81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do we bring the value of BitCoins back up? on: August 29, 2011, 01:58:24 AM
Wallet encryption is the killer app needed to allow us to convince a lot more people to get involved.

What makes things worse is that looking from an average user perspective, it seems that the development speed can only be measured in Bubnoffs. The official client looks like either some still completely unusable pre-alpha stuff, or something that has been abandoned by its developers a long time ago.

The client is full of technological complex things, yet the current developers are unable to add wallet encryption within a few month. For the end users that is - I don't care if someone has this in his private repository.

And think about this: adding wallet encryption is an easy task - if there would be an urgent need to add something more complex, it will probably take years. Maybe we need to search and reactivate Satoshi himself, because if the development process would have been so slow from the start, the first bitcoin software version would not have seen the light before maybe 2040.

Someone needs to convince Gavin that "the user experience is my lowest priority" is probably not the best approach.

Perhaps you might want to contribute to this project: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=29109.0
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 29, 2011, 12:48:59 AM
For a start many of those things if you look in the code aren't a "constant". I can tell you haven't looked at the code because you would see there is 3 bands of increase, 2%, 6% and 10%. So already you're coming from a ridiculously ignorant position.

Alright, you got me.  I assumed that since changing the difficulty increase cap doesn't require anything more than changing a single constant, you would have been smart enough to do it that way.  Instead, you decided to add pointless complexity.  Good job?

Quote
Secondly the majority of the Bitcoin procotol works well, so the majority of the the protocol needs little changing in my mind, but when it comes to the important things I did change them, as small as they may be. They make SolidCoin a resilient network, BETTER than Bitcoin. This isn't subjective.

Are you really making your stand on 3 minute blocks vs. 10 minute blocks?  That's the reason we're all supposed to switch blockchains, because you think 10 minutes is too long and 3 minutes won't cause scalability problems?

Quote
Thirdly if you think all that Bitcoin is about is the protocol you probably share the same characteristics as many of the developers, most with their heads in the sand. Where is the ease of use to get grandma using it? Where are the tools to help developers make secure sites so that MyBitcoin.com's aren't happening every second week. Where is the education of the people who are now losing money for others through careless mistakes? Where are the optimizations to the most commonly called APIs? We have sites going up and down like a yoyo as they try to balance a broken program.

The reason I stress the protocol is that everything else can be fixed without switching blockchains.  Hell, even if there's a problem with the protocol, it can still be fixed if you achieve consensus on the change.  So why start over?  If you absolutely can't work with the mainline client devs, you can always fork the client and stay on the same blockchain.  Your ego trip would last longer too.
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 28, 2011, 11:21:37 PM
I'm talking about the protocol.  You know, that thing that's actually kind of difficult to change once a blockchain gets established?  What have you done that can't just be released as a modified client for the Bitcoin blockchain?
All of the changes can't be released as a modified client for the Bitcoin blockchain; doing so would cause a fork in the blockchain which would be a lot more disruptive than simply starting a new one. In particular, the problem with forking the blockchain is that transactions can be carried from one side to the other and this can be used to double-spend bitcoins - once on each side of the fork - and obtain bitcoins that are valid on both sides, guaranteeing that exchanges and e-wallets will be screwed over.

I didn't say that all of the changes could be merged into Bitcoin.  However, CoinHunter is crowing about supposed UI and API improvements in the SolidCoin client.  These aren't protocol level changes, so presumably if any of them have merit they can just be copied, and aren't a good reason to switch to the SolidCoin blockchain.

The reason I'm asking about protocol changes is that those can't just be copied easily.  If there were significant protocol improvements, it might make for a compelling reason to switch.  As it stands, SolidCoin's protocol changes are unimpressive

Quote
  • Difficulty algorithm aims for 3 minute blocks instead of 10 minute blocks.  Achieved by changing one constant.  Of questionable merit, due to scalability concerns.
Sounds like a good reason to implement it on a new, smaller network rather than Bitcoin then.

If an alternate blockchain currency is going to survive, it can't aim for being smaller than Bitcoin.  As I said before, we're dealing with a natural monopoly.  Some have stated that "Ix/I0/SolidCoin can be the silver to Bitcoin's gold".  This is a poor analogy, as BTC is divisible enough that there's no need for a lower-value cryptocurrency to "make change" with.  So really, mBTC are the silver to BTC's gold.

Quote
  • Difficulty retargets more often.  Achieved by changing one constant.  Essential for an underdog blockchain to survive, but not really relevant for Bitcoin.
  • Difficulty increases limited to +10% per retarget.  Achieved by changing one constant.  Essentially an extra subsidy to miners, not relevant for Bitcoin.
Not relevant to Bitcoin now; it's an open question as to whether it will be in the future. Also, the limited difficulty increases aren't just a subsidy to miners, they're also necessary to stop the difficulty from overshooting wildly. (For some reason they're not just implemented as a simple change to one constant either; the way difficulty increases are calculated is substantially modified.)

If it becomes relevant to Bitcoin, then Bitcoin will be pretty much doomed anyway.

The difficulty retargeting algorithm doesn't really overshoot.  You're not going to get a 400% difficulty increase just because blocks are being solved every 9 minutes instead of every 10 minutes.  The problem occurs when the majority of your mining power leaves, not when the difficulty changes.

The limited difficulty increases aren't bad per se, it's just that in combination with the fast difficulty decrease, the average number of blocks produced ends up being far higher than the target rate, hence my subsidy comment.

Quote
(Also, am I the only person that's more worried about the security implications of their changes to difficulty targetting than anything else?)

