with all the talk about europe, cyprus, euro, etc.. why is gold down 8-10 bucks?
that really seems odd to me. almost like the market has decided cyprus does not matter.

the gold market is being manipulated

This thread went over the 800 pages resistance, so I'm bullish about the post count, we will get to 1000 pages at least.

Well fuck that! I'm not adding any more posts to this. Talk about overextended! I'm also deleting all my posts from this thread. Eat THIS, post-bulls!

My ideology is that banks do not need protection of any kind, it just leads to more and more moral hazard and keeps people in lull etc. BUT if something is needed, this is the reasonable maximum I would expect as a depositor and demand as a taxpayer.

Hey man, you should make the decisions around this place.

Its so strange seeing Lucif converted into a bull.

maybe you're holding the internet upside down?
7268  Other / Off-topic / Re: I measured the density of my silver/gold coins... on: March 26, 2013, 01:17:47 PM

If you would put the spreadsheet on Google docs I might look at it more.

I notice that one measurement for each coin is in disagreement with the later measurements on the coin.

I would add some other calculations.  From the average density of the coin, calculate the weight of water that you expect for the measured weight of the coin, also, calculate the expected weight of the coin given the measured weight of water.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Au-mVSBh0PA4dFRMMTV5RmM5S0ppZDVJSVR6RUROb2c#gid=0

But please note: each row is a seperate coin, so we're talking about 15 distinct coins. I did take multiple measurements for 2 of the coins, but only recorded one.

Have you guys noticed the EUR price at Bitcoin24? It's at 64 right now compared to 60 at MtGox and has been to 69.6 which translates to $89. One could easily make a handsome profit by doing some arbitrage.

How long does it take to withdraw Euros from Bitcoin24 then get the deposit to clear at MtGox? What can happen to the Bitcoin price in that time?

For short-term arbitrage, you just need to keep funding the accounts with BTC and $ then flip. You don't have to move the $ around at short notice.

Problem is: those EUR markets have been higher than mtgoxEUR for weeks now.

When you want to capitalize on this, you should act very fast, not moving euros around. You could for instance send 420 BTC to Bitcoin24 and sell for 63+, gaining EUR 26460. Then simultaneously buy 420 BTC for 61 EUR at MtGox with fiat you have in your account there. You just made 840 euros. A couple of these trades each week and you could give up your job.

you need buffers at the exchanges for that. This incurs time value cost of the moneys you have laying around (earning no interest).

Assuming it takes 5 days to move the fiat from bitcoin-central sepa account to mtGox account and have it credited. So you had 26,000 laying around for 5 days (not even countain a possible wait for the conditions to be right). So you made 3.2% in 5 days (roughly 0.64% a day).

In a bull-market like this, you could've just lent out that fiat on bitfinex and probably gotten more than that.

Also don't forget moving such amounts of fiat every 5 days likely triggers some AML/KYC issues and maybe tax problems.

bitcoin-central.net and bitcoin.de are currently around 62 and 63 also (best asks are €63.50 and €64.00, bids: €62.3 and €63.11). In a recent questionnaire, 67% of germans (as an example) worry about their savings being secure at banks. 54% do not believe Chancelor Angela Merkel when she says: "your savings are safe".

So My comments keep getting removed  as  they are  "off Topic " lol  thats some kind of shat  lol             can no body else see  what i see   they charge ~3-4* as much for  batch 3    and  they are sold out  within 30 min     i can safely say that  THE GREEDY GET GREEDIER.   lame ass asses  jus gotta have it all     well  lets see when only certain few hold a majority or power  id have to say that bitcoin is moving toward centrialization  faster then we can stop it  shouldnt  they want to spread the power out more evenly so that not only certain few have ahold of the market   seems to me that  only SPECIAL PEOPLE CAN HAVE THESE THINGS

the market makes the price.

I regularly see hugely overpriced little plastic parts that probably cost about €0.05 to make, yet they sell for €7.95. Why? Because 3d printing is not yet prevalent and the part is only made by one supplier. The customer is voluntarily paying the price, so the part must be worth €7.95 for him. The market makes the price.

These dudes managed to manufacture and sell to the public the first (?) asic mining device. They are cashing in on that feat and taking what the market is obviously more than happy to pay.

