761  Other / Off-topic / Re: I bought a stunning engagement ring - directly with Bitcoins! on: April 15, 2013, 10:47:52 AM
Thank you Julz!  We enjoyed working with you on this project and were thrilled with the finished ring.  It is true that bitcoin has many advantages over other payment methods when you are doing business across borders.  It is also true that the quality of clients is higher in the bitcoin world.  I am not sure why this is so but perhaps it is because there are a lot of IT professionals and small business people attracted to bitcoin.  Whatever the reason we are happy to be here and we have been doing business in bitcoin for about two years now.  It hasn't failed us once!
762  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problems using Bit Mit on: April 15, 2013, 05:42:51 AM
I don't know why the owner doesn't fix the photos issue.  That is a major flaw of Bitmit.  It is really unfortunate.
763  Economy / Economics / what keeps the price down? on: April 15, 2013, 05:31:05 AM
1. miners selling?

2. bad press?

3. mtgox's failures?

4. worry of government interference?

5. money fleeing safe havens? (gold and silver are down lately too)

764  Economy / Economics / Re: Why does everyone keep calling this panic a bubble? on: April 13, 2013, 04:43:34 PM
You should get an award for this post.  Thank you- it needed to be said.
765  Economy / Economics / Re: Be brave! on: April 12, 2013, 03:09:57 PM
Bitcoin is bigger than all of these little problems.  Like others I get frustrated that mtgox can not work out their issues quickly but life goes on.  In the end the capacity issues and software issues will get fixed because it is more profitable to fix them than to let them be.
766  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: If MtGox can't handle the load, it should limit frequency&amount of orders/user on: April 12, 2013, 04:19:18 AM
I am not an IT professional but it seems like there are some ideas to improve the situation.  I suppose the next logical question is why mtgox isn't doing anything.  Or why they aren't communicating.  The message on their site about letting the market "cool down" was very bizarre.  I am confused by all of this.  Did they close to update server capacity or to let the market "cool down"?  If they didn't do anything to improve the situation why are they open now?  Opening again and being faced with the exact same problems isn't helpful to anyone.

I am not in any kind of hurry to buy or sell, I am just sitting on my coins and watching.  It just seems that mtgox isn't doing anything to help themselves.
767  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: If MtGox can't handle the load, it should limit frequency&amount of orders/user on: April 11, 2013, 04:32:24 PM
If I get it right, the bottleneck is its order matching engine.

So why doesn't it limit the maximum allowed number of simultaneous orders and the frequency of orders from each user?

Also, when lags increase, maybe bots that abuse the service should have a lower priority than people.

It could have been much better experience if users could execute 1 buy or sell order immediately anytime using captcha.

Amen to that!

A few days ago I submitted my documents and I was #13000.  Now I am about #10000.

At a glance I thought this topic was "2013 Cryptocurrency Bible" and my response was "I need a copy of this now!!!"
770  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: StrongCoin key leak. on: April 03, 2013, 12:08:34 PM
Over the easter weekend due to a bug in the strongcoin interface hackers were able to access all encrypted private keys held on the Strongcoin server. This means for people who had weak passwords on their keys or people who had a lot of information in their clue field the BTC may have already been stolen.

This is a thread to answer questions on the StrongCoin key and clue field leak.

1) what was the bug? what do you mean by "interface"?
2) what are you doing to prevent such bugs from occurring again?
3) do you know of anyone's coins being stolen?

1. It was possible to change the id in a URL and see another users encrypted key. That is now fixed.
2. I'm posting a notice on the site to advise people to use longer passwords. There was already a widget to give the user feedback as to how strong there password was.
3. Yes.

This sounds like the whole source code of the site should undergo a very tight review and penetration testing ASAP.

771  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Production stops 2017 on: March 31, 2013, 02:01:06 PM
Hi
Sorry I hijack this thread but i was wondering.
today transaction fees are very very low, to the point it makes no sense to mine only for this, how will this change to make it profitable, or at least, sustainable for miners?

any idea?
thank you

Yeah, tell us.
772  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: First international online pharmacy accepting Bitcoin! on: March 31, 2013, 07:53:24 AM
Theswisspharmacy is arguably the best pharmacy I have ever ordered from.

