Yeah if you can not a get a good power deal in under a close drive (2hrs or less). I do not recommend mining.

I am glad I required all coin withdrawals to use the auth. app .

...

I fucking hate all 2fa bs as it weakens my security.

Huh

microsoft auth can be on any phone

not the same as sms text 2fa

The cell you use for the microsoft app  basically makes the code like a yubi.

It's still 2FA; two-factor authentication. TOTP based specifically, not SMS based.

Quote from: Microsoft app
The Microsoft Authenticator app also supports the industry standard for time-based, one-time passcodes (also known as TOTP or OTP).

This is where the confusion lies. 2FA saved your btc, don't hate on it  Wink

Sounds like TOTP

Ahh just too stressed

SMS/text 2fa = shit

my bad.

and yes microsoft/auth = save the day.  it is on a cell that I do not share the number with anyone.

On that topic...

I'm waiting on a "small" order of 30 S9k miners...  Cool
Got'en for very cheap

Any suggestions on an alternative firmware?
Any way to bypass the signature lock (if they come with the latest-locked Bitmain firmware installed)?
Ideally I'd like to have them pop up in my current HIVE account (HIVE has a "client" firmware for that, but I first have to bypass the sig-lock)

Thanks

Nope s9k are very very very special you are Locked in to bitmain firmware.

Hint disconnect the middle board on your troubled units. the psu part you can leave the data cable attached.

keep all of them very cold.

they run hot.

I had four of them they still work.

But 2 need the middle board not attached.

right now the ported phone has other accounts that I am Locked out of til I recover the phone via reporting back to be.

then signing onto the other accounts  changing out to some other Security .

I can't do Id me as my driver photo is old (fucking covid I can't go to DMV for new photo) and is not a good match for a selfie.

So the other accounts (no $$$ or coin involved) allow 2fa via sms text or id.me

Since the phone number is ported I can't get in to do another phone
and id me is like fuck you.

You know what really pisses me off is I am the only person on the planet with my name as it is rare.  Yet 2fa is keeping the only person in the world with the proper name and address out of accounts.

as I said these do not involve $$$ but I want to alter the corrupted phone number and would lock myself out of the accounts for weeks if I report this or wait and hope o get my phone back long enough to fix those accounts.  and not a single account  was ever on the phones just on a fully secured pc
7948  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2021, 04:54:30 PM
most of my coins are in hardware wallets.

I just happened to have the large sum on coinbase prepping to spend on mine expansion.

Oh, sorry for the bad assumption. Glad to hear that you use hardware wallets.

Personally if I'm going to liquidate a large amount of btc, it gets moved to an exchange and sold within minutes of hitting it. I just can't trust leaving any amount there for any longer than to do the sale transaction.

yeah that is my norm. but with my bro-in-law getting sick with dementia and running back in forth from NJ to NY to NJ

the coins had not cleared when I left to go to his home. They cleared and the hack started while I was at his home.

I have no phone or pc access to coinbase at his place. (to be more secure)

so it was just leave him at 3:30 pm 45 minutes into the breach and hope they did not get past my last line of defenses.

Got home by 6:15 pm and had

I am not quite sure how they ported the phone.

I suspect they used tracfone had the cell number  hoped by getting the email

that the email linked to tracfone and to coinbase was the same

so if they hack just the email

they could try to port the cell to their carrier.

then get into coinbase change password and use 2fa to allow withdraws and alter the email

...
Best to buy a burner phone set up google to microsoft auth.

the coinbase account does not know that phone number so no one can port it over to another network.

Sorry that it happened, but I cannot figure it out from your description.
coinbase did have some SMS troubles last May or so, maybe it is somehow related.

The ported phone would jeopardize both methods (text or Authenticator), wouldn't it?
what's the "email linked to tracfone"? why there is such a thing?

Phone a the ported phone was a tracfone.

I do have an email/phone account so they could have ported the phone from trac phone to Verizon mobile by entering my cell number

They could have hacked the email using recovery to the phone.

This gave them the phone and the email.

they use that to go after the coinbase

they change the password.

they find that no changes in the account or withdrawals can be done without

a code that is only available on a phone that no one knows the number.  It is not 2fa. and gives a six digit number every 60 seconds .

