Human nature is human nature. People will always lose their keys.  After 21 million bitcoins, the number will decrease in a LINEAR fashion each year.

Unless somehow we humans become perfect :-)

Ok, regarding this nonsense about 256bit encryption being secure forever - that's absolute friggin lunacy!

I have a background in cryptography and a PhD in physics.  256bit encryption is secure in THIS UNIVERSE, but not in ALL UNIVERSES.  According to the most common interpretation of quantum mechanics (the multiverse interpretation), the number of parallel universes is (almost) infinite.

Quantum computing technology is advancing rapidly; a primitive quantum computer already factorized the number 15.

Google and the NSA are pouring money into quantum computer. These guys don't pump billions of dollars into a project unless they think it has some chance of success.

When quantum computing becomes a reality, then 256 encryption is going to bite the dust. Done. Gone. Fuhgettaboutit.

The NSA knows this and that is why they are storing all encrypted communications intercepted from high value targets.  They can't crack PGP now, but in 5 years? 10 years?  It's inevitable.

There are some encryption schemes that would defeat quantum computing, but AES256 ain't one of 'em!
749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Total number of bitcoins will DECREASE on: May 26, 2014, 03:44:26 AM
The total number of BTC will decrease after all have been mined, and that's a certain fact.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing or that it will cause any problems within the Bitcoin ecosystem.  I'm just saying that based on simple classical economics (supply and demand), the price will be going UP, UP, UP.  As demand increases and supply contracts, price has nowhere to go but up.

If anything, I think the Winklevosses are too conservative in their estimates!
750  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin has come full CIRCLE on: May 25, 2014, 08:13:46 PM
Bitcoin has much in common with the Internet.

The internet began as a decentralized communications network with worldwide nodes. The decentralized architecture of the Internet was designed by the US military to withstand nuclear armageddon.

How things have changed.

While the underlying architecture remains pretty much the same, the Internet can hardly be considered 'decentralized' anymore.  Mega-monopolies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft dominate what we see and hear online.  Each year, the internet becomes more centralized for the average user, as smaller companies are squashed, amalgamated, or gobbled up by the big corporations.

Thanks to Google, entire governments can now censor and control what their citizens read online. Think: China.

Like the internet, Bitcoin began as a decentralized protocol.  And while Bitcoin is still fundamentally decentralized in its architecture, in practice - IN REALITY - it is gradually becoming more centralized for the user, just like the internet. How so?

Large companies - pumped full of venture capital cash - are centralizing the user experience.  Buying and selling Bitcoin occurs mostly on large, centralized exchanges such as CoinBase, BitStamp and BTC-E.  Now Circle has come along with the intention of centralizing Bitcoin even more for the average user.  New Bitcoiners who flock to Circle will not even understand the fundamental decentralization of cryptocurrency, just like new internet users hardly understand the decentralized architecture of the internet.  New Bitcoiners will experience total centralization - a central Bitcoin bank like Circle and centralized exchanges like CoinBase, just like new internet users experience the centralization of Google and Facebook from the moment they pop online.

So, while the fundamental architecture of Bitcoin is (and always will be) decentralized, the user experience will become more centralized and more controlled over time.  Hello Big Brother, goodbye Satoshi Nakamoto.

What began as a free market libertarian currency experiment has now come full CIRCLE ...

751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the chances BTC is replaced by something better soon? on: May 25, 2014, 08:00:44 PM
but the market for cryptos right now is so tiny that it's unlikely that Darkcoin or any other altcoin will nudge Bitcoin out of the way.  Maybe some day, after wider option, but definitely not yet.  I don't see venture capitalists pumping money into altcoin companies.
752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the chances BTC is replaced by something better soon? on: May 25, 2014, 07:59:47 PM
Darkcoin is on the move and probably objectively 'better' than Bitcoin since it is much more anonymous

755  Economy / Service Announcements / BitPlastic Bitcoin Debit Card - 24hr Funding Time! on: May 23, 2014, 05:48:30 AM
Hi folks,

Just a quick announcement that the BitPlastic Bitcoin Debit Card just got a LOT better.

Whereas it used to take us 72hrs to transfer BTC from your BitPlastic wallet to your card, we have negotiated a new banking partnership which allows us to fund the card in under 24hrs.  If you withdraw funds from your Bitcoin wallet to your debit card by 11am PST, your card will often be funded by 11pm PST.  It can still take up to 24hrs especially on weekends, but it's a huge improvement over previous funding time.

As always, there is NO ID verification required to obtain the card and NO PERSONAL INFORMATION needed. The cards have no name on them and work in most ATM machines worldwide.

As always, we are striving to offer the absolute BEST Bitcoin Debit Card on the market today.

https://BitPlastic.com

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Moriarty

biggest threat to Bitcoin?

'compliance'
757  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Circle: Bitcoin Made Easy on: May 22, 2014, 05:58:04 PM
RedTea: You are 100% a SHILL poster for Circle. How much did they pay you?

And what you say here makes no sense:
'Current Bitcoin applications require users have at least some understanding of public key encryption, and the system functions like an unregulated trading platform. That’s great for hackers, thieves, and sharp speculators, but it’s not so good for people new to the technology. What Circle has done is create a safe, universally accessible and, at least for the moment, free platform to make Bitcoin more approachable for the next tier of early adopters.'

Come on, seriously?  A user needs to have 'some understanding' of public key encryption to use a Blockchain wallet? Or an electrum wallet?

I think Circle needs to hire better PR reps .. because you're not making any sense.
758  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Circle: Bitcoin Made Easy on: May 22, 2014, 05:55:37 PM
When people talk of circle it's as if insurance is some kind of panacea. Insurance doesn't come for free, and there is no 100% certainty that it would pay out in the event.

Also a good point.  I would be very skeptical of their 'insurance.'  What, exactly, does the insurance protect you against?  Hackers stealing coin from the site? The owner stealing EVERYONE'S coin?  The government nuking the service and stealing everyone's coin if they decide to make Bitcoin illegal as in Russia?  I would love to see the details of this 'insurance' that Circle keeps bragging about.

Oh, and what happens when the venture capital money dries up? Then where does the 'insurance fund' come from?  Certainly not from profits, as CEO Jeremy Allaire brags about not wanting to make any profits ...

Something is very wrong with this service.
759  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Circle: Bitcoin Made Easy on: May 22, 2014, 05:52:43 PM
Circle is everything that Bitcoin was created to stand against.

AGREED!! Circle right now is a joke. In the future, a lot of people will be crying (instead of laughing) when it turns into a scam - ponzi style just like Gox.
760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Total number of bitcoins will DECREASE on: May 19, 2014, 05:01:23 PM
One thing that most people don't seem to understand is that after 21 million Bitcoins have been produced, the TOTAL number of Bitcoins in circulation will decrease in a LINEAR fashion each year.  Why? Because a consistent number of people (maybe 0.05%) will always - ALWAYS - lose their private keys.  This is inevitable.

So with the number of Bitcoins DECLINING (after 21 million) and the demand RISING, classical economics tells us that the price will SURGE.
