Can anyone PLEASE help a newbie completely doumbfounded by all of this!!
I downloaded and installed the windows client. Launched earthcoin-qt.exe.
Everything is synched.
Encrypted my password to a long, secure one.
Ok. Now for solo mining or group mining, what are the 'username' and password?
Is my username simply my assigned earthcoin address?
And my password is the same encrypted password I just created? Please let me know, want to get started, but don't want to input my encrypted password if it's not the one I should be using! :O

username and pass only needed for pool mining or using a miner other than the wallet.
to be honest you are better going with a pool, personally I have used
http://adtpool.co.uk since it opened and had no problems and get regular payouts even with a crappy hash rate.
Basically register with your pool, set up a worker name and password - that will be the user name and pass your miner uses. In account settings set up your eac address to get paid to and auto payment level - ie how often you get paid. Next grab a copy of cgminer (I personally use version 3.5, you do need a version 3.7 or earlier to support scrypt mining, then launch your cgminer at the pool and watch the money roll in