They could have been say with draw .25 btc and putting in random six digit  numbers as I was driving home

( I think they get locked out after 3 wrong numbers). so I could have lost .25 btc if they got lucky.

I think my error was the email recovery was linked to the cell

which let them get into the email.  That email is 22 years old I changed the password.

I am playing with fake hacking of the now drained (by me) coinbase account to see if they just needed the have the phone number ported to be able to change the coinbase password.

I also had the account set to need the auth app for any withdrawal (thank goodness)

I am genuinely sorry to hear about this philipma. I'm also glad and relieved to hear that no coins were stolen.

What am I about to say next, I hope you don't take as rubbing it in or anything. You have to decide what works best for you. But I can honestly say that if you had had your coins on a hardware wallet like a Trezor, none of that would have happened (provided you set it up correctly, have your security protocols right, and don't fall for the phishing scam of going to a fake Trezor website, etc.).

I'm seriously baffled after all the talk and confirmation over the years about how great and solid hardware wallets are, that people still refuse to investigate and use them.

In fact, if someone has a legit link of someone getting their coins stolen from a Trezor that wasn't a phishing scam, please link to it. I'd be curious to read it. So far I have come across zero.

most of my coins are in hardware wallets.

I just happened to have the large sum on coinbase prepping to spend on mine expansion.

Since there are four of us and we are buying a large amount of gear I had four shares of coins prepped to convert to fiat to buy the order.

tracfone confirmed the phone was ported to verizon. it was a locked tracfone which should not have ported over  yet it did.

I did notice three attempted logins to my email over the last few months.

I am glad I required all coin withdrawals to use the auth. app .

and that it was on a different unknown to anyone phone number.

as jjg said other moves are doable on an account secured the way I did but my coinbase does not have coinbase pro.

I fucking hate all 2fa bs as it weakens my security.

I intentionally only use a pc. zero phone access to
pay anything.

I am strictly old school. but these fuckers force shit on you.

synched accounts etc.

If i was setup that way I could have lost a lot.

yubi is decent.

I ended up selling all the btc on the three paypal accounts.
sent money to bank.

Got very lucky today.

if I was simple 2fa all would have been gone.

Running the business I sometimes have all the coin for all of us. Especially if we are set to buy a lot of gear.
I usually keep 90% of my stuff  offline in hardware wallets . but it was end of year and we are expanding the mine. so I had a lot in the account.

Oh coinbase did offer me the chance to lock account. and i was on the road no real access.

but i know locking the account without trying to get into it would be a mistake.

since this account is pc based i thought maybe they could not do much. so  drove home not telling the wife that we may have lost good money.  got home change the email password
changed the coinbase password changed the coinbase phone  and drained the account.
then drained the paypal accounts.
7952  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Is it safe to test run S9 Antminer with 110v? on: December 22, 2021, 04:31:41 AM
Based on what I heard before there is someone successful running s9 with 110v but they disconnect two hashboard and only mine with one hashboard.

Don't run all hashboard with 110v because it can melt wires and connectors or if you don't want to have a burnt or broken power supply.

if you have the bitmain psu and it is good it can do around 800 watts at 110 volt and 1300 watts at 220 volt.

so you should certainly try one board at a time. you should have zero issues doing this.

once you test all three boards one at a time at a few speeds

say

+1th
stock
- 1th

which should be

4.7th
4.4 th
4.1 th

for each board

get back to us.

Shit makes business harder.

2fa with a simple text 6 digits

and cross linked to your email

would have meant me losing over  0.25btc

the coinbase account does not know that phone number so no one can port it over to another network.

MY name is well known thus the attack was on purpose by such a long list of possibles.

I have sold gear
I have escrowed
I have sold coin
I have traded coin

Many know my real name
Many know my email
Many know my coinbase account email

I could list 100 possibles that would think I may have $$$ on coinbase. Take a shot.

Never mind the PayPal customers ugh.

This will take time to fix.

7954  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2021, 02:53:22 AM
So they have the phone number

they may have hoped a simple 2fa text would have given them full access to the coins and cash at coinbase. And switching the email. But with my security settings not being 2fa linked to the cell associated with coinbase it was a no go.

So don't use 2fa.

