81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 2 x 7970 problem, need help on: December 19, 2013, 10:31:03 PM
Maybe it's for 3GB? /3... = 1866 which is still a lot :/

No, I realize now, it's because it's 1375 memclock x GDDR5 memory which equals to 5.5Gbps
Still dont get it..

AFAIK GDDR5 mem => 4 transfers per clock => real 1400MHz clock is "effectively" like 4x1400MHz = 5600MHz if there was one transfer per clock.

hodlcoin already exists. (= btc)  Roll Eyes

i don´t buy althodls.

hodling needs practice - and my doctor told me not to carry and hodl heavy coins/objects.

So hodling litecoins seems like a good start. Wink

Newest settings are below doesn't seem quite as good as -I 12,12
Also I am using Afterburner to change voltage to 1.1, 1.1 however it doesn't always seem to stick sometimes the second gpu will go back to 1.17 volts???
If I keep pushing gpu 1 back to 1.1v the Kh/s for both gpu's goes up.

If the voltage jumps up in between it means in my experience that you don't undervolt properly. In other words, the automatic voltage regulation of the card kicks in and sets the voltage depending on your clock speed - if the clock goes up, voltage is automatically increased. Likewise you can easily lower the voltage if you simply change the engine clock to a low MHz number.

The trick is to get all the tools properly setup s.t. the voltage stays constantly low despite high clock.

Have you set up MSI Afterburner correctly? google "voltage unlock MSI Afterburner" for details. Also: did you install the drivers of your card manufacturer? That can also have an influence.

Im sending the coins to the pool wallet right now.

I think you should definitely take your time to fix the security breach.
Why should that someone (or a copycat) not just do it again?

Also going to be fun to see how your server copes with 100's of miners logging in at the same time. Wink

88  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Running MSI Radeon HD 7990's on: December 15, 2013, 04:45:05 PM
I have 17X7990 in total. The core/memory voltage and frequency vary because every GPU is different. For some GPU, I can run 0.99v, with 950/1000 MHz, temperature is 70C. For others, the temperature is 85C, with 0.95V, 870/900 MHz. It depends on the position of the cards in a PC case.

I use powered PCIE risers in open case, I put extra fans to extract heat out.

The original thermal past is extremely thick. I tried to apply thin layer of thermal paste, the improvement is minimal, just 2-5 degree, as the heat sink cannot touch the GPU evenly, even after I adjusted the force with the 4 screws. That could be the reason why manufacturer apply a thick layer of thermal paste.

Thanks for your reply, I very much appreciate it. You've got a lot of hashpower there! Probably about 20Mh/s - I'm just bumbling around at 3.5MH/s.

I might look into reapplying the thermal paste when I have time and the coin craze calms down a bit. Even 2-5 degrees are worth it, particularly if I get 5 degrees less on the hottest GPU. I've also tested the limits a bit on my cards - one card is great and seems to go up to 1000/1000 on 1.02V, but the other cannot cope as well and crashes above 960/1000. I do like to keep my cards cool <72C, so I'm sticking with lower settings. It's all great fun.

Thanks, I've been trying to under volt but --gpu-vddc doesn't seem to work on my sapphire 7990
I've read you need to use msi afterburner beta 3.0 build 17, is that what you are using.

I am now running at an average of 950Kh/s at about 79C on each core, which is progress.

Which settings did you use now? Did you use the -I 13 etc line? BTW, pushing mem clock to 1500MHz doesn't have a big advantage for me, so you might want to live with 1000MHz on both GPUs.

My experience is that cgminer cannot tweak the voltage on most cards. Get MSI afterburner and unlock it to support voltage control. There are some guides on the net that will help you with that process, e.g. http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=182403.
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PROJECT: My 12,000 KH Litecoin Mining Rig under 15.000 US$ on: December 15, 2013, 12:18:35 PM
Power would be negligible if you use it as heat

1) Open windows - no heat used.
2) No need to heat in 2-3 months time. You might actually have to pay for A/C then.
3) Gas/Oil is way cheaper than electricity for heating, so there are opportunity costs involved heating with electricity.

Of course you can lie to yourself to make the numbers match. And obviously there are tweaks to be more profitable. But it's not that simple. After all you are competing with many semi-professional miners. Where's your edge?
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PROJECT: My 12,000 KH Litecoin Mining Rig under 15.000 US$ on: December 15, 2013, 11:38:28 AM
where is the point that this hardware give you the money you invested back?
do you calculated a timeline who is give you a decent income?

The 6 card rig, that I have set-up up to now, was a total investment of around 5000 USD. That means that i have to mine 166 LTC to get a return of invest.
With a profit of around 2.5 LTC per day i would get a Return of Investment in around 66 days (2 months).

So by beginning of February all my computers are paid back. From there on I am mining into my own pocket. I am keeping the LTC because it will rise to around 1/4 of the BTC price ... I am sure.