I'm not familiar with how the network enforces time synchronization.  Maybe if you find the last block in a difficulty retargeting period, you could give it a fake timestamp to mess around with the difficulty calculation.  It seems like if this would be a problem for SolidCoin, it would be a problem for Bitcoin too, but with fewer opportunities to exploit it.
84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Experimental alt-currency needs pools from start. Would you run one ? on: August 28, 2011, 07:41:46 AM
Why do you need pools?  Why not just solo mine it?
85  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 28, 2011, 07:39:26 AM
Even if another blockchain does overtake Bitcoin, SolidCoin won't be the one to do it.  To be successful, the challenger would need to make significant protocol-level improvements, and even that might not be enough.  CoinHunter hasn't done this.  Protocol-wise, all he's done is changed a few constants; nothing more complex than what the creator of Ixcoin did.

Haha, could you post some more FUD? SolidCoin is nothing like Ixcoin, which changed (besides name changes) maybe ~50 lines of code. Ixcoin has now copied some aspects of SolidCoin's changes.

SolidCoin on the other hand has added code to the base to extend the API, fixed about 40-50 bugs, streamlined areas of the UI, implemented a much smarter network algorithm and processes blocks much faster. All within a week. If you're going to try to troll something at least get your information right and attack it justly.

I'm talking about the protocol.  You know, that thing that's actually kind of difficult to change once a blockchain gets established?  What have you done that can't just be released as a modified client for the Bitcoin blockchain?  By my count:

  • Difficulty algorithm aims for 3 minute blocks instead of 10 minute blocks.  Achieved by changing one constant.  Of questionable merit, due to scalability concerns.
  • Block reward changed from 50 to 32.  Achieved by changing one constant.  Irrelevant except for the psychological factor, see also: Ixcoin.

Any other PROTOCOL changes that I missed?  If not, then are these really supposed to be your grand innovations that we're all expected to switch blockchains for?
86  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 27, 2011, 10:25:06 PM
That's right, it's really important that both currencies thrive side by side. We need a good exchange medium outside of $ / £ / €

Why do you think it's important to have both?  I'm pretty sure we're dealing with a natural monopoly here.  There don't seem to be any significant benefits to having two viable blockchain-based currencies, while there a several disadvantages.

I should say "don't ask me".

Why not?  I'm asking for your reasoning behind the claim that you made.  Who else would I ask?

Quote
Maybe there is a natural monopoly for one currency, that may not be Solidcoin, but it's just as likely not Bitcoin either.

By all accounts the "First to market" isn't always, or even usually, the final "winner". Look at Altavista V Google, Friendster V Facebook, the list goes on ....

I acknowledged that Bitcoin may not win out.  However, it is currently the only viable contender.  Trivially-different "me too" clones don't stand a chance.  The comparison to social networks is rather apt here; network effects are key.  There's no benefit for current Bitcoin users to switch to SolidCoin, and newcomers to the cryptocurrency world are going to be heavily inclined to pick the more popular one.

I've been skeptical of these blockchain forks since Ixcoin started, and events have played out pretty much as I expected with both Ixcoin and I0coin.  I've been a lot quieter about SolidCoin, because I figure that everyone getting into it has already had more than ample warning about what's to come.

However, I didn't see you involved in any of the previous Ixcoin/I0coin threads.  You lack the "fuck you got mine" attitude typical of alternative blockchain speculators.  You seem to actually care about promoting cryptocurrency for its own sake, and are trying to offer something of value.  Hell, you even donated your merchant bounty back.  I'd hate to see you get burned on this thing without warning, so consider this your warning and do with it what you will.  Smiley

In all the threads on this topic I haven't been able to find a quote of what exactly is in these block headers that is supposed to be so controversial, just a bunch of chat logs where this is alluded to.

Here:

Can we have links to a few blocks of Eligius to see this ourselves?

I just had a contraversial prediction: parity accross the board

Sounds about right.  Wait a week or so for a new, trivially-"improved" fork to be released, or for the speculators to just lose interest outright; SolidCoin will be back down to Ixcoin levels.  Namecoin will probably stay up for a while longer, until merged mining is implemented, at which point the surge in supply will crash the price.

That's actually what I meant, my language could've been more clear, sorry.

I can't speak for Luke's other critics, but I personally have no tolerance for fascists.  I'd like to see the guy shunned out of the Bitcoin community.  In what way should I be tactful about that?

Just in case anyone isn't aware, once we do hit 100% there will be a bit more waiting for the Stack Exchange staff to actually set up the site, according to what I've read.  Might be a few days?  After that the site will be in private beta for a week with just those that are currently signed up, and then will be opened to the public.

Len was our friend.
A brilliant mind,
a kind soul, and
a devious schemer;
husband to Meredith
brother to Calvin,
son to Jim and
Dana Hartshorn,
coauthor and
cofounder and
Shmoo and so much
more.  We dedicate
this silly hack to
Len, who would have
found it absolutely
hilarious.

I don't like generalisations in general (Wink) but some posts here are really nothing better than some (out of context) statements of Luke-Jr.

I provided context for what I quoted.  What's being attributed to Luke here isn't anything that he would disagree with.  Go ahead and talk to him on IRC, you'll find out soon enough.

what was the problem with shapado again? http://bitcoin.shapado.com/

of course this has to run non-commercial and with a couple of well trusted moderators.

This was discussed in one of the original Stack Exchange threads.  Some folks are of the opinion that SE has better features than the alternatives, though I can't comment on that myself.  One big advantage is that the Bitcoin SE will get traffic from the rest of the SE network, which will allow it to grow faster than an alternative Q&A site would.  Bitcoin itself will also gain more attention as a nice side effect.

At this point there wouldn't be any value in switching, as the site will launch in the next few days and will have a pre-existing userbase.  The Bitcoin Shapado site doesn't appear to have any users at all.
