Last 2 days I receive tons of email like this

Quote
Dear Mt.Gox user,

Our database has been compromised, including your email...

The joke about, I've never registered to Mt. Gox. Is Mt. Gox in colaboration with this forum? Or any officiel Bitcoin site?
If playing world of warcraft taught me anything is that you cant trust any link coming from an Email anymore.

Every email address can be faked, the only way to be sure is to read the headers.

Am starting to hate being paranoid to everything online Sad.

Only way to find some rest is with linux.
749  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: In light of Mt. Gox... Time for a more professional trading platform? on: June 18, 2011, 11:47:48 PM

Setting yourself up as a central authority with closed source IP on a market might run you up into some trouble. The basic principals behind BitCoin are just going to be against the grain on something like that.

I think a better way to attack this problem would be to implement your code, as described, and create a standardized API - a sort of OpenSocial for market exchanges.

I've been investigating the APIs for a project I'm working on right now, and the lack of maturity and differences in the various platform APIs is staggering.

Having a more secure set of standards, as well as any standardization between the various APIs, to me is more important than a shared infrastructure between all the exchanges. BTC itself is the connecting thread (as are all the other currency entry/exit points, like Liberty Reserve or Dwolla), and a centralized market platform is frankly unnecessary if we can just get everyone to agree on a common API format.
Am not sure how this would "centralize" the market.
Wouldn't they be just another service provider?. If they do good, it could attract other people to do business in the same way.

When you say "trouble" do you mean "governments issues"?. I guess that will always be the bogeyman until BTC are more mainstream.

I run Mac OS X

I created an encrypted .dmg and copied my entire BAY1/users/me/library/application support/bitcoin folder to the .dmg (mounted of course. Then I deleated the original folder. Next, I copied the bitcoin launch button to the same dmg and clicked. No coins and restart of block connections???

Next, I copied the entire folder back to the original location and clicked the original app launch button. Same effect???

What do I do?

If your wallet.dat file is encrypted, then i think is safe but maybe the application cant access it, as long as is encrypted.
Decrypt it in a secure system and transfer the amount you want to use to another account, maybe in like a linux based system, then move it to an encrypted volume.

Also you want to be extra paranoid delete your files with a software like active eraser for windows, which makes deleted files unrecoverable from disk. But maybe thats just me who does that Tongue.

"Voy a ir a minar BTC".
"Voy a ir a acuñar BTC".

La primera suena mas accesible.

Important question, has anybody experienced any security issues with tradehill?.
753  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The thing that will make BTC Skyrocket... on: June 18, 2011, 09:54:19 PM
If only a site like amazon would take bitcoins, the market would explode.

I very much doubt this. I mean - why?

The appeal of Bitcoin is the anonymous, quasi-secure nature of the thing. Why do you need that for Amazon.com? That the government may be interested in your picking up 'Python in a Nutshell' or the Dark Knight on BlueRay?

Why not use your U.S. dollars and their stable prices, versus holding funds in a fairly unstable currency?

Bitcoin will take off when it can do something the Dollar/Euro/Pound can't more easily and conveniently.

You doubt that would happen or that the market would explode?.

Because yes we know amazon doesn't like the unstable BTC. But some day it may become stable enough for them, or some other sites may come first...

But if people are given the choice between spending BTC in gambling, donating to your favorite organization or buying some libertarian's books or inception in blueray, thats when BTC would go from being an alternative to potentially replacing the use of dollars, and the value would go up.
754  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The thing that will make BTC Skyrocket... on: June 18, 2011, 09:23:51 PM
Hmmm, lets see the "big three" of organized crime are: drugs, prostitution, and gambling

In the on line world I suppose we have to add child porn to that.

Somehow I don't think that ANY of those "opportunities" will encourage most of us to support BitCoin!

All of those things happen already with other currencies, but in many places prostitution, gambling and at least some drugs are legal. You just have to put a server in any of those places and problem solved.

If only a site like amazon would take bitcoins, the market would explode.

756  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trojan Wallet stealer be careful on: June 18, 2011, 09:11:15 PM
Installing and using Linux instead of Windows is a great first step to avoid getting hit by these trojans.

You can always use both with a double partition.

But i think we need to start looking at more solutions for windows if we want the BTC market to expand itself. Nice to see some security companies are forming because of this.

BTC success may depend on them.
757  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If your Mt. Gox account has been compromised, PLEASE READ. on: June 18, 2011, 09:01:49 PM
sht this looks bad. This is could diminish the trust on the system on the long run.

Maybe at this point we need security companies getting involved in bitcoins security and banking. A lot of people wouldn't mind paying extra, knowing that their account is not gonna get hacked, or somebody is gonna rob their computer and lose everything.

Also doesn't anybody think is suspicious that all this attacks are happening at the same time?.

759  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet on: June 18, 2011, 08:45:55 PM
From the wiki on Securing Your wallet:

"Backup all data (500MB)
Follow these instructions to backup all the bitcoin data (wallet and block chains) to an encrypted disk image.
1.Open Disk Utility
2.Click New Image and choose 500MB, 128-bit or 256-bit (faster or more secure) encryption and single partition.
3. Save it somewhere you won't lose it (like your Dropbox, Strongspace or whatever)
4. Choose a safe and strong password
5. Move everything from ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/ to the image
6. Symlink it back so the app would be able to use it
      ln -s /Volumes/Bitcoin ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin
Don't forget to mount your image before using Bitcoin and unmount after quitting it.

Backup just wallet.dat (40MB)
Follow these instructions to backup just the wallet.dat file. This results in a smaller disk image, but it's more complicated to do.
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Click New Image and choose 40MB, 128-bit or 256-bit (faster or more secure) encryption and single partition.
3. Save it somewhere you won't lose it (like your Dropbox, Strongspace or whatever)
4. Choose a safe and strong password
5. Move your wallet.dat file to the image
Symlink it back so the app would be able to use it
     ln -s /Volumes/Bitcoin/wallet.dat ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/wallet.dat

Can someone elaborate even a little bit on these steps. What is "symlink"?

I think is just a reference to another file, almost like a file shortcut in windows. One difference being that symbolic link let you reference directories.

For those of you who know more about bitcoins(am newbie here lol) wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of securing the file?. I mean if you are using the bitcoin application the wallet would still have to be loaded into ram, creating another security problem.

If you want to secure your files just encrypt the wallet file with your savings and use another account to use normal transactions.
