$29/$31.50 is nothing compared to what it will be in a few months.  Seriously, the word on bitcoin is JUST starting to spread through the major news sources.  It's going for a ride, and it won't be stopping for a long time yet.

7243  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Selling my well loved laptop on: June 08, 2011, 08:09:54 AM
Dell Inspiron 6000, literally upgraded to the max (except the CPU) that could be purchased for that particular model 5 years ago (or was it 6?).

The specs:
Single-core Intel Pentium M @ 1.7ghz
2GB DDR2
X300M 128MB video card
1920x1200 WUXGA 15.4" display
100GB 7200 RPM HDD
Windows XP Home (all original discs included)
Extra battery, though both batteries are along in age and only hold about an hour charge.  Brand new, a 9-cell will give 6 hours.
I also tore it down and replaced the fan and cleaned out the heatsink, as it had a lot of dust buildup and was letting the CPU get up to 70c.  Now, it idles at a nice and cool 33c.  Cool

The bad:
- LOTS of cosmetic damage.  There are a few hairline fractures in the black bottom plastic.  Plenty of scratches on the lid, and the wristpads are all worn from the silvery color to white plastic.  Basically, it looks like a worn out laptop.  It's also missing all of the rubber feet on the bottom, so it doesn't stick to a table or something as well as it should.
- The charger's wires are getting a bit frayed.  It's just the ground wires that are exposed, but still, it should be replaced soon.  Or at the very least, insulated with some silicone glue.

Asking 5 BTC shipped OBO.

7244  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: June 08, 2011, 07:50:22 AM
This is one of my rigs... the ghettoest one.  Yes, the top card is laying on top of two more.  There's a stick of foam near the back of it so it's not directly touching the other cards, just laying on top of them.  No, the top PCIe slot in the motherboard doesn't work.  Yes, the middle card gets very warm.

Oh, and the fan is for sale, I have two of them.  I'll find another way to cool it if someone wants to buy it off me.
7245  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If you want to make more BTC... don't mine at Deepbit on: June 08, 2011, 02:30:17 AM

I tried BTCGuild, and had issues.  Loads of idle miner times that cost me hours of mining.  Definitely more than a few percent, I would guess around 10%, but could have been way more.

If you have multiple miners running on each video card at all times the idle times are meaningless. I mine two pools concurrently so I don't have these issues, while not endangering the relevance of the currency that I am attempting to acquire.
To each his own.  I'd just as soon have one reliable pool and be done with it.
7246  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If you want to make more BTC... don't mine at Deepbit on: June 08, 2011, 02:24:25 AM
I mine for deepbit, and I'll tell you exactly why I do.

After deepbit was DDOS'd, I decided to try some other pools.

I tried BTCMine, and had issues.  7% stale shares, consistently.

I tried BTCGuild, and had issues.  Loads of idle miner times that cost me hours of mining.  Definitely more than a few percent, I would guess around 10%, but could have been way more.

I went back to deepbit.  Everything was fine, my generation was consistent, always under 1% stale shares (which are paid for anyway), it's extremely reliable now that Tycho has gone through a full DDOS attack and knows how to fight against it properly.

It is well worth it to mine at deepbit for the reliability and attentiveness of Tycho to any problems that arise.  It is worth paying an extra 0.5% to 1.5% effective fee rate in order to have 100% uptime, instead of 95%.  It just makes sense.

As far as the timing goes, it looks like this post is the winner:

I predict $20 by the end of May.

And this gets 2nd place:

$20 sometime in july, at the latest.

I win.  Cheesy

7249  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why I have fallen out of love with democracy. on: June 07, 2011, 08:47:02 PM
I hate it when people refer to the US as a democracy.

It's a REPUBLIC.  It is NOT a democracy.  We elect people to represent us, and that is the very definition of a republic government.
7250  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Are you going to pay taxes? on: June 07, 2011, 08:44:10 PM
"Social Security is an entitlement program" is a huge fallacy that is promoted by the Right wing that many fall for. If you never work and never pay into it, you don't get anything back. They also stop taxing people at $106,800...meaning that somebody who makes $10 million pays the exact same dollar amount to Social Security as someone who makes $106k. If they eliminated that tax break for the wealthy, Social Security would be solvent forever. Thanks, Reagan!

Its funny how the only people to complain about any type of socialized medicine, taxes, etc are from America. You really don't hear any complaints from any Britons about ther NHS, or from the Canadians about their health system, or any other civilized country's citizens for that matter. This is an international forum, and yet it seems the only people pissed off about Govt programs are the far right Americans. Go figure.

There are many elderly in the US who have no families and no one to look after them. All they have is Social Security, and that really isn't enough by itself. Still it is far better than starving and dying alone in the dark, which seems to be the outcome that many on the Right prefer.

A government too weak to take anything from you, is also too weak to prevent anyone else from doing the same. If the US had a weak central government we would all be speaking German right now, or Japanese.

In fact, I advise anyone who wants to see how a weak government works in a real life application to plan their next vacation: boating off the coast of Somalia. If you are lucky you will get the added bonus of witnessing a stong government in action when the SEAL team rescues you.
I hear plenty of complaints from Britons and Canadians about their healthcare system.  Stories of it taking people months to see a doctor over a non-life-threatening ailment.  Not to mention, higher taxes on everything.  Ugh, no thank you.  I'll take privatized healthcare over that any day.

