What an awful article. Too many mistakes to take this seriously...

Explain in detail what you mean. I would really like to know.

Here is a thread talking about it if you would care to comment there: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2705112.msg27688931#msg27688931

The thread includes several articles on the same topic (talking about tether).

One of the things that I personally have concerns about is Tether's influence in leveraged trading.  I haven't taken a deep dive into the issue, I've been working on getting our Initial Donor Offering launched.  However, from what I've read they appear to be engaging in Fed style "printing". I'll read the linked thread later today and post over there.

Thanks, I want to get this figured out before I invest too much more.

That’s a touching story. Make sure you don’t put too much of your money or your families money into bitcoin before you read this: http://ventureburn.com/2017/12/bitcoin-market-manipulation/

786  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Article: New York Stock Exchange Moves on Bitcoin ETFs on: January 08, 2018, 03:55:58 PM
Bitcoin is one of the wildest trades in the market today, delivering sharp gains and losses that defy explanation. Trading has been expensive and difficult, with brokerages offering limited access and specialist websites like Coinbase reporting regular outages. Top voices on markets from economist Robert Shiller to JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon have warned people off buying bitcoin.

Yet asset managers have been racing to design more than 10 proposals for bitcoin funds that are currently before U.S. regulators.

New ETFs could make access to bitcoin easier and, in the case of the Direxion product, mean bigger stakes for investors, with a 25 percent gain or loss on one day doubled to 50 percent.

What a load of crap. It doesn’t “defy explanation”. It’s clearly explained in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2705112.msg27687907#msg27687907
787  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banned! on: January 08, 2018, 06:03:40 AM
Bitcoin is Banned in some countries or there are restriction on trading, mining and converting bitcoin into local currency! Will this hamper bitcoin's growth? Also there is an erratic increase and decrease in Bitcoin price! I know its not regulated but why is it that the increase and decrease in prices is too high or too low? Are Altcoins better than Bitcoins or Bitcoin will still be number one since its the pioneer in cryptocurrencies that uses blockchain technology?

I'm a bit concern with this because our local government seems to be looking into bitcoin as well and might try to regulate it in our country!

So? Drugs and hookers are banned in most countries but everyone still likes hookers and blow.
788  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation executive director Llew Claasen said this is a bubble on: January 08, 2018, 05:56:35 AM
Thank you for this update. If USDT Tether is sued by USA government what will happen? will bitcoin crash or not? and in the bottom of the article there is an advise.

"Ultimately he believes that those investors who buy and hold Bitcoin will be better off than those who try to make a quick buck by buying and then selling their Bitcoin as quickly as possible"

So it is still safe to collect and store more bitcoins?

I think what he means is Bitcoin is rising too much too fast. It would be better for people to buy and hold for a long time and let the price rise slowly. Instead people are buying and selling fast. That will cause a crash.

It’s as safe now as it’s ever been. As Gavin Andresen has said many times, only buy with money you can afford to lose.
789  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Microsoft stops accepting Bitcoin as payment on: January 08, 2018, 05:49:41 AM
Joining Bitpay, Steam and a few other companies who early on started using Bitcoin for payments, now even Microsoft stops using it due to high fees and volatility. Even though volatility is normal in all cryptocurrencies, the high price of Bitcoin and it's slow and expensive transactions are making it near impossible to use as a payment option.

As Bitcoin is still facing the same problems for years of not being able to be used as a currency anymore, alternative currencies are eating up on it's marketcap daily and I don't see Bitcoin being on the top spot for much longer than Q1 or Q2.

I hope these companies haven't given up on cryptocurrencies in general and will look into using other ones in the future. How cool would it be if Steam accepted Steem. Smiley

Do we have any data that shows anyone ever used btc to pay Microsoft? Most of the bitcoiners that I’ve met are Linux people. I can see also see bitcoiners being computer savvy enough to torrent most Microsoft products for free.
790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation executive director Llew Claasen said this is a bubble on: January 08, 2018, 05:30:31 AM
Bitcoin is heading towards a dot.com crash and is being driven by a “mania” and “market manipulation”, says Bitcoin Foundation executive director Llew Claasen.

“The fact that you have a 30% in value of Bitcoin in one day is dangerous,” said Claasen yesterday, commenting on the rise of the price in Bitcoin yesterday (7 December).

Speaking at Startup Grind event at Workshop 17 in Cape Town, he said there is strong evidence to suggest that some traders are using what he referred to as “tethers” — a digital representation of the US dollar — to push up the price of Bitcoin.

Tethers were created by a company affiliated with Bitfinex, to move into and out of market positions, he said.”

http://ventureburn.com/2017/12/bitcoin-market-manipulation/

If this is true, is it helping or hurting bitcoin?
Although I think there is a lot of bubble in the cryptocurrency market today, we can still make money from it, right? Grin

Well, sure you can make money if you know when to get out but will the manipulation hurt the public’s perception of bitcoin? Will a major crash make another large group of people that were screwed over in bitcoinland refuse to ever use bitcoin again?
791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation executive director Llew Claasen said this is a bubble on: January 08, 2018, 05:20:55 AM
“The issue is that, like any investment vehicle, the value of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies (forms of digital money) is subject to manipulation by large entities that have a stake in it, especially large-scale traders. The cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex is the main actor to think about here.

Bitfinex’s CEO is also the CEO of a company called Tether Limited, which issues tethers (also known as USDT), a pegged cryptocurrency; that is, the tether’s value is pegged directly to that of the U.S. dollar. To do so, Tether commits to keep the dollar equivalent of all USDT value in reserves at all times. Tether offers a way to own and move fiat currency across different cryptocurrencies and exchanges without the need to convert crypto assets into dollars. That means transactions are fast and cheap, yet the price of the currency is as stable as the U.S. dollar, in theory.”

They won’t be selling bitcoin, they’ll be selling futures. It’s a horse or grayhound race track. When you bet on a pony at the track you’re not buying a pony and your bet doesn’t make the horse owner any more wealthy. It just puts money in the pocket of the racetrack owner and the government where the track is located.

I'm not sure I follow. How often do you see gold and oil ETFs diverge significantly from the underlying asset? You can trade the swings just like any other swing trader in the spot markets, but the third party exchange risk is much lower. Sure, there are trading commissions, but it's customary in the regulated market to charge flat fees, so it'll be much cheaper to trade than the underlying spot markets. And yes, there are tax revenues, but what else would you expect here?

Bull Funds
The three ‘Bull Funds’ are categorized as 1.25X, 1.5X and 2X, offering 100 percent, 150 percent and 200 percent returns on the given contract.

Bear Funds
As the name suggests, the ‘Bears Funds’ allow investors the chance to leverage against a decline in the value of Bitcoin. The two funds offered are 1X and 2X, offering 100 percent and 200 percent gains should the contract meet its target on the given day of trading.

Too bad, no VelocityShares equivalent. A sweet long term 3x entry (tax deferred via retirement account) could be epic.

My point is that it will do nothing for bitcoin. Futures trading is a parasite on any industry involved.

797  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bank of America getting into crypto on: January 07, 2018, 08:06:42 PM
BofA is not getting into crypto. This is old news from 2014. It was believed that BofA did this years ago to help the US government. If the government ever decides they want a crypto exchange shut down they can do it using this patent violation. The patent is very vague in composition and could be used against any exchange.
