OP isn't that fraud?  Taking a personal loan or using a credit card is one thing but how exactly are you planning on getting a student loan for "not being a student".

He's probably going to learn more valuable lessons than those that most people learn by going to university. So I think at least morally it's fine.
7602  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Fiat currencies, gold, silver and the US constitution on: March 05, 2013, 10:19:34 PM
I subsequently read that in the US constitution that article I, section 8, clause 5 states that money cannot be freely printed and must be based on transactions of Gold and Silver...

Have I understood this correctly and if so why does the US have fiat currency?

Because, quite frankly, the constitution is being ignored. The USA aren't what they used to be. The ideas of the founding fathers were great ones and make a lot of sense as we can observe know in this specific case. These people fled from the powers in Europe. Who do you think is behind the federal reserve system?

I tried to read a book called "The creature from Jekyll Island". Got about half way through. Quite enlightening. I can recommend it if you want to understand a whole lot more than I could ever tell you about American and World history especially regarding monetary issues.
7603  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: March 05, 2013, 10:11:05 PM
I sold half my coin.

I'll rebuy at 35

I sold a few coins today for the first time in a few weeks. Seems like a good place to take a breather. I'll buy them back this weekend if I can find a decent price.

The fact that many people seem to have sold at least a bit (myself included) combined with the fact that we're still at $40 should make you think.
7604  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone else think this Ripple stuff is just too complicated to ever catch on? on: March 05, 2013, 10:09:41 PM
Does it work if I don't know anyone on the network?

That is the main question that needs answering in a way that gives my mum confidence enough to use it!

Then you have your killer app! Wink

You have to trust at least some "gateway" (like bitinstant, weexchange and many others that will likely pop up). Otherwise you can't own any IOUs (which is the substance of ripple transactions). You don't however have to trust random people and ripple guarantees you will only ever own debt of people you specifically extended trust to.
7605  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone else think this Ripple stuff is just too complicated to ever catch on? on: March 05, 2013, 10:07:23 PM
The fact that ripple is a central entity/business/organization makes it flawed.

What happens if internally the people who run ripple become corrupt?

If I have to trust someone or some business, that is not for me.

No thanks.

smoothie, don't you already trust some exchange with your coins at times?

do you trust yourself?
7606  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone else think this Ripple stuff is just too complicated to ever catch on? on: March 05, 2013, 10:06:37 PM
But my ignorance aside what sealed the deal for me is the amount of money the founders are set to make from it. You can almost feel the greed surrounded by this Ripple stuff.

I see no problem with this. However the project is closed source which doesn't promote trust in the system otherwise.

If it remains closed-source and noone but the "elite" can run server the project is indeed fail.

There's no indication however that they wont release it at some point and I'm sure the devs/founders are aware they shouldn't drag this out for too long.

Before we don't see the sources and can run our own nodes, there's little we can do to further evaluate wether we can trust the system (evaluate exactly how the XRP stuff will develop for one thing).

I suggest to keep an open mind and not judge too early. It's voluntary and anyone can make a competing system once the code is out. You don't have to trust anybody and you can still use your BTC, you don't end up owning random peoples debt. I'm not afraid.

Quite frankly I think people are overreacting.

Am I the only one who thinks this guy sounds like somebody doing a bad Clinton impersonation?  The way he talks is not natural, everything sounds forced.

probably put a yak sock into his mouth or something.
7608  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: March 05, 2013, 09:50:34 PM

lol, "yak socks", "not human", "no easy way to short".

Is that Rawdog???

EDIT: ok, looks like some silver stacker. explains a lot. I bet if silver did what bitcoin currently does he would complain about manipulation.
7609  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: March 05, 2013, 08:16:03 PM
what? a forbes piece NOT by Matonis. I love the guy, but such change is refreshing Wink
7610  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will hit $50 this month. on: March 05, 2013, 07:56:59 PM
the volume in currency says: you can't compare what's happening now to 2011:

7611  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will hit $50 this month. on: March 05, 2013, 07:52:00 PM
I imagine somewhere from $200 to $400
You're doing it rong. You should use the same horizontal, not vertical interval, because it's more likely that the duration the optimism survives will be the same, not the doubling rate. The doubling rate is obviously lower this time.

That would mean: soon.

But I don't buy it.
7612  Economy / Speculation / Re: For God's sake, don't sell for speculation! on: March 05, 2013, 07:44:41 PM
Probably now is a good time to sell lots.  You can thank me later.

And what would you allow me to do to you in case that turns out to be the wrong decision?
7613  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will NOT solve all problems but will make rich people richer! on: March 05, 2013, 07:37:57 PM
Quite often I read naive posts on this forum like this:

[...]
Bitcoin enemies are the bankster regulator old money families one world government collectivist power-hungry ignorant assholes.
Revolution!!!  (Thanks for the summary, molecular Wink )

Please be aware: Bitcoin will NOT solve all problems in the world.

* Bitcoin will make rich people richer.
The establishment is always looking for investment options and they don't mind loosing a couple thousand bucks. Besides some early adopters Bitcoin will mostly make rich people richer as only they can do high risk investments. The advantage of this is that they will also lobby governments and banks.

* In a Bitcoin world there will still be banks.
Might be split key bitcoin-banks but still. A lot of normal people do not like to temper with codes, keys and paper wallets and the possibility of their coins stolen by hackers from their computer.