Thank god as I had BTC and  $$$ to hurt
7955  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2021, 02:14:54 AM
I was lucky I had one more roadblock to stop them.

I wonder if it is inside work with :

a guy at coinbase
a guy at tracfone
a guy at Verizon

set when coinbase account gets a bit higher say 10k or 20k or a higher level.

of course I now need to alter countless other shit

Wicked. Was it a MFA attack or an attack on the portable wallet?

the cell phone was ported to Verizon {this is impressive as no-one has access to phone)

they had my email with access {impressed with this}

This let them change my coinbase password.

But My coin base withdrawals are not enabled by that cell or email so they could not with draw. Or alter my coinbase email address.

So lots of shit is changed now.

I think I understand after both of your clarifications. Thanks for the clarification. Still, I think the Trust System should not work like this (In my opinion).
In my personal opinion, I think if you had a deal with anyone and you had a chance to lose your money but the guy kept his promises. You can leave Positive feedback on his account. It will help people to know about his transaction-related fairness. On the other hand, If you Trust Someone's Judgment on others (Specifically in the forum). You can add him to your Trustlist. There are two different systems and each system should have its purposes. If both systems work similarly, There is no need to implement two different systems to judge people. Still, this is my personal opinion.

Do you guys think it's time to lock this thread or let it open for further discussion if anyone finds it interesting?

Well it shifted a lot. Merits were created. Trusting and marking a person for trust has altered greatly.

Flags were created the rating systems are fairly complex.

Back in the day we had pos, neg, neutral no flags no merits.

Trust was really abused. Retaliation trust was big.

Plus fights and arguments caused lots of trust abuse.

Of course now if I give a new seller a merit I have to watch that people do not think I am trusting them and it is safe t9 buy from them.

I some times merit sellers if they are newbies that work at a company I know simply to aid them in trying to sell.
But I am not trusting them or giving them a feed back that says they are a good seller.

The old way was simpler in the case of that example.
7959  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why use a PPS pool when there are large PPLNS pools? on: December 21, 2021, 04:51:48 AM
A large miner may not want the variance risk of pplns.

remember that witholding / accidental bad software has hit pools for large amounts of coins.

A pps+ pool paying a big player daily means no variance risks.

the risk for that player is one days payment maybe two. as they would simply pick up and move to a different pool.

also when doing projections pps will have more stability.

and as I said if a big player is sending a lot of hash to viabtc and insists on pps+ vs pplns I am thinking viabtc may take on the big guy and give him what he wants.

This still just makes no sense to me. The "risk" we're talking about is getting >2% less reward in a year once every 10 years. So for the small guy, you'd pay an additional 2% all 10 years to avoid paying 2% 1 out of 10?

For the big guy, they'd pay maybe an extra 0.5% or 1% 10 out of 10.

0.5% for 500PH is ~$325K a year in today's conditions.

So the same guy that is putting up 10s of millions to buy miners, infrastructure, power contracts, etc..., in a brand new super volatile market, is worried enough about 2% less once in 10 years to pay $325K every year?

Mining is a risky business... it just doesn't make sense to me to give up so much profits for a "drop in the bucket" of additional risk.

Like I said many large pools have had long streaks of “bad” luck

There is no bad luck with pps+

If you are earning 100,000 a month and burning 95,000 during tight times your profit is 5 k

Now if you have variance you easily can drop under and into the red with bad luck.

Running at 95% luck will make you at a loss.

Although  if things are good like right now and you want to risk variance the profit margin will cover it.

7960  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: hire a engineer to build me cooling system like a fridge/freezer on: December 21, 2021, 03:21:25 AM
Kd5 mines what coin?

btc good

any other coin this belongs in altcoin section.

Now pretend it mines btc.

what is the watts?

okay looked it up 🆙 it uses 2250 watts so lets pretend you are asking about the s17 which uses same watts.

two units use 4500 watts.  and that is about 21000 btus of heat.

If you are doing two units I would figure you need to feed 1100cfm in and 1100cfm out.

do you want to feed it cold air you can from an ac like this. wait for link

https://www.build.com/product/summary/1196549?

outside > air ac > box with two miner > vent outside

so above is costly due to power user for the ac

it will not have condensation issues.

it will cost power an ac will burn $$

the refrigerator idea is worse