Thanks for the pic of your setup and the temps you are getting -really interesting!

But return on investment won't be as static (and high!) as you calculated:
1) you didn't include power costs
2) difficulty is increasing very quickly and it will continue doing so http://litecoinscout.com/static/
3) price fluctuations in LTC/USD might work for/against you.
I don't like these incorrect projections that get loads of new people dragged into mining - only to discover it isn't that easy to make loads of money with it.

Maybe you can further optimize the DOA shares you are getting? 8.5% sounds high to me if you are mining LTC. I had <2% rejected shares when mining on stratum pools such as wemineltc.com or ltcmine.ru. Have you tried different pools closer to you?

Regarding temps: Do you undervolt? Do your cards ever go into throttling? What is your fan speed like? 100%?
Are the right cases in the pic closed and still running at 80C? If so, does the side fan blow air into the case or suck it out of the case? Either can be beneficial, depending on the card etc.
93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Running MSI Radeon HD 7990's on: December 15, 2013, 02:41:55 AM
I am running 4XMSI7990 without problem on Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 ATX Intel Z68 Express DDR3.

I use two OCZ 1250W Gold power supply, which is too high for 4X 7990.

If I run 3X 7990, one 1250W PSU is OK as I undervolt, the power consumption is less than 400W each card.

My setting: 1.0V VDD, core/mem 950/1000MHz. When it runs at 1.2V, the power consumption is much higher than 400W, maybe 550W each card.

The temperature varies due to the quality of thermal paste application on the GPU.

Great to hear someone successfully running these beauties in a 4x setup! Your 1V 950/1000 config sounds very similar to mine. One GPU always crashes at 1V 950MhZ for me, though, so I have to run at a lower 920MHz. I can absolutely confirm the power draw is smaller than 400W, I'm running 2x7990 on a Akasa Venom Power 1000W Gold PSU without any problems. Regarding temps, the GPUs run at roughly 57,60,63,72C, but I've got to admit my current setup is very hacky: built inside an opened case, but with 6x fans mounted around the cards.

I'm really curious how you keep your cards cool? Do you have the normal open miner approach with powered PCIe risers? Do you do anything else, e.g. remove some of the shields around the card?
What temps are you getting? If you re-applied thermal paste, how much did it improve your temps?
94  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Sapphire 7990 second gpu runs much hotter on: December 15, 2013, 02:24:37 AM

gpu-powertune=15 will allow the cards to exceed the temperature/power limits by 15%. There are cards that will throttle themselves if they get heavy workload and powertune=0. One GPU might have throttled itself before and that's why you might see lower hashrates. 79 degrees also seems pretty hot to me. Can you leave your case open? Or maybe turn around the side fan so it sucks hot air out of the case? For example, I got 2x7950 running in a closed case(!) at <65 degree with <50% fan simply by optimizing the fan layout of the case.

The card itself is easily able to get to 2x550 up to 2x730kH/s, but temperature will be a problem in that case. I've got 2x7990 doing 4x630kH/s at <=72 degree celsius, but obviously not in a closed case and undervolting is a must. The settings to max out kH for mine are: cgminer --scrypt -I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8192

Hope this helps.

Edit: I just saw that you are getting "HW" (hardware error) shares. This is not normal at all and either means that your settings are wrong or that your hardware is flaky. I believe intensity=14 might simply be too high. But maybe the high temperature causes hardware errors, I don't know. I've never had any.
95  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PROJECT: My 12,000 KH Litecoin Mining Rig under 15.000 US$ on: December 15, 2013, 02:04:02 AM
Am I reading this right??  12,000 KH/s  for $15,000 Huh

I just built a 2800 KH/s machine for £1100 BGP - or around $1,750.   5 x my setup would be 14,000 KH/s for £5500 or $8,750.

Im using MSI 7990 cards.  Managed to find a deal on these for £350 ($560).  With 2 cards this runs at 1250W.

*g* sounds strangely familiar to me. The cards were actually 357-360£ on Scan's "today only" page which is more like 580-590$ per card. And that was a one-off, probably never to return deal Sad

Somewhat off topic: how do you keep the cards cool? I can run a single card @stock voltage and speed ok, but even then it gets hot. Two cards go into meltdown, so I am currently undervolting and running them only at ~900MHz. I'm thinking about modding the cards soon (thermal paste, removing some shields to get more air to the card etc.). Oh, and total power draw for my setup is definitely <1KW at the wall - I think I measured 750-800W total.
96  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] RoyalCoin - a new scrypt based coin on: December 14, 2013, 02:26:31 AM
So I saw this on coinchoose, and started mining earlier today. None of my deposits to the exchange seem to be positing.

Same here. I mined a few blocks RYC using the addnode=5.249.152.30:9556 given above. But the coins I send to cryptsy never arrive there.

What did you do to fix your problem?