I agree.  I used to use 4rx.com.  At one point I had a fairly large order in to them- several hundred dollars.  After I didn't get anything in the mail for several weeks I inquired about my order- "out of stock".  They never informed me, they just held my money.  That was the last time I ever spent a dime with them.  I have complete confidence that this would never happen with theswisspharmacy.  Their communication is superb.
773  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: First international online pharmacy accepting Bitcoin! on: March 31, 2013, 05:13:34 AM
Is this actually not a scam? Maybe I'll try ordering something Smiley

The only problem is I don't really need any meds. Hmm.  Tongue

even the "fun" ones? Smiley

Hahahha I don't think they have any "fun" meds.  It is just run-of-the-mill stuff like antidepressants, blood pressure meds, sexual dysfunction treatments (wait- that's fun!!!), etc.
774  Economy / Economics / Re: Things getting interesting once we past $100 on: March 30, 2013, 12:28:30 PM
I don't like taxes either, but as far as I know, most Bitcoin users aren't anarchists, they are Libertarians (I'm a moderate Libertarian), so why not pay the tax? The government may be to large, but you are still getting a service and need to pay what you owe.

You do not "pay" your taxes. The taxes are taken from you. It does not matter if you send the wire transfer yourself. You do that because you want to avoid more severe penalty and direct confiscation and arrest.

As long as property is taken from you under threat of murder (if you try to protect yourself against the policeman, you'll be shot down, so every law is basically a threat of murder), it does not matter how many goodies you get back. Because whether you like the goodies or not, you are not in control of that. If you like your fire department, good for you, but it's not a result of your choice, it is done without your input whatsoever. And whatever "voice" or "vote" you have is not what you were using to establish the fire dept, but it is *given* to you in a limited way to serve the interests of those who define how to use the budget.

If this situation does not bother you, then why don't you allow me to unilaterally manage your money and buy you stuff without asking you first? If you don't want to give me such right, then why do you allow such right for gov, even though you never have given it explicitly? This just seems illogical.

In the end, being moderate libertarian is like being a little pregnant. Something is either moral or immoral. If you think the idea of gov is morally okay, then how do you draw the line between gov and non-gov? And why the government cannot be absolute? Why democratic majority cannot kill minority? Why certain actions on part of some people are evil (theft, threat of murder), but on part of others are moral (taxation, arrests)?

It absolutely does bother me. However, speaking for the US at least, there has never been a better for of government, and as corrupt as they can be, government is "a necessary evil."

Theoretically at least, the idea of the Constitution is to provide protection from the majority. I believe in a small government, free-market capitalism, a common-law based legal system (which the government must abide by as well as the people) and hard currency. That being said, I DO beleive in a government.

I am pretty much solidly Libertarian, but differ on a few points with the more hard-line (leaning anarchist) ones: I think (reasonable) environmental protection, anti-collusion and anti-monopoly laws, and large scale infrastructure development are legitimate purposes of government, I also don't have a problem with a military. Oh, and also a small last-resort (not to mention temporary except in cases of inability to work) safety net is a good idea.

Not to get off track here, but imagine aviation without regulations. As a pilot... I can't. Sure, the FAA goes too far, but I'd rather too many rules than none.

All that stuff costs money, and since I don't believe in tariffs except in retaliation for foreign manipulation and tariffs, taxes are just about the only way to do that.

Additionally, while I think that civil disobedience has it's place, I think that except in cases of clear injustice, citizens should work through the system. Democracy doesn't always work, but it's the best we've got.

Never been to another country, have you?  America has become quite a shithole.  You keep on chanting "we're number one" though.  How is crime?  Poverty?  Health care?  Human rights?  Civil liberties?  Infant mortality?    How do you compare to Norway?  Germany?  Switzerland?  Iceland?

776  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: I made 3D renders of some Bitcoins and am here to share the images and 3D models on: March 29, 2013, 03:47:45 PM
Thanks I would like to print them in metal, but the metal prints at shapeways aren't suited for the fine details. Plastic would be an option, but it would seriously diminish the cool factor. I think I'll just have to be patient and wait for 3D metal printing technology to improve and become affordable, it's developing quite fast.

Why not "print" it in casting wax and then do a lost wax casting in the metal of your choice?  Gold, silver, platinum- whatever you want.  Fine details are no problem this way.

I can't say enough for Swiss Pharmacy.  I had an order seized here in Thailand and they shipped the entire thing AGAIN for FREE.  It was $500-$600 worth of pills.  This is one bitcoin business that is in it for the long haul.
778  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin online pharmacy? on: March 25, 2013, 06:53:19 AM
I have purchased from them too, actually for years before they started taking bitcoins.  Most recently I ordered meds from them and here in Thailand customs seized the parcel.  They actually reshipped FOR FREE.  And by the way, the owner is Swiss.  I would trust them for any prescription medication order 100%.

780  Economy / Goods / Two gemstones; both are quite large on: March 13, 2013, 12:36:05 PM
I just listed a couple of gemstones for sale on Bitmit.net and since I have had a number of requests for big stones I think some of you gemstone fans may be interested.  The cutting on both is really remarkable:
