782  Economy / Marketplace / Re: A message for BiddingPond sellers. on: May 24, 2011, 05:22:30 AM
Well, here's the thing.  I put a new Dell Streak 7 tablet up starting at 0.99 BTC, no reserve, high bidder gets it.  Same thing I usually do on ebay.  Well there are so few users /bidders on BiddingPond that it sold for $20 BTC.  Great for the buyer, not so hot for me.

I'm not giving up on it yet though.  I should perhaps start with some cheaper items.
A low start price (1 btc) plus a reasonable reserve is a way to try to sell a valuable item on biddingpond.  People DO bid on reserve auctions, but not as much as reserve free auctions.  Unfortunately people often set the reserve too high as well.

reserves are bullshit, and an insult to bidders.  "come on little ones - your bid is worthless, but you can do it!  oops!  your bid is real now - better retract it..."

man up.  if there's a price below which you are not willing to sell, then that should be your starting bid.

i've been a successful book dealer on eBay since very shortly after its beginning.  i've never offered an item with a reserve.

and i've never bid on one, either.

Bitcoin Block Explorer also got a big spike in traffic starting on the 16th. 2,599 unique non-bot IPs on the 15th -> 7,832 unique non-bot IPs on the 16th. BBE is now serving ~400,000 pages per day (mostly from bots and sites like BitcoinCharts).

a lot of the Block Explorer hits are probably our friendly local neighborhood alphabet soupers, trying to connect the dots.

newbies & etc. will not have that much interest.

You think they wouldn't just get all the data and search, sort and analyze offline?

well yeah - but there are hundreds (literally) of the soupers - and dozens of sub-soupers in each, all of whom perceive that they are competing with each other.

sure they download the data.  most likely on a regular schedule, every hour of every day.  thousands of downloads a day...
784  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Do I have to open the bitcoin client to receive BTC from others? on: May 24, 2011, 04:48:55 AM
you will receive any Bitcoin sent to you - in the Blockchain.

but it won't be in your wallet (i.e., it won't be spendable) until you run your client and download the Blockchain into it.
785  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Vote to get bitcoin on Fox's Freedom Watch! on: May 24, 2011, 04:46:19 AM
oh good lord.

right next to the encyclopedia entry for "Bread and Circuses" is a picture of Roger Ailes.

can anybody seriously believe that the channel of the republican party is going to boost - in any way - something like Bitcoin?

...a direct competitor to the USD, which is rather favored by their listenership - and basically controlled by their owners and friends?

c'mon...

787  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: POLL: Are you still buying mining equipment? on: May 23, 2011, 05:35:56 PM
right now i'm tweaking all my miners - latest miner versions, overclocking, case cooling, etc.  i've boosted my Mh/sec rate almost 20% since the difficulty rise - practically as good as getting a new miner.

so no hardware right now.  we'll see how difficulty goes.

and frankly, given the speed at which things move, i'm going to wait a couple weeks to see what happens on the FPGA front.  my miners have paid for themselves many times over, so i can afford to look at re-investing if the FPGA possibilities are good.

i guess my answer isn't in your poll...

now that is fascinating...
789  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Upgrading a rig for under $500. What are my options? on: May 22, 2011, 05:32:28 PM

sure.  theoretically.  but it's all about the case and the cooling.

i wouldn't try that one.

get the MSI with 5 PCIe slots - and a full-tower, 9-slot case, with plenty of room for fans.
790  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is rig building still profitable? on: May 22, 2011, 05:01:33 PM
Anonymity.
Transfer of value without fees to central (i.e., banking) authority.
Unstoppable transfer across borders.

All excellent qualities but do you think they are worth 95% of the value of the bitcoin?

they are if you require them.
791  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 05:00:29 PM
Anyone saying he should go solo...
Probably never have studied statistics...
Or are just some degen gambler...

Go read up on Poisson distribution...
You be suprised how huge variance is...
He could mine for week++ with no blocks...
At this difficulty level...

Actually going solo...
Could break his operation...
Unless he is degen gambler...
3% for reduced variance is nothing here...

If he mines 8.5=10 Gh/s his average for hitting a block is around 1.5 days. Going a full week or more without hitting a block would be statistically insane. If I had half speed I would go solo instantly.

