The ripple concept is a brilliant one. The part of the main arguments against it being an IOU system are weak (it's not real money!--except this is a construct that is millennia old). Its execution leaves a lot to be desired, though. There is no advantage to anyone using the ripple system vs. a more open competitor.
And, those who are going around and saying half-truths like 28 billion have been distributed without noting that 20 billion of that has been distributed to its coders is not the way to honestly market it. But you know that, and you know that the honest marketing does not sound very appealing.
You misinterpret the argument. An IOU can be determined as money. The problem with Ripple and most fiat systems is that an intermediary determines the value of the fiat apart from the value of the original asset. Not only do buyers of Ripple have to content with the risk of bitcoin (changes in protocols by developers) but they are also subject to the whims of the Ripple creators. Ripple creators as a company can be bought, sold, paid off, or controlled by governments. They create additional risk where it is not needed. They are the good smith's who write IOUs that can potentially coming fraud against Ripple participants by changing the value of ripples independent of the value of bitcoin. No good has come from using derivatives in financial markets as they always lead to financial crisis. No. As you have displayed consistently throughout this thread. You have missed the complete point of the OP. Let me repeat the topic. Centralized exchanges have long governed Bitcoin transactions. From the plights of Bitinstant to the regulatory, technical demise of Mt. Gox to the wipeouts of centralized wallets by hacking, we have witnessed costly screwups by centralized players. Subject to regulation and easily targeted by world governments and hackers alike, centralized exchanges have no place in the new economy. Tragically, the Bitcoin community has trashed the very savior of Bitcoin transactions from the start: Ripple. Ripple offers a means to conduct transactions instantly with little to no fees in a decentralized manner. This means no longer do we have to wait for confirmations or trust exchanges to be technically capable or safe from a regulatory standpoint - no longer do we have to rely on centralized merchanting solutions. We can bypass confirmation times and reduce fraud to zero by conducting merchanting on the Ripple protocol. Ripple is just too complex for some. I get it, you are one of those people. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I guess the big colorful pictures on ripplscam.org help you understand their point of view. Maybe I can make a picture book about Ripple. Winlkevoss twins owning 1% of bitcoins. Yes it is a choice they made to buy those coins. I am fully aware they own that many. If they want to buy 100% of the coins that is fine too, I expect that will be very costly. Its a matter of free market demand. They don't control the bitcoin network any more than the other 99% of owners control the network. If the 99% sell of bitcoin to 0 then the Winklevosses lose. They took a risk. But having 1% of anything is not control. Tell me where you can own 1% of something communal and have control over the 100%. Lol The FBI owns 144,000 coins. This is even sadder than your winklevoss argument because their bitcoin stake amounts to 1.2% of total bitcoins and their "ownership" is only as an asset in a criminal investigation that will be auctioned off to the public when the investigation is complete. So they did not purposefully take the coins to "control" the network. What the buyer does with the coins is up to them. Free markets dictates that. Bitcoin price manipulation. That entire article is conjecture. There is not fact behind it. The bitcoin market is controlled by market dynamics. Bitcoin ownership by account. Anyone else noticing how people defend their favorite cryptocurrency like many defend their religion? People always have an agenda, remember that...
Was just thinking about that as I read. I dabble in about a dozen coins, mostly focused in Prospercoin now. *plug* Had some poorly utilized time with the hacks over at lottocoin, and sold all my week one Doge well too early. Learned not to be overzealous. (sitting on a lot of devalued RPC right now!) If you can't consider the idea that a coin you love may have problems, you will soon have problems. This is a tricky game, alertness and adjustment skills are rewarded. Hope things work out here, folks. ...definitely gotta do something about production volume, though - it IS pretty obvious. |

Battlecoin went to cryptsy when they had 4 pages Bat has 99 with no sign of a major exchange Either way, more pages gives any exchange that takes a quick look a hint that the community is larger, and thus their profit could be larger when/if they add the coin. Glad we're almost to triple digits. People have to be patient with Batcoin, it just needs to keep diversifying. The slowdown from the forks set us back, but with more time is certainly surmountable... |

I'm pretty sure mining for Vertcoin just ruined my TRI-X 290X.
What happened? Im just about to buy those. Decided to try and mine Vertcoin, within 3 minutes of using the settings on page 1 my rig crashed. Now it locks up and crashes indefinitely when trying to mine any altcoin. I had zero problems using cgminer to mine other coins for three weeks straight. Also, just tried to play a game (BF3) to test it, and the whole rig crashes immediately. Sounds like it might have heated to the point of warping components or messing up the thermal grease. NOT a good sign - someone's gotta fix the miner. |

This Kimoto Well feature is really cool to watch, seeing the difficulty adjust every block on the hash spikes is conforting, no one will exploit Prosper network.
thats one reason i'm mining this coin.... I saw the same thing happening with cashcoin... and i loved it... its like multipool resistent or something... if they hop on... the fun only takes a few minutes before they leave again...  I too am loving it. Feels like loyalty is being rewarded... Looking forward to Prosper Day... |