Haven't you heard people in Europe who frequent these forums or elsewhere complain on and on about how much their new video cards cost compared to the US?  A good portion of that price increase is due to higher import taxes, because that nationalized healthcare (and other government programs) have to be paid for somehow.

Sure, the bright spot is, you don't have to be responsible for yourself.  Go jump off a cliff without health insurance, and the government is there to mend your broken bones, for free, on the taxpayer dollar.  The downside to that is, it helps tell people that they don't NEED to be responsible for themselves, because there is no consequence for not taking care of themselves.  Heck, you even see the same thing in the US:  How many people are overweight because they can get disability pay if they can't move their fat tubs of lard around by themselves?  If there wasn't such thing as disability due to obesity, so that obese people were actually forced to go get a job like the rest of us, I bet we'd see a lot less of it.  As it is, we are paying people to NOT take care of themselves.  It is absolutely absurd.

There ain't no so thing as a free lunch.  Or free healthcare.  Everyone pays for it somehow, it's just a matter of whether each individual takes care of themselves, or whether society as a whole is forced to contribute to a more inefficient system.
7251  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Spreadsheet: Invest in BTC or mining hardware? on: June 07, 2011, 08:33:45 PM
Hmmmm, I'll have to think about a good way to do that trueimage.  It'll be complicated to add such a calculation in.  Either extreme is easy to calculate, but when I have to hold the price constant in the calculation for X number of days, well, there's just not an easy way to do it that I can think of.

7253  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Crowd-based Escrow service? on: June 07, 2011, 07:32:36 PM
Interesting idea!

What is the incentive for voter participation.  Here in the US for instance, people don't particularly enjoy getting called in for jury duty.

Perhaps there could be a set-aside in the transaction in-case the transaction goes into arbitration.  Those funds could be used to pay a jury for their opinions.

Potential challenge: If parties are involved in an arbitration, what is to prevent one party from setting up 100 (or 1000) pseudonyms and/or simply getting their buddies to vote their way.
It's possible that community spirit or natural tendencies of some people just "wanting to help out" would be enough to gather votes.  Think about wikipedia - it is very successful, and many users put many hours in to it, despite there being no rewards in it for them.  But, it's also possible that the sense of being helpful would not be sufficient, and transaction fees of some sort would have to be included to help resolve such disputes.

As I said in the OP, the plan should make attempts to negate voter fraud, by requiring accounts in order to vote, and not allowing more than one account per IP and email address.  Also, not allowing public proxy IP's to register.  Also, not allowing more than X registrations in one hour, where X is 1.5 times the average number of previous registrations per hour in the last 24 hours.  Perhaps, even go so far as to say that only accounts that have had a successful transaction through the company would be allowed to vote on any other cases.  And if two accounts suddenly push through a transaction, then immediately vote on a pending case, those votes might be removed as instances of possible voter fraud.  On top of that, do not allow new accounts vote on cases that were already in process while they registered.

There's lots of ways to help negate voter fraud.  The best way, however, is to just have a bunch of people using it.

I think in any case, the option should be given to an overseeing judge or panel of judges to overrule the majority vote, in cases where it looks like voter fraud may have taken place, or the vote went the opposite direction compared to obvious evidence.  The judge(s) would be trusted employees of the company.
7254  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Difficulty estimate starting to go up... on: June 07, 2011, 03:35:29 PM
It's because the price went up over 100% while the difficulty only increased 30%.  The difficulty will now increase very rapidly until it more closely matches the price/difficulty ratio that existed previously.

7256  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Are you going to pay taxes? on: June 07, 2011, 05:27:55 AM
Ugh, social security is one of the WORST examples of a "successful" program.  It eats up $400-$500B of taxpayer dollars every year, and is completely unsustainable.  As in, when I get to 65 or 70 years of age, there isn't going to be any money left to help with my retirement.

Do you have any idea what kind of retirement that amount of tax dollars could provide to each person if it was invested by each individual, instead of forced to go to the state?  You'd be seeing people retire much, MUCH wealthier.  But everyone is blinded by the socialist mindset of everyone needing provisions, instead of people properly planning for the rest of their life.  It just brings the whole country down.

SS is a joke.  And a scam.

7259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bwtween 17-18 dollars the last several days on: June 07, 2011, 03:23:21 AM
TBH, I wouldn't care a whole lot if it dropped all the way to $1.  I'd still be profitable compared to what I spent on my miners.

The real early adopters have that luxury. Some of us paid dearly (considering our salaries) to get in later in the game.  Tongue
*shrug*

I only started just over a month ago.  But yeah, I hear ya.
7260  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Are you going to pay taxes? on: June 07, 2011, 01:17:06 AM
yea, I'll pay taxes.

The free healthcare that I get in this country has saved my life on several occasions... if it was like the American system then my parents would have lost their house long ago.

In this country being poor isn't a life-threatening condition, and this makes a massive difference to the quality of life here.

My education was free - instead of being sold into indentured servitude in the guise of a student loan, I was paid a grant to go to university.

I'm happy to contribute to the welfare of the nation so young people can have the same freedom I had.
What is your tax rate?
