Security Advisory for CoinShuffle and Darkwallet

I've posted the security advisory on r/Bitcoin, so far it's just getting downvoted. Can we get some upvotes? It's getting downvoted just because it's from a competing currency, however, they should know that all of the mixing technologies they have presently are broken.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2tmopl/security_advisory_for_coinshuffle_and_darkwallet/

Classic r/bitcoin - Downvote anything from an Altcoin and anything that could hurt their investment. UPVOTE THE HELL OUT OF THIS LINK.

I quite enjoy the thought of all those frothing zealots downvoting my post. I have brought anguish unto their souls, and only through suffering does anyone ever truly learn.

Well the zealots aren't doing too well:

Plus there's the Darkwallet being a centralised browser plugin issue...
Darkcoin's trustless mixing, as well as solving the issues mentioned, happens across a distributed platform of currently nearly two thousand Masternodes, with each one in the mixing sequence chosen at random from the total.
Use the right tool for the job. For anonymity/privacy, Bitcoin isn't it.

Upvoted you too.

Darkcoin deploys closed source blobs. They are not an open source project, unless they have forsaken such development strategies.

Feels like things are about to get really exciting... Lots of new developments coming, BTC back in an uptrend, DRK into an uptrend, Instantx coming....

You could say I am excited....

Just need to see what the DRK multipool pays out today now Cheesy

What`s Intstantx ?

Darkcoin will shortly have the ability to fully confirm transactions somewhere in the vicinity of 20 seconds. This is versus Bitcoin's 10 minutes (in theory) that often ends up being much longer. > than 60 minutes for 3 confirmations not being uncommon.

Watch this short video of lead developer Evan Duffield demonstrating it:

Interesting. Bct down as soon as the forks appeared in DRK's blockchain and returned once they have been solved. Seems legit

I confess.  I hacked BCT and used my ninja skills as a storage specialist to damage their storage arrays in order to provide a distraction from the fact that there was a Darkcoin fork to protect the value of my holdings.

You got me.

Take me away.

I'll come cleanly.

Good work Stonehedge. I guess you're referring to BCT's single Seagate ST-506 "upgraded" to run on an IDE interface (it's why they have to delete so many posts, to save space on the 5mb of "storage arrays"....look out, with a comment like this I'm probably being deleted right now!)

Ok, so I was in bed with my touchpad playing cards, trying to get sleepy, and I switched to looking at interesting articles and I cam across this article.  Is it just me, or does it seem like pure propaganda?  I see the facts presented but conclude an entirely different future, LOL.  Dream on government.  I can't help but think that these articles are to convince the public so they can sell off all their dollars for crypto at the lowest prices, LOL

I think BCT stopped working sometime around 0630 UTC on 22/Jan/2015 so we may have lost a fair bit as the last post before the crash is from Lebubar at 2107 UTC on 21/Jan/2015.

OMG! start-many just kicking  Shocked
Cool perfect if you have more than 1 MN Smiley

Didn't Tante say that you don't need to start the local wallet for upgrading from 11.9 to 11.10 ?

(I assumed she meant you don't need to call "start masternode" form the local wallet after restarting darkcoind masternode daemon).

I think she was suggesting that but you do in fact need to do a masternode start from the wallet. Upon upgrading to 11.10 and restarting darkcoind on the server it appears like there's no need to issue the remote commands, a grep returns a '1' and all seems well. But it only lasts a little while (maybe 20 minutes; not sure) before whatever happens happens and grep is no longer returning a positive response and your MN is offline. Then a masternode start from within the wallet starts it properly and permanently.

If the price of DRK depends on 1-2 people that's quite sad for us all. It's also bad for the currency if 1 holder has such a significant share (no offense).

I'm all for a price surge, but counting on 1 person to buy all available on the market is not the way to do it.

+1

Adoption is what's needed, not one-man walls.

Mmmm....yes....all this interaction with Otoh is all good and cute but when he decides he's going to exit to the tune of similar amounts of DRK as he has orders in at the moment, it's not going to be pretty. It will be whale-dumping-from-hell that will potentially make some of the previous dumps (a la Internet Ape, Ryan Kennedy-Mintpal/Moolah) look tame. People will be screaming and cursing....but that's the nature of having a very big player like he is in your market; when they want to leave, lots of others will decide the party's over too and head for the exits all at the same time. The result: price collapse. That's the reality of what we're all invested in here and everyone needs to realise it.

