721  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How To Under/Overclock ATI Cards Beyond Factory Settings On Linux - Guide on: May 05, 2011, 06:57:40 AM
Why is windows needed? Just use aticonfig.

There's no need to flash anything for most cards out there.

Well for the 4 (different branded) cards I have installed in my ubuntu 11.04 setup right now... aticonfig is only able to lower the memory clocks to ~600 Mhz on each card.

Apparently it is possible to lower the memory clocks to 300 Mhz and beyond, but you must first flash the GPU's BIOS... and apparently RBE is the only proven method of doing so with ease.
722  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: poclbm/phoenix crashing, nothing works on: May 05, 2011, 05:25:44 AM
Seems like you're cutting corners... with both the 1100 Watt PSU and the 2GB of RAM.

The PSU is a little low for 4 cards and a CPU depending on how many watts your CPU is... and your ram is darned low for a windows machine.
723  Bitcoin / Mining / How To Under/Overclock ATI Cards Beyond Factory Settings On Linux - Guide on: May 05, 2011, 05:15:59 AM
Hey Bitcoiners, am I doing this right?

1. Install windows on your Linux rig (or install WINE on Linux if you're comfortable).

2. Install the Radeon Bios Editor to windows.

3. Flash the bios' of the cards to your desired specifications (min 200mhz memory clock and max 1000mhz core clock)

4. Re-install linux back on your mining rig + setup miners as usual. This step is only necessary if not using WINE.

5. Use your favorite linux ati settings editor:
5.1 If using aticonfig: set your clocks to desired settings using the code: aticonfig --adapter=ADAPTER_NUMBER --odsc=CORE_CLOCK,MEMORY_CLOCK
5.2 If using AMDOverdriveCtrl: set your clocks to desired settings using the GUI provided.

Please offer your suggestions below. I will edit this post as necessary to become the most viable solution.
724  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: ATI Config Can See My Cards But POCLBM Can't? on: May 05, 2011, 05:07:01 AM
sudo aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all

Forgot to mention I had already tried that as well, but thanks!
725  Bitcoin / Mining / [SOLVED] ATI Config Can See My Cards But POCLBM Can't? on: May 05, 2011, 01:21:56 AM
So I am in the process of setting up 4 5870s (3 gigabyte and 1 powercolor) on my 790fx motherboard.

I am using ubuntu 11.04, ati sdk stream v2.1, catalyst v11.4 and the latest poclbm from github.

When I type: aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt

I am met with 1 temperature reading of a cool 75 degrees Celsius, and 3 "failed to get temp" readings... So aticonfig knows they exist.

When I type: ./poclbm.py

I am met with 1 CPU and 1 CYPRESS GPU showing up.

Anybody else come across a similar problem?

Notes:
  • I have typed: export DISPLAY=:0
  • I have attempted to disable crossfire, it was not enabled.

Answer:
Simply re-start your computer at this point. D'oh!  Undecided

Long Answer:
I had attempted to update my ubuntu 10.10 install sequence on the fly. I am also somewhat of a linux noob. Apparantly 11.04 requires one more re-start than the 10.10 instructions do for one reason or another.

If anyone else has noticed this "problem" and cares to explain I would be much obliged!
726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Searching for a post containing the following quote on: May 05, 2011, 01:06:20 AM
I for one think we should limit the editing of posts after a certain amount of time.

It is breaking the forum when people architecture when people remove what they have said in a conversation.

There should be no reason (unless approved by a mod to be a stickied/updating post) to edit your post after 24 hours.
727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How could we get "Bitcoin" listed in standard dictionary files used by FireFox? on: May 05, 2011, 01:01:23 AM
So as I type out this post in the latest edition of Firefox (4.0.1) apparently bitcoin and/or Bitcoin is spelled incorrectly. (See the picture attached below.)

How could we go about getting "Bitcoin" and "Bitcoins" listed in popular online spell checkers? Like the one that is built into Firefox?

Note: Tried to upload a png pic of 5kb and received this message: "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator." Can we not upload pictures to this site? Or are they working on the backend?

Yes--please try and treat the feature wisely people!  It will be good if we can use it as effective meta-data rather than as a joke or game.
I'm curious what, in your opinion, is a wise circumstance under which to "smite" a user?  Sometimes there are people on here whose attitudes severely annoy me, and I'd like to give them a smack, but the whole smiting business seems so... unsportsmanlike or something.  When would you use it?

IMHO... Smiting someone purely because of their attitude would be non-productive to the rest of the community.

