I guess I don't understand what you mean by "daily deal".  Do you mean that you would be adjusting the price daily based on the daily MtGox price?
7142  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want my Bitcoins surgically-placed inside my body. on: June 15, 2011, 06:10:17 AM
Memorize the private key for a single address, then send all your bitcoins to that address, then import the private key to a new wallet when you need to use said coins.

Seriously, would be easier than surgery.
That's very risky. Memory can be very volatile. One mismemorization of one number and *poof*.
Yes, yes indeed...

Include a checksum?  Cheesy  I kid, I kid.

EDIT:  Ok, new option.  Encrypt your private key, then have it tattoo'd on your body somewhere.

Can somebody answer me this question....

I see all this talk about how people selling their btc makes the value go down.

Why?

I could understand if there was in fact a central place buying up the coins per-se.  But isn't MTGOX simply filling orders that other users have on the books with them?  If somebody sells 100k btc, that means somebody is buying 100k btc, right?

So.. somebody please tell me where my logic is flawed.
If I have an order on the books for $20/BTC for 10 BTC's, and someone else wants to sell their bitcoins, but are a bit more desperate to do so, then they'll have to post their price below mine.

Really, when people say that selling btc makes the price go down, they really mean that listing bitcoins for sale makes the price go down.
7145  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Mining Contract (.2 BTC per day) on: June 15, 2011, 05:01:57 AM
Why wouldn't I just buy the coins straight off of MtGox then?
7146  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Mining Contract (.2 BTC per day) on: June 15, 2011, 04:51:40 AM
I'll give you $60 for 0.2 BTC/day for a month.

The best part is, this was the jpg:

So if he is trying to figure out what the file actually is, and renames it to a .jpg... well, he'll know that I saw what he did there.  Tongue

1)  Hard to say, without actually seeing it.  Send me your wallet.dat, and I'll tell you if it secured properly.  Tongue  I kid, I kid.  But basically, if you move your wallet.dat from your bitcoin directory to your truecrypt drive, and it no longer exists in unencrypted form, your wallet should be safe from anything and everything.  But you can only use it when it is unencrypted, so it's really only useful if you want to create a separate "savings" wallet.

2)  Just copy the wallet.dat to other locations.  A USB drive, external hard drive, send it to yourself via email, etc.  Note that I'd recommend encrypting any backups though, since someone could grab your USB drive or external hard drive or hack into your email and grab the file, if it is not encrypted.

3)  Be patient.  It'll eventually find some other people (nodes) to connect to.
7149  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: June 14, 2011, 11:57:57 PM
Another suggestion: I realize you want to keep it pure, but how about adding an extra character as a checksum? It's very easy for the payer to mess the address slightly by writing it down wrong or hearing something wrong. A one character checksum would drastically reduce the chances of sending money to the wrong account.
Adding an additional character of your firstbits address will accomplish the same thing (miniscule chance of a typo), but without ruining the purity.

Example:
One of my firstbits address:  18tkn
The same address, but more protected against typos:  18tknb
The same address, but VERY protected against typos:  18tknbs

Basically, once you own a firstbits address, you also own all of the firstbits addresses beyond the minimum chars necessary to uniquely define the address.  And each added character would add in typo protection just like a checksum would (it will probably be a long, long time before any address is created that is only one character off of 18tknbs).  It is then just up to the individual handing out the firstbits address how much "typo-resistance" they want to give their address, versus having it shorter and easier to remember.
7150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: June 14, 2011, 09:33:06 PM
foo, I would say it is more akin to someone dropping ".com" from the end of a web address, then expecting people to still know what the address was for.

Putting a 1 before it should clue people in to the fact that it's the start of a bitcoin address, just like saying "firstbits.com" immediately tells someone that it is a website.  Saying "go to firstbits" wouldn't tell a person much.

140 chars limit on tweets - good point!
7153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: June 14, 2011, 06:45:32 PM
Another possible use might be forum signatures.  Since a forum signature here is limited to 300 chars, in the interest of saving chars, you might write:

FB: 18tkn
or
FirstBits: 18tkn

Instead of:

18TKNbSLTrd3a2W8mtoH5uNzFhWRWNcuHU

Either one would be significantly shorter, but would still allow you to ask for donations to that address in your forum signature.
7154  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: don't use this website on: June 14, 2011, 06:29:13 AM
For kicks, I renamed a 150kb jpg to wallet.dat.  This was the response:

Code:
YOUR BITCOIN WALLET WITH HASH d40a5e9f0e87bc7c32782f8aa349e6b861307b9c IS VALID FOR 2011-06-14T06:28:20UTC

Phew!  Glad I got that one sorted out, I was afraid my wallet wasn't working right!
7155  Other / Meta / Re: forum is slow as owl snot in january... on: June 14, 2011, 04:46:08 AM
Simple - use a different forum.

I might have a suggestion as to which one to use as well...   Wink
7156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got hacked - any help is welcome! on: June 14, 2011, 04:41:31 AM
Think about this - if EVERY user has to take steps X, Y, and Z in order to use the system safely, then steps X, Y, and Z must be built into the system.
This, most definitely, I agree with.
7157  Other / Meta / Re: Email address not hidden on: June 14, 2011, 04:28:52 AM
I would consider it a software defect as well Veldy.  But that's why I like xenForo - the devs seem to pay attention to even the smallest of bugs and actually do something about it.
7158  Other / Meta / Re: Remind me again, why are we using SMF? on: June 14, 2011, 03:50:27 AM
xenForo takes the cake.
7159  Other / Meta / Re: Email address not hidden on: June 14, 2011, 03:49:53 AM
Your email is hidden.  In your profile, I see

"Email:   hidden"

There is no link to email you in the sidebar next to your post.  That is likely just because your email address isn't hidden from you, so you can see the link to email yourself, if you so choose.
7160  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: So ... What pools are NOT having problems right now? on: June 14, 2011, 03:44:18 AM
*shrug*

deepbit's been fine for me.  I've received 3.19 BTC in the last 24 hours, with a calculated 3.11 BTC for my MHash rate.