As Vladamir said, the hardest part is not sitting there watching it every minute and worrying that it's not getting anything.

agreed.

i was solo when difficulty was 90 whatever.  when it hit 127,000, i put half my miners in a pool.  at 157,000, i put 'em all in a pool.  i'm running at 2.1 Gh/s right now.  if i get up over 5 Gh/s, i'll go solo again, as long as difficulty stays under 350k.

pool vs. solo is all about the temperament of the miner.  got patience?

vladimir is correct.
792  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 03:04:21 PM
linux, yes.

and take the MemClocks down, to reduce heat.  with AMD CC 11.5 and SDK 2.4 (required with 6xxx series cards for best performance), lowered MemClocks may not increase the M/h rate (might even lower it by a percent... OH NOES!), but it will dramatically reduce heat output.

try DiabloMiner - it's just as "quick to test and play with", if not quicker; and usually faster.

with linux, use AMDOverdriveCtrl for clocking - it's not as crazy powerful as some of the windows utilities, but it'll do; and you're much less likely to take the card past a point where you can damage it.

if you're really set on spending major dough to put water-cooling on all those machines, then do  it smart - get longer tubes, and use external (not case-mounted) radiators.  hang the radiator and fan bundle outside a window on brackets.  then you won't need to spend anywhere near as much on AC.
793  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 05:53:57 AM
Question - why does common concensus seem to be that he should go and mine solo wiht 7.5 Ghash/sec?

It's not like his volatility doesn't lessen a ton like most of the rest of us, and a even a 2% fee (there are several with lesser fees) isn't a huge cut. Why wouldn't he want to mine in a pool?

because the main reason to mine a pool is to even out variability.

with that kind of Gigahashage, he has no variability to speak of.
794  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 04:58:21 AM
Hmm... I will need to recalc this then. Any difference between slush/deepbit/etc? I will need to run the system for another 24-48 hours to get a better baseline.

Thank You,
Paul

with 12 6990s, you should be getting about 9 Gh/s already - that's at 750 Mh/s each.

what are your boxes made out of?  OS, mining program, etc...

"...unique form of domestic terrorism...", huh?

well, EFF takes Bitcoin donations.

we probably oughtta get the ACLU on that bandwagon, too.

we'll all be on the darknet, by 'n' by...
796  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 04:40:01 AM
No, it's really 7500MH/s. I am running 6x machines with 2x 6990s in each machine and I plan on expanding to 4 more machines next week. The hard part is keeping them cool enough - so I am moving them to a facility that has a good A/C and enough power (each machine takes ~10A @ 110V).

I will try solo mining since I am only at ~15BTC/24 hour period.

Thank You,
Paul

even minus 2% for slush's pool, with 7.5 Gh/s running pooled, you should be somewhere around 30BTC/day...
797  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining at 7566.57 MH/s... should I go solo, etc? on: May 22, 2011, 04:25:27 AM
< shrug >
if the (old) Bitcoin Calculator is wrong, then it's wrong.  but that's what it says for 10 Gh/s.

We are both right. I quoted numbers for 7567 Mh/s. For 10Gh/s it is indeed ~29 hours.

ah, of course.  sorry - my mind was busy being boggled by the idea of 10Gh/s in my living room...
798  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Upgrading a rig for under $500. What are my options? on: May 22, 2011, 04:17:03 AM
Look at both 5850 and 5870. Availability and pricing can make the 5850 more palatable than a 5870.
both worth money's.
and 69xx's too.
but im prefer 5xxx for sentimental value/reasons as well as for less power-consumption/per FPS/MH.

i prefer the 58xx as well - but not for sentimental reasons.  they have more stream processors, lower power requirements, and are cheaper for a given AMD performance-point.

unfortunately, they're getting pretty hard to find.  accept no backorders...
799  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Did I reach the limit of how many machines I can run at my apt? on: May 22, 2011, 04:12:38 AM
if you have a dishwasher and a garbage disposal, they are probably both on separate circuits.  i use both - they're both 15 amp.

check your fuse box - it'll be labeled (legal requirement).

if you have a landlord-provided AC unit, that too will be on a separate circuit.  but with summer approaching, you may want to keep that option open.
800  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Upgrading a rig for under $500. What are my options? on: May 22, 2011, 04:08:51 AM
Get rid of your card and get a 5870.  Everything else should be fine.  If you want to run multiple cards you will have to either replace your motherboard get a x16 card to work in a x1 slot using an adapter and/or modifying the hardware and then you may also have to upgrade your power supply, so the cost goes up quite a bit.  Just getting one good GPU is your best ROI here.

yup.  what he said...
