Silk Road doesn't sell drugs or guns.
762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] Choose the Bit-Pay spokesmodel for Los Angeles on: February 01, 2012, 02:07:38 PM
I suggest bitcoin-idol combined with march madness. Top 64 in a bracket system, and we vote with bitcoin. Have voting proceeds either go to bit-pay, the girls, charity, or into a black hole.
763  Other / Beginners & Help / Before / After photos on: February 01, 2012, 12:15:30 AM
Could an expert let me know if I'm doing this in the best way possible...

I need to do a set of before & after photos. I want to prove that the 'before' photos came first. So I took an MD5 of a photo which as an example is: 00000000398b240be4ae3661ca630ec695d2a6a5. I put this into this page (#3): https://gobittest.appspot.com/Address, at #3, and came up with an address of: 11111oVqz8zbAY75wyvM3xKn4GxLA6ak, Which I sent 0.0001 coins to, and is in the block chain at '2012-01-31 23:48:38'. Looking at the Hash160 of this, it confirms 00000000398b240be4ae3661ca630ec695d2a6a5 (https://blockexplorer.com/a/1111LL3D)

Later on, I plan on taking a photo with today's newspaper of the same project to prove the work was done.

Would this prove the work is done for those who can not be with me to verify? Would you do it differently?

764  Economy / Services / Re: BitCoinTorrentz.com - Torrent Download Service on: January 31, 2012, 04:51:59 PM
So, erm, I'm having further troubles.  The AJAX popup appears now, as opposed to the situation I described in my last post, but the "downloading" status page never changes now.  The fields are blank for "File size" and all the way down the page, for a very well seeded torrent.

It seems like earlier, the bitcoind.exe server was screwed up, which you then fixed, but now the Torrent download service itself is a bit screwed up.  It's not a big deal at the moment for me, but it might be for other customers.

Regardless, glad to hear you're still alive.  And good for you for taking the Macbook repair into your own hands when you thought you were about to be ripped off.  Sometimes it's best to trust your intuition or get a second opinion at least.

Same problem here, 2 different torrents. I get the throbber, but no stats.
765  Economy / Gambling / Re: Bets of Bitcoin [cross post] on: January 31, 2012, 02:44:23 AM
Second, it shouldn't be possible for one person to win more than they have bet. If I bet 1 BTC that something will happen, and only one person bets against me and they bet .1 BTC, and the thing doesn't happen, they win my entire 1 BTC even though I could only have won their .1 BTC. The way I think it should work is that the person betting .1 BTC should get a payoff of .2 BTC, and the person who bet 1 BTC should get .9 BTC back.

(All of this minus fees, of course.)

You need to bet both sides in proportion to what you think the outcome will be. Example: A die will come up number '6'. You bet 5 on 'NO' and 1 on 'YES'. If anyone feels lucky and bets against true 5:1 odds, you make money in the long run.

Thank you government for allowing me to spend my own money. I owe you one.
767  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This will change Bitcoin as you know it. on: January 25, 2012, 01:55:58 PM
In for 12 months. Good luck.

Need a few dentists out there to subscribe for their waiting room.
768  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The global decentralized secure electronic voting system is up and running on: January 23, 2012, 02:54:25 PM

Why can't votes be sent to bitcoin public address 1VoteForPedroxxxxxxx  (whatever base 58 allows and checksum)?
769  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Interest in a Thoroughbred Racehorse on: January 23, 2012, 12:39:10 AM
Because the thread was bumped, I will reassure everyone that the horse is on pace to race this spring. Waiting to hear word on when the official workout will be, was supposed to be late January, but it might have been moved back.

Jesse and I were impressed with the horse and tried to fast track her into an aggressive schedule, and it backfired on us, costing us some precious time. But all appears to be a 'go' right now.

The stronger bitcoin market is hurting the dividend schedule a bit (and the share price).

Thanks everyone for their interest!
770  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you make your own Casascius-like Coins if... on: January 21, 2012, 07:53:49 PM
Few questions:

How do you print the (mini) private keys on that little circle? Looks like many were printed on piece of paper, then a hole punch was used. If new coins were purchased, can the indentation be larger, accommodating longer, non-mini keys?