I am also getting very strange errors when starting the wallet (and mining on it): The wallet goes out of sync as it discovers more peers and then eventually hangs. Something seems very odd here (attack?) but I've got no clue how to fix it.
97  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 5* 280X or 4* 290 ? on: December 13, 2013, 11:11:16 PM
Hello,

I need some advice from you guys.

Currently I have everything that I need for my miner, except the GPU's. It is pretty much impossible to get my planned 7950's so I have to buy some other GPU.

PSU: Platimax 1500W ( http://www.enermax.com/home.php?fn=eng/product_a1_1_1&lv0=1&lv1=52&no=191 )
Mobo: MSI Z77A-GD65

I would like to get the maximum out of my specs, so I thought about getting either:

5* R9 280X
or
4* R9 290

Is it unrealistic to get 5 of the 280X in my rig? If not... which version would be the best choice? (e.g. Toxic, Dual-X OC, Gigabyte)

I hope some experienced people can help me out a bit :-)

Thank you and best regards!

Question: how much XP do you have with mining? If this is your first miner I'd advise you to start small, i.e. with 2x 280 cards at most.

There is many reasons for that: a) because mining difficulty will skyrocket and you'll make less $$$ than you thought and b) because setting up a mining rig is not simple plug and play (overheating, power, stability, etc). If you see it as a (possibly loss-making) hobby go for it! But don't count on making a lot of money.

Also remember whom you are competing with: guys ordering 50-200 cards at once (!), lots of XP with setting up miners, undervolting, flashing etc. and living in a country where electricity costs ~0.10USD/KWh. You pay 0.25-0.30USD/KWh in Germany. Pretty much only third world countries pay more - thanks to your/our solar crazy green party. For example, I believe mining wouldn't have been profitable in Germany this summer.

I'd go with the 280 for one simple reason: cooling. Unless you put your rig outside at 0-10 degrees you'll quickly run into overheating. Heck the reviews I've read mention that 290's overheat/throttle even when playing normal games!!! Only the resale value speaks for the 290.

I was lucky enough to grab 2x7990 two weeks ago for 2x600USD on offer and I'm mining the hell out of them. I'll probably recover the cost of the cards before new year, but I don't expect that to continue for much longer.
98  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1x 1250W PSU or jump 2x600w ones. Which is better solution? on: June 18, 2013, 08:34:56 AM
If you like messing around with hardware and know how to connect them or how to solder you could simply get a server power supply. You can get used 1kW - 2kW PSUs on ebay for <50$. There are Dell server PSU with a 80 Plus Titanium certification (!) running at 96% efficiency. I doubt you'd get them on ebay, though, as they are pretty new.
99  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][YAC] YACoin ongoing development on: May 26, 2013, 10:09:05 AM
Quoted for the lulz.

Merged mining draws 0 additional power so it is more money for no additional cost.

CPU mining draws a hell of a lot of power compared to CPU idling. 100W more does cost additional money.

$1 a day vs cost of powering 100W for 24 hours ( 0.24 kwh ) --- which is greater ?

Haha, allow me to quote you for the lulz as well: 100W * 24h = 0.24kWh? Where can I sign up for that electricity contract?! Wink

0.1kW * 24 hours = 2.4kWh. At 0.1-0.2$/kWh you end up paying between 0.24-0.48$/day.
IF you make 1$/day with 100W it would be profitable to mine yacoin ignoring depreciation etc.
I am paying close to 0.2$/kWh so I am only mining for fun when I do so.

from the cgminer readme

MULTIPOOL

FAILOVER STRATEGIES WITH MULTIPOOL:
A number of different strategies for dealing with multipool setups are
available. Each has their advantages and disadvantages so multiple strategies
are available by user choice, as per the following list:

FAILOVER:
The default strategy is failover. This means that if you input a number of
pools, it will try to use them as a priority list, moving away from the 1st
to the 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and so on. If any of the earlier pools recover, it will
move back to the higher priority ones.

ROUND ROBIN:
This strategy only moves from one pool to the next when the current one falls
idle and makes no attempt to move otherwise.

ROTATE:
This strategy moves at user-defined intervals from one active pool to the next,
skipping pools that are idle.

LOAD BALANCE:
This strategy sends work to all the pools to maintain optimum load. The most
efficient pools will tend to get a lot more shares. If any pool falls idle, the
rest will tend to take up the slack keeping the miner busy.

BALANCE:
This strategy monitors the amount of difficulty 1 shares solved for each pool
and uses it to try to end up doing the same amount of work for all pools.

So you can mine multiple pools.

Is it really possible to mix pools for different coins?

I know that you can e.g. solo-mine in cgminer and leech the new block info from a pool. But that would assume that the pool config in cgminer refers to a single coin! Otherwise the new block info is bogus.

Does anyone know whether this is a problem and if so how to get around it?