(I mean no offence to you Otoh; I'm sure you're a hell of a nice guy I'd enjoy talking with. Just highlighting the reality of the situation and that your affairs could change resulting in your desire to exit at some point and it will impact the market dramatically; no two ways about it)
769  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: January 21, 2015, 10:33:35 AM
Good to see all the recent developments and the minor price increase as well.

While a quick price surge would be unfounded at the moment, it would give some great publicity - and since the fundamentals of DRK are WAY stronger compared to May 2014, i guess many more would stick with the coin for long term.

So this is a rare scenario where I believe a quick surge would be more beneficial than a healthy steady growth. Not that my opinion makes a difference in the actions taken on the market - I'll just sit back hoping.

Well that's a business model worth throwing money at right there!  Cheesy

To be honest, these sorts of deals and growth ambitions should be welcomed. They are going around the world educating people about an alternative way to do cross-border transactions without having to go through the banking system which has built a backbone that is hard to replicate and you have to pay a lot to use it.

That's why Ripple is doing well - its allowing small banks to connect globally without having to go through larger banks.

Lonecrouton this is what I'm getting at. Yes they're part of the regular financial world with all its funny money, boys' clubs, Wall Street corruption, etc. But this represents a large amount of investment money coming into crypto. It can only be good in the long run because a whole lot of new people (many thousands) that the regular crpto world would never have reached are going to be exposed to what this is all about.

That's coinbase had $100 million in funding - what are they going to do with that ?

What the christ does coinbase need $100 million for? They're a fucking online Bitcoin wallet, which is a stupid idea to begin with.

I would suggest they're a well connected company with a substantial entrepreneurial spirit that's likely to see them achieve something pretty impressive. Just because they're the people that are using the blockchain to determine when their customers are sending or receiving funds from gambling sites doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing and they're not going to bring vast numbers of new people into crypto. I think overall it will be good and we'll see a lot more focus from the mainstream.

I think your comment is ignorant in the classic way that a techo-propeller head has a very simplistic view on how bushinesses work, what's of value and what's going to be acceptable to people that have money to invest. Stick to what you understand before you blurt out something that just demonstrates how unknowledgeable on a subject like this you are.

So, you have no idea what they need $100 million for either.  Cheesy

What/where is the revenue stream that's going to earn back that investment? What lasting assets are going to be produced or bought with it? Sounds like a VC firm needed a quick tax write-off.

No, I have no idea either, but you don't get the sort of pedigree corporates and high-net-worth individuals involved if they don't have some pretty serious plans. That's what I'm saying, to just make a disparaging remark and a condescending "flick-away" is ignorant in the face of the companies and personnel taking part. DFJ Growth (who're known for investing in disruptive technology startups), Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Ribbit Capital, the NYSE, BBVA (the Spanish bank), DoCoMo Capital (part of NTT, the huge Japanese telco) and they've taken personal investments from former Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit and former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer.

Tax write off - I don't think so. This is definitely a "watch this space" undertaking. I expect there will be some tremendous initiatives that will come from it and also probably some NY BitLicense-style stuff-ups that will be very much on the nose with all of us Darkcoin type of people too. Regardless of the direction they take this is very big news for the crypto world.

Small update. elbandi has found that current version doesn't send all the information necessary for lightweight wallets. This new version fixes this. There are also several minor improvements.

Version 0.9.15.3
  • Sent all necessary information to lightweight wallets.
  • It is now possible to start mining with zero threads, this is useful if you want to just unlock the wallet for GPU mining.
  • Make it clear that hashrate displayed in the wallet is only for built-in miner.
  • Fixed bug when user was asked for password to start built-in miner even if miningprivkey was set.
  • Decimal dot in supply in getinfo method.
  • Testnet: it is now possible to mine without connected nodes.

You can download new version from http://spreadcoin.net/

Regarding the MN payments...
Enforcment OFF = irregular payments
Enforcment ON = regular clock payments

we need 80% updated network to swich from OFF to ON!

Where is the motivation to upgrade?  I upgrade right away, don't get paid.  Someone on v10 stays at v10, gets paid twice.

This really needs to be addressed.

I also updated to .09 within hours and then overnight in between .09 and .10 being released my MN went offline somehow and I must have fallen outside of the 71 minute timer so am out of the payment cycle (which perhaps all of us are anyway given enforcement has been switched off).

