81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We need a 1-syllable word on: November 28, 2013, 01:21:02 AM
Agreed we need a good nickname as I plan on giving away a lot of "bits" to friends and family this year.

How are you going to do that? I was planning to do the same, but wasn't sure of the best way. I'd like to give them a QR code or something?
82  Economy / Speculation / Re: When to think about selling? on: November 28, 2013, 12:40:54 AM
I've read some talk about $2K-$3K.  And what about LTC?

I wouldn't look at a price so much as an event: i.e. when an ETF launches and the public can more easily get into bitcoin... That's when things will really take off.

Girl Scout Cookies

Haha. Nice!
84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin volume will soon surpass Bitcoin beacuse people think its 'cheaper' on: November 28, 2013, 12:36:52 AM
Litecoin traded $70 million in volume on BTC-e in the past day or so.  Soon it will be 1/2 Bitcoin volume, or even match it.

Since october bitcoin went from $100 to $1000, litecoin went from $1 to $35 (and climbing).  Litecoin has been a 350% better investment.

I have friends who just told me that they were thinking about buying Bitcoin, but they're going to give Litecoin a try because its 'cheaper' and might to go to $1000 like bitcoin. This is the problem that I said would happen many posts ago.  The psychology aspect is now playing a roll because we haven't switched to 'bits' aka 100 satoshi as the base unit.

I'm going to convert 1/4 of my BTC as a hedge incase money starts flowing out of Bitcoin and into Litecoin.  I suggest everyone else do the same as well.  I also think the fact that it is GPU based is also a big driver for usage. This is not the case with Bitcoin where specialized ASIC hardware is required, and the only way to get it is by taking a financial loss as the ASIC companies sell it for more then its worth.

Agreed. I've converted over 75% of my BTC at the moment to other currencies. It's like a leveraged bet on bitcoin.

for a mBTC.

Like, quid/buck/etc...

A pill... Rhymes with mill at least and sounds cool.
86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Name something you've actually BOUGHT with bitcoin on: November 28, 2013, 12:30:21 AM
I feel like the vast majority of people are investors right now. Is anyone actually using bitcoin to buy things? If so, what? I've purchased other cryptocurrencies with it, but that's it so far...
87  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 28, 2013, 12:28:07 AM
I know a couple, all in it for investment opportunity. Really wondering when they will cash out, never really discussed this. Have to try to convince them that using it as a currency might preoduce more long term returns than sitting on it...

Convince me of that.  Sure, people in general need to spend it more to make it go up in value.  But the selfish ones that hold on will make more than the ones who spend.  So in reality, this is a hard thing to convince.  The "Hey... if everyone had that attitude, bitcoin would be worth nothing" is not good enough of an argument to get me to spend.

You're absolutely right mate. You're putting your finger on the sore spot, and the flaw of bitcoin at this moment, as long as it is a purely speculative currency its real value is zero, and the bubble has to burst. Maybe we need a scenario like this, where after the crash the value is so low that it is not worth it cashing out, but people will start buying pizza with it.

Very good point... I think I'll start a thread to see if people are actually buying anything with their bitcoin or if they're just holding it as an investment. I've been buying alternative currencies with mine...
88  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 28, 2013, 12:26:07 AM
Hey ohiofarmer,

I'm right next door in the fine city of Indianapolis.  Not only to I mine bitcoins but accept bitcoins and litecoins as full payment for any service I conduct. Nearly all my comrades are familiar with bitcoins and I know a few dozen people actively involved with them.

Come over for coffee sometime Smiley you are right next door. Smiley

~ Leneous

Awesome. I'll let you know if I'm ever headed that way. I'm impressed so many people are involved with it there... I think there's a Cincy bitcoin meetup, but nothing in Dayton yet. Maybe I should start one!  Smiley I'm too busy having fun learning about this stuff, though.
89  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 27, 2013, 03:36:26 AM
It is incredibly risky. The price of Bitcoin could crash to near zero at any moment and it's far from certain that it would necessarily recover. I think Bitcoins are a pretty good investment (though now is a particularly dangerous time to buy) but to deny that it's very, very risky is madness.

Agreed. I guess I meant that they think it's too risky to even dream about getting involved with... like it's snake oil or something.
90  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 27, 2013, 03:29:53 AM
I'm from a small city in Manitoba, Canada.

Never sold any BTC here in town or met another user here.
I have however met a person through friends that lives in a town 3 hours away that buys BTC off me from time to time.

