As Chinese miners migrate to Kazakhstan, this poses capacity challenges to the Kazakhstan grid, which could be supplemented by the Kremlins state-owned utility Inter RAO in the near future. Chairman of AB Inter RAO Lietuva board Alexandra Panina has voiced her concern regarding Kazakhstans energy deficit. Inter RAO is the state-owned electricity utility in the Russian Federation with which Kazakhstan authorities are in talks to supplement Kazakhstans electricity deficits. Kazakhstan has a cap on electricity prices, which has led to aging infrastructure and generation capacity. This, however, has attracted miners to the country, increasing the total consumption to 83 million kWh from January 2021 to September 2021, for which the country was ill-prepared, according to Panini. Panini has further opined that Russian electricity exports should have a higher tariff. The Central Asian country is home to mining farms run by BIT Mining, Canaan, KazDigital, Xive, amongst other companies. As the use of digital wallets and cryptocurrencies becomes more abundant, new use cases for micropayments will be further explored and developed. I recently came across Marc Andreessens article from 2014 on Bitcoin (BTC). In many ways, it is visionary (no surprise). I have been in the industry for four years now, with most of my focus being on the social impact of blockchain. It is astonishing to me that in 2014, before there was any institutional presence in Bitcoin or, indeed, a popular understanding of this new technology Andreessen was able to outline its potential economic and social impact for the future. Nearly eight years after he inked his words, I would like to address one of the topics from his article: micropayments. I will explore how blockchain could help transform micropayments and thus enable not only the monetization of certain aspects of businesses that are in need of a solution but also could assist societys most vulnerable. Micropayments Micropayments are not a new concept. Since the mid-1990s, micropayments have experienced various degrees of popularity. By definition, micropayments are transactions with a value smaller than a certain threshold. Importantly, below that threshold, the transaction fee incurred becomes a significant portion of the total transaction value and, consequently, not economical. Another important aspect is that due to the minuscule monetary amounts, micropayments refer only to digital transactions of non-tangible goods. Any additional cost of handling and shipping might mean a hundredfold increase of the original transaction value, making it utterly irrelevant. American Express Chairman and CEO Stephen Squeri made it clear that American Express wouldnt offer crypto-linked cards in the near future. However, it is examining the crypto market and could potentially offer rewards points, besides taking an interest in stablecoins. Major blockchain technology company Blockstream has completed six tranches of its Bitcoin (BTC) mining security token offering (STO), securing a total of 30.9 million euros ($36 million). Blockstream officially announced Thursday that the company raised 13.9 million euros ($16.1 million) in the sixth tranche of its Bitcoin mining-focused security token known as Blockstream Mining Note (BMN). According to the announcement, the latest raise was the largest tranche that Blockstream has ever issued, marking increasing interest from individual and institutional investors. The raise brings the total BMN supply to more than 122, with the total number of investors amounting to 70. Blockstream officially introduced its BMN security token in March 2021, offering non-US qualified investors an alternative to mining Bitcoin or investing in Bitcoin mining stocks by mining BTC using the associated hashrate of BMN. Issued on the Liquid sidechain of Bitcoin, each BMN1 entitles investors to up to 2,000 terahashes per second of Bitcoin mined at Blockstreams enterprise-grade mining facilities. The BMN token can be traded with other qualified investors, delivering associated BTC to the BMN holder upon maturity of a three-year term from July 2021 to July 2024. Walmart plans to eventually install 8,000 Bitcoin ATMs in the U.S. and has installed 200 in a pilot program. Walmart has partnered with coin-cashing machine company Coinstar and crypto-cash exchange CoinMe to install 200 Bitcoin ATMs in its stores across the U.S. Although the pilot includes only 200 kiosks, the broader launch plans to eventually see the installation of 8,000 bitcoin ATMs across the country, according to Bloomberg. There has been no further details on timelines as of yet. According to Coin ATM Radar, there are currently over 25,000 bitcoin ATMs at select grocery stores and service stations in the U.S. Coinstar operates 4,400 kiosks enabled for Bitcoin purchases, across 33 states. Chief strategy officer and head of research at BitOoda Sam Doctor told Bloomberg that while Bitcoin ATMs arent a new development, and can already be found at many supermarkets: Walmart expands Bitcoin access to more people, though, and gives it further legitimacy among skeptics, should they roll it out beyond an initial pilot. Teslas venture into the bitcoin markets earlier this year has paid dividends with unrealized gains topping a billion dollars at current prices. Elon Musk took a huge gamble when his firm Tesla purchased $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin back in January. At the time of purchase, it was estimated that BTC was trading in the low $30,000 zone. Tesla sold around 10% of its bitcoin stash in Q2 in a move that boosted that quarters earnings by $272 million. The company still holds an estimated 43,200 BTC according to BitcoinTreasuries. That remaining BTC is now worth an estimated $2.8 billion giving the company an unrealized profit of $1.3 billion. The value of its holdings has increased 86% since that initial purchase. Tesla is the second-largest corporate holder of bitcoin behind MicroStrategy which holds 114,041 BTC worth an estimated $7.4 billion at current prices.