I know Evan and the dev team are working very hard and, like many here, I really do appreciate it but think it's imperative the payment processing and fairness of distribution amongst MNs is better managed during updates like this. That there are no hard and fast processes to take MNs out of the network that are on old versions and that many of these same MNs owners are getting paid where people who've been diligent in updating quickly aren't, isn't a workable situation (and MN owners will naturally start delaying updating if they're consistently loosing payments). It's also concerning that enforcement gets turned on and off so easily. Surely this just should be a stock standard part of the MN protocol that's not so centralised? (I know we're still in 'beta' effectively but can't we just leave enforcement on and live with whatever consequences of that as a lesser evil than manually switching it all the time? Forgive me if my comments indicate I'm not understanding this at all).

TL;DR --
Promoting DRK's anonymity feature as closed doors/windows/etc to keep things private still invites the falicious "you should have nothing to hide" argument.
Privacy is an inherant component of any truly fungible currency. Promote the fungibility and people will simply use it, no questions asked--and none needed!

(sorry for the long first post. I've been lurking here since page 1000 and finally just registered so I can contribute)

My Dear Bridgewater, it is a joy to have you aboard--what an excellent 1st post! While I have been touting the privacy virtues of DRK, (and in the development/charitable circles I work in this is still legit), your point is well taken. For general marketing, you are, of course, correct; privacy trumps anonymity, but fungibility beats them both in terms of marketability. After reading your post, this is obvious. I am somewhat embarrassed to say I had not noticed this before. Embarrassed

It is an honor to make your virtual acquaintance. I look forward to hearing more of your wisdom. Grin

Strix

I concur Strix.

Your post Bridgewater is probably the best "1st posting" I've ever read. Like many people, I've been concerned for some time of the difficulty of explaining to average Joe why privacy in financial transactions is fundamentally important. For the bulk of us here that have been around the higher level philosophical debate on the encroachment of government and big business into our everyday lives, we're already reasonably well versed in what that's all about and why taking action to achieve financial privacy is actually taking steps towards arresting the descent into totalitarianism. But a regular citizen who's completely bought-in to the rhetoric and hyperbole that's now pumped into the masses 24x7 that they're somehow "bad" if they want to hide their financial transactions, will likely fight anything they perceive as being nefarious and with potential for criminal intent (and, of course, you no doubt will have read the many for and against arguments for a name change for Darkcoin - an aspect that's intimately linked to this same issue too).

However, if we divert the entire argument away from "everyone has a right to financial privacy" because, although perfectly true, it won't stand-up within the current fear-based mental climate, to "it's imperative for fungibility; to be able to trust units of the currency are free from suggestion of being tainted, illicit or dirty" then we've tapped in to a far more fundamental basis for establishment of a truly workable and lasting currency.

I'd be pleased to hear more of your thoughts and how this concept around fungibility (and the explanation of it) might play out.
777  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: January 20, 2015, 06:48:49 AM

You beat me to the quote Tante--and yes I think you should be scared. 3rd rule of warfare--Never underestimate the enemy. When looked at from this perspective, DRK's chance of long-term survival, as it stands is 0,  Shocked and anyone who does not see this is indeed underestimatiing the enemy. I am counting on Evan and the Dev. team to up the odds by changing the "as it stands." Undecided

Every coin of DRK which I manage to aquire is testament to the fact that I think Evan and the Devs have a chance of success. But consider the implications of the following article: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/19/world/asia/nsa-tapped-into-north-korean-networks-before-sony-attack-officials-say.html. While the battle lines are not exactly the same, there is much overlap. Basically we are betting that the DRK devs are working on a par with the top national security agencies in the world. This may sound bleak, and it is--but it is not hopless. Evan's recent hint that the masternode network needs to be living on top-of-the-line secure hardware, shows me that he at least has an inkling of what he is up agains.

My suggestion on DCT that the foundation invest in large ins. policies has been pooh-hooed, but it is not fearmongering, It is a stealy-eyed evaluation of what is to come... or have none of you followed the Snowden Saga? Huh

What I take as positive from this discussion is that it's now visceral: we are the enemy of our adversarial government(s) only because we want our rights, like privacy, our "unalienable rights to be free". Herein the struggle will take place, in the human consciousness - are Googles, Apples and Facebooks of this world, helped by the industrial-spying-military-complex they helped grow - going to take away our humanness or not depends only on us.

