81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: PhoenixMiner 5.5c: fastest Ethereum/Ethash miner with lowest devfee (Win/Linux) on: May 04, 2021, 12:16:15 PM
Is it ok for a GPU to run +1000 mem clock for long perioids of time? My MSI gaming X 1060 6gb can run +1000 mem clock without errors but i'm thinking perhaps it's not good to run such high speeds for a long time... My rig is 2x msi gaming x 1060 6gb, asus 1060 6gb dual fan and evga 1060 6gb.

As long as the rig is running stable and not over temperature, it's perfectly fine. However in terms of overclocking, more is not always better and you might be using less than optimal settings with such a high overclock. If you're on Windows, a good way to find the most efficient settings is with the GPU utilization sensor in GPU-Z. Ideally you want to slowly increase your overclock settings  until you reach 100% utilization. That should be the optimal setting for your card.

add:
-hstats 2

Thanks for the suggestion, but with -hstats 2 on the latest v5.6b beta it still does not report the temperature. Just the fan speed, power and clocks. I'm concerned it wont shut down the GPU's if the tstop limit is reached.
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: MacOS recommendations? on: May 02, 2021, 06:30:54 PM
GPU mining on a mac is not recommended. Because of how Apple locks down macOS it doesn't have the drivers or miners support of Windows or Linux and even if you get it to run, you're hashrate won't be the same as in other OS. You're best bet for GPU mining is to run smOS or HiveOS, which runs off a USB stick.

You can also farm Chia on a mac and in fact, plotting is 5-10% faster than on Windows.

Is it the right place to report a bug?

I have a mixed rig with RX570 + 1070 + 1060 and I was running T-rex + Teamredminer. The combined dashboard hash rate was pretty good (83.5MH/s) but the effective hash rate was a bit disappointed (around 80.5MH/s). So I decided to give PhoenixMiner a try, I am using the latest version 5.6b but I noticed that I can only see the GPU temperature on the RX570 while it is missing on the 1060+1070.

Nvidia driver is 466.11 / AMD driver is 21.4.1. I keep all the parameters default except "-cmdport", "-rxboost 20" for the AMD card, and "-straps 4" for Nvidia cards.

I posted it on Reddit and it seems someone running a mixed rig also notice the same issue.
https://www.reddit.com/r/EtherMining/comments/n357te/phoenixminer_missing_temperature_on_nvidia_cards/

I also have the same problem of the temperature not being reported with Nvidia Pascal GPU's in Linux when I try the latest Phoenix miner 5.6 betas. v5.5c works fine.

Seems like your overclocks are the problem causing your rig to crash. Follow this guide and it will help you set them correctly.

anyone knows if core + mem clock and voltages can be set in ubuntu these days? i tried it some years ago and it was not working thats why i used windows... would like to try ubuntu again if someone knows if it work

Yes. I have Polaris GPU's mining in Arch Linux and set the core/mem overclocks, voltages, power limit and fan speed with the latest Phoenix miner config file. You can also set them through the terminal using rocm-smi.

87  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: new asic ETH miners is coming. and Trent.eth just twittered! on: May 01, 2021, 03:56:04 AM
One bit of encouragement, at least in how it relates to the chips needed to produce ASICs at scale is the global chip shortage, which is very much real. You have Telsa, GPU and Cellphone manufacturers all scrambling to source raw materials to continue production, so I very much doubt Bitmain and the other ASIC manufacturer's are in any better position. The few units initially available will most likely be very overpriced for those willing to pay to play. That also gives the ETH developers enough time to address the issue if they choose to. When you have entire market segments riding on your back, the last thing you want to do is rush things out.