Nothing wrong with that. If you don't like the price, don't buy.

Watch for air bubbles when suspending the object into water. Gently tap the thread to get rid of them.

Clean the object, handle with gloves (non-powdered).

Use distilled water, and read the density from the table for the particular temperature.

Repeat several times. What is the variation between measurements? Is it random, or is there a consistent up or down trend?

Make sure the balance is level.

thanks for these tips, I'll try to do my best.

The variation between measurements was (if I recall correctly) up to 0.03 g. There have even been some outlieres with something like 0.08 if I recall correctly. I tried this on a couple of measurements with 2 of the coins. The variation was present only on the measurements using the container. The simple weighing of the coin showed max of 0.01 g variation.
7275  Other / Off-topic / Re: I measured the density of my silver/gold coins... on: March 26, 2013, 07:25:49 AM
I'm curious to know how a Casascius silver coin would stack up, but the sticker and private key paper would probably throw things off by quite a bit.

I'll do the (modified) process on my 10 BTC silver round when I have some time.

The sticker plus the volume (and paper) below it we could probably estimate pretty well. How thick is the hologram and how deep the "inlet" in the coin for the paper with the key? They weight of sticker+paper we can probably neglegt or guesstimate also.

This is very interesting and I am impressed by your research. But I am sure that such prestigious mints have a very high standard of quality control; I find it hard to believe those margins of error are accurate.

A fake would not be from the claimed mint, though Wink
7277  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: MtGox support increase on: March 26, 2013, 06:44:35 AM
Please make it possible to grab the order-book more frequently than every 20 minutes.

comboy who maintains http://bitcoinity.org/markets tells me that there's a 20 minute limit on downloading any book from mtgox, which is why only USD shows the full book there (as I understand it also getting EUR book would mean that both EUR and USD would have to be 40 minutes delayed). This is a silly limit imho.

Solving this would only be a matter of buying and setting up more computer hardware. Please do so.

When using data.mtgox.com you can fetch the order book more often.

We are working on creating an opensource daemon that will use our existing API to allow you to query locally a realtime copy of any orderbook/trades.

This is good to know. Will stop development of my own one then. Need help?

Ok, I'll explain the "frame" a bit more. You can make it out of a coathanger, but ideally something a bit flimsier is lighter and so better. It does not have to  be totally rigid, if it moves out of shape, it doesnt matter. I use copper wire because its easy to bend and holds its shape.

Here is a diagram:                                                  .------------.
                                                                           |              |
                                                                     ________        |
     Scales                                                         :::::::::         |
     Table edge     ===========================       |
                                                                                          |
                                                                                          |
     Bent Wire Frame                                                 .-----------.
                                                                            .
     Cotton Thread                                                    .
                                                                            .
                                                                            .
                                                                   |        .        |
     Object                                                      |      |||||     |
                                                                   |                 |
                                                                   |                 |
     Beaker of water                                        |                 |
                                                                   |                 |
                                                                    .__________.

The frame can be C shaped, it doesnt have to be rectangular, the important point is that the object is directly under the place where it rests on the scales so that it balences.  In fact it will pretty much hang that way anyway.

holy f..k! That is cool! I will try this and see if I can get better accuracy from my scale this way.

Thanks for taking the time to explain (and make that great drawing) for me Wink
7279  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BETA]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: March 26, 2013, 05:53:50 AM
So why not just add in how long the loan has been outstanding over the last 30 days into the equation.  Then the only way a stupid rate will effect the price is if someone not only takes one out but keeps it for a few days.  The interest cost to them wouldn't be worth it.

I like that idea. However, it would mean that VIR would adjust more slowly to market changes. Maybe the 30 day period could be shortened in turn to compensate at least in part for that?

Unless someone comes up with a downside to this approach, I'd be all for it.

I don't quite like the (partial) profit share idea. It just adds unecessary complexity and it's not what a lender typically wants (correct me if I'm wrong).
7280  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BETA]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: March 26, 2013, 05:41:52 AM
if ppl take loans at insane rates this loans push up the VIR that's not a bug

does the VIR calculation not take into account volume (sum(volume*rate) / sum(volume) or something)? How large was the loan taken at the insane rate?