"Without a global revolution in the sphere of human consciousness, nothing will change for the better in the sphere of our being as humans, and the catastrophe toward which this world is headed -- be it ecological, social, demographic, or a general breakdown of civilization -- will be unavoidable."

Václav Havel, Czech President
Addressing the U.S. Congress in February 1990.

Very appropriately, the change of human consciousness does not seem to be coming from dewy-eyed oming and other mantras, but from the cyberspace (damn, does anyone uses that term anymore) and the lunatic fringes, fringes that are so beautifully displayed in the development of this community. I made my choice - I want my Darkcoin investment to grow in the future, but my investment is primarily my statement. If they mange to shut us all up (unlikely) and we end up "loving the Big Brother" and all my fiat would be gone with the alt-currencies demise, at least I will have made a statement: I choose Darkcoin because I want to be free.

Nice quote.  It's always been the "lunatic fringe" that have made all the changes for the better.  Study Martin Luther King Jr. and he's really on the nose and had the perfect way to attack the problem.  He was called everything under the sun, ie, crazy, unreasonable, etc... but now he's our hero.  Or a man with a vision, and the energy can also turn toward evil, as Hitler did.  Why?  Because most people don't care about anything but their own immediate life, until one day they wake up and their lives are uncomfortably squeezed in ways they don't want.  But then it's too late.

I can't talk to my family about any of this stuff.  It hurts them to think deeper than the surface.  It takes people like you, all of you here, to guard the world, people willing to go to jail for the freedoms of people who don't care until it's too late.  And if we can affect a change, a change for the better, then it will keep our world a decent place to live for those that come after us and hopefully they will be thankful, as I am thankful that Martin Luther King had a vision of peaceful acceptance and dignity and his lovely dream speech.

So be proud to be on the lunatic fringe!

I really appreciate your input Tante; especially how you're not afraid to say "I don't understand" something which then facilitates explanations and conversations that we all learn from.

The main questions was in the united states why is it illegal for dispensaries to accept crypto's and whats your source.

The last time I checked (Summer 2014), and it was the DEA, BATFE and the Attorney General's website. Federally there were issues which setup a system where only federal reserve notes could be used as a currency to deal with dispensaries and the product/growers/etc, because banks and credit systems weren't allowed to be involved due to standing regulation. This is because though it was legal at the state level to buy/sell/trade/grow and use cash for it, the banks were held to federal limits and regulations.

The AG later adjusted regulations somewhat, and Colorado instituted a special banking system.

Cryptocurrency in the US is defined at the federal level as a physical asset, and falls under IRS regulation--federal regulation. The federal code hasn't (as of when I last checked) made allowance for physical assets such as Cryptocurrency to be allowed in the marijuana regulations within Colorado. Because Colorado hasn't specifically made clarification on cryptocurrency, law defaults to federal regulation. This is one of the reasons I keep suggesting political activism..

There was an entire forum thread on this very topic, and the PotCoin team even (up through Summer) also admitted the same issue. This was the last time this issue came up. You should remember.. your account posted on the topic several times.

If there is revision, posting clarification on this would be beneficial to all.

Mmmm....PotCoin, you're really going to have to do far better if you want to engender any sort of confidence.

Look at the postings vesperwillow is making. Candid questions, concise comments, well articulated arguments and you're coming back with gems like this:

Quote
The main questions was in the united states why is it illegal for dispensaries to accept crypto's and whats your source.

....poorly worded, terrible grammar. Come on! If you're going to have half a chance of seriously attracting good people here you need to be able to respond articulately to people like vesper and demonstrate you're across the key issues, you're interested and you're "ahead of the game". At the moment you're coming across as....well.....little more than a pothead (maybe that's the issue!)

I lost money on this silly coin; I won't be doing so again. I'm certainly not getting any sense there's much of a future.

If you're even remotely serious you should be posting regularly, have a good deal more awareness of the history of what you (or your BCT account) has posted previously and be seriously engaged with someone like vesper who's taking considerable time and effort to articulate what he or she believes the major issues and stumbling blocks are. This is "stakeholder engagement 101" and you're failing terribly.

Looks really tremendous neutraLTC. I think this integration of DRK into SendChat's platform is a very good thing. Expect we'll see a lot of new investors coming into the DRK as a result.

Thanks! We intend to have the strongest cryptocoins integrated.

We also have a crowdfund going on to help launch our product and create our sustainable business model, more information here:

Yep, I'm right across it. But prior to your involvement I knew nothing about SendChat so the cross-pollination goes both ways!