If I bought holograms from this group purchase, how would that prevent someone else from buying the same hologram and produce a duplicate coin? I'd like to guarantee every coin that meets the outside appearance, and at 75c over cost, sounds like it is inviting trouble.

771  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Mafia! Join the mafia text MMORPG! Play for free! on: January 19, 2012, 07:08:03 PM
Signed up. I'm liking it.

How long is a minute in the game compared to real life? I'm in the hospital for 50 minutes (gametime), but it has taken me ~ 5 hours (irl), and I'm still not healed yet.

How do I drink a potion that I found on the streets?

Important to note that payments are handled manually, I didn't see this on the site.

Never played a mafia type game before, I can see the potential now. Nice work.

Yup, payments are handled unhackably manually.

50 minutes is a long time to be in the hospital, you gotta watch out if you get shot or something.  I just modified the hospital/jail timers by 3, let's see how it affects the game.

Which potion did you find?

small potion, I have 4 of them. Says medical, restore 100 health. I also have a kitchen knife, and I bought a weapon and some armor.

How do I drink the potion to restore health? How do I equip the knife? How do I put on the armor? I feel I'm missing something basic.

I like the feel of the game, maybe something I can leave up all day and check every now and then.

773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real-world useful application for Bitcoin: Malware/Hacker Canary on: January 19, 2012, 03:28:49 PM

This is similar to the 100 btc bounty I put up for a compromised casascius coin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52004.0

If an attack were to happen, there would be an incentive to publish the breach for 100 btc, users would stop accepting coins as payment, and owners of the coins would immediately redeem.

Question: How can this concept be expanded to know if someone is reading my email, or has logged into my bank account?

I wasn't able to get GPU working in linux, but it turns out my cluster of CPUs was enough to create the address I really wanted :

    1QBDLYTDFHHZAABYSKGKPWKLSXZWCCJQBX

Am I really the first person that has done this?  FreeMoney didn't even recognize it as a BTC address.  At the very least, people should recognize that one when they see it Smiley

A donation is on its way!

cool!

Can an address be made with only numbers?

This problem gets exponentially harder, the fewer characters you choose to have in your final address.  In this case, I only wanted upper-case letters, which limits each character in the final address to one of 24 characters out of 58 (26 letters in alphabet minus 'I' and 'O').   If your address was only one letter after the '1', you would have to generate 2.4 addresses (58/24, on average) to get all uppercase letters.  If it was two letters, you'd have to generate 5.8 (2.4^2) addresses on average before finding it.  Etc.  So for an address with 32 letters, you're talking 2.4^32 guesses before finding such an address (on average).

At 300,000 keys per second in vanitygen, it should take about two months (I calculate 70 days) to find such an address as I have in my signature (on average).

If you now instead change it to all numbers, you've now limited yourself to 9/58 characters instead of 24/58 (10 digits minus '0').  If you repeat the calculation using 58/9, it will take 6.4^32 guesses.  At the same key generation rate, I calculate it would take 3,022,041,992,597,561 days to find such an address.

So the answer to your questions is... no Smiley

So there's a chance...

I like how you sent btc from the address to prove you own it. Very nice.

777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The perfect tool for Bitcoin newbies - get them a Deposit Card! on: January 09, 2012, 06:09:27 PM

I was able to buy one early and just submitted for my activation. Nice hard plastic, 3 to a card. Well done.

Mine came with ford keys, not Porsche  Tongue
778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Vending Machine video - awesome!!! on: January 09, 2012, 04:16:31 AM
Since the machine is obviously connected to the net, you could potentially be ordering and paying on your way to the machine. Just as you step up, the item is right inside that awesome door.

Or pre-order and reserve your item using your 'vendingmachine app' online or on your mobile, lock the buy with a one time pincode you decide on, pick it up when you want by entering that same pincode at the vending machine.

When phone is in bluetooth range, release snack.

780  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Increases in bitcoin prices are bad for merchants on: January 04, 2012, 07:05:56 PM
Keep in mind its a two way street: People would rather work for a strong currency than a weak one. Production & quality should increase in a deflationary environment.
