761  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Has anyone tried 9mart's pcie extender cables? on: June 30, 2011, 06:25:26 PM
One of the main reasons I bought from Cablesaurus was the fact they offer express shipping.

I'd rather pay $30 and get my cables in 1-2 days internationally, than lose out on 2-3 weeks of mining income with 'cheap' shipping.
You actually end up losing money by waiting so long to get your cards online.
762  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: "Official" Radeon 6950 Temperatures? on: June 30, 2011, 06:06:43 PM
80-90c is okay, but 50-79 is ideal.
763  Economy / Economics / Re: What gives a fiat currency its initial value? on: June 30, 2011, 05:50:25 PM
If you profit on a stock sale you are forced to pay US dollars as tax.
If you profit on a gold bar sale you are forced to pay US dollars as tax.

If you generate any sort of economic activity involving any sort of tangible or intangible goods (such as Tibanne Ltd that exchanges bitcoins), you are forced to pay US dollars as tax (or in the case of Mt. Gox, Japanese yens).

Failure to pay those taxes gets you dragged out of your house at gunpoint if necessary, and imprisoned.
How is that not forcing people to transact in, and own fiat currency?
764  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is Antec 380 PSU enough for a Radeon 6950? on: June 30, 2011, 05:33:05 PM
Even though it will only pull 200w or so, remember you have a CPU, MoBo, drives, fans, etc to power! You would be getting very close to running the limit for that PSU! IMHO, too tight!

Not really. The motherboard, fans, and HDD consume about 30W max. A sempron processor will consume 45W.
A 6950 consumes roughly 200 watts while mining at stock clock frequency so a 380W PSU is more than enough.

The requirements on the package are just a suggestion.
Hell, it says on the 6990 box that you need a 750W power supply to run the card which isn't true. It takes 375W stock.

Even an OC'ed core i7 system with top components doesn't take 750w with a 6990, not even 600w.
765  Economy / Economics / Re: The Fallacy of Mining Cost and Bitcoin Price on: June 30, 2011, 05:26:42 PM
Difficulty also increases with time, even if the same or even less people are mining.

I suppose this isn't entirely true? Can someone elucidate?

It's entirely untrue.

Difficulty will go down if less than 6 blocks per hour are found on average during a 336 hour span.

If people find more than 6 blocks/h difficulty will adjust upwards.
766  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: June 30, 2011, 02:34:55 PM
AndrewMatthew, you say your in this for the fun, yet you are by far the biggest buzz kill on this forum! Doesn't seem like you're having much fun at all dude, maybe you should sell your gear and piss off already, lol.
Haha, true. Brilliant.
I love it when people say they are into bitcoins for "fun" yet they are as hostile as a deprived swarm of bees, spread negativity and stress about price fluctuations every day.

(Which is 95% of the forum. Nearly nobody just relaxes and takes things as they come)

Maybe "fun" is just a nervous substitution for "I just want to scrape any $$ left and get the hell out of here, out of my way idiots".
767  Economy / Economics / Re: What gives a fiat currency its initial value? on: June 30, 2011, 04:00:06 AM
Coercion and credible threat of force/violence.

Bitcoin is not backed by any state or entity with access to taxing power, central authority or a military,
so there is nobody to protect it or forcing people to use it.

BTC price against fiat currency is solely determined by demand (and speculation).
768  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Delays regarding mtGox withdrawals. on: June 30, 2011, 03:57:06 AM
lol @ the lawsuit. I can't believe Apple actually sued them.
As for the topic, my wire transfer withdrawals have recently taken about 7 to 10 business days, but always arrived.

Made one today as well, prob. will arrive next Wednesday with luck, maybe Friday.
769  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: Will you mine at a loss? on: June 30, 2011, 02:33:06 AM
Have to pay for electricity and hardware costs, so when those surpass BTC value, no more mining.

Doesn't mean I'll sell of all my BTC, just means mining wont be worthwhile.
I estimate this to be around 8-10m difficulty if price stagnates
770  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: In guiminer, one GPU in my 6990 works fine, the other has connection problems on: June 30, 2011, 02:06:09 AM
Usage drop to 0% indicates likely thermal throttling.

What is the temperature on the other GPU?
771  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: dual card 6990 and 6970 won't work - advice needed! on: June 29, 2011, 08:53:43 PM
You said you didn't OC, but did you touch the memory?
I had that happen on a 4x 5830 rig because 1 card didn't like the memory being underclocked.

Bumping it back up to stock fixed the issue.
At lower memory clocks the system would artifact and lock up instantly after starting a miner.
772  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Minning with Silicon Graphics Onyx2 on: June 29, 2011, 08:46:56 PM
Maybe 50 hash/s (or 0.05khash/s)  if you program an OpenCL wrapper for the drivers.