Cheers,

KLYE

Three hours away. That's dedication!  Smiley

Hello Ohiofarmer,
I am an OhioSmallBusinessman.
Being in the backwaters of the state (Toledo) I hadn't run into anyone who had bought bitcoin (although I am pretty much at work or home almost all of my waking hours).
At any rate, I wanted to see if there was any local interest so I placed an ad on localbitcoins a week or so ago (the closest listing on localbitcoin was 45 minutes away) I got my first response and met at a Tim Horton's a mile from my home. Turns out the 2 gents who showed up owned a local retail outlet and were there to buy their first coin. We ended up talking for several hours. Had a fun time. I am looking forward to meeting others. I don't really want to sell the coin I have but I figure that it is easy enough to buy more on an exchange. You might try doing the same. Help expand the universe of bitcoin.

Great idea. Good to hear from someone who lives in the same state and has some bitcoin! I'm in the Dayton area. Maybe I'll do that. I have seen some posts from a guy who lives about 30 minutes away who sells coins through Localbitcoins...
92  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 27, 2013, 02:10:30 AM

One thing about being old is I have seen things like this before. Not exactly like this, but at some point when the value is too high and the price falls backwards for a continuos 2 weeks to 40% down. No one will sell you one, because they wont be able to buy one to sell you. Up n up... then its over.

I'm in my early 30s, and this all reminds me of when the internet started catching on. If I were older back then, I hope I would have had the foresight to buy a bunch of domain names. I met a lot of people in Florida who are essentially living off the sale of domain names they gobbled up during the mid- to late 90s... I think bitcoin could present the same sort of opportunity. If it catches on and serious investors (outside of the Winklevoss's) start using it as an inflation hedge, I think it'll really grow fast -- especially if the Winklevoss's get their bitcoin ETF approved.
93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Total alternative currency inflows/market cap on: November 27, 2013, 02:03:56 AM
awesome informative site you have, btw.  i refer to it regularly, and im sure others do as well.  you need to start capitalizing on ad revenue or something!

It's not actually my site! But it is awesome. I just wanted to create this thread so we can have a place to show overall market growth over time...
94  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Total alternative currency inflows/market cap on: November 27, 2013, 01:59:11 AM
are you the site owner?  can you add Ripple?  It got an extremely high market cap, top 5 I believe

It's No. 2 behind bitcoin. I'll post Ripple separately:

96  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the fastest way to deposit money to buy bitcoins? on: November 27, 2013, 12:29:11 AM
Dear gentlemen,
I am currently unable to deposit any kind of money (euros actually) on various exchanges. They all ask for confirmations to "verify my account" that will last several days, and the deposit itself will also take days and days...
Examples? On bitcoin.de, I can't tell, because the verification process with Sofort simply doesn't work. On BTC-E, I am redirected to Okpay, that redirects me to other sites who promise nothing but high fees and long delays. Mtgox wants a verification + asks a delay of 7-10 days for a deposit. And so on.
This is much too long. This is dysfunctional and shady looking. This is infuriating. I just want to deposit my money quickly and trade... Any solution, any site to do this faster than a week or more?

Try to find a local seller... That would be the easiest way. I use Coinbase here in the U.S. (not sure if they take Euros). You can verify your account the same day you set it up by linking it with your bank account, but it does take a couple days for your buy order to go through.

Probably somewhere between 200-300 people...

Wow, Austin sounds like the place to be!
98  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Do you know anyone in the REAL WORLD who has bought bitcoin? on: November 26, 2013, 11:34:24 PM
Granted I live in Ohio, but I've never met a single person who has bought bitcoin. I haven't seen a store that takes it, and everyone I talk to thinks it's "risky" (which I don't agree with). Anyway, I'd love to hear if other people have met anyone in the real world who owns bitcoin (or any alternative currency) and if so, where do you live?
99  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The first alternative currency to hit $1 million? Bitbars on: November 26, 2013, 11:19:56 PM
Bitbar had it's chance - and failed.

Scarcity is a bad argument. I can release ScamCoin and limit it 100 coins, it will not make it valuable.

It's seen a bump recently, so I wouldn't write it off yet. As others have noted, it's almost impossible to kill off any alternative currency unless all records of the blockchain are destroyed.

I will definitely do some more research on the origins of the coin, though. I'm thinking of doing a series of blog posts that researches all of the coins in-depth one at a time. There are getting to be so many it's hard to tell why one's different from another.
100  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many coins do you have? on: November 26, 2013, 11:09:30 PM
I'm mining litecoin, and I've purchased some anoncoin, bitbars and cryptogenic bullion in addition to bitcoin. Excited to see which ones gain in popularity...
