I find it hilarious that the gender ratio for this forum is more male than even internet pornography viewership (72% male).

Pornviewing by time has to be more that 72% male.

you're not thinking that one all the way through, FreeMoney...

Well so far for me I've figured out how to start mining.

The security piece is another matter. It appears my account was hacked because of a mistake I made.

I know it was this morning and can see the payout transaction in my account and the wallet address it's going to however I'm confused about something.

Under the "Ledger" section it states....... "Every time a transaction is sent, some bitcoins are usually sent back to yourself at a new address"...

What does this mean? When I logged into my account (with slush) someone had changed my wallet address and the payment threshold. They also unchecked the box to have an email notification sent to me when a payout is made.

I notice in the ledger that the payment hasn't been made yet. I can see the block and the wallet address that someone put in my account.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thx

the first thing you do is change your password.  then you put your own wallet address back into slush's information.

then change the payment threshold back to the way you'd like it, and re-check the e-mail notification box.

then go here:  www.dictionary.com

and look up the difference between "hacked", and stolen.

throwing words like 'hacked' around is not useful.  people like slush depend on all of us trusting their security - and they do a pretty damn fine job of it.  i'm almost sure that what you meant was you screwed up, and either gave your password to somebody you should not have trusted, or you wrote it down in the clear and somebody lifted it.  yes?

"...because of a mistake I made."

so really, your account wasn't hacked, was it?

Correct. I put it out in the clear not knowing it was visible so it was all my fault.

I see you take it quite personally when it comes to semantics. I will certainly be more careful with my verbage.

I don't see where you can change your password but it looks like you can change your username. I've since just created a new account with new user name and new password and used different usernames and passwords for my registered workers.

Thanks and didn't mean to offend.  Undecided

no offense taken.  i have concern for the image of the major players in this project.  they're important to all of us.
723  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what just happened? on: May 30, 2011, 05:03:30 AM
Just to make sure: Did you run bitcoin.exe with the -server flag?

no.  i run linux.

./bitcoind

with rpcuser and rpcpassword in the ~/.bitcoin/bin/64/bitcoin.conf file.

EDIT:  ...and those local Bitcoin clients are working now.

EDIT:  i mean; ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
724  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what just happened? on: May 30, 2011, 04:11:33 AM
2.) i couldn't start a local Bitcoin client on any of my miners for the period of the outtage.  did anyone else have that problem?

I didn't have this problem at all.  Did you have them all pointed to pools?

I'm in the middle of deciding whether or not I want to use some of my available permanent hosts for Bitcoin nodes.  I was watching my recent connections.

For the two nodes that I don't pay-per bandwidth for, the connection count went from 160 and 156 to 18 and 32.....

Peer connections going from 300+ to 50 is a little weird, no?

I checked the hosts and there were no signs of repeated connects, login guessing or denial of service-looking-things, so nodes weren't affected.

As of whenever this posts goes up..  I've got about 100 connections.

I'm more interested in being a node than a miner.

no.  i started local clients, figuring i'd take advantage of the outtage to do a little solo mining.  just rpcuser and rpcpassword in .conf - the usual.  i couldn't get a single connection out of four local clients.  not one connection.
725  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what just happened? on: May 30, 2011, 04:08:45 AM
DDoS from Russia, is what the word is.

but what were they attacking?  it wasn't just slush, or just deepbit.

i'd still like to know if anyone else had trouble starting their local client.

if it was an actual DDoS - from wherever - it was only a test.  too short.

the pools are going to have to establish whitelists...
726  Bitcoin / Mining / what just happened? on: May 30, 2011, 03:50:55 AM
need data...

1.) the two biggest pools go down.
a.) were any of the other pools affected?

2.) i couldn't start a local Bitcoin client on any of my miners for the period of the outtage.  did anyone else have that problem?

has anyone noticed any communication difficulties on 8332, or 8337?

that was weird.  and short.  it didn't appear to be localized.

comments?

@markm - i am not going to start my own block chain - it's just an idea where Satoshi (he is for sure here, i don't think he just went away from project of his life) can look at. However if you know any other systems RUNNING (or at least considered with pointed features) i would like to take a look:)

@Quantumplation - for your information i work in IT and i UNDERSTAND how the system works, i am just not a good writer. Technical side is not a problem and i NEVER considered mining here as scam. Read more carefully please, or ask if i wrote that in not understandable way. Mining will be always good to keep system working, i am just considering new start after 10 years which won't happen. (current mining IS unfair for late adopters BUT in future will work good to keep system secure, just like now. The problem i considered is that it can be fair start to everyone after 10 years with proper initial distribution also with mining to keep system working)
And please don't compare me to others until you read whole topic.

3) 'An unending, unquavering, unpersuadable attitude towards "the bitcoin doomsday" or "the Great Unjustice"'. -  no one says it will be forever unjust, i am just talking about early adopters which will gain a lot of human resources for small portion of work. BUT considering @rebuilder post i think if they will put all btcs within one month not just one hit then it will be all fine FOR SYSTEM, but still they will earn A LOT Smiley OK - let them be super rich, i just wan't to see how far bitcoin moves with everything with the way it's built.

