Which specific model of 6950 are we talking about here. I've had no problems with my 6950's so I'm interested.
84  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone have any luck under clocking memory on 6990's ? on: March 09, 2012, 12:33:07 AM
Just flash the bios and be done with it ...

The primary bios on a 6990 is typically write protected, but you can flash the "overvolt" bios in position #2. Don't mess with the other profiles only change the main profile with the 830 mhz and 1250 mhz mem speed. Leave the rest alone, and boom ... your set.

BTW: Dropping mem from core clock - 125 to 150 mhz will save you nearly 25 watts per gpu .. or a total of 50 watts per 6990 card.

85  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What was your cheapest miner to build? on: March 09, 2012, 12:30:23 AM
Not one of my systems, but a system that I helped build for a friend. Even I was amazed how cheap it worked out;

1x ASUS M5A78L-M LX $50
1x Sempron 145 $35
1x 2gb stick DDR3 $10
1x Corsair CX600 600 watt PSU $50
2x 1x-16x risers $9
1x 16x-16x riser $4.50
-----------------------------------------
$158.50

3x Saphire 5830's $330
===================

Total cost $488 ... does 855 mhash/sec @ 560 watts stock voltage and 875 mhz ...

Only downside is it is a bit greedy on power, nearly 2x my systems ... He told me he got it to do 450 watts recently by reducing the voltage a tad but not clock decrease.

Still ... 450 watts for 855 mhash/sec is high... I'm not sure the 5830 is the best for power.

86  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6990's and risers - actual experiences? on: March 08, 2012, 09:43:56 PM
I have 3x6990's on an MSI 890FXA-FD70 ... no risers, no power bypass.

System did 2630 mhash/sec in the 1.175 volt setting and pulled 1460 watts at the wall ... actually had to step it back because I kept hitting 1500 watts. Plus this was a 1200 watt PSU and although it performed this way for a month I've since decided the extra power wasn't worth it.

So at 1.12 volts and -125 memdiff the system ran 2520 mhash/sec @ 1170 watts (95 watts system) for 356 watts per card.

Flashing the 1.175 volt bios with 1.12 volt a 150 mhz memclock reduced the power by 150 watts for 1020 watts or 306 watts per card.

88  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 7990? Guess on cost, power usage, output? on: February 11, 2012, 07:09:04 PM
Hi All,

From what I have been able to find and using other related info I have come up with this guess on the 7990's. Please tell me how and why you think these numbers could be improved.

Will be released in March.
Will cost $800.
Will hash at 1.2G.
Will use 300 watts.
(slight undervolt, mem down clock to 300 and the core at 1100)

Thanks.

Umm .. no ... not quite.

Will be released between March and April, but only after all other offerings, i.e. 7770, etc.
Will cost $849, list ... there will be an immediate shortage and you will see street prices for $999 ... eBay listings will have them for $1100-$1200.
Will hash at 975 mhash/sec @ 820 mhz, if overclocked we will be lucky to see 1100 mhash/sec @ 925 mhz.
Will use 375 watts.

Here is the reason ... currently the 7990 has a power problem. The power demands of the 7970 are greater than a 6970, but a 6990 was basically a underclocked dual 6970 and was maxed out on power. Very little overclocking room before saturating the available 375 watts. The 6990 allowed raising the voltage and bumping power up to 420 watts but this was beyond spec and some poorer quality molex connectors didn't survive.

Remember they don't tune these things for miners with low mem speeds and all.

So ... what we are looking at is is a power consumption of 232 watts at stock clocks/mem/voltage. So two of them would be around 464 watts. Now moving to a single fan might shave off 20 watts (30 watts tops) ... so 430 watts at stock voltage/mem/clocks... this is a problem .. that is where they want to be after overclocking.

So they will have to introduce them at a lower clock rate, perhaps 820 mhz instead of 925 mhz ... which would shave it to roughly 200 watts per gpu. Again a little fan savings... and bam ... we are at 385 watts ... damn ... still too much ... especially since the added PCI-e bridge on board uses 5-7 watts. So we are actually at close to 392 watts again ... not a lot of margin.

Plus they don't typically ship with settings that run absolutely to the bleeding edge of the spec ... they want you to be able to overclock some..

So ... what can they possibly do ... they will undervolt them stock, which will limit the ability to overclock like a 7970 to 1100-1200 mhz.

I expect them to intro closer to the 1.00-1.05 volt mark ... this would put the power about 25-50 watts less per gpu.

So .. then you are looking at;

820 mhz clock @ 1.05 volts using about 335 watts doing 975 mhash/sec

or

820 mhz clock @ 1.00 volts using about 300 watts doing the same hash rate.

Remember they want you to have plenty of room to overclock and buy ridiculous cooling hardware and publish tons of reviews, etc, etc... this is all good media for them...

That is, in a word, awesome!

My offer or my cluster?

How much gh/sec are you getting?

From 80 gpu's 30.68 ghash/sec @ 13,548 watts ....

How much for 4?  Shipped to Canada?

Send me a private message with your general location in Canada and I can get a quote .. I'll do $210 each for 4 cards ... the savings should basically cover shipping costs.
91  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Advice for a start for a Mining Farm on: February 10, 2012, 06:16:15 PM
If you don't pay for power than you just have to recoup HW costs. So might as well buy a bunch of cheap HW.

