I've given merits to newbies because I thought their posts were worth it. You can't buy merit from me, and anybody I see buying or selling merits is added to my ignore list. I will publish a gallery of people on my ignore list in the near future, and the link will go in my sig.

Hi every! I'm newbie and I want to ask: How earn merit points? Thank
Learn to read.
It isn't the merit system that need to be improved. What needs to be improved is the inability of some people to read thread titles. Did you notice that there are a couple of threads on this board that discuss the merit system? ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
One could also say - do not post about Bitcoin if you don't know anything about it. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
Not everybody is showing a loss. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) If you are investing in Bitcoin rather than speculating, you should average out your purchases, and " buy the dips ". Of course this doesn't work if you don't believe in the long term future growth of Bitcoin. I believe that Bitcoin is the crypto gold standard, and it has a very positive future as a result of this.
This means that decaying of merit points may be introduced in future if required.
Merit points and sMerits are not the same thing. As far as I know, there is no plan to decay or remove merit points. It is sMerit ( the bonus for being awarded merit points ) that may be decayed.

Merrit points won't address this problem. Some members will just keep posting all over the place in the hope that somebody will give them some merit. The answer is moderation - deleting posts, moving them to the correct boards, and merging threads. This is the only way to streamline the forum in my opinion.
Part of the problem is that the beginners board appears not to be moderated, and therefore it is difficult for new members to participate in discussions to learn about Bitcoin. As a result of this, they turn to other boards, and they start threads like "what is Bitcoin? ". This turns other members away from those boards, and thus it is difficult for posts to be noticed.
I beieve it would help new members if they were restricted to a welcome board, and the beginners board until they found their feet in the forum. Of course this is only true if those boards were moderated for the benefit of new members.

It's just the sMerit that will decay. These are points that are generated when somebody is awarded merit points. The idea is that those points should be awarded to other members to encourage quality posts. If a member does not use his sMerit, then they may be removed, but this won't affect the merit points he has been awarded. There is a responsibility in having sMerit to award, and it can take some time to find posts to receive them. Some members are not prepared to spend this time, so they dump their points in the soup kitchens, or misuse them by assisting in the promotion of their signature campaign members, or their alts.

I gave you one of my sMerit because I though your reply was concise and relevant. I nearly didn't because I thought some members will say that I only did it because of your comments about me. I guess some of the comments by the charity workers here are starting to get to me. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

In a perfect world price is determined by supply, demand, and the velocity of the currency. It is slightly different if the currency is pegged to an asset such as Royal Mint Gold, or a gold backed Ruble or Yuan.
Bitcoin is a bit different, and can be the victim of price manipulation by the elite bankers. Because the available supply is fairly small and restricted it is vulnerable to pump and dump activities. The frenzied activities of new speculators tend to amplify these price movements.
I think some people award merit just to avoid the responsibilitty of awarding merit. They may dump it into the old boys network, or they may give it to the soup kitchens, or run the merit food banks for new members to curry favour with the community.
I did look at the first page of your posts, but, I'm sorry, I didn't give you any merit. This was because some of the posts related to ICOs, and I don't understand ICOs at the moment. The others were what I call " filler posts", these are useful to the board, but, with only a limited supply of sMerit, I'm trying to award them to posters who make unique points.

Take care if you are refreshing the donate page, as I understand this can cause a double spend.

Is Bitcoin a stock? - No Can it be quoted on a "stock" exchange? As it isn't a stock, you can guess the answer.
However, there was a tradition of quoting all sorts of things unofficially on the old London Stock Exchange, so maybe there are some private listings. Don't forget that there is a Bitcoin futures market, and that is intended to be used by Bitcoin price speculators ( and the pumpers and dumpers ).

The +merit button works well for me. If you want an enhanced facility, I think a member wrote a bit of js to improve this. I find notification really annoying, and I disable them wherever I can. I'm such a luddite. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

I'm going to close this thread as I think everybody gets the point, and there are many other similar threads. I am putting together a gallery of members I've put on ignore, and I'll post that link in my sig when it is presentable. Many thanks to all my readers ( well most of them ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) ), and please keep making those quality posts on the Bitcoin topic boards.
I think some of the threads could be merged. Also members could close some threads if they feel they have outlived their usefulness. I closed one of mine ( for other reasons), but if it would help, I'll close a few more.

I do not think it is appropriate to be a rating tool. I believe this is a tool to improve the quality of forums. It's really up to the members to use it to help direct the flow of writing. So far it seems to be used to "appreciate" ghosts in the past, and to help sig campaign members to "rank" to increase the size of their banners. Because of this abuse, I think the good points can only be given alone, which reduces a bit of the offense. Merits will cause nothing but problems for forum users and admins. We have allready seen members being accused of selling merits to other members. When I used to run forums (not crypto forums) I tried the merit sytem out and the emails from users claiming that this person or that person sold merits got so bad I disabled it in
I'm leaving myself open here to another attack by you-know-who. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) This is my account on another forum. Every member has the ability to "like" a post, and he can like every post on the forum if he wants to, but that wouldn't really be productive. If I analyse my likes, it gives me a very good idea of public opinion and approval in the forum. Because a member can only give one like to a post and it is public, it gives me a lot of encouragement to make what I consider to be helpful and informative posts, especially when the like comes from a senior and experienced member. ![](https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fcryptobounty.com%2Fposting-images%2Fdomain-likes.jpg&t=663&c=7lAtYCkkLr7LRg)

They are getting ready to create more debt for the people who are going to rush out and buy Bitcoin with their credit cards. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

Yes it would be wrong in my opinion.
There are already enough threads like this, and if you include your own posts, then it could be consideredto be begging