88  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: new asic ETH miners is coming. and Trent.eth just twittered! on: April 30, 2021, 10:37:39 PM
If all these new ETH ASIC reported hash rates are true, they are a great improvement over the 1st generation ETH ASICS, which amounted to nothing more than a regular RX 570/580 rig at the time at maybe a tiny power savings. If the stated rates are true, current yields are going to seem like the good old days once more and more ASICS come online. GPU miners will be left to fighting over smaller and smaller scraps to the point where it becomes irrelevant. The same thing happened with LTC and DASH back in 2014. The one standout from back then was VTC which quickly moved from nScrypt once an ASIC was developed. Unfortunately for GPU miners it's never managed to gain traction.
89  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Things are quit different now it seems on: April 30, 2021, 12:18:21 AM
I think this latest Crypto bull run has shown the alt markets no longer moves in correlation with the BTC market as it has in the past. During this latest bull run, the gains in the alt markets have far out paced the gains in the BTC market. Meanwhile you have entire market segments built upon ETH, which is having trouble keeping pace due to scalability and transaction costs limiting that growth. IMO, EIP 1559 drastically reducing the rewards miners receive by a 1/3 or more combined with release of Bitmain's new ETH ASIC is going to be a tuff hurdle for GPU miners to overcome in the short term. While I'm bullish on ETH long term, I would not expect the ETH price to keep pace in the short term due to the scalability issues and to many projects looking to implement their own Layer 2 solutions, or their own chains entirely, reducing their dependence on ETH. Due to all of this, If I were building rigs today, I would not count on the current profitability to remain short term and it would probably be better to mine with a longer term perspective.
90  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can't resolve host ... Host not found on: April 29, 2021, 07:28:10 PM
It could also be DHCP  is not enabled for your network interface. I don't use HiveOS, but if you can access a terminal window, see if you can ping www.google.com

ping -c 3 www.google.com

If you get a response, that shows DNS lookup, is working and you have an internet connection. If you don't get a response, try seeing if you can ping an, external IP address directly like.

ping -c 3 8.8.8.8

If you get a response then it shows you have an internet connection but DNS name resolution is not working.

If you don't get a response from either one, try seeing if the network interface for your internet connection is enabled and running. To do that it depends on what the system uses to manage network connections. Some systems use NetworkManager. If it uses DHCPCD.Type ipconfig in a terminal window and that will give you a list of network interfaces on the system. Select the network interface that the system uses connect to the internet and type (replace enp5s0 with the name of your network controller).

sudo systemctl status dhcpcd@enp5s0.service

The output will tell you if the controller is enabled and active. If it says disabled, you enable it with

sudo systemctl enable dhcpcd@enp5s0.service

and to start the interface use

sudo systemctl start dhcpcd@enp5s0.service

If the system uses Network Manager check the status with

sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service

and you can enable and start the service the same way with

sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager.service
sudo systemctl start NetworkManager.service
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Need help with heat issues on: April 29, 2021, 06:27:50 PM
Adding fans without removing the heated air from the GPU's is not going to lower the room temperature. It's just going to circulate the hot air around the room which then continues to get heated by the GPU's. Short of using A/C, in order to lower the room temperature you have to physically vent the hot air out so that it's replaced with fresh air from the outside. Ideally you want a 'Push & Pull' configuration where you are pushing in fresh air from the outside and pulling out the heated air in the room at the other end. Another option is to create a mining enclosure which pushes in fresh air over the GPU's and then the air gets vented directly outside so that it doesn't heat up the room. Here is a video of this concept. Some people have also successfully used grow tents.

92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Need help with heat issues on: April 29, 2021, 07:47:59 AM
Probably the window fan is not very efficient at removing the hot air out of the room. Basically you want a constant flow of fresh air coming in to replace the hot air in the room, so that it doesn't heat up. An inline fan is a good option, but to do it efficiently you need a fan capable of removing at least the same CFM of air from the room as the size of the room and preferably more. Measure the CF of the room and look at the CFM rating of the fan. Another option is to use a squirrel cage fan but they are pretty loud.