In other words it isn't suitable for mining.
773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Mining Accelerator SCAM on: June 29, 2011, 08:22:47 PM
lol @ the fake usernames on the comments.

Nearly everything is in two words each capitalized, like CheBerry or ConfusedUser.

If you're going to go bipolar then at least do it right
774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracked Passwords List Leaked, were you cracked? on: June 29, 2011, 08:17:25 PM
There are probably some kind of pattern in all the difficult looking passwords that the cracker happens to find through cleaver combinations of dictionary attacks, leet speek decoding, common combinations and brute forcing. For instance Ev3rL@NRDX11090821 = Everland (a place) RDX (an explosive) and a number. w@chtw00rdLanimret! = Watch word Lanimret!

I would also have thought some of these were safe, though.

Actually, "wachtwoord" means password in Dutch.

Yes, and Lanimret is terminal backwards.
Using an advanced dictionary attack that also takes in account the use of symbols and numbers as substitutes for words, passwords like that are easy to crack using multiple GPUs.

What you need to use is completely random, non-repeating ASCII characters that make zero logical sense.
Here I would agree with Vladimir; If you can remember your password then you're doing it wrong.
775  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5830 x 4 Mining Rig, When to call it quits? on: June 29, 2011, 08:05:20 PM
I'm not 100% sure but I think 800 wats might initially sustain 4 5830's but power supplies do degrade over time so after running 24/7 for awhile I'm sure it wont be able to handle it.

Depends on the quality and brand.
The higher series Corsair, Seasonic and Silverstone PSU's practically last forever even at high load due to the very long-aged components under the hood, unless you drive over it with a bulldozer.

The "downside" is that they cost $200-$300, more than some casual users' entire rigs.
776  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: FOR SALE: PCIe x1 & x16 Extender Cables, Mining Chassis & GPU Dummy Plugs on: June 29, 2011, 07:27:50 PM
Damn. I'm paranoid now.
Thanks for the heads up though, hopefully it's just a statistically (%) expected failure.
777  Economy / Goods / Re: Gun stuff for sale on: June 29, 2011, 06:52:44 PM
Do you have magazines or 5.56mm/7.62 ammunition for BTC?
778  Economy / Goods / Re: What is a lowball offer? on: June 29, 2011, 06:46:33 PM
I meant figuratively speaking.
Probably nobody besides the two parties involved 'really' care about a few percent haggles that ruin good sales.

More power to them if they deem it worth their time.

One would think adults don't have the time to wait for 3-4 weeks just to save 10 bucks on a purchase though.
If I need something this week, I don't really care if it costs 150 or 160 bucks as long as the item is as described.

But each to their own.
779  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: FOR SALE: PCIe x1 & x16 Extender Cables, Mining Chassis & GPU Dummy Plugs on: June 29, 2011, 06:43:59 PM
I just lost one of my motheboards due to the 1x - 16x extender. I awoke to one of my rigs stuck at bios giving a pre video error with a cosntant 6 beep. Did a bit of playing around and then ended up taking it down to the shop to see what was wrong. So the board is dead. Log shows a very long draw on the line for about 2 min with a drop in current then it zeroed across.
After running both the card and the cables on my meter, the cable was getting such random numbers I figured there has to be a short. Hooked up a second cable, fine, no problem. Back to the first. Super crazy voltage levels.

So lets see. Im out one workstation board here. 3 gpus are now sitting doing nothing, and I still dont know where the order I placed before the damn Mt Gox crash, but to be honest, I dont even want them if they are this bad.

Just thought you all should know

Did your adapter have the extra molex cable injected in the ribbon?

I wouldn't use one without it tbh.
780  Economy / Goods / Re: What is a lowball offer? on: June 29, 2011, 06:22:45 PM
What pisses me off more is unflexible buyers and sellers who have to stretch every penny as a matter of principle.

Ex. 1: You wait 2 weeks for somebody to offer $450 for your TV, nothing. 3 days later, a guy emails you and says he'll pick it up for $440.

Seller insists it's too low and doesn't sell; Losing what might be his only prospective buyer ever at the $400+ price point.
Just to "save" 10 bucks on a used item, & watch it depreciate even more as no more offers come in.

Ex. 2: You are looking for a GTX 580 graphics card for $380 bucks, a guy is selling it for $390.
You try to haggle and insist the price is too high, while it's the lowest offer on the market. Somebody else buys it in front of your eyes, and the next best sell offer is at $430.

It seems the average Joe never counts in opportunity cost. You are losing much more in wasted effort and time by refusing to spend 10 dollars more on a great deal.

You are not saving money.