I for one will only smite someone based on purposely incorrect/falsified information (of which I believe there is much of on this forum, in the mining section at least...) and/or engaging in other practices that are counter productive to the bitcoin community. Like DDOSing mtgox for example... If we ever figure out which members might be associated with it.
729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TDB Response to DDoS attacks on: May 05, 2011, 12:11:59 AM

Botnets are a dime a dozen these days.

I am pretty sure somebody outed the btcex founder as at least "coaxing" the botnets into bringing down mtgox. But I have no idea.

I doubt we will ever truly know.
730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Doesn't Coinpal Sue Paypal? on: May 05, 2011, 12:10:42 AM
Yea stupid idea I suppose...

With the number of people who have had their money held for 180 days through PayPal... if a class action was at all possible, I am sure it would have been created by now.

No worries, BitCoin will take care of Paypal sooner of later.

I get this amazing feeling every time I see a "Money Mart" or "Western Union" money transfer service...

Kind of like "you guys are goners!", or "yay for society" type of feeling!

That is all.

Make good use of it folks.

It will now be easier for us all to wade through some of the BS on this forum!
732  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Conversation I had with my girlfriend the other night on: May 04, 2011, 11:01:53 PM
I told my wife about Bitcoin while we were on holiday, and she agreed that I could spend some money on it. I bought a 5870 GPU card, and bought some coins.

I made sure she understood that, although the possible upside was big, it was quite possible that Bitcoin would come to nothing. That way, if it tanks, she won't be too upset.

My teenage daughter was also in the conversation, and she asked all the right questions about the technicalities of the Bitcoin system. I was impressed!

THIS is why I don't want to get married...  Kiss
733  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Namecoins have a windows client? on: May 04, 2011, 10:23:28 PM
Difficulty is still 512, it is easy to mine many blocks a day with a decent GPU.

No sense in hoarding blocks however, they expire as far as I know?
734  Other / Off-topic / Re: PayPal Pokes Into POS ‘E-Wallet’ Market on: May 04, 2011, 10:22:30 PM
Read title as peice of sh*t 'E-Wallet' Market...  Undecided
735  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scheme & Scam selling - will BTC end it? on: May 04, 2011, 10:20:53 PM
Re-write at all possible?

Not getting you here.

Where ever "free offers" are allowed to be included with the purchase of goods, these "scams" will exist. Buyer beware.
736  Other / Off-topic / Re: Government takes away basketball poles from the kids! on: May 04, 2011, 10:20:07 PM
Godamnit I hate cops with no human decency or common sense.

Sure, there is a law. But for what?

It is probably there to make sure fire trucks can easily access a burning house, not so that sour/snotty neighbours with no kids can remove a neighbours basketball net.

What is the world coming to?

You North Americans complain about obesity, and yet you remove every possible means of exercise within city limits?

Want to ride your bike? Do it on the road.

Want to rollerblade? Do it on the road.

Want to play basketball? Buy your own court.

Want to play hockey? Buy some ice time. (They just recently banned hockey on city streets in Toronto, which is insane.)
737  Other / Off-topic / Re: US kills Osama bin Laden at cost of > $400 billion on: May 04, 2011, 10:09:56 PM
http://costofwar.com/

Wouldn't it have been cheaper with a decentralized assasination market?

i don't believe so.

as i recall, the last bounty on osama's head was either 20 or 40 (i think it was doubled in there somewhere) million dollars.  didn't work, did it?

in any case, good riddance.

Somehow I think that if they offered up 200 billion dollars as a reward (half of their costs), I think he would have showed up on the whitehouse doorstep the next day.
738  Bitcoin / Mining / Where Will The Difficulty Factor Go Next? (After it hits 140k next week)... on: May 04, 2011, 09:32:40 PM
I predict down.

It has never hit 140k before (as far as I know), I assume it is from all the OCN fanboys turning on their computers overnight, and will drop considerably once they realize what they've done/how pointless it is for them.
739  Other / Off-topic / Re: U.S. Checking Account comparison on: May 04, 2011, 09:29:58 PM
Anyone any good with photoshop?!

You should add "BTC Client" to that chart!
740  Other / Off-topic / Re: Even the US Treasury has the same opinion about their product! on: May 04, 2011, 09:27:28 PM
Interesting, I think I want to buy one!

Actually I think you read the article backwards.

It states that there are no more bags of shredded money for sale, in other words... they are putting every dollar they print into circulation.