Btw. if you do speak in English so good why i can't translate "unquavering" and "unpersuadable"? I understand what you mean, but google translator and other translators miss these words ; )
same stiches to "due to it's complicated nature" that should be "due to ITS complicated nature". You ALSO have deficiences in english. That was just one sentece i checked.

@billyjoeallen  - i totally agree , just looking for any system problems that can crack it in future and for improvements which won't happen probably Smiley

"...i am just talking about early adopters which will gain a lot of human resources for small portion of work."

you really need to try and get your head around the idea that there is no difference at all between risk, and work.

i'm not an early adopter (as you seem to understand it - in a year i suppose i will be considered as such).  but i wish that all those who've been accumulating Bitcoin, buying and selling using Bitcoin, and turning it into something real - get filthy stinking rich.  richer than i can even conceive of.

and i'm happy with what i've got and what i'm getting, because that's what i've earned - it is therefore what i deserve.

People are selling some bitcoins on ebay now. I don't know if ebay is going to allow this to continue long term, but if it does, that could become an easy place to buy and sell bitcoins.

Can you give me a link?I want to get my hands on some bitcoins, and since I already have an account on ebay it might be easier than mt.gox and the rest..
I cannot however find anything...Searching for "bitcoin" only gave me one result and that was to buy a discount code for 0.15BTC when purchasing at a site, searching for "BTC" will result in all sort of unrelated results like jewelery and empty DVD's,and "bit coin" will only yield results about physical coins...
Maybe ebay stopped the selling of bitcoins? It wouldn't seem far-fetched after Paypal...

the auction ended 23 minutes before your post...
730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Angel Group on: May 29, 2011, 03:39:04 PM
I think this is a great idea,

We can do this to promote the bitcoin systems, as for the details, how should we approach them? Like 'if you start using bitcoins we are about to give you 1000 dollars'?

As for the investment case, I think there should be an ultimate goal, like IPO for VCs,

What would the vision for such angel group be, purely promote bitcoin system?

nope: "Like 'if you start using bitcoins we are about to give you 1000 dollars'?"

who has the time for an endless series of objections to overcome?

more like "here's 100 BTC.  you might as well figure out how to use it, hmmm?"

one wonders how many of those... ahem... 10 sextillion hashes were used to support pr0n in some way...  Smiley

Bitcoin is men's toy

well yes - that's true at the moment.

so what?

anyone who finds that to be undesirable can certainly change it.

i would suggest organizing a donation sponsorship to NOW - paid only in Bitcoin.  get them - or any number of other organizations (and by default, the individuals who make up those organizations) - to start conducting business in Bitcoin.

it's just not that tough.
733  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is a PoS on: May 29, 2011, 03:17:54 PM
hmmm... somebody sniped it with 4 seconds to go:  $84.66.

i wonder if eBay will continue to let these go through, now that they're selling PayPal?

5 minutes to go with that auction.  $70.20.

watching and waiting for eBay to cancel it...
735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Angel Group on: May 29, 2011, 02:35:38 PM
please note:

charity is a wonderful thing - i donate to various charities myself, and am richer for doing that.

HOWEVER...

it isn't written anywhere that in donating to worthy causes, one cannot advance one's own.  so i would add one caveat to your proposal:

donate only to charities which do not currently accept Bitcoin.  and donate ONLY in Bitcoin.  include in the donation an explanation of Bitcoin, a set of standard links, and a quick "Getting Started for Organizations" tutorial.  this will have the salubrious effect of spreading the use and utility of Bitcoin to more and more individuals and organizations - there is a definite multiplier effect to be had from that.

a good approach?
736  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: The Ballad of the Bitcoin Miner (v0.1-alpha) on: May 29, 2011, 02:10:59 PM
heh.  pretty good.

now all you need is a poll:

1.)  i know this song from the TV series.
2.)  i know this song from "The Blues Brothers" movie.
3.)  i know this song from the Dead Kennedys.

nice to see a proper trailing apostrophe, BTW...

2, definitely 2.

definitely #1.  clint eastwood every week...

gotta get that on dvd.  i wonder how well it holds up?

OTOH, The Blues Brothers holds up pretty damn well.

738  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Did I wreck my 5850? on: May 28, 2011, 09:54:22 PM
doesn't look good though.  950 is pushing it.
i'm using 5850 at 1030 core, 230 mem, with no problems.

i've got a couple reference cards in one box at 925/315.  and slightly overvolted.  but i'm not an overclocking wizard by any means.  and my approach is mostly i don't wanna have to mess with anything - fire and forget.  that box has been running without a hitch (at under 70 C) for about six weeks...
739  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 3K worth of mining equipment did it all fail? on: May 28, 2011, 09:48:45 PM
the implication of your post is that you have more than one rig running, they are identical, and they have the same problem.

so it probably isn't the motherboard, or the cards.

i figure it's either heat or the PSUs are overtaxed.

Well Right now, only 1 rigg has been put together. It is only running 1 card, because I dont have dummy plugs yet, they are coming. Since it's crashing with 1 card I am getting worried.

ahh.  an entirely different kettle of fish.

put in a different card.  try to duplicate the problem.  then, if it duplicates, try a different PSU.  etc.