93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Chia generating K32 plot file on 230-240GB SSD on: April 27, 2021, 03:57:14 PM
This means that server is better for plotting, I'm still planning to build one with some money that I can risk because anything can happen this coin in future, I don't want to shed out thousands of dollars on this and end up with bad news

That's not the case at all. To maximize your plotting efficiency what you need is at least an 8-core CPU to be able to make plots in parallel and a large capacity fast SSD temp drive. Enterprise drives are a better option because they typically have a much higher endurance rating compared to consumer drives, which is what you want if you creating TB of plots a day. Here is a build that can create multiple TB's of plots a day for around $1000 if you shop around and try to save with used parts. Realistically it's probably closer to $1,500 now since a lot of of the parts are in demand.

https://chiadecentral.com/budget-plotting-build/

In my case I was already looking to upgrade my Desktop, so I went with a 3960X Threadripper build that can create lots of parallel plots with ease. Even if Chia doesn't work out, I still got a sweet Desktop out of the deal  Grin

I think he means 2 MH/s. That's about what I would expect from trying to mine ETH with a CPU. Europeans use a comma as a decimal separator instead of a point.
95  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Any experience with FPGA miner? on: April 22, 2021, 07:38:59 PM
Similar to ASIC's, the problem with FPGA's is they are of limited use on memory hard algorithm's. I remember back in 2018 there was talk on developing FPGA's for accelerating GPU mining, but I don't think they have produced a working unit as of yet.

96  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Which air compressor and thermometer recommended for GPU mining rigs? on: April 22, 2021, 02:22:44 PM
You should drain the compressor tank after you use it. That prevents the water from accumulating and corroding the inside. It still doesn't change the fact that compressing air creates water vapor condensation as a by product, which is why you should use an inline moisture trap. At the very least, one like this

https://harborfreight.com/inline-desiccant-dryerfilter-64637.html

I prefer to use a DataVac which is specifically made to dust electronics. It's also much more portable and convenient than using an air compressor and waiting for the tank to fill. If you're looking for something quiet, the DataVac isn't it. The motor is pretty powerful and loud.

Also when blowing out the fans be sure to not just let them spin freely. You can easily overspin and damage the mechanism. I like to use a detailing brush to lightly brush the underside of the fans to loosen the dust before blowing out one fan at a time while keeping a finger in between the blade to prevent it from spinning.
97  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Which air compressor and thermometer recommended for GPU mining rigs? on: April 22, 2021, 01:19:43 AM
I wouldn't recommend using an air compressor to dust electronic equipment. As part of the air compression, they retain water vapor which can be sprayed out. If you do, make sure you use a compressor moisture trap. Personally I use a DataVac and it's plenty powerful. It also comes with multiple attachments and a reusable filter.

98  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Intel XEON builds still a thing? on: April 21, 2021, 10:27:13 AM
Since multiple generations of the Ryzen Threadripper have come out which have much higher clock speeds and PCI-E lanes, there is no need for server based processors in a farming application. Xeon's are definitely cheaper though.
99  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 3-4 videocards in a regular computer case - is it possible? on: April 20, 2021, 01:42:57 PM
Another thing to consider is in a closed small room like a dorm room,  if there is not adequate cooling or ventilation, with 3-4 GPU's mining 24/7 the room can get very hot. Especially during the day and with summer coming up in the Northern hemisphere. A/C is a solution or if possible, opening a window to pull fresh air in and opening the door a bit will help venting the hot air greatly.
100  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 3-4 videocards in a regular computer case - is it possible? on: April 20, 2021, 09:42:21 AM
Sure, it can be done. Some people with big farms use server racks. 3-4 GPU's in a large case shouldn't be a problem. What you want is good air flow of cool air coming in from the front and bottom and hot air going out thee top and rear. Also space the GPU's as far apart as possible. It also helps if you can place a large case fan directly on top of the side of the GPU's blowing away. A case like this would be good for such a build. You can directly add up to 11 fans and even more with the 5.25" bay converters. You can also look in to water cooling the GPU's for a much more quiet build.