* Governments will always find ways to milk you.
You think hey, no more inflation. They will come up with some kind of creative new tax so that you will en up paying even more.

If bitcoin will make things more transparent and thus pave the road for political solutions I for my part will be happy.

Oh but it's going to be different! Why? Because bitcoin is a different kind of money (money based on a scarce commodity as opposed to fiat money that can be printed up).

Yes, there will be rich people and some of them will get richer (the ones who make the right choices). But some of the will get poorer (because they make the wrong choices). This is good. Money isn't fair: if it was fairly redistributed every month evenly to every person on earth there would hardly be any incentive to acquire more.

Here is some of the things that will be different when bitcoin become "the one world currency" (sounds bad because of the connotations, but really isn't):

  • Governments (if they still exist) will have to get by with the taxes they collect (there's a limit to that). They could theoretically borrow money, but there would be no lenders, at least not to such extent as nowadays. This is a positive difference because then politicians have to actually do their work and try to act in favor of the people (no handouts possible without taking from other parts of the population)
  • Governments will be forced to downscale
  • People/Companies/Systems making the wrong choices will fail (no bailouts)
  • Free markets will thrive. No distorted/false price signals will make the participants blind. No misallocations of capital will effect actions that are not really desired.
  • The economy will be much more efficient (regarding both the usage of natural and human resources (wear and tear) and the fullfillment of the participants (consumers) needs and wants. People would be happier and humanity would be less destructive towards live on earth.
  • There will be less wars.
  • Entry to markets will be easier (less protectionism), big corporations will downscale (sell unprofitable parts), lively innovative markets with small and mid-sized companies will be the norm (no monopolies or regulatory capture)
  • Simple "saving" will be a possible solution to ensure ones well-being after worklife
  • The world will be a fairer place.

Now, these points are debatable and I couldn't possible reason them all here and now, but I think you can tell that I am of the opinion that the kind of money we use has immense impact. If you don't think so, I'd like to discuss that.

So yes: there will be rich people, there will be banks, there might be governments... but all of them will have to wake up to a new reality. A reality that in the end is better for all except maybe a few, a bunch I naively call "the assholes". And no, money doesn't solve problems, people do. The kind of monetary system they use can greatly influence their ability to do so effectively.
7614  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: March 05, 2013, 03:35:53 PM
Ugh.. lately I seem to have missed all the action. It happens only when I sleep.  Grin

go back to sleep, pretty please!

joke aside: I agree a pause around $40 would be sane.
7615  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silver at 29 ,Bitcoin at 30. this is no-brainer.. on: March 05, 2013, 11:37:05 AM
Stack both silver and BTC, they're both fantastic and complement each other. Silver was money in the US as recently as 1964 so it's easy to convey it's intrinsic value to the uninitiated. Then when(not if) the gold to silver ratio(currently 55:1) gets back to historic norms(15:1) you can swap some of your silver for gold.

+1.

In fact, assuming that your cashflow is positive, I would suggest for now:

Net worth <$10k = 100% BTC
$10 - $100k = 50% BTC, 50% silver
$100 - $500k = 25% BTC, 50% silver, 25% gold
$500k - $5M = maximum 5-10k BTC, rest split up 50/50 in silver & gold
more = have fun Smiley

I wonder why you're suggesting less BTC holdings in absulute terms for high-net-worth people than for the lowest-net-worth category?
7616  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: March 05, 2013, 11:35:05 AM
notice the red bars, corrections and flat parts

yeah. it's a daily. You have them in current chart, too, if you look at the daily. These candles are arbitrarily chosen anyway (no trading days 8 to 5 and then sleeping things over in bitcoin, no weekends either). If I could move them all by some days to the right or left I'm sure you could produce a couple of red candles.

The analogy is not perfect, I give you that. My timeframe is much shorter, too.

Let me ask: What exactly are you basing your claim of unsustainability on? That the price has tripled? That's no indication, because my example shows the price can triple (to $1) and then stay above for a very long time (2+ years and maybe forever). We never saw $1 again, right? Maybe we'll never see $31.9099 again.

Within certain contexts exponential growth is sustainable in the medium term

What are the criteria for such a context?

Edit: And blinded by greed probably
Not at all. I just feel sorry for those bitcoiner that have sold their precious bitcoins at $25 in anticipation of the "inevitable" correction! I think we have lost them. They are now bitcoin enemies.

no man. Bitcoin enemies are the bankster regulator old money families one world government collectivist power-hungry ignorant assholes.
7619  Economy / Speculation / Re: For God's sake, don't sell for speculation! on: March 05, 2013, 11:24:46 AM
But trading is part of the fun!   Tongue

There's not much one can do in a constantly rising markets. Constantly except for quick pullbacks you can't trade because gox lag is in the minutes and trading degrades to blind gambling.
7620  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will hit $50 this month. on: March 05, 2013, 11:23:05 AM
Seconded  Smiley

I don't really see how it can go down - Bitcoin seems to have evolved and many of the problems such as hackers taking off with very large chunks of BTC from exchanges and crashing prices seem to be a thing of the past ...

Have you been with us in 2011?

I can imagine it going down. Huge bad news, continuous bad press follwing, add some panic and voila.

I don't think it's time yet, though. maybe when we reached $225 or $450.
