL portfolio, recover your wallet, re-add the accounts and check that the first generated address matches the one you saved previously.

I didn't noticed that higher rank can participate already. Last time I checked is newbies to members only.
Yeah, I handled it a bit awkwardly this time by editing my posts instead of writing a new one. Sorry about that.

3. chain reorg
Chain reorg is the word I was looking for. Nice.

Round #6 is hereby complete! For the next round, the 3 lowest ranks will have a 1-day advantage to guess just like for this round. After that, I will make sure my announcement is a new post informing everyone that all other ranks can start submitting their answers.

Thanks everyone for participating!
7016  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbooks often offer different odds for the same type of bet on: November 13, 2021, 11:59:55 AM
I'm just curious though: how often do these opportunities come up, and how wide are the margins usually?
They are present in almost all football matches worldwide. Just open any of them and compare the full-time odds to the Asian Handicap lines and you will see. But not just that, there are other things you can notice. For example, if a match is a draw at the end of the first half, bookies will offer you live bets for the full-time result and the winner of the 2nd half. I have seen the odds being different here as well, even though the outcome is the same. If the first half ends with a draw, and you bet on the away team to win the 2nd half, it's exactly the same as if you were to bet on the away team to win in full-time. But the odds are different.

Would you recommend seeking out these odds discrepancies for someone who is just a retail sportsbettor who wants to maximize their profits? Or is it a waste of time to look through that deeply?
If your stakes are a few $/€, it really doesn't matter that much if the odds are 2.02 or 2.05 for example. But if you are a highroller and risktaker who bets with thousands of dollars per match, it's a different story.
7017  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 13, 2021, 08:52:12 AM
People who purchased Nano S devices in 2017 are starting to see first issues now, that means cheap display is probably meant to last 4 years more or less.
I guess I could soon be affected then. I think I got mine somewhere in 2017/2018. So far I haven't noticed any screen issues or problems with the plastic cover. I am generally not a person who breaks electronic devices because he drops them or carries them in his pockets, so I don't think those types of things will affect me.

I did update the Bitcoin and Ethereum apps yesterday and was surprised when I noticed that the usual "update all" button was greyed out. Couldn't figure out why until I noticed the difference in the app sizes. I had to uninstall a third app I had to update those of BTC and ETH.

@pooya87 : transaction on it, I don't save it, it's been many years, I want to be safe first.
pooya87 doesn't believe that the string you have is a private key at all, hence the suggestion to check if it's a transaction ID instead. You can do that in Electrum like he mentioned or by using any blockchain explorer. But I don't think it's a smart thing to do just in case it's not a transaction ID after all. You don't want your private key to be entered online like that.

What do you mean the string is like a birthday? What does it begin with?
7019  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbooks often offer different odds for the same type of bet on: November 13, 2021, 08:01:54 AM
this actually happens a lot more than people believe specially in e-sports markets like the odds for a team to win 2-0 would be 2.5 while the odds for the same team to win match by handicap -1.5 would be different sometimes like 2.3...
I don't play around with e-sports since I don't know anything about it. But if what you are saying is true and it's a common occurrence, there might be some possibilities to take advantage of the odds difference.

Maybe this can be explained by the fact that the Asian betting market is less liquid and in order to attract liquidity there the bookmaker gives slightly better odds?
Possibly, yes. I am sure that many people who even bet regularly don't know how Asian Handicap betting works, so they avoid it. Given a choice between a full-time bet and a -0.5 AH, many would probably put their money on the full-time result without thinking further.
7020  Other / Meta / Re: Red Tag is becoming Rampant in the Forum. on: November 13, 2021, 07:52:43 AM
and apparently there are enough participants on the forum whose names do not appear in any spreadsheet, nevertheless, these guys wear signatures with advertisements from different bookmakers (I suspect this is not a gesture of goodwill).
It is quite possible that some people have individual agreements with certain companies or casinos like you said. Maybe they are friends with the developers, maybe the sites throw some work their way and this is a way to return the favor and say thanks. Or maybe they just gambled there, got lucky, and they now want to advertise them a little. If I remember correctly, Lauda used to wear a FortuneJack signature for a long tome even though she/he was not a part of the campaign at one point. At least officially. There are surely other examples, I just can't think of any.