Well then the problem with that is I don't have enough circuit breakers to have all these systems.

Each circuit can only support like 1450 watts before the breaker trips.  My house is set up to have one breaker per room.  So with my above set up, I would be pulling "roughly" 800-1000 watts on each circuit (not including anything else in the room).

So unless I either:

  • Put a computer in each room with wireless adapters.
or
  • Have a bunch of extension cables and cat5 cables running through the house.
or
  • Drop $$$ to have my breaker box upgraded and have several breakers installed and wired to an adjoining room as a "rig room".

While the first option is easy, it would be weird to have a stand along rig just sitting in the corner with a box fan on it running (living room, family room, laundry room)  Of course not an option in the kitchen due to the oven and microwave.  Turn them on and pop a breaker.

In the end the final option will need to be done, but I also plan on moving to FPGAs in the future (1-2 years) as well.

I vote for the rig room and running a subpanel from your main box, connecting all your miners at 240 volts and having a cold air intake and a hot air exhaust from the room.

For example; My rig room is in the pic in this forum posting

92  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: limitations on gpu's per motherboard on: February 10, 2012, 06:13:32 PM
This biggest limitations that I have come across (other then slots)are:

  • Available power per circuit breaker
  • Generated Heat
  • Air Flow

You can get into FPGAs, but then cost rises alot.

Don't forget the ATI driver limit of 8 gpu's... that is a show stopper.

So currently max 8 gpu's ... so a max of 4 dual gpu cards or 8 single gpu cards.

Most people who have pushed this can get 6 single cards in a 890FXA-GD70 using 5 16x->16x extenders and a single 1x->16x extender. The power supply requirement would be huge ... depending on the card ...

But for example 6 gpu's needs at minimum a very good quality 1200 watt PSU. Like a Seasonic 1250 or an Antec TPQ-1200 ...

Not quite the right price point for mining (I sold off some 330Mhash 5830's for $120 while they were still hot), but a good deal for the gamer.

I did say I would entertain offers Wink

I figure that if I sell my used cards they will be cheaper than these which are unopened and new in the box.

I would save some money on the psu and get an Antec TPQ-1200 ... the OC edition has even more power connectors for video cards ...

Either way ... the TPQ-1200 has served me well and they run about $220 ... sometimes you can get them for $150-$180 used.

You can also save yourself some money getting 16x->16x extenders from 9mart.com. You will need 16x->16x unless you want to diddle with the pci-e lane detect pins. The 16x->16x just works, of course if you want to use the 1x slot, then you need a 1x->16x as well.

No need for powered extenders a the GD70 has successfully run 3 6990's without them, stable for almost a year now. The machine uses 1170 watts at the wall to do 2520 mhash/sec. Remember the 1200 watt rating is on the DC side, not the AC side at the wall. So my PSU is actually at about 1000-1050 watts load.

Also on the memory, on my machines with 4 video cards the resident running memory requirement is just over 1 gb ... so .. 2 gb would be fine. I actually have 4 gb in each machine which is handy if you want to netboot as 1 gb will get eaten up holding the iso image. Netboot is highly recommended because the USB is so slow and also ... extra cost you don't need to spend.

I built a big cluster with the idea of putting 6 gpu's per machine. That didn't work out ... I ordered over 100 cards and have these remaining, still unopened in the box. These cards are the latest revision of the PCB which runs cooler than my previous rev cards.

The card features a dual bios which flashes easily and screw ups are easily remedied by flicking to the alternate bios. Unlocking these cards has worked about 60% of the time for me and I can provide a proper bios with the unlock, but I will not unlock the card before shipping. Flashing the bios is your own deal, your own risk.

Stock clocks of these cards is 800 mhz, I've bumped them up to typically 900 mhz and some even higher. I typically can get about 360+ mhash/sec from a shader locked card and just under 400 mhash/sec from an unlocked card.

The card features a large heatsink and dual fans. In my setup I'm running 20 machines each with 4 cards with no risers. Cards are very close together only using a plastic DVI dust cap to space the cards from each other. I've ran this setup for 9 months with no fan failures. I've now survived an entire summer (up to 95F ambient) and a winter running outdoors (down to 25F ambient).

I'll accept 40 btc (exchange rate dependent) or $220 MTGOX USD cash redeem code per card. I'll do PayPal also, but you pay the fees. Shipping costs depend on where the card is going. I will of course combine shipping for purchase of multiple cards. I will also entertain discounted offers for multiple cards.

I will provide a receipt that should provide full warranty (unopened, new in box, etc) of 2 years. I can only assure warranty from the data of my purchase in August. But in short you can rest assured as even in a pinch I would be willing to file RMA via proxy if it was needed.

Here is the output for cgminer running on a system with 4 of these current revision cards; The second card is shader locked. The other 3 are unlocked. Mind you the temperatures and fan load are at 55F ambient.

I will perhaps be selling my used cards as well. But for now I'm only interested in selling the new unused cards.

If I do sell my used cards, there will be plenty for sale. I currently have 89 in service.

Photo + where do you ship from? Escrow? Might be interested as I need to add on to my rigs too.

Present your idea of an escrow service. I'm not totally comfortable with escrow, but I can be persuaded.

BTW: I posted a pic in the original post.
